The character is indeed voiced. Did you ever played your personal story ?
Warning: nerdy devspeak ahead!
The player character (PC) hasn’t had new voice recorded since the game launched, so you’ll only hear your character speak in the following circumstances: conditional chatter, in cinematic conversations in the Personal Story, and in painterly “full” cinematics. We retired cinematic conversations with the Living World, so right now the PC can only “talk” through unvoiced dialog trees.
We’re exploring some technical improvements that may allow the PC to speak under new circumstances, but it’s actually a bigger undertaking than one would imagine due to the complexity of player voice implementation (10 possible voices, currently shared lines of dialog that we want to split out, scene timing per language, etc.). That’s about all I can say at the moment.
In short, we’re looking to make the PC speak again, but it’s going to take a bit of time to redo the code and content pipelines to make it work, not to mention updating our tools to allow us to generate PC lines that deviate based on race & gender, prior accomplishments, etc. We’re not ready to announce what those changes will actually be or when they might be deployed, but we’re seriously looking into it.
As always, thanks for playing.
Fun fact: SW:ToR had 8 classes with entirely diverging storylines and was and is still fully voiced. With the two genders that means 16 possible voices, with split lines of dialogue (usually 3 choices).
Actually, I’m not saying that you could’ve pulled off something similar as you didn’t have EA’s financial backing (although by not ditching quests for events and cutting down the ridiculous amount of ambivalent dialogue that in 90% of the cases is all about the everyday, boring lives of a zone’s denizens you would’ve had way more resources to concentrate on giving voice to the person who matters the most in an RPG: the PC… my 2 cents). However, I’m still waiting on a branching storyline where my choices matter, I have more than one line of dialogue, and which incidentally also takes my character’s personality, origin, species, and gender into consideration.
For you, the game should be about the PC at the expense of the open world content and ambience. For me, and for Guild Wars 2, it’s about the world as a whole since it’s a cooperative, shared environment. Neither approach is wrong, but we decided to put more of our resources into bringing the world to life. I don’t regret that at all.
I’m probably one of the unusual people who is actually happy with you choosing that way. I love how even after playing this game for nearly 2 years I can be exploring somewhere and hear a random voice say something that catches my interest and is something I haven’t heard before. It sometimes gets me searching if something they have said actually leads to something and they usually do. It makes it more enjoyable to take things slow and actually explore.
I just wish there could have been more effort put into the dialogue in the living story. I love Taimi she is amazing but the others have been mostly bland or annoying. Rox and Braham have improved since season 1 I think. Marjory is ok but Kasmeer is just irritating. There is nothing she says that isn’t just annoying and I’m not sure really if its the lines she has or the voice actors portrayal of it. She is too overly pathetic in everything she says and the sickening dialogue between her and Marjory that you have to listen to as you very very slowly walk through 1 part of the recent story is just agonising. I ended up muting it whenever she appeared in season 1 and I will probably be doing the same now for this season.
I haven’t seen anywhere that the sylvari or nightmare court are anything to do with the dragons. The nightmare count were essentially created when one of the second born didn’t like the ventari tablet. Just makes me think of a grumpy teen not liking his mums house rules.
There may be sylvari in season 2 that are dragon minions though, as if we get access to magus falls we will most likely find the second sylvari tree. There isn’t any clues yet as to what those sylvari are like. They would not have had the ventari tablet though.
I think I have given this Megaserver a good chance before coming here to put my views on it up.
After all the time I’ve been playing I can confirm that it does not put you with people from your “home server”, guild or language. It does seem to work “almost” every time to get into the same map if your in a party. Occasionally not even that works though and you click to join on someone in the party and you go straight there so the map wasn’t even full.
Creating the megaserver has destroyed so much about this game its unbelievable that Anet have not done a U-turn on it yet.
While the Idea of it was good to have more people to play with I am yet to be put on a map with English speaking people and sometimes I get put places where people refuse to speak English. The server I was on was good and I liked the community that I would see all the time but now it’s just not worth talking to people in game anymore.
Guild Missions continue to be a struggle as maps get full and trying to get everyone to the same map can be tricky sometimes, not impossible but tricky. Also if say we are doing a bounty and 1 of our guild members gets onto a different map and hits one already active from another guild then everyone in the other version of the map has to then run to the next bounty or start another. You could argue that it can be avoided with better communication but that’s not always possible.
I still don’t understand how as a guild all moving to the same map and everyone is in parties we still get 1 or 2 people who don’t get into the same map but the maps are not capped so there is no reason they are not put straight into that map.
Everything about the megaservers was a shambles. It was being put into low level areas and then being rolled out to other areas later once it was working. In reality it was just put straight into every map from the start and nothing has worked well from day 1 and nothing has been done to sort any issues out. From the very first day when going into maps anywhere I would be put on maps with random people from random servers. There could not have been any monitoring of anything before putting it out to other maps.
It still amazes me that even though large amounts of people are now quitting this game nothing has been done to make this game more enjoyable again. I go to WvW for something different to do sometimes and I play PvP but they both have issues that have never been sorted and probably wont either.
I’m not looking forward to much in season 2 either as its going to be just like the pavilion at the moment. 70ish people per map in about 3-4 maps getting to do the event and another 200+ spread out amongst god knows how many other maps clicking “join” to try get into it.
One thing I liked before was the server association meant something. The first servers to kill a big boss like Wurms and Tequatl but now that can’t happen. Yea I know people would guest across and it would be a mix of servers doing it anyway but it was still that servers population mostly.
The list can go on and on about everything that adding the megaserver has taken out of the gameplay but there isn’t anything good to list that it has added to the gameplay. Quite the opposite that Anet was intending I think.
I know most of this has probably been said over and over in this thread already and most likely it will make no difference to anything either because while we have feedback threads all that Anet seem to do is keep an eye on them. As much as everyone hates the megaserver it’s probably here to stay. There is only 1 way to fix the megaserver and that’s to get rid of it.
Just one thing.
Kasmeer to be either gone or not have any speech. The most annoying character Anet have made. Her annoying voice has made me mute the story and read it sometimes instead. I don’t think I have ever found any character in anything as annoying as her.
One of them has to die at some point right? Please let it be her.
You can solve the issue easily in the solo queue by just simply adding a “pass” option when it pops up to say the map is ready. You have “go now” and “wait” why not “pass” and re-enter the queue.
It would only be for tpvp that some kind of vote would be needed and would get complicated. But the most hated map isn’t in there anyway so why bother adding it?
Underworld was always going to end up at the bottom. I left that server mainly because I was in a guild from another server and couldn’t find a decent guild on Underworld.
WvW though was always a joke. There was some good commanders and guilds during season 1 but I could never enjoy playing in WvW because it was always full of whiney little kids who think they all know better. If a Zerg wiped they would just hurl insults at the commander till he detagged then wonder why they don’t have a commander and why no one wants to tag up. You could never get anything done because of the amount of people unwilling to follow instructions, get on TS or do anything team work related.
Now they have no one in WvW because most who play WvW have gone to other servers.
I just realized I never responded to this.
Thanks for the info. I used that with some other help to get a laptop. The upgrade path was never really a viable option. I had a HP pavilion. Very old and never intended to be used for gaming.
What I got in the end is MSi GE60 a little over my original budget but a great laptop
it has
CPU – i5-4200 quad core 2.5Ghz
GPU – Nvidia GTX 760M/2g GDDR5
RAM – 8GB DDR3 (1 stick)
Hard Drive – 1 TB 7200rpm
Screen is 1900 × 1080
I got 2 of them for 1500 pounds. I spent a few days trawling though websites for offers and special deals.
I can now play Guild Wars on best appearance setting and the laptop doesn’t even break a sweat.
Would recommend this laptop if anyone else is looking for one and can afford it.
I’m looking at getting a new laptop and I only really use my laptop for playing Guild Wars so obviously the most importing thing I need is to make sure it will run the game. I have around £1300 to get 2 laptops (Me and the wife). The laptops we have currently run the game at minimum specs and if I put anything up slightly it freaks out and turns itself off but they are a little old now.
I’m really just looking for something that will run around medium specs for the game as I think I won’t have enough cash to get something to run at full specs comfortably.
I have found this but would like some advice before purchasing it.
I used to build computers myself years ago so I understand a little about it but after not building them for some time there are different things now. I guess I just want to make sure I’m not missing something before parting with some cash.
Any help will be appreciated.
I’m looking for a PvE guild. I mostly want to find a guild to do dungeons with. I have not had much opportunity to complete the dungeons yet since when I do eventually find a PuG that doesn’t require something silly of me to be in there group I get kicked because I’m watching the videos.
I suppose what I’m looking for is a guild that actually enjoys playing this game. I have been in some guilds that advertise doing all sorts of things but after joining they don’t really do anything other than guild missions.
I play fairly often but can’t do things on the same day every week because of my work
Edit:
I should have probably put up here I’m on Underworld so any EU guilds really so I can guest to the server if need be before possibly transferring if I get on with the guild.
