Part 2: What Players Would Have Liked Instead
The queue is long and boring.
- VOTE HERE to allow us to queue outside of HotM.
- If not, allow us to queue in certain other places, such as Guild Halls or Obsidian Sanctum.
- Add Obsidian Sanctum to HotM so that players can duel or have a Jumping Puzzle.
- Spice up HotM in other ways.
Solo players vs. teams is BS.
- Please, for the love of God, add a KITTEN-ING Solo Q.
League achievement =/= prestige.
- Reset MMR before the season begins so good players are not disadvantaged.
- Reward players for win-streaks so they can quickly leave low divisions if they are very good.
- Do not lock players into divisions. I could lose every single match from now until the end of the season and I would still be legendary. Wtf?!
- Do not give pips for stronghold.
Bugs and QOL
- Fix the bugs before adding more problems.
- Also, add a blanket PvP currency and stop giving players boxes on the side of the screen which offer them multiple boxes which you can then open to receive bags which contain bags inside of them.
Balance Suggestions.
- The AG amateur tournament is currently much more interesting than the ESL Pro League because they limited teams to one profession type each. This has been suggested by other top players and would diversify the meta.

Hello!
I’m a longtime GW1&2 veteran and semi-competitive tournament player. I’ve been reading the forums and have noticed more anet-hate now than I have in quite some time. I have really worried about the deterioration of PvP in GW2 since they removed the ability to queue outside of Heart of the Mists, and today I believe that PvP is at an all-time low, despite many new features added with the expansion. Essentially, if the “popularity of Structured Player vs. Player has grown at an explosive rate” then why does every patch seem to diminish the quality of “the fastest-growing area of Guild Wars 2”? This sentiment is evidenced by the growth of “let’s talk about how the game used to be fun” posts on the forum.
This forum post will be as long and detailed as possible, and I hope to create a comprehensive list for ArenaNet that includes specific examples of what players hate, what we would have liked, and suggestions for how that can get done. Please post links to other forum posts below so I can add your input.
Part 1: What Players Hate
Structured Player vs. Player is inherently boring.
The #1 problem with PvP in GW2 is that it if you spend an hour doing it, maybe only 30-45 minutes of it are fun. The other 15-30 minutes are spent sitting in a queue waiting to have fun. Unfortunately, ArenaNet removed the ability to queue outside of Heart of the Mists, supposedly because of some conflict with queues popping while players were in loading screens. This drastically reduced the fun of PvP, and hundreds of thousands of players’ hours have now been wasted sitting in Heart of the Mists doing practically nothing. Not only are queue times very boring, but they can often be very long, especially at diamond and legendary divisions. This issue is even worse for streamers, because all their viewers are forced to watch them do nothing while they queue. ArenaNet must take action to address this concern, as it is the single worst thing about PvP.
For a more detailed conversation of this issue, see here.
Structured Player vs. Player is inherently unfair.
The second biggest problem within Structured PvP is that it is inherently unfair. The fact that I could queue up alone, and be matched with teammates who are also alone, and face an entire premade team communicating on teamspeak, is unbelievable. Yes, I understand that I may not be penalized for playing this team, and can get an even greater reward if I beat them, but this inherently unfair match happens so often and is not fun for either parties. The solo team will be upset they have such an unfair game, and in many cases, it’s a boring blowout match for the premade team. There are probably fewer hairs on my head than the amount of times the PvP community has asked ArenaNet to reimplement a solo queue, but this request has been unmet and undiscussed, which is perhaps their largest blunder
The League System is perceived by many to be a failure.
It is a general consensus among top players that the league system is a failure. This is for multiple reasons, but largely because leagues are really more about how much you play than how good you are, which was the same exact problem with the last leaderboard test season. The current league system also exacerbates the previously mentioned problems, further ruining player morale and disincentivizing players from PvPing.
The game is balanced upon a faulty foundation.
Many players have complained about a number of game-breaking bugs that have been ignored for far too long. It is much more important to fix a previous implementation that was done poorly, than to implement something else on top of it, because this may also be done poorly and add to an ever-growing list of functionality problems. It is imperative that ArenaNet address these bugs because they diminish the quality of gameplay, and in tournaments can completely ruin matches.
- Being immobilized mid-air prevents you from doing anything.
- Sometimes, players can dodge while immobilized and therefore negate the entire duration of a very costly CC.
- Quickness and Slow can ruin stomps.
- Guardian traps may not visualize and cause players to be knocked down endlessly
- Transferred conditions still cause rallies
- Ranger pets reappear after ranger dies.
The list goes on…
Current balance is literally the worst we’ve ever had.
Just watch this vod of the last Pro League match. This is without a doubt the most boring thing I’ve ever seen.

High-division players do not take ambers and emeralds so that they can stomp noobs. They don’t want to play against noobs, because they suck and it’s a boring match.
They take them because they cannot get a Q otherwise. If I Q by myself, I literally cannot play the game. My Q times are often over 1hr long (see below). I have to party with lower division players in order to play the game, and most of the time, they suck, Anet gives me a kitten team, and I go against a full premade.
@Ithilwen.1529 “Thus, the diamond player is getting an easy match as well as cutting the queue line.”
This is just absolutely wrong, and obviously you’re not diamond nor do you have any friends that are. The diamond player gets HARDER matches, and the diamond player ENTERS the queue because otherwise they are stuck in q hell for literally hours.

Check out these fast Qs I got in a diamond solo q
twitch.tv/Lord_Almighty
@aidenwolf This is honestly my circumstance:
- I used to play the game at a competitive level (this is my ESL history)
- I quit the game when HoT came out so that I could focus my attention on getting a job
- I got a job and now I’m back playing the game and my friends and teammates are high tier while I’m low tier.
Please explain to me how I am “gaming the system”? I shouldn’t be allowed to play with my friends and own teammates just because they played leagues like 6 days before me? Are you just complaining because you do not have good friends?
@ Cynz Look, I agree that a 5man vs soloqers is very dumb. I’m a strong advocate for seperating the Qs. We had gone against several 5man teams, but anet’s matchmaking put us against soloqers. Not my fault.
@Power Bottom tell me about it man… Happened again today. Friend DC’d and returns to game, and we all get punished.

(edited by Wesley.5749)
@Captain Sam This is my only account, look at my forum history. I’m not playing on an alt to boost my friend’s leagues – I’m playing with my friends to boost my own league because if I soloq I get matched with noobs.
@ ITheNormalPerson exactly, thank you. +1
@Chazua U rite.

@Captain Sam, I’m the emerald. This is what your post looks like to me:
“How dare you have the audacity to play the game by joining a group with your friends? On top of that, you played the currently most powerful builds”
Although my league is low (because I don’t play this game anymore since anet steals my pips and kitten a grindfest), I have pretty good MMR and we’ve been playing against top players all day, when they’re around to play. How else should I move up the league system besides Qing with my friends? Do you actually expect me to be stuck in noobville while I soloq and bash my head on the wall? Why is it my fault that Anet’s system gave your soloqers a match against our premade?
Also, l2p the meta, or make the next meta that is better than this one.
twitch.tv/Lord_Almighty
(edited by Wesley.5749)
The current dishonor system is WTF dumb. This is what happened:
- We Q up as a team, wait 8m, and face another premade
- 3m into the game one of our guys DCs bc nature
- We play like maniacs and win 4v5… 502-499
- We get punished and lose 2 pips because our teammate DC’s
- see screenshot
Why on earth is MY win listed as “desertion”, if I’m not the one who deserted? Playing and working hard to win a 4v5 is literally the complete opposite of deserting your team.
And why on earth does the enemy deserve to gain pips and move up the league for LOSING a game where they have an enormous advantage?
Anet, plz. We demand pips in the form of consumable items.

Hey man,
I sent you a message in game, but I also wanted to post on here in the event that you check the forums first. I currently lead a partial team that might be a perfect merge for you and your friend. We consist of a D/P Thief, Shoutbow, and Cele Engi, and collectively have over 10k games between us. We have each individually played in a variety of tournaments, and have placed atop the leaderboards (both past, and the most recent test season).
We have excellent knowledge of our classes and strong mechanical and rotational ability. We have our own TS, have clear microphones, and play together basically every day. Practice is an essential requirement for us. Although I don’t think champion titles are very important, I have every one except Magus, and am willing to change builds or professions to meet team needs.
Message me whenever you’re on in game.

I also have this problem, and experience 2-3 second freezes whenever I open the scoreboard in a pvp match. I had to unbind B because of this. I cannot verify whether it is an account based problem or not, as I only use one account.

Hey guys,
I play very often. Looking for a guild that does guild missions, and may dabble in WvW and PvP. If you’ve got requirements, great. Let me know what’s up!
Thanks.

So leave the random, unfair and unevenly distributed RNG drop because everything else can be bought, and this is the only broken thing worth keeping. That makes no sense. This would be alright if they at least had a random drop at certain levels, say, 40+. Further, aren’t pristine relics a dungeon token, which, as you said, is an exception to what can be bought? Wouldn’t this objection go against the premise of your argument?
Simply put, it’s not fair that somebody who did fractals level 20 once has more to show for it then people like me who have done fractals over 600 times, have over 50 pristine relics from dailys above 20, and are above level 50.
People who work less should have less of a reward. The people who work hundreds of hours to get the weapon they want should be rewarded.
twitch.tv/Lord_Almighty
Thanks for the bumps and support you guys. I am in the same spot as all of you, and many others. I’ve got over 50 pristine relics, all from daily fractals that are above level 20. It’s a shame that they made it this way. RNG is the lazy way out.
twitch.tv/Lord_Almighty
Doesn’t look like we’re going to get any love, folks
twitch.tv/Lord_Almighty
The suggestion of purchasing fractal weapons with pristine relics comes up again and again on this forum. People think it’s unfair that somebody can do a level 20 fractal once and get their weapon, but others can be fractals level 50 with 600+ fractals completed and 50+ pristine relics and only have gotten one or two weapons that they can’t even use.
Please merge these threads into one, because many different people are offering unique and innovative suggestions for resolving this. Here are some links:

I’d hate to see these weapons become common. If it did happen there should be Fractal Lvl Requirement of 1000000,00000,000000000,,00,0,0,0,0,0,00,,00,00 zillion.
Of course the people that have them wan’t them to remain uncommon. But that’s a selfish argument because the rest of us worked hard to get nothing. This RNG problem is worse than that of the mystic forge for precursors. At least you can buy it with gold.
Here, have a slight chance to get something at all, let’s say one in three. Of that slight chance, you have another one in three chance that it’s a weapon not a ring or infused ring (unless you’re doing 26+). Then you have a one in nineteen chance that it’s the weapon you want.
It just isn’t fun playing for maybe two hours a day to roll a 150+ sided die.
twitch.tv/Lord_Almighty
I agree with the aforementioned points and have some insights of my own that I would like to contribute to this discussion.
My first and most important contention is that the current method of obtaining fractal weapons is not fun. Many players continually work hard to have fractal weapons and are relentlessly unrewarded. I’ve done my 20, 30, and 40 fractal daily every day for 2 weeks, with few exception and have only gotten two fractal weapons, both of which I cannot even use. I am honestly wasting my time. This point can be summed up by Colin Johanson (http://www.arena.net/blog/is-it-fun-colin-johanson-on-how-arenanet-measures-success) : “Every time you finish a dungeon you get tokens you can trade in for reward items that you want, rather than having a small chance of getting it as a drop, because it’s more fun to always get rewarded for finishing with something you want to have!” Not only is it more fun to be rewarded, but it’s is not fun at all to be constantly unrewarded. It is demoralizing and is an incentive for people to never return to fractals.
Further, fractal weapons do not denote expertise in fractals, as dungeon specific weapons do for other dungeons. Instead, they signify luck. While I am not yet in my 60s, I would consider myself quite high level in fractals. I have maximum AR, and have overcome the challenges that the dungeon poses at higher levels. Unfortunately, there are many people in there 20s who have more to show for their work in fractals than I do (because I can’t even equip my weapons).
Finally, the currency for daily completion of even level fractals was a band-aid for people that complained about the ascended ring chance. For the many people above level 30 that have max or near max AR already, the pristine relics just sit in our inventory and have no real use aside from tracking how many hours we have invested trying to obtain the weapons and have been unrewarded.
I support the suggestion of using relics to purchase weapons. If this would allow people to get the weapons too easily, introduce a fractal level restriction for purchasing the items (ie, you can only purchase the weapons that cost less at normal dungeon merchants past level 30, and you can purchase the weapons that cost 390 dungeon tokens past level 40, etc.)
I currently have 48 pristine fractal relics, and if each run has taken approximately one and a half hours, then I have spent 3 days of my life playing this game and doing something that isn’t even fun. (Which is an understatement. I swear I get cliffside and underground every other run, and this doesn’t include the times somebody has DC’d before the update)
I will not return to this dungeon until this problem is resolved, lol. There is no worthy reward for completing higher levels. There are better exotics and gold from CoF farm, which is an entirely different discussion.

(edited by Wesley.5749)
Please, for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT REMOVE THIS!
It has no impact on anything significant, it is solely a visual effect and not an exploit.
People actually have fun with it. Removing it would make your game less fun for many people.
There are much bigger problems to focus on. It’s not like spinning a greatsword around is doing any harm.
twitch.tv/Lord_Almighty
Mesmer.
I have 4 level 80s, all exotic/ascended gear (Mes, Guard, Thief, and Warrior), and from my experience I like mesmer the best for a blend of damage, support and self sustainability. While the others are certainly useful (and arguably, equally survivable with good utility), I always find myself coming back to my mesmer to do dungeons and fractals because with the build I have I can still be very useful and do good damage while staying alive. Alternatively, there are many occasions where I do reroll my guardian or warrior to achieve a different purpose, but overall I prefer my mesmer. The utility skills are unique, as well as fun, and I just don’t get the same feeling on other professions. Guardian would be my second recommendation, if you would prefer to survive more and give greater group support over damage and utility. And again, you can run different builds on both of these professions to do similar things, it’s all about the play-style you prefer!
