Hey guys. So I just got my first level 80 character a couple days ago. It’s an engineer, obviously. I am in desperate need of help figuring out gear. I haven’t a clue where to even begin looking for any of it, or even what I should be looking for.
For reference, I’m most interested in Living Story events and WvW, and I’m sure I’ll be running some dungeons every once in a while. Here’s a link to my current build, in case that helps anyone. I’m really not looking to min-max anything, I just kind of pick skills that I have fun with and try to make them work together. So I’m not worried about squeezing every ounce of DPS I can with gear, I just need something that’ll be decent enough to get me by most of the time.
So, like I said, I’m a complete noob to level 80 stuff. What should I be looking for first? Exotics, I guess? Where do I get the best exotics from, and what do they cost? Any specific runes or sigils I should be looking for? Should I be running certain dungeons, or certain world bosses? Do I need different armor for WvW than I do for PvE? I basically need a guide for someone who has never looked up anything about armor or armorsets. I hardly even bothered to look at what armor I was wearing while I leveled, other than making sure it was relatively close to my level, and had stats somewhere in the range of helpful for me.
Oh! And before I forget; I’m a sucker for aesthetics, how do I get transmutation stuff for level 80 items?
I actually have a good bit of success in sPvP running with Pistol/Shield, Healing Turret, Flamethrower, Rocket Boots, and Elixir Gun. Can’t tell you what I’m traited to right now off the top of my head, but I am almost constantly switching between my P/S, Flamethrower, and Elixir Gun, and it makes for a fun playstyle of mastering fluid transitions between the three, and knowing when to switch to each one.
I’m still not great with the build, but I’m generally 3rd or 4th during matches, with the occasional number 1 spot after a particularly good match. But honestly I’d blame myself not having mastered the playstyle yet way more than I blame the bugs/imbalance with kits concerning things like no default auto-attack and not benefiting from weapon stats.
Even now (and especially once ANet fixing some of the more glaring problems surrounding kits), my build is a really good support/damage class. I never run around solo, always stick with a group and keep up the support, while taking some time to do damage as well. I can win a 1v1, but it’s mostly down to a lot of luck and the other player being bad than it is me doing well. It’s just a much more team-centric build.
YouTube is telling me the video doesn’t exist. =\
EDIT: Nevermind, refreshed the page, clicked the link again, it work. Not sure what happened.
I’m glad to hear that other people have trouble with destructible objects. I always feel like an idiot, spending 15 seconds trying to break a rack, and any other class comes by and takes one out in 3 hits. I’ve taken to avoiding them and just killing mobs too.
Yeah, that’s honestly my personal biggest problem with the class. In group settings, I LOVE playing support/heals. It’s pretty much what I’ve done in every other MMO I’ve played. But when I’m out doing solo PvE stuff, I have a hard time killing things in a timely matter.
Right now I’m level 52, mostly run Pistol/Shield, Flamethrower, Elixir Gun, and Throw Mine. This setup works great for me, assuming I have plenty of maneuvering room. It takes longer than almost every other class to kill something, but I do have pretty high survivability.
The problem arises when I’m either A.) in a cave, dungeon, or any other small area, or B.) there are lots of enemies around, with little space between them. With so many Engineer skills focused on jumping away and pushing back enemies, when I try to fight in a small area I just get swarmed and killed. I really think that we need at least a little more damage output, purely for solo PvE purposes. It’s a little sad to be fighting an enemy for twenty seconds, have it maybe down to half health, and then someone else comes up and attacks it a couple times to finish it off.
