All three of these features are planned, yes. It is our tradition to not discuss in detail any feature until we have it fully implemented enough that we can talk about it with confidence, as we don’t want to promise a feature to work one way and then end up having it work a different way. We’ll save details on all of those until they are ready to be talked about.
Chaplan will be putting out a blog post in the next few days that summarizes where we stand with PvP right now, and where we’re headed. From there we’ll continue to update as other Esports features come online.
Our focus right now is making sure absolutely all of the potential issues/bugs with base tournaments and rewards are 100% cleaned up before we introduce any form of more serious competition. We’re also trying to make sure we’ve given enough time for the base strategies to develop, and for any skills/builds that are out of balance are identified. Once we’re totally convinced things are in a solid state, you’ll start seeing a roll out of major PvP esports features and we’ll get this thing going like crazy. Take this opportunity now to learn your classes, learn your builds, lockdown strategies for your teams and get ready! Once we start rolling out the esports features, it’ll build up rapidly from there.
You released a game pandering to PvP players with absolutely no competitive PvP content. Four maps (all 3-point conquest), no ranking system, no real tournaments system, no hub for competitive PvP, etc… And now you won’t even give us a timetable as to when we’re actually going to see what we paid money for.
For sPvP players right now there’s literally nothing to do. Grinding ranks is basically impossible after 30 since the glory requirement is more than all the other ranks put together. Paid tourneys give crap rewards and aren’t competitive in the slightest. Hot Join was boring a week after release.
Do whatever you want, but people aren’t going to wait. They’ll flock to MoP or League or whatever once the hype dies down, and you won’t get those players back when you decide to add content and balance the game a couple months down the line. Your game was built off hype, the only reason its popular beyond GW1 fans is because people are so disillusioned with basically every MMO since WoW.
Problem is, doing free tournaments is pointless in every aspect you can think of..
Practice = Can’t if you don’t get matched with people of your same level.
Grinding = Customization, not worth the grind to 100.
Learn = If you play the same amount that the people that BUYED this game for the eSport aspect or even the general sPvP aspect, you know that you’re capped until you get to compete against other teams.
ArenaNet doesn’t realize that because of them not adding party invite for hot-join, making it 8v8 and being free tournaments the only feature that lets you queue as a party is killing the PvP.
Balance comes after you get this features (ladder, custom matchs, spectator mode, etc), not before, you’re going to keep balancing the game always, but you won’t have the player base forever if they left the game and get hooked into something else cause the company failed to deliver something in the right moment, just because the game is free after you purchase it, doesn’t means that players are going to get back to play it.
Every game that focuses on being an eSports comes with almost all this features (and no, League of Legends it’s not an example, it never was designed to be a eSport), SC2, Dota 2, CSGO, they all have the basic tools from the start to make them an eSports. A lot of people purchased this game for the PvP and eSports aspect only, and you guys failed to deliver the most basic stuff, but we waited, and we are going to keep waiting, but not for too long.

it is good to have an answer, but i think the time to figure the early game pvp scenarios and builds has already pass. The game is gettin old without the tools to compete. We need several features to keep the competitive pvp running, but the most important at the moment is the chance to create custom games, so the big teams will be able to face each others, and the small and medium communitys would have the tools to make their own tourneys.
sry for the bad english, not my native language.
^ This.
The time for testing strategies and learn our classes has reached the limit, we are on a point that we need competitive tools to develop better strategies and learn or create new builds so the game develops even further. If you guys were listening to the eSport community you would know this for a long time, we are tired of playing tournaments and 1/10 you get to play with someone of your same level; its not fun for us, its not fun for the people that just play it for fun with their friends when they get roflstomped by more experience or organized teams.
Show us some love, we need features to improve our community, not blog posts about the state of PvP and eSports, we already know where we are, isn’t late yet.
Arenas could be fun for doing duels and stuff like that, but for competition it’s a bad idea, it’s better from the spectator point of view to see objectives going on than watching healthbars fighting.
Still can’t believe we are doing all this fuzz for a blog post.
I want patchs to play
Nice i appreciate that the devs finally gave us a response on this thread. I hope this blog post actually has some insight on whats coming right now and not just a personal opinion on the state of PvP.
I don’t understand how you people can take these issues so calmly. I mean come on. WTF is Arenanet doing. At least address the issues at hand and make up some push over response to keep the masses happy.
It would be different if the entire section of the game known as S-PvP was fully working to begin with, without these additions that should of came stock but it is just adding insult to injury when S-PvP in it’s current form does not even work as intended.
We can’t do more than this, if we take an aggressive stance our threads are going to get deleted/locked and it’s not the purpose of this thread, we need answers and we need this features implemented, asap.
bump – would love an Anet response.
We all would.
I like how they are ignoring us and replying to useless stuff
They’re making it pretty clear that the pvp is their side project.
“Guys good news, you have to wait for our next expansion to see all the pvp features!”

I’d say farther than “if they want it to be an Esport.” If they still want people to care about sPvP at all, they need to add these features, or at least say something, and they need to do it soon.
I agree. At this point its more like if they want anyone who wants to mainly pvp to still play the game after a month.
I think if they were really hell bent on releasing Aug 28th, they should have just made it PvE only, and then put out a free expansion later introducing PvP once its actually able to hold the attention of players.
The first week of sPvP was pretty fun. The organized teams were mostly the only ones queueing and you’d get good games and Kyhlo was usually a challenge.
Now people have realized 8v8 is a worthless garbage format and they get more stuff from losing most of the time in 5v5, so more and more people are queuing tourney, completely diluting the competitive level. Now the whole 3 maps is likely to be a series of randoms of about the same skill level and its just a faceroll.
^ pretty much this, its impossible to get matched against good teams unless you make a sync with them and cross some fingers to get matched with that people.
these things are coming but i dont think they’ll come before people get bored and leave. its kind of like SWTOR taking 8 months to put out a rated system for PvP. who is going to play sPvP as it is for 8 months?
No one, if they want this game to be an eSport some day, they need to implement Custom Matchs/Tournaments and a ELO/MMR system, most of the people that is trying to play competitive is getting tired of the sPvP, there’s no way to make tournaments or to play against people of the same level and that’s really not good for any game that wants to be an eSport.
Few issues that need to be addressed.
Arenanet has been quoted as saying they are aiming to make GW2 an E-Sport. However, BOTH brands of PvP in this game lack any shape/form/resemblance of an E-sport.
There is no paid tournaments at this point, which just seem to give better loot? than our current free mode. There is no ELO/MMR system. There is no ladder to climb, and therefore no way to measure one’s skill and improvement as a player over time. There is no dueling, no spectator mode, and a progression system based entirely around cosmetics.
While this is fun, at least at first, it doesn’t hold up. The entire point of an MMO is Progression… To feel like we are getting better. This is established by leveling up, gear, appearance, etc. The one area where you would think we would need it most, (Ranked/Competitive/Structured/E-Sport whatever PvP) it’s entirely absent.
I’m here for the long haul, but these are things that must be addressed before the PvP in this game goes anywhere.
-ELO/MMR System. Otherwise the best team NA will be in a pool with the randoms who don’t coordinate at all. Without this, there is also no “proof” of one’s improvement. I would love for the matchmaking system to be similar to hot join, but only last for one match. Tournament style ELO system would be clunky.
-Spectator mode. Watch friends games, watch big tournaments, etc. Crucial to make this game an E-Sport.
-Downed state needs to be modified. Currently its too strong. I would be perfectly fine if it were completely removed in ranked play. Otherwise, lower the damage output, remove the interrupts/stealths, and replace them with a [Fury] buff or something along the lines, depending on the class. There are no second chances in PvP.
Downed state is fine, some classes are lacking good skill to use on downed state. Agree with the rest.
It should be common knowledge that PvE is the majority playerbase of most MMO, and I assume GW2 as well, and there have been a lot of issues they’ve needed to focus on with a higher priority to begin with. Once things settle down a bit, if they haven’t addressed a lot of the S/T-PvP issues, then I would start worrying. However, that little bit of grace period time is starting to reach its limits with a lot of people, so some info soon would definitely be good on what to expect.

I love pvp too, but please, let them do what they need to do to ensure the game survives long enough for PvP to matter.
The issue is that the sPvP side of the table has been broken and unattended to, significant problems such as tournaments not working and missing chests took a long time to be acknowledged and fixed. Coupled with the lack of missing features, and lack of communication about the status of said features/state of sPvP—is enough for any person who solely plays PvP to be worried.
Things have settled, and for a game who wants to have eSports as a priority—I’m not seeing it.
You guys have blatantly missed the point we were hitting on. There are still bugs in PvE (high level DE bugs to start), which as stated, has a bigger community going for it than PvP at the moment. Should the PvE draw fail, PvP would soon follow. Also PvP hasn’t been left out in the cold either. They have fixed the tourny rewards (as you stated) and did some slight skill balancing (see Guardian).
Just like everything else in this game, things take time. Just chill out and practice. I agree that a word or two would be nice, but I’m not losing my marbles because “things aren’t getting done” when they kinda are.
This would be ok if there’s only 1 big team of developers doing all the content, wich is not the case, they have a PvP Team, a Balance Team, PvE Team, etc etc, everyone should be working on their own area with no problems now that they don’t have any massive login/connectivity issues like we did the first weeks.
They just announced in another thread that they would add a feature to allow guilds to purchase private servers. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/How-to-rent-a-pvp-server/first#post57482
This is not an announcement, they are repeating themselves.

If they continue to neglect the PvP community, the s/tPvP portion of the game, the portion that will “survive” the longest in the longrun, will not survive. People will get bored with GW2 lack of competitive PvP features in place (completely embarrassing what we got for a game that was touted as an “e-sport”) and they will migrate to other games with more competitive features and some if not many of these players won’t ever look back to GW2.
Agree, we need at least Custom Tournaments to move on, ranking wont do much really, dota 2 is highly competitive without any ranking system, but the ability to create tournaments let organizations to create tournaments and leagues.
Hopefully we will get a response from the PvP Team soon….
Agreed, we need some changes, for the PvP community the game is feeling old without any feature that let us move foward as an eSport, IMO the most wanted features right now are Custom Tournaments & MMR/ELO System.
