I like almost all of your suggestions. I personally do not have an issue with the trading post at all, but would like to see direct player trading an option also.
Unfortunately with the current skill system it may be difficult to add a variety of interesting mechanics to boss fights as players would require equally interesting skills to combat them. While I like the IDEA of less defined roles, the system was not well implemented in my opinion. Any class can play in the role DPS or support, but we have no traditional healer. While it is easier to form groups in GW2, the content we are grouped for just feels less challenging and repetitive. Numbers > skill and PvBagofHP.
Perhaps I’m a bit biased though. For those of you that have played trinity based MMO’s, do you ever miss pulling off the seemingly impossible? Some of my most memorable moments in any game were in GuildWars 1. Playing a monk and having the other monk in the party leaving in the middle of some tough content.. but wait, we aren’t going to start over, and the group decides to carry on. After a grueling test of skill your party succeeds and you all add each other to your friends-list because of that EPIC run.
I would love to see more attention given to healing roles. Going full DPS on a warrior should have serious consequences. Currently a full DPS group can complete near any content by hitting and dodging as required and they do it faster than a ‘balanced’ group. Reminds me of the speedclear groups in GuildWars 1 that they tried so many times to nerf without success. I understand that many do not see things the way I do, It’s just my opinion. Moving on..
Monetization schemes are necessary for obvious reasons. I have to agree with you on the transmutation stones and splitters though. Actually, a lot for sale in the gem store would make a great reward for completing challenging content. I understand the need, but it is important to recognize what we lose in rewards because of it. Sure, you can buy/trade gold for gems and get your shinies, but you wont see a boss drop a piece of phalanx armor for that same reason. For me, the most noticeable consequence of having the gem store is that it hinders immersion. Some folks like fuzzy quaggan backpacks, armor that makes you look like some nordic comic superhero / sparkly power ranger, but I do not. How does that fit the lore, setting, or in any way make sense other than it being something new and available for purchase? I wouldn’t have issue with it if it weren’t for the fact that items that DO fit the story and lore could have been made available in their place. I have made purchases from the gem store by credit card. I want to support the developers, but a lot of the items available should (I think) be in the game from regular vendors or as basic rewards for repeatable content. I find the current system comes across as being underhanded. Instead of items that paygate convenience, or take advantage of inebriated DC comics fans, how ‘bout we get some quality designs that ADD to immersion and overall game quality.
I’ll pay for more of that.
The cash-shop in GW2 is run by the same person that ran the (in)famous Maplestory cash-shop.
If you’re interested in what items we may yet see in the cash-shop, check out this youtube video.
If you think the new harvesting tool is over the top, check this kitten out. Yeah…
Get used to it folks.
I love the freedom in GW1 to make your build any way you like. I can see how this made developers lives a bit more complicated however. Attempts at balancing that system ultimately failed. Combating the 600/smite build and the various shadowform speed clears cost the company plenty of time that could have been routed elsewhere.
I can understand how moving to a dumbed down skill system can make balance much easier. That said, the current skill system in GW2 is somehow still very imbalanced in my opinion. If the relative lack of freedom in builds could be offset by more exciting gameplay mechanics, I think that would be fine. Dodging and jumping are great, but that does not compensate for the lack of creative freedom in my opinion. I would LOVE to see secondary classes, more build diversity, and by extension, more immersion. I also know why I’ll never see it. No, it wasn’t worth it.
Been in ZN for a month now and paid for all my kids university with LOOT BAGS!
Great group of people here and looking for YOU to join us!

It’s a kickstarter guys.. it provides funding. Would not interfere with GW2 development in any way, shape, or form.
So.. you are thinking that they would get enough money to hire a completely new team and then magically learn them about the whole code of GW1?
So.. you are thinking that they would get enough money to hire a completely new team and then magically learn them about the whole code of GW1?It will effect GW2 no matter how much money they gain (unless of course said money is used to buy the source code of GW and begin developing it outside of ArenaNet, but I find it quite doubtful that NCSoft would agree to that.
Yeah.. I honestly don’t know much about magically learning things. I’m also not a programmer and know nothing about code.
I know a little something about money however. If you have enough, you can do almost anything.
I really hope this becomes reality.
How should this work? The A.Net staff can’t split themselves.
Exactly what I was going to point out. Split a already small team up into two smaller teams.
Would only hurt things in the long run.
It’s a kickstarter guys.. it provides funding. Would not interfere with GW2 development in any way, shape, or form.
O M G.
I truly hope this works out!
Edit: I’ll give $200.
“Defined as one who offers oneself for money”
This is a type of dishonorable behavior i’m talking about. I’m not going to apoligize for a word whos definiation applies.Lets not kid ourselves here…
Jade Quary and Blackgate are full of guild leaders who fall into this defination, while dragging their guild populations with them.
Outside of this, I do understand your comments about WvW not being perfectly balanced, and the direction Anet chooses to manage this.
Thank you for this valuable information! I think we should investigate the JQ/BG prostitution ring immediately. I also heard that guild leaders there have mind powers to control their members and force them to play WvW. We need to put a stop to this!
Lets not kid ourselves here… alien pimps have clearly taken over the tier 1 servers in GW2 and things will only get worse over time. I overheard a conversation recently about a culling soon to occur in WvW. You know how during a zombie apocalypse when you are caught in a mob you can pretend to be a zombie and they don’t eat you? That’s what I have to do every day in Blackgate. When opportunity presents itself, I will strike. Until then, I shall pretend to have fun playing WvW with an honorable group of players against challenging foes.
Keep up the good fight! Don’t let anyone tell you how to spell either. Your spelling denotes creativity and an unwillingness to conform to linguistic ideals!
Disturbing news…
“Be aware that every time someone buys a black lion key, a unicorn has its horn cut off. They are used to make the rainbows that emanate from the chests and an overall sense of hope for the buyer.” – The Queensdale ‘trolls up!’ troll.
He also said that ‘The Darkness’ (Tim Curry) purchased majority shares in NCSoft and was really pushing for this rainbow idea.. though I’m not sure I trust the troll as he put 12 stacks of bleeding on me right after he told me.
Regardless, history has a way of repeating itself, and Tom Cruise is obviously no longer fit to protect the unicorns, and humanity by extension.
PLEASE Arenanet, stop the slaying of these beautiful creatures. You don’t need rainbows, misleading advertising, and angry/disappointed/unsatisfied customers to make a profit.
Quality content doesn’t need to be dressed up and made to be epic. It already is.
Save the unicorns, replace the Black Lion Chest with something similar, but has no rainbows… and maybe put in things that are useful more often. I know the manufacturing cost of quality digital items is rather high, but I feel confident that the increase in company profit would make this a viable option.
Or you can continue down this dark path.. ultimately dooming the human race to lives of despair and anguish in a tainted existence via the extinction of unicorns.
We all know that ‘The Darkness’ has a larger agenda, and I implore all concerned individuals to help protect this endangered species… by sending me your in-game gold that you would have spent on black lion keys, for the price of a cup of coffee a day, we can put a stop to this!
On a side note, I would like to have a mini Bruce Campbell available in the gem shop.
I would buy that. (With donations)
Most people playing this game ain’t paying customers, as in we do not pay a monthly fee. You bought the game once, thats it.
The money used to purchase the game isn’t imaginary because I don’t pay a sub. Many people, including myself, are supporting development via gem store purchases. We are paying customers.
No, sorry. If the developers make a mistake, that’s something they should be called out on.
If the mistake results in an exploit, that’s something they should be called out on.
If the mistake results in an exploit, YOU DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE KITTENING EXPLOIT. PERIOD.
You know what an exploit is. Everyone knows what an exploit is. You’re all acting like you’re idiots who can’t tell the difference between right and wrong.
Like Lance Armstrong, you don’t give a kitten that you were cheating, you only care that you were CAUGHT cheating.
You seem angry.. please don’t let that stop you from fully reading posts you want to quote in the future. I think you’ll find we are actually in agreement. If not, perhaps you could point out the portion you disagree with.
All of this could have been avoided by simply testing content thoroughly before release. I find it difficult to understand how this error went unnoticed previous to launch.
Paying customers are not beta testers.
The community is helping to enable irresponsible game development by supporting this blatant deflection.
Exploiting Arenanets blunder is also irresponsible and damages the community.
No-one would have been banned and this thread would not exist if all parties involved had done their due diligence.
Just one guys opinion..
GW2, as others have said, is in its infancy… but it’s a greedy infant.
GW2 so-far is a shinier, shallow, kiddie version of GW1.
The gem store (in its current state) plagues and strangles creative development.
Other than that I think the game is pretty OK.
@DarcShriek
I do live in British Columbia and will edit my post.. thx for the info.
The point is how it is perceived by consumers and the resulting impact.
@Orion the Cursed
I hear what you’re saying, and agree with you on some points.
Personally, I’m against P2W, and don’t see the current model as such. It does however push the envelope a bit. It seems to me that many of the items available for cash should have common in-game availability. An example of this would be the black lion salvage kits. They offer superior salvage ratios directly affecting your income. The point of having this item in the gem store is to generate income. Having this item in the gem store instead of being available regularly in-game is bothersome to me as I would prefer to spend money on something that adds creative value to the game. Not something that feels to me like it should be included in the basic content.
Character slots, bank slots, makeover kits etc I think are exactly the kinds of things that should be in the gem store.
The current scheme seems needlessly greedy to me. I think they could make a mint promoting more creative content.
I dont understand.
What are you guys planing to do with these exotics after they drop? You do realize that if Anet buffs the drop rates, the market will stabilize in no time at all, exotics will drop in price tenfold and they wont be worth anything anyways. Its exactly what happened during the lost shores event and every other time Anet nerfs or buffs drop rates.
It’s fun to kill off something big and mean, take its sword, and equip that trophy. There are ways to introduce additional factors to adjust drop rates which would not significantly interfere with current market conditions. 1 exotic in 1000 hours of play is terrible.
@Wheels
I spent $0 on Gems. Just extra gold i have laying around. Now i have thousands of gems laying around instead because i only buy things like more slots.
If you didn’t get extra drops from spending extra cash on GW1, why do you have a problem in GW2? As for odds, you can go online and look at the “research”. You really need to calm down.
I am calm.
My problem with spending extra cash on GW2 is simple. Many players feel discontent with their in-game purchases. The forums offer significant evidence of that. This has a negative impact on the future of GW2. Sure, you can say “Well, that was dumb of them to spend the money.” and you may be right. Arguably, those people are less likely to continue spending money and supporting further development. It creates negative sentiment and hampers word-of-mouth advertising.
If you like to play GW2, this is bad for you.
The research you refer to is unofficial and unless I’m mistaken does not include all items. It is at best unreliable.
Player sentiment is an important indicator for growth.
The forums represent a vocal portion of the community and is a powerful tool for developers. My concern is as much for players as it is for Arenanet. This company has an excellent track record listening to players and making positive changes based on suggestion.
I am hopeful that my post will contribute to the changes I (and many others on the forums) would like to see.
So to clarify.. I love many aspects of GW2. The game is still in its infancy and deserves the opportunity to evolve.
I believe that criticism is required in order to improve and that the developers are listening.
Why is getting loot fun?
Seriously? How isn’t getting loot fun?
I’ve somehow managed to play for over 1000 hours. In that time I have had 3 exotic drops via RNG. I’ve killed countless dragons the size of large buildings and opened huge treasure chests only to receive garbage (consistently). I’ve made some money on the TP, exchanged for gems, bought keys, opened TONS of BL chests to get TONS of useless junk. I’ve also spent over $200 on unlocks and various other gemstore items.
XP boosters that affect kills only? Really? I can see how that may help a bot that runs around killing for hours on end to gain a couple levels.. but not many humans. At least not at current gold to gem ratios. Certainly not Amex/Visa to gem ratios. Karma boosters and BL salvage kits are handy, but I feel these items are all very bland and should be available in-game via merchants. The gem store would make a killing selling skins. Lots of quality skins = lots of players spending money and smiling.
Instead of having players lose nearly every time they spend money, have them win.
In my personal opinion:
The current system hurts Arenanet/NCsoft/Nexon as much as it hurts the players. It capitalizes on, and exploits individuals weaknesses. Players feel screwed, stop playing, tell their buddies, and ban gw2 from their computers for exploiting their wallet.
No, no-one forced them to buy gems, they may have simply wanted to support their favorite mmorpg and keep the content coming.
I’d Like to add that this game is beautiful, has many features that form the foundation of perhaps the best game ever. I want to support the developers. I also want developers to keep players like me in mind when making decisions.
The only reason I’m hanging on is out of loyalty. GW1 is an amazing game. I spent 7 years playing it and I spent money in the cash shop there to support development. If there were a donation button I would have clicked it regularly. I want to have a reason to feel that way about GW2 also.
For now I’ll remain hopeful.
(edited by Wheels.8451)
The OP is correct in my opinion, but as Serrenn said, those features are found in GW1.
If you loved making builds, free travel, free trade, free trait adjustment, guild vs guild, heroes ascent, customizable heroes, dye-able weapons, freedom of weapon choice, secondary classes, etc etc… this is may not (yet?) be the game for you.
I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from several players from various gaming backgrounds. I would encourage the GW1 fans to consider that this game is a sequel in name and story only. It will likely never resemble GW1 partially due to the monetization scheme woven into the very fabric of this new Tyria. In the end, it’s difficult to argue.. GW2 is the more effective business model.
For those of you that purchased the game based on the manifesto, years of enjoyment in GW1, and are feeling not only taken advantage of, but ENTITLED to the game you felt promised.. you might as well drop it. Until the majority of players (with lots of money) want a game like GW1, you simply will not see it.
You vote with your time and money.
Moving forward, I will be spending much less of both on this game.
