And yet, now you can use them in combat, which was not possible before.
They are a company, they need to make money. And one could assume that making them usable in combat actually took some kind of time and effort, and thus it did cost them money to change it.
Would you rather have them unusable in combat?
If the OP is talking about the ones you are speaking of (cooks set etc) then these cost NOTHING at all to use in game, they just sit in the costume or whatever it’s called slot and is FREE to toggle on or off.
That’s true and that is a nice feature but I even managed to mess that up by removing it to see if I could put it in my bank account for another character to use and when I discovered I couldn’t do that I tried to put it back on in the Hero Panel and you guessed it, I needed a transmutation stone or whatever.
Other than this one feature, this is a great game and I was having a ton of fun until I bumped into skins. I wish I never purchased any. All my other purchases were fine and worked like I thought they would.
I bought the deluxe version and in the first couple of days purchased 80 USD worth of gems, so the actual cost of the transmutation charges is relatively small in comparison to total cash outlay so it’s not really the economic impact that upsets me it’s more a case of the marketing scheme is what I object to. It just leaves me with an overall negative feeling towards the game, as great as the game is, was.
I suppose if ArenNet took back the skins and gave me back the gems to purchase other stuff my objections to playing this game would be eliminated and I would just avoid the whole issue of skins in the future. I opened a ticket but to tell you the truth I will be very surprised if my request for a credit is granted.
I’m just making a point and there has to be others that would object to the same thing as I am and because I enjoyed the game I thought I would at least put the subject into the arena of conversation and maybe ArenaNet might take notice.
As to the fact that they are a company and need to make money I can understand that and was more than willing to purchase more gems to buy more in game items to help them in that endeavour.
Tbh I can sort of understand where you are coming from in some ways with some of the things this new wardrobe system did but the fact in this case is you are just not totally aware of how this system works in regards to the outfit you are talking about. I just tested it myself with my executioners outfit.
All you need to do is to log in on another char, open up the wardrobe (through the hero page) and then go down to outfits and you can see all the unlocked outfits you have. From there you can drag the outfit to that char’s outfit slot and he has it. You will see the charge pop up thing come up but it wont charge you anything, it will even say the cost is 0 charges. So you see this is far better than the old system. In the old system if you wanted the outfit on multiple chars you truly would have to buy the whole outfit again. This way you buy it once and it’s unlocked for all your chars and they can equip them for free!
So just give it another try and you may be back at that 100% happiness again.
Thanks for taking the time to supply me with that information. You’re right about me not understanding the system, I’m a newbie and I don’t have a hot clue as to what I’m doing. This information does mitigate my feelings of loss in regards to outfits and I can wait until I’m at a high enough level to use my armor skins so I don’t really feel too bad about them.
You may have done ArenaNet a favour and I am now more inclined to get back into the game but I think I will take a small hiatus from it anyway.
I just dislike the feeling that I’ve gotten myself “trapped” in a situation that I don’t like and since stuff like that eats away at me I would rather put a game down than be vexed by some of it’s behaviour.
Again, I do appreciate the information.

That doesn’t even make sense. It’s like a coin jar in your wardrobe or closet that you have to stuff just to change your pants. Why would changing clothes require a resource? Seems like some cheap cash grab.
ArenaNet have basically cut off their noses to spite their faces as far as any future purchases from the gem store because I refuse to make any more purchases. I feel like I got conned. To add insult to injury it looks like these outfits are bound to a single character and there is no way to stuff them into the bank.
Well so much for my adventure in MMO. I purchased 1500 gems of stuff and was totally happy. Then I spent another 1500 on skins and became disenchanted with the game and felt ripped off. Turning your customers off just so you can collect a paltry amount of money in transmutation charges is stupid but that’s their decision.
Maybe someday when you no longer have to, in essence keep re-purchasing the skins that you have already bought; call it trans- whatever or rip-off, it’s all the same thing; I may return to playing this game but right now I’m on hiatus. And so is my cash. You’re loss ArenaNet.
You can access your bank from a bank location, a crafting station or a special bank access thingy. When the bank panel opens up there used to be the bank where you can store stuff and the collections section where crafting stuff gets stored from your inventory when you “store collectables”. Now there is an additional tab showing the skins you have unlocked. To unlock skins from armor and weapons in game you can salvage them or right click on the items or equip a hero with it. You can also buy skins from the Black Lion Trading Post or as rewards for achievements, etc.
Thanks. I need all the help I can get right now…lol. This being a newb is painful lol.
Actually one last question. If I want to stash this skin in a safe place until a little later on, I would imagine the bank would be a good choice. I’ve never used the bank, is there any trick I should be aware of to help me store this skin?
Well I sure appreciate all the help. I think I understand how this works now thanks to your efforts.
Thanks for the answer Lilith. So to see if I got this straight, you’ve stuck with the Legendary Skin for quite a few levels. So your armor has remained at the same stats since you placed the Legendary skin on?
Wouldn’t that be inadequate protection if you skinned level 5 armor?
I guess what I don’t understand is how do you upgrade the stats of the armour without removing the skin?
I purchased the Phalanx Heavy Armor Skin for my Warrior. I thought these would skin whatever piece of armour you had equipped but it doesn’t seem to work that way.
Anytime I purchase a better piece of armor, and equip that armor it replaces the Phalanx Heavy Armor Skin and costs transmutation charges.
How do you purchase better pieces of equipment and apply those stats to the Phalanx Armor Skin without paying transmutation charges every time you purchase better equipment?
Right now, to me, it looks like you have to wait until you’re at the highest class level and have the best armor available that the game has to offer before you go and buy a skin. That doesn’t seem right. Surely I’m mistaken. Can someone please explain this to me?
Thanks for you’re help. The game is fun and I can’t wait to figure out the basics but right now I’m just sort of winging it lol. Again, thanks.
Hi, I’m new to this game and playing as a human guardian. I’ve recently purchased a bag and the only trading post and bank available in the first city will not let me enter. When I try I get knocked back by some force field or guard.
How do I access the storage bag I just purchased? How do I access the bank? Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. Im also on a quest where I have to find a disguise to enter a bandit camp. Not sure where I get this disguise. Any help there would also be appreciated.
