Please improve the Looking for Group tool

One more thing to consider:

New players that do not know that they have to complete Story Mode before being able to do paths, will join any group they see for the dungeon they want to do.
Only to be kicked and most probably insulted when the group realized that the guy cannot go into the dungeon and they have to continue to search for the last team member they need.

Whereas if you automatically disable the checkbox based on the what the player can access, this situation will be avoided because the only choice the first time will be Story Mode.

The looking for group (lfg) has been a missing feature from day 1 of Guild Wars 2.

While I am happy to finally see it ingame, I just find it useless in the end.

The reason is that I still have several dungeons I did not do the Story Mode (SM) for yet.
And some other dungeons I prefer to do some paths and not others.

So I was pretty disappointed when I saw the LFG tool is basically just a ‘Write about what you want to do here’ tool.

I expected it to have checkboxes with 3-4 choices (depending on the number of paths in the dungeon) for each dungeon.
Let say I want to do Ascalonian Catacombs in SM (either because I never did it before or because that’s the one I prefer), I should be able to check ‘Story Mode’ and then wait for my party to fill up with people who want to do it.
If I want SM and/or path 1, I check both (if I have done SM first for that dungeon).

I understand that it is not much different from writing a ‘I want to do this and that’.
But I think it would be much more intuitive to use.

You could filter the existing groups based on the checkboxes checked too.

The way it is now I am not going to use the LFG very much, and considering the low number of groups I saw in the LFG (1~2 max per dungeon) I am guessing that it will be vastly underused considering its potential.

I also understand that it is the beta version of it.
And that it exactly while I am providing what I consider useful feedback on it as well as a simple suggestion to improve it.

I say simple because I am not asking the tool to start to try to mix and match people to groups.
Just give us a move natural way to choose what we want.

My 2 cents to improve an otherwise great game. (love the Living Story so far.)

Version 1.5 is out.

I added support to automatically remove the empty timers and the unknown timers that some people get.
As I cannot reproduce the issue on my computers, I am hoping that what I did will fix the issue.
If it happens again, send me a message and I will see what else I can do.

I also added a new option to have the tool has top most (in front of everything else) in compact mode.
Go to Options -> Properties -> Top Most in Compact Mode
The option is disabled by default to keep the old behavior, but it is persisted if you change it.

That should do it.

hi, if you open regedit you can go down to Compuer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Guild Wars 2 Timers

There you can delete the key ‘timers’
That will effectively reset the timers you are watching.

Basically:

The first time you start the tool it will ask you to configure various parameters:

  • Region/server you play on
  • At what time the server reset occurs for you
  • Play a sound before the events start
  • Start when windows starts

Then you can select the timers you want to get notifications for under ‘Options → Monitor’

At that point you can simply go play GW2 while the tool is running in the background of Windows.

For each event that you selected, the tool will show you how much time is left before the next occurrence.

In the Options/properties you can select a sound to play when the event is about to begin.
When the event is about to begin you will hear that sound (unless you turned off the sound on your computer).
And that should tell you that one of the events you want to participate to is about to being.

Then, if you want you can right click on the event in the tool and select ‘Copy WP’ then you alt-tab back to GW, open the chat (local or map) and paste (ctrl+v).
The event waypoint plus the remaining type will be displayed in the chat.
So you can click on the waypoint to go participate to the event.

When the event is done, you can alt-tab again to the tool to update the timer, and mark the event as being looted (right click on the event) (you get the extra chest only once every 24Hours)
That way you can keep track of the events you already went to.

The event color changes based on the status of the event:

  • Gray = nothing happening
  • Blue = event is about to beging
  • Red = the event is in progress or in the spawning window

Various icons can also appear in the event:

  • Swords: event in progress
  • Hourglass: Event is late
  • Pile of gold: Event not looted yet

I think that covers pretty much everything.
If you have more specific questions, do not hesitate to ask here, I will try to answer as fast and as best as I can.

Thank you.

Version 1.4 is out

  • Integrated some GW2 API (mainly getting the servers list)
  • Fixed the application to use the new format from Guild Wars Temple
  • Fixed the ‘Copy WP’ function to correctly copy the WP to the clipboard. Removed all support to get waypoints from the Guild Wars 2 Wiki. Because they changed the way to data is accessed, I cannot extract the WP anymore from them. Instead the tool now holds all the waypoint. That should also make it a bit faster because it does not have to go fetch/parse the data.

My apologies for taking so long to fix these issues.
As my wife will give birth to our twins next week, and that makes our life is a kittenaotic at the moment.
After that things should go back to normal.

But I am not sure you understand that my application only gets the data from the Guild Wars Temple website and simply adds a few functionalities to it.

Then 2 things:
- Guild Wars Temple already have a tool for mobile.
- If you want to use my code, you have to at least put some credits for me and the Guild Wars Temple site.

Did anyone get/test the latest version using the auto-update feature?
I am not sure it is working properly.
I had to manually trigger the update (from the menu) yesterday.
But maybe it is because I developing on the same machine and that messed up the mechanism.
So I would like to know if anyone had the same issue.

To reproduce, start the tool, click on auto-update.
If it tells you that there is a new version, just install it.
That will confirm that there is a problem with the auto-check for new versiokittentartup.
Otherwise everything is fine and it’s just my machine who is messing up.

I have the update ready for the ‘Event WP’ copy-thingy.
The only problem is that the page linked by Sawnic is not complete.
I started to complete it when I was contacted by it original creator.
He says that he is working on a new version that will be better/complete and that he should be able to release it in a couple of days hopefully.

I tried the updated version and so far it is working well.
So I am just waiting for the WP codes page to be updated to release the new version.

As for the multi-character support, I will think about it.
Right now it is not high on my priority list, and as I said before I am rather busy lately (and about to be even more busy when my wife give birth to our twins in about 2 months…)
So unless I feel a feature can be done quickly (ex: copy WP), I have to delay adding new feature that does not benefit most of the users to later. :-/

As Codpin pointed, I do not really see the need to add the ‘per character’ support because the events are going to be account based, not character based soon.
Right now I am quite busy, and I would prefer to not spend time adding a feature that will be used only for a limited time and then made useless by a patch.

I will not add a button to update the timer from the tool (I know how to do it, I have the data for it, and it’s actually pretty simple to implement)
The reason is that the Guild Wars Temple admin was kind enough to let me use his data.
I do not want to remove even more traffic from his site by making him a simply data repository for my own tool.
Plus there are already trolls that keep updating the timers on some servers and I do not want to make their life easier by allowing them to use my application to annoy more people..

The WP copy/paste in the game is using a mechanism that belongs to the game only.
The only thing I could do is let it copy in the clipboard and paste in the chat.
Which would not achieve much in the end.
As Codpin suggested (again) it is better to ask the first time where is an event in map chat (Lion’s Arch can give you some great help) and then remember where the event is for next time.

Healix, I cannot use background images for multiple reasons.

  1. A background image can make the text difficult to read
  2. I would have to extract/include an image for each event Guild Wars Temple monitors

The tool extract all the timers on the fly when it starts from Guild Wars Temple.
That is why Fuda thought I impletement the Golem Mark II event and requested a way to be notified of new timers (I added this feature in version 1.2)
Because of that I do not know in advance which timer will exist in the tool.
Therefore I cannot have an image ready for any new Event that might be monitored.
In 1.2 I added support to change the background color of each timer based on its status. I hope that will help people to see better the status.

About the trolls:
As I said before, there is nothing I can do about this.
If some idiot decided the ruin the game for everyone on his server there is nothing I can do about it.
It is up to the Guild Wars Temple website admin to find a solution to this.
Maybe you can send him an email with your suggestion?
I do not think he will bite you.

  • Added support to let users select their language (Default is Windows current Culture)
  • Fixed some localization
  • Added mechanism to save/load the settings to file in case they cannot be saved in Windows registry.
  • Added support to show the new timers that have been added to Guild Wars Temple since last time you ran the tool.
  • Timers background will change colors based on the status of the timer:
    - Nothing to signal (or already looted) = default light gray background
    - Less than x minutes before the event = Light Skye Blue
    - Event in progress (or in windows because I cannot distinguish them) = Light Coral.

The reason behind the choice of colors:
Light blue because you have a few minutes to pack up and make your way to the event.
Light red because you need to get moving if you want to get there in time to loot anything.

  • Play sound x minutes befores event begin
  • Autostart when Windows start

I went through the list of features people asked for.

So this is the first major update of the tool.

  • Added icon for outdated events (Icon: a small hourglass)
  • Added icon for events that you will get maximum reward for (once every 24H, resets at server daily reset) (Icon: a pile of gold). Right click on the timer for the event you looted already, select ‘Already looted’. This will effectively disable the alert sound for this event until the next server reset. (If you want to re-enable the alert sound, simply unselect ‘Already looted’)
  • Showing time remaining until server daily reset
  • Fixed an issue with auto-updating that would reset the settings to default
  • Only using 1 thread now to update all the counters
  • The link in the About box is now clickable to open the website directly
  • Improved the Auto-update mechanism. Starting next update the tool will automatically download the new version and restart.
  • Added an ‘Extended’ view mode that shows the location and wp of the events
  • The events are now loaded from the Guild Wars Temple are load time. So any new timer on the website is automatically added and supported.

Hm… is there any way you’ll be able to incorporate this as one of those… Windows 7 widgets on the right side of your screen if you choose to have them? I know I for one am HORRIBLE about remembering to login/start something (ex: my Xfire that I sometimes entirely forget to login), so if it could be maybe some sorta nice little widget there…

Regardless, very cool idea there. I like the idea of sound notification set to so many minutes before.

Also, perhaps when it actually enters the window, you can make the numbers a different color like the site does?

The tool can already auto-start.
Just open the options popup and you will find a checkbox there to enable auto-start when Windows starts.
Unless you mean something else ?

For the colors, I thought about it but could not find a nice color set that would work. Guild Wars Temple has a black background for each timer that allows the colors to ‘shine’ to the human eye.
I am using a grey background (and don’t ask me to put a black background… yuk…)
That is why I decided to show an icon instead when the event is going on.
But I will try again to find a color set.
Or, just like I use an icon when the event is ongoing, I could use another icon to show that an event is ‘late’.
I will see what I find better.

Thanks for reporting this issue.
I will take a look at it as soon as possible.
I probably forgot to start the timers after the initial startup.

Thanks also for advertising the tool.

I would love to see a source that had timers for many other events, such as the temples in Orr, Plinx, Tar in R&D, Meg, Gladiator, Rakkan and much more. I beleive Plinx is on a 45 min timer, but not 100% sure.

My tool is based on the timers available at Guild War Temple
If they were to support more timers, then I would add more to the tool too.

So far with my tool you can monitor:
- The Shatterer
- Tequatl The Sunless
- Claw of Jormag
- Megadestroyer
- Temple of Balthazar
- Temple of Grenth
- Temple of Lyssa
- The Frozen Maw
- Shadow Behemoth
- Fire Elemental

if you want more timers, you should ask them to add more

On a side note, my code is not obfuscated, so if you want to look at the code, go ahead.
There is nothing to hide in it.

Guild Wars 2 Timers is a small tool I created to keep track of the major events timer in Guild Wars 2.

There are a lot of events happening in Guild Wars 2.
And it is not always easy to keep track of all those we want to take part of.

Guild Wars Temple was kind enough to put together a webpage that keeps track of the major events.
But even with their great website it can still be difficult to not miss an event that we want to do.

That is why I created this tool.
Basically the tool will go fetch the timers from the Guild Wars Temple page and use them to display the timers you want to keep track of.
And it can play a small sound a few minutes before the events start to remind you that you show maybe go to the event zone to participate.

The admin of Guild Wars Temple has been very kind to agree to let me make my tool available to everyone.

I will update the News section when I do modifications to the tool.
So be sure to check it from time to time.

If you find any bugs please leave a message ingame, or on the Guild Wars 2 forum, in this post.
I will come read if often and try to fix the bugs as soon as possible.

You can get the tool here
