My OP wasnt about shatter builds. Frankly I can accept high damage from any class if its avoidable.
Shatter builds are strong but I’m at peace with the fact that i can see it coming and avoid it.
Shatters require the mesmer to time it correctly and allows me a chance to position myself to defend against it.
Phantasms damage, whether in a shatter build or phantasms build is just pure random.
Dodging the burst attack from phantasms is almost close to pure luck.
Not every profession can efficiently auto-attack them down.
And having to blow cooldowns to be rid of them is a joke too.
My qualm is that where every profession requires a mixture of offensive and defensive play, the phantasms are just self controlled, honing missiles that can do alot of damage.
Shatter builds are strong as it is, do they really require the extra 2k-3k from an illusionary unload or burden?
Pure phantasm builds should be based on the utility of the phantasm..and then force the mesmer to utilise their weapon for pure damage. (the option to shatter them still remains)
Having to battle with your sword/pistol or GS while your phantasms provide cripple, bleeds, protection, regeneration seems like a legit playstyle to me without the need for them to dish out the extra damage.
Buffing weapon damage in the process doesnt bother me. Once again, its avoidable.
It comes down to skill and positioning. And i can accept that rather than be pummeled with close to unavaoidable damage while the mesmers only goal there-after is to avoid you.
Keep clones as they are.
Remove all damage from phantasms. Keep them as utility.
Phantasms are summoned in order to receive their utility benefits. i.e cripple, bleeds, whatever you wish to think of.
Both are still able to be shattered for current damage.
Buff weapon damage to make up for it.
You’v now still retained the ‘idea’ of a mesmer, being illusive and confusing on the battlefield. However their phantasms are now used as buffs/utility rather than a direct damage source.
Call this a rant if you wish, that’s what it is.
Out of respect for competitive skill based pvp and my participation in it, I can no longer handle things being summoned to do 80% of your damage while your left to play hide and seek with your opponent.
The ele downed state is actually one of the most offensive imo.
I know its difficult to swallow that when we go down, unless your team can interupt the incoming stomps, we’re finished.
However, if they do. That 3 second immobilize is a very effective way to finish off the kill target and possibly land a counter stomp.
Just wondering, How does Arena Net feel about an idea where guilds have the option to save up and meet certain (difficult) prerequisites to purchase or ‘rent’ their own keep within WvWvW?
This option would also allow a quick teleport button. Allowing you to teleport straight to your keep (where you might have a few vendors, ability to setup seige etc) in times of trouble.
Keeps could only be lost if an opposing guild had enough members present to ‘claim’ it and fund the ‘repair’ cost of actually converting it to their own? Until which point the keep still technically belonged to the owner guild granted that they could physically reclaim it. (maybe within a certain time limit?)
This would stop random zergs from free-loading a keep. However they could still participate in the process of helping a properly formed guild in claiming someones keep.
Its just an idea, I can understand there would be a ton of difficulty justifying and actually implementing such a feature.
Alternatively, if GvG is planned to be implemented along the lines of GW1, then this idea would perhaps be pointless. But Im just throwing it out there.
Been running 8v8 spvp all weekend. Average game had 6-9 thieves out of 16 players. Is that enough meta to know something needs to be fixed?
I run a elementalist with 30 points in toughness but still get burnt down in less than a second. The record was 1 hit for 10500 damage.
You speak of meta yet your basing it off 8v8 hot-join?
30 points in toughness tells us nothing. All it tells me is you ran a minimum of 1200 toughness.
If we consider the thief that hit you for 10k might have died within 2 seconds of being focused. Should we nerf his damage so next time, within the 2 seconds he has to live, he should only do 5k?
Would that be fair?
People run rediculous builds in 8v8 hotjoin. Builds that you don’t see in 5v5 tournament.
The same thief you call nerf on, is asking for a buff verse a proper 5v5 team when he finds himself in downed state before even stepping foot on a node.
There’s more to consider than just raw numbers in pvp. And even less so in 8v8.
I’m not disagreeing with what changes may or may not need to be made.
But it’s definately not going to be based off an argument like that.
They’re going to do what they think is right. Based on the game they created.
Stop resisting change, and learn to play the cards your dealt.
They don’t want extremes to be overly effective in their pvp, simple as that.
Glass cannon builds exist atm, but they’re not as viable in tournament play just from the sheer amount of aoe going round a node. Thats not to say you can’t use them or they dont work. But it promotes creativity, having to apply that glass cannon build to a very specific niche.
If one extreme cannot exist without dire ‘consequences’, then the other extreme shouldn’t be allowed to exist either without the same level of consequences.
Bunker builds being as effective as they are now, just creates stagnant points on the map. 2-3 bunkers to hold 2-3 nodes. The simplest formula of success.
The game has been created to allow for so much more creativity in each teams approach to victory.
The ability for a team to hold or capture a node should not be based off a build, but rather skill and coordination.
Good stuff Arena Net.
100% confidence.
blah blah blah, I suck at this game. Nerf abilities I don’t know how to counter please. That’s all I see.
I love Spvp in this game. At first, I didn’t enjoy it very much because I was getting roflstomped unmercifully. The game was new and I was still learning about my class and getting used to the abilities other class’ use in combat.
But, with a little practice, patience, and knowledge, I have learned to be a force to be reckoned with.
The real problem is everyone thinks they’re a pro player and when they lose to someone, they blame it on the class being broken. I’ll tell you a secret: Every class is overpowered in the right hands.
TLDR: L2P
(Tip: I joined only Lobbies with 6 or less people so I can get some good 1v1s going to practice and get better. Not saying you can’t get better in an 8v8, but it’s harder imo. )
Well said
I hope Arena Net go old school style on these people and ignore the baby crying in the cot.
They need to learn
Why on earth do you want ‘rewards’ for doing what you like?
If you like pvp, case closed. You do it
If you dont like pvp, why are you doing it?Once the ranking system will be in place I hope the ‘purpose’ of pvping will be clear to most of you…
Until then, my question stands.
I don’t know for others, but my reward is my progress.
Keeping a track of my progress, how good I am, how much do I have to train to become better.
You can’t be better if there is no competition, you can’t know how good you are if you don’t have tools to show it to you.I am kind of PvPer that you can call hardcore, or in other words, competitive.
Not every PvPer is like that, a lot of them are casual who just like killing others and have fun.My fun is my progress. While I was playing cs:s I was casual one at first, then I have learned there is so called cw=clan war.
First time I got into team that played it, casualy, I fell in love with it.
I was driven into mindset of competitive PvPer, I wanted to play and to win vs better teams.
I trained a lot. Yes, there was time I didn’t have so much fun, there isn’t much fun in playing DM or aim maps 1-2 hours a day, but when I started to learn tactics, counter tactics and all other tricks, like how to use usefull flashes, smokes etc., I had lot of fun.PvP in this game is casual at this moment. It isn’t competitive.
To make it competitive you have to have ranks, you have to have range of skills, you have to have progression. If you are learning to play guitar, and you just learnt playing with chords and your friends liked it and praised you, that would be it. End of your progression.
But, if you would have listened to solo guitar players, or fingerstyle players, then you would want to be like them. And you would start your progression again, you would now have a purpose to do it.That is what we want! And please understand it.
I know a lot of you here are casual, who don’t understand the mindstate of competitive player, you maybe even call us geeks, or weird, or no lifers, but it’s not the whole picture, it’s very shallow one.I myself have hobbies 5 days a week, singing classes, dancing classes, I am teaching others how to play guitar, I am in collegue, I am seeing with my girlfriend almost every day.
And I still play this game, or any other game for hours a day, watching tv shows, reading forums.I am probably working a lot more then you ever did while not having a job, but I still can put 5 hours a day in games.
Don’t judge what you don’t know.
I want this 5 hours, sometimes less, some days I don’t even play, but! I want them to have a purpose!
You have your fun being casual, and this game is perfect for it.
My fun is brainstorming ideas, tactics and builds, which I can’t do in this game at this state.
Only thing we want is to have this possible for us.We don’t have it, even tho it was promised to us. Yes, that makes us angry, that makes us QQ on forums and it’s only because we like gw2, we wouldn’t bother otherwise.
Thank you for reading.
Look buddy, I admire your post. I can see your really sincere with your ideas and such… But I think you misread not only my post but the whole underlying point i was trying to make…
I mentioned, ONCE RANKING COMES OUT….that is when your ‘purpose’ will become evident. As will your ‘reward’.

Any self-respecting pvper will learn to play the cards he was dealt rather than make attempts at changing them.
People sat down and produced a sport/art form out of poker.
A game of 5 cards.
Here you have objectives, differing professions, downed state, utilities, dodge, boons, conditions, terrain, teammates.
Arena Net gave you ‘rules’ and a field.
Master it.
Arena Net please don’t listen to any of this nonsense.
Do your thing, do it well.
Release when ready.
That is all.
