Edited for a kitten. “leader” was “bada**”. That makes me sad
Hello, I like quest chains the most in GW2s Open World but I think there should be a way to catch up with the story it is trying to tell.
There is this box under the achievement tab that have a small recap on what’s happening in the meta event right now. I think that should be expanded to make the story more grokkable:
Add a button that open the map like a scout and shows a moving progression of the current meta event or better yet use either actual scout-like NPC or those characters that come crying asking you for help.
Just add a “Tell me the whole situation”dialog option that will recap the whole meta or quest chain until the current situation
Let’s take “The battle for Fort Salma” meta/quest chain as an example the NPC will open t map and show:
- (Fort Salma gets boxed, marking the start of the event chain)
- Centaurs have pushed the Seraph back to Fort Salma but the siege has been broken ! Lieutenant Gregorie then led a force of seraph and volonteers to take Wellwatcher camp.
- (an arrow points to Wellwatcher camp, map panning to follow it, Wellwatcher camp gets circled)
- Lieutenant Gregorie Drove the centaurs out of the camp
- (a Shield icon appears)
- And repealed their reinforcement for the sake of Fort Salma !
- (Arrow, Panning Map, boss icon appears)
- He then led the Seraph to the Harathi’s Overlord camp and took out their lieutenants
- (Big Red boss icon, either the redness or the bigness marking the end of this chain maybe add a pulse to show that the event is currently happening)
- He is currently fighting the Harathi Overlord! Sergeant Talbert is there too, and need as much help as they can !
Now I think you can imagine what that would look like at different states and how better written it could be. Also the text should reflect failed events as well.
You can also imagine tracking completion per account/character, adding achievements for doing every steps at least once, adding different icons, like a darkened chest at the end showing that a unique reward waits at the end, an opened chest that show that you already got the reward, etc…
The point is to use signals to inform us players that we are on a quest chain and where we are in that story, as well as “stick around this story is not over yet”, also it makes me want to follow Lieutenant Gregorie as he is kind of a leader, that is to say those Side Characters get more fleshed out so I get more engrossed in the lore.
It could be as short as the Shaemoor Garrison and Scaver Plateau’s mini story ecosystem or as long as The Temple of Grenth’s Assault.
We get directions, progression, completion and closure.
Then we can really say “Been there. Done that”.
Thanks for reading

Kill Jormag with his Destiny’s edge Mk2 posse?
Actually Nillix and Vereen, even if the turret would live longer, it would still be better to detonate.
I think you are both wrong and a bit quick to put my comment down.I made a full comparison of detonating versus leaving it out in another thread.
It’s more than you account for:you have to calculate the fact you are not using the toolbelt skill when it’s left out. on a 20 second timer that’s a big loss.
No aoe heal from the detonate in the water field. So you have to use another blast finisher that might be needed for another thing.
And very important: NO self heal from deploying the turret each time, that’s half the heal lost each 20 seconds!
Of course it’s more than the heals: when leaving the turret out you can not move!
Detonating = mobile. Leaving the turret = stationary. Conclusion is: for self heal detonating is always better, but if you have a group with lots of blast finishers in a STATIONARY fight than leaving it out can be better.
I agree that the turret weakness is an extremely BIG issue.
But don’t think that’s the only reason to detonate it immediately.Even when comparing heal per heal, cooldown against cooldown… it’s still better to detonate. And this is very odd, since it’s the opposite of what the devs wanted to achieve.
Even when you ignore the incredibly poor survival of the turret.Turret weaknes could well be the worst of these issues, but you’re wrong claiming that we shouldn’t detonate if this was fixed.
Oh but I’m all for detonating, completely on your side for this one.
Thing is, unless you are about to make a stand somewhere with your party and you are all synergistic and go for combos, there is no real reason to use heal turret anymore.
So yes, I am also considering all of the cooldowns and toolbelt skills disablings. I just switched to medkit for the time being on pve roaming (still pondering for spvp and wvw) and my engineer just doesn’t feel the same anymore.
Maybe Anet wants us to switch skills a lot? the current combat mode system doesn’t allow this kind of versatility.
(edited by Vereen Silenthunter.2704)
Arenanet said they didn’t like that people weren’t using the turret and instantly picking it up, so nerfing the instant effect makes sense.
but the new Healing Turret is actually better if detonated immediately.
So they sort of missed their goal there. And let’s be frank about it: we did NOT pick up our turret before, as the dev said… we detonated it!
This proves they been theorycrafting instead of experiencing first hand. The reason why it’s best to immediately detonate isn’t because of the changes that they made, it’s because of the changes they DIDN’T make. The changes that they made to HT actually reward you for keeping it out longer (Constant regen, and additional heal + removal of conditions + water field for all allies in range of the overcharge).
The problem is that it’s impossible to keep alive in any kind of fight. The damage it takes is too much, some of the turret traits are supposedly not working, and the speed that you can heal your turrets isn’t worth the effort that you have to put into it. It is much better to cut your losses by immediately overcharging and detonating and reap its benefits than to let it stay out, die to anything else, and get nothing.
+1: The turret’s lack of survivability is a the most important strike against using it as intended.
The cleansing burst also has a 15 second cooldown, and that is 15 seconds when your healing skill isn’t recharging to heal you when you need it.
I am quite disturbed that nobody made a thread about this matter.
Maybe all of us engineers are too busy crying at the loss of the passive initial water field?
Now I would like to know if the Cleaning Burst/Regenerating Mist change is a worthy tradeoff for the main reason I was playing the turret (the other being Accelerant-Packed Turrets for KD)?
As the healing turret was already the frailest of the turrets we now have to wait for cleaning burst to trigger before considering comboing, that’s a huge loss given that it may die way before we have the opportunity to.
Also, the healing provided by cleaning burst, is it a better or a worse?
And that massive initial heal nerf…

Makes sense It didn’t show up while searching this forum then, thanks.
Still cool though.
Here’s a nice bug I’ve come across and reported (/bug) some days ago:
So, I was able to play the game with complete Boss style cam & FOV, and In my opinion…
It’s actually very cool!
So there’s how you do it:
Rush SAB world 1, get to the end cage and beat it. Loot the chest then exit to Rata Sum before the timer ends. Ta-dah!
Of course you still have the annoying camera behavior whet you are close to a wall, a ledge, a pole or a tree but it’s very nice to see how Guild Wars 2 would be if its camera was more like a loot-based dungeon crawler.
I’m a wizard ! (that could make people chuckles in japan though)
Rytlock is pleased with me.
I totally remember those, they were very cool, as boss/creature compendiums.
I wonder why they were removed from the game, maybe it was too much work at the time?
I hope they come back as a collectibles sometimes
You can turn on the option for fast ground targetting or something like that. It will throw the grenade at what wherever your mouse is when you activate and not show the targetting circle.
I know but that’s not the best way of getting the most effective/maximum range when sniping cannons on WvW for example. I like Targeting circles. Targeting circles are cool.
You can always control-right click to setup your 1 key as auto-attack, within the game client itself.
tut tut :-)
Grenades are all ground targeted on dry land, hence not Auto-attack eligible (you can set it but you still have to spam)
I play Engineer and use the Grenade Kit fairly often but sometimes it’s a pain to spam the 1 key, so I looked online and got a software named AutoHotkey and made up a small macro for a 1 key auto-fire basically.
Now before I’m actually going to use it for realz, I’m wondering if it would be considered botting by the game?
I sure hope not or all of the mice customization software should be considered as such as well.
The Mystic Forge Conduit is an awesome item. Anyone who is telling you otherwise doesn’t have one, or doesn’t understand what’s so great about it.
I use mine constantly. I have 80 inventory slots, and often times in WvW or in a dungeon or when farming I will fill up but be able to leave, and I can take the greens and transmute them into rares while out on the field, thus saving tons of space (and items I othewise wouldn’t have been able to carry)
I will probably never sell it, I use it that much.
Same thing here, I’m always carrying it around with me, along a handful of donation packaging. I can transmute greens into golds and donate blues and golds for captain’s council commendation. Good times!
A fool and his money are soon (easily) parted. Seriously spending large sums of money for something that gives you easy access to inventory bank? Maybe Anet will be encouraged to sell these items for $300, easy money for them. Some people are nothing short of stupid.
What a lovable post. Jerk.
The thing is, Anet do NOT give us the possibility to spend our money for assured convenience. I don’t feel stupid giving Anet my money if I think it will save me some gameplay time in the long run, I can afford it and that’s the point of Cash shop in most F2P/no monthly fees game.
Now, in this case, I feel stupid not getting anything of similar value in return.
Hey Vereen,
Sorry to hear this has happened to you. Actually, I really want the permanent BLTC NPC as well, but as I stated in another post: buying keys for a small chance of getting an item is a no go. I understand that other people who do buy keys think differently – I respect that. People can do what they wish with their own money.
When the permanent NPC were first announced I thought: It is likely – not definite, but likely – that the outcome of trying to get the Trading NPC by purchasing and using keys would result in an inventory full of items that I do not want but feel obligated to keep because I spent real cash on them.
Also, there would be no upper-bound on the amount of money I’d need to spend trying to get that one NPC. Hm… No thanks, I work pretty derned hard for my money. I think I’ll just buy food instead.
How many of you had similar thoughts? Did it affect your decision to buy/not buy keys?
I love this game to pieces, and want to support it with this green paper-stuff I have sitting about, but whatever set of policies drives the Gem shop offerings is excellent at keeping my wallet closed and in my pocket. That’s regrettable because I’d love, and I mean I-Would-Love, to give Arena Net my hard-earned cash to keep their business going. But I’m not going to just give it to them, they must provide value in exchange for my cash. And keys isn’t it.
…
Thank you for taking the time to write this reply.
You captured very well the frustration coming from this situation.
That feeling of no upper-boundness is the main deal breaker for the cash shop for me as well. I love the games Anet put out so far and would be glad to throw money at them as well, but like a good Kickstarter I like to know that my money also gave some value back to me. Right now I am running around Tyria to spend my tools because I refuse to destroy anything I basically paid with real money. With that comes the inventory issue for those items incapable of stacking and experience boosters that are basically useless since the exp comes mostly from events and not creature kills.
And stop giving us tonics. Some people might like them but 3 per chest is overkill and clutters our inventories as well.
Now, to wait for the Wintersday event where I may eventually be able to Mystic forge away some boosts and stuff.
I don’t really know about the p2b stuff. But I’m sure I would pay if I could get those items for sure, because I’m a sucker for utilities.
I have my mystic forge conduit, and love it with passion, now that’s a great example of a permanent gizmo that’s done well. No matter how many mystic chests you opened, they are giving you parts in every chest that you can gather to eventually create waht you want. I just hope I could transform those tonic into black lion tokens I could exchange for utilities.
(edited by Vereen Silenthunter.2704)
OK, that’s it ! Over 250 chests opened and not even one. I’m done with randomness in this game.
So basically I burned more than 200 bucks in the game for a fleeting hope of getting something awesome and got nothing but junk and wasted space. Precursors are notoriously impossible to obtain and I lost a lot of time and ig-gold in the mystic forge where nothing at all is awarded for what I threw at Zommoros. I am not giving any more money to anet until the situation on RNG changes.
I completely understand that nobody forced my to purchased gems/keys with real money, but now that’s beyond ridiculous. Kitten it, I feel so kitten and cheated now.
Now I demand recipes to transform those 20ish bank access/trader/merchant I got from those kitten black lion chest.
And I can’t believe you can’t stack those black lion tools! That’s just bullkitten!
And Yes, I used “kitten” instead of all the potential swearing.
off topic question, can you get the black lion keys anywhere else apart from gem store ?
you can get them by trading captain’s council commendation at lion’s arch now
The drops are permanent and free. They last forever, no matter how many times you use. The express do the same thing except that they cost, and have only one use. BIG difference! I lucked out and got the permanent bank express from a chest, I can use it anywhere, anytime and forever. I would love to get the permanent trader express!
Did you get that recently? I want to know before dumping another 50€ on the odd chance I got one before the Black Friday promo ends.
The Personal and Permanent Items are usable ad nauseam. Meaning that anywhere (but maybe spvp) you can access those services anytime any number of time.
Like Forever. And Ever. Like now. or now. or now…
Those items:
Personal Black Lion trader Express
Personal Black Lion Merchant Express
Permanent Bank Access Express
Do they still drop from Black Lion chests?
It’s the main reason I purchase Black lion key, but I’m at 150€ spend (100 today alone) in keys so far and got none of them.
How rare are them to not drop after more than 100 chests open? To be honest, I feel kind of stupid for spending so much on something that could/should be sold directly on the Gem store and have my inventory cluttered with non stacking black lion tools just because the RNG on those is on par with Precursors.
Legendaries should be hard to achieve completing dungeons is not particularly hard. And I just sent 5 gold to my girl friend who wants to make one of the cooking feasts for no particular reason IMHO and she will send me the money back tomorrow. She has done this in several cases even when borrowing her 10 gold, she has the same 9 to 18 job as me and still sends me the money back in less than 48 hours… How is making gold in this game hard? I’ve asked this repeatedly to all the people who complain about way points the TP tax and whatever money sink exists in the game.
I agree with you, the legendaries should be hard to get and completing dungeons are just time. Although it would be nice if there’s an alternative (also non easy) way to get the precursor. I know you can purchase it with cold hard cash from the TP.
From what you’re saying, you could buy one (around 250g) in a mere month but I can barely rack in 2 Gold per night of light playing. How do you make so much money?
Well, I don’t see the harm if they’re very slightly more powerful than normal weapons, since they are hard to come by.
The different skill set is actually a nice idea since you are not to use them in sPvP. Sure it may not wield the same skills as your typical GS, but it makes it feel more legendary, like imbued with special magic.
Just put a “toggle” skill sets or wield a normal in your switch.

In Wayfarer Foothills I fought a level 10 Dolyak.
In Frostgorge Sound I fought a level 70 Dolyak.Progression!
Well, technically the level is irrelevant to the world variety, it’s just a game terminology.
In the real world a crocodile in a region is the same as any other crocodile in the surrounding regions (disregarding subspecies bias) because you are in the same biome.
Wayfarer foothills is the same biome as Frostgorge : cold snowy mountainous place. It’s not surprising that you’d found the same kind of fauna.
Remember that level is only a tool for the game to guide you through your story. That’s what makes the level scaling system so intuitive : you’ll have the same difficulty to kill a dolyak in Frostgorge and Wayfarer because they are the same, just met at different point in your story.
Progression is about the journey of the character, he went from his homelands to exotic place, sometimes later he’ll be back near his home and fight the same kind of enemies because they are still living here.
In that regard, I think Anet did a pretty good job making a vibrant believable world. Until Orr. Orr is boring. I understand why it’s only undeads and it makes sense, but Orr is really boring.
Hope the Lost shores is good in that regard, I’ve got enough of Zaithan’s minons.
It’s great to punish players bonking at a door in WvW, but I don’t use it unless I’m on a party in PvE.
Why don't transmute stones allow us to look the way we want?

I second the OP’s idea, I like to mix and match armors from different classes on the preview screen, and sometimes the results can be astounding when mixing medium and heavy.
- “The art will clip” :
They already do when you mix and match some armors from the same category.
– “My pvp is going to die” :
sPvP has its own set of armors and you can’t transmute anyways.
WvW is unfair and you can’t really tell apart warrior from a guardian, a mesmer from a necro or a ranger from a thief unless you select the character, see him use a skill or see him with pets/weapons/minions. Also, there are no icons on enemies.
It’s like the costumes of GW1, it doesn’t alter your character in any ways, but you look like Grenth’s reaper and you can’t use them in pvp.
read all of the OP post and I have made the same observations. I paid some money to get bank tabs and keys for Halloween (a gift to myself) I really wanted some permanent stuff but got nothing of use at all (love my mystic forge conduit)
I root for the token system, I don’t know if the BLC are making Anet money right now but I would galdly buy more gems/keys if I was sure I would eventually get to my target.
Or at least let us Mystic forge our BLC items to get some of the permanent stuff (like X bank access to get a permanent one) like it’s the case with the mystic forge conduit.
My Improvements Suggestion are quite simple (so far)
- Please balance the damage of mobs in explorable Dungeons, most of the critters here can enlist to kill Zhaitan much more effictively than the twig-marshal
- Give us a training tutorial for combo-ing
- Add an Icon whenever I am in a combo field
- Tweak the spawning system so I don’t get cheap shotted by ennemies appearing just behind me.
- Bring back the skill/equipment template saving fron GW1. Of course, usable only out of battle.
- A ranking of participation at the end of an Event, Go E-pen!
That’s it for now, I like almost everything in the game.
