I am by no means the strongest PVP player in the world, but today, while utilizing the trebuchet in Kyhlo, I started receiving threatening /tells from a thief who had tried to attack me. Calling me a variety of names and juvenile insults, he proceeded to start telling me to fight him in RL, that he was going to trace me, and finally blocked me after uttering, ‘good luck breathing next week brah’.
Really.
I spent the entire time staring at my screen in disbelief and amused laughter.
But it /actually happened/.
Thus, I thought I’d generate a thread. How often has this happened to you other PVPers, eh? XD
…And nobody ever heard from Whirlpool again…
I’ve still got some time left on the clock, according to his death threats.
Honestly, yeah. I’m shocked it took as long as it did.
But I do think it’s important we, as players, discuss the level of abuse and vitriol that does occur. That kinda stuff is bad.
I highly doubt they would do anything about the behavior the Original Poster mentioned. The developers turn a blind eye to verbal abuse in the PvP community passing it off as “they are passionate” about the game.
Just think about the general forgive and forget a certain purple butterfly user got for his gun threat/joke.
I would hope they would. I just spent an entire game with a guy spamming racial slurs and demanding people to come to ‘Iraq’ so he could ‘kill them’, while claiming to be in the British military.
Fun times. :P
Also, I have noooo idea who you’re talking about. Sounds like a fun story, though!
That said, I think the general lack of communication that anything is done to any of these people who do these kinds of things contributes to an atmosphere where it feels like nothing is actually done to these guys (even if things were done).
Yeees. Just a bit. And I was tempted to mention calling the authorities at least once. I really take a dim view of these sorts of things.
the “authorities” should never be called. just laugh at them report them and move on. a hollow threat from a 2 year old should not warrant you calling the cops and having them go all SWAT crazy guns blazing on some idiot behind a computer acting tough.
I don’t think someone would get SWAT tapped for that, honestly. And this wasn’t on an American server anyways.

He actually told me ‘only cowards use treb’ and ‘only cowards play mesmer’.
This was coming from a thief.
LOL.
I don’t understand it, personally. I mean, I know I get frustrated when I feel like I got robbed of a victory or something, but I don’t think I’ve ever done the whole ‘I AM GOING TO FIND YOU AND BEAT YOU UP IN RL’ thing.
Mostly because I’m not maladjusted. But this sort of stuff /does/ seem really, really prevalent not just in PVP, but on the internet as a whole.
It’s still kind of chilling, if hilarious.
Yeah. I reported him and have screenshots of the whole thing.

Hot kitten . I want to know what build that Tsuki character was running. o.O
One thought I had as a way to solve the ‘coverage wars’ problem would be to change PPT to a sliding scale based on numbers of the various teams in the battlefield..More people in the battlefield? More PPT. Less people? Less PPT. The problem is, after all, that you get rewarded the same way whether or not there’s a lot or very few people on the opposing sides at any given hour.
Let’s say Blue owns all its borderland, but there’s no real fighting going on there. Less PPT. There’s /tons/ of action, however, in EB. All EB objectives are now ‘worth more’.
Capturing and holding relatively uncontested objectives shouldn’t be worth as much as capturing and holding /contested/ objectives. Holding your enemie’s Garrison on their borderland and fighting a huge battle over it and winning, for several hours, should be worth more than PVDooring an entire map.

I enjoyed it up to the point where the NPCs start patting each other on the back and promptly ignoring that you exist.
Typical ArenaNet.
Having this as well in addition to the ’can’t sell anything’.
Also having this problem. I just get an ‘error’ message when I try to sell something. Seems like I can buy just fine, though.
That’s more or less what I’ve been trying to do too. I haven’t gotten it yet.
Frankly, strategy or not, he simply isn’t fun.
Varconi, I’d be interested in seeing your build.
I’m missing /one/ this area too and am hoping to find some tips on where to look myself.
I haven’t had much luck eyeballing things. Just sitting on that one last spot like I’ve been for months. The new achievement ‘so close’ thingy is making my eyeballs itch every time I see it.
This is the guide I -always- recommend to my newbie Mesmer friends, and to a man, they always say ‘wow! Thanks! This made it so much more fun!’.
Hooray for Lazyness!
Still works like that, yes, but for PVE it’s not such a problem as long as you’re mindful of it.
Don’t underestimate the prestige’s role as a blast finisher! This can actually be very useful, and having fun with combos is one of the only reasons I use the torch in PVE myself.
I’ve been using the Personal Shatter version of your build for a while now, having already been running something like it before I find your thread. It’s been a big help to see how you do things. I don’t quite have your survivability yet, though I definitely have more work to do at getting more skilled. xD
Still, I learned a lot and got some good gearing tips, which is what I really needed. Thanks!
You have the right idea. Confusion limits you, but it has a fairly short duration. You just need to watch your condition removal, keep the number of stacks on you limited, and control your own actions carefully.
Definitely. It really depends on the guardian type. There have been fights versus Guardians where I’ve just had to give up on them since the fight had literally lasted eight minutes. XD
And thanks for all the answers, folks! That link was really helpful too. Definitely going to try some of the things suggested.
What sort of Guardian are you, specwise? Generally, specs like this are weaker against Condition Damage builds, so I’d wager a burny build is your best bet. Otherwise, depeneding on spec, it might turn into one of those duels-that-lasts-forever. xD
Hi there!
I am looking for a good example of this particular build, alongside any information that could be gleaned about how it plays in PVE/Dungeons and the best way to utilize it. What sort of gear goes best with it? What sigils on what weapons? Etc, etc.
I am curious.
Thanks!
I played a game today that was a team that had 1 guardian, 1 warrior, 2 eles, a mesmer, a couple of thieves and a ranger. The other team? All thieves.
The work to reward ratio for thieves is borked, and I’m seeing less and less of other classes in sPVP and more and more thieves, with a dash of warriors and mesmers.
Asmodean — a mesmer’s downed state only contains one illusion generating power, and that’s phantasmal thief. That’s their three button. It only comes into play if they can survive their downed time for, what is it, five or six seconds? Beyond that, mesmer downed powers are pretty meh. The cloak and teleport is useful, but players have become pretty savvy to which one is the real mesmer, so it’s not really a saving grace any more.
that said, glass cannon phantasms do pretty good damage, but you probably shouldn’t be leaving their phantasms alone once you’ve downed the mesmer.
We also hate him because he’s a Gary Stu.
Trahearne is so awesome that every other thread is already about him.
Deso’s offensive petered out, leaving me two points of interest and one vista shy of getting my gold star.
kitten—.
Also, if you’re so sure that people just need to ‘man up’, why not take on that oh-so-manly challenges of leading another server to victory and transfering to another server? I am sure those declaring that others ought to ‘man up’ will be the first to click the server transfer button to a losing server to show us how good their skills are by turning those battles around with their superior skills and organizational capabilities.
People who are winning are always going to think they’re entitled to their win because of their superior grit/determination/skill. They are never going to consider structural imbalances. It is much better, and more satisfying, to be able to look down their nose at people and feel better. ‘I am a winner’, they will say, ‘and the rest of you must man up and be like me, as you do not deserve the rewards I have reaped for clicking the server transfer button or winning the server pick lottery’. It never fails.
All this aside….
Ultimately, the ranking system will provide some relief, as better population servers will be matched with similar servers, and lower population servers will be matched with lower population servers. Once the ranking system does what it is supposed to do, then various tweaks and limits can be accounted for. At some point, free transfers must also end, as people will simply continue to transfer to servers where they will feel they have a better shot of winning. As population condenses into fewer and fewer servers, WvW will suffer on those other servers, for those that remain. This is bad for the people on both sides of the equation… . those who must endure longer queues, and those who want to play but can rarely field a full enough team to actually begin moving the WvW map. The dust must be allowed to settle so that now premature decisions are made about the shape of WvW into the future., and Arenanet is the only one with all the data and metrics to know exactly what player numbers are and participation matters that exist in it.
One must wait and see how things bottom out before structural changes can be considered in the long run, as the law of unintended consequences does come into effect. Limits, queueing, and more are a fact of life. They exist to protect the game and ensure that it is fun for everyone, even the losers. After all, one must keep the loser coming back to lose again with the allure that he might be able to win the game at some point, if he only tries harder next time and gets better.
So I went into a game looking for a fun match. Ran into a guy and his guildy on opposite teams, trading points back and forth. While everyone else was sub 50 glory, they were sitting at 200, just capping points back and forth with their friends..
Why on earth do people think they can get away with this stuff? I really hope Anet will act on this. If left unchecked, it’ll do a lot of damage.
