I have a 670 and have zero issues with frame rate. I’m easily above 60FPS on max settings even in WvW – this is since upgrading the CPU to an i7 2600K, mind.

Last week I was running on an i5-2400 and had to turn reflections and shadows off to stay above 40FPS in WvW.

Impossible. I have a GTX 680 and i7-2700k @ 4 GHz and I drop to 25-30 FPS in large battles in WvWvW. There is no way you are getting 60 FPS on max settings in large castle sieges.

Seriously, this “CPU bound” argument has GOT to stop. I have an i7-2700k @ 4 GHz and I get the SAME performance as reported here with a GTX 680. Am I CPU bound too? What do you suggest I get as an upgrade so I can get more than 20 FPS in WvWvW considering all the components in my rig are nearly brand new and all carefully selected for performance and quality.

Bottom line: the game has problems with FPS in WvWvW and other areas and it is NOT our hardware.

I understand your frustration but just to reiterate, don’t go spending any money yet man.
From someone who’s been suffering from, studying this issue since the release date the only surefire way of getting good FPS is to own a Desktop Based i7 (read, not a laptop) preferably current generation 3770k or superior.

The powerful i7 is the only thing that people having a good game experience seem to have in common. GPU doesn’t seem to matter to any great extent. RAM is more or less not a factor. The only thing that changes the game experience from bad/mediocre to good is the CPU and that will require you to pay around $1000+ for a whole new system.

It’s simply not worth it, nor is it fair that you should be expected to own a system like this to play the game. When there are people with laptop i7 processors and desktop based i3-i5s who are getting <30 FPS in PVE it’s the game with the problem, not your computer.

The issue is stability, and that’s for ANet to work out. Admittedly your system is old but you should be able to achieve a playable game with low settings. That has not been provided for you. You shouldn’t be expected to spend more money on hardware to get a stable low spec game experience.

Thank you so much everybody who helped me, it is appreciated. I understand i don’t have the greatest pc of all time but its nice for somebody to clarify that i shouldn’t be having as much of an issue as i am.

I also find it funny that somebody had to consolidate all the FPS issues into a new thread. Obviously shows how many people are suffering because of it.

As I reported first when these forums first opened (my thread and/or posts have since been deleted or merged somewhere that I can’t find them, which I am still a little upset about), I am having framerate issues even with an i7-2700k @ 4 GHz and a GTX 680. I’ll post my dxdiag again so you can all see.

Today I was in WvWvW in a large battle getting 20 FPS. I checked my GPU usage: 20%. CPU usage was similar, around 50%. Something is wrong, and it is with this game or the Nvidia drivers, or both.

To ArenaNet:

I appreciate your response so far in regards to my (and others’) problems regarding FPS issues on higher-end systems. However, I think it is unacceptable for you to merge the thread I started for users with FPS problems into a thread about crashing. Our issues have nothing to do with crashing (in fact, my game has not crashed once in over 140 hours played so far), but my FPS issues are NOT resolved.

Contrary to others in this thread, 30 FPS in large WvWvW battles is not acceptable for a system as capable as mine. None of my hardware is being fully utilized and it is a problem with either the Nvidia drivers, your engine, or a combination of both. This thread needs to be separated again and you need to let us know what is being done to resolve this issue if anything. My low FPS thread was the most active thread on this forum, so obviously this is an issue that many of us are experiencing and loathing. I look forward to your reply.

Thanks so much for the reports everyone! Just know that we haven’t forgotten about you all and we’re still looking into this issue. One thing I would like to note, however, is of the many causes for low performance for players with high end graphics cards is that their PCi-Express GPU is plugged into a 1x|4x slot rather than a 16x slot. For players who have recently upgraded their video cards, we recommend ensuring that the GPU is plugged into the proper PCi-Express slot for maximum performance.

Thank you so much for the update! Your tip is an important one, but I would also like to clarify that I am certain that my GPU is in a 16x slot, just so that you guys know for when you are looking into this problem.

Thanks again, love the game!

PvE is decent enough for me, sPvP it bogs down a little, but WvW going into a big fight it really starts crawling.

It’d be really interesting if you could give a vague overview of where you are with optimisation, whether there’s something coming down the pipe or if you’re reasonably confident that GW2 is firing on all (or most) cylinders and I need to stop putting off the upgrade. The other thing that would be interesting is the arenanet perspective on where the stress points are for performance.

As you can see from others in the thread, even with a current top-of-the-line system the best you will be doing in WvWvW is around 25 FPS in large battles. I’d hold off and see if they can optimize before you splurge on a new system.

Note: This was not happening to me prior to the patch released before the SECOND to FINAL stress test.

This is interesting because we have a similar setup but I did not play any of the stress tests to compare. But we are experiencing exactly the same symptoms so maybe they broke something somewhere around that time. I hope this helps them pinpoint the problem.

Turn down reflections and shaders. Those provide the biggest detriment to performance in WvWvW.

I said in a previous post that turning off ALL graphical options and turning all the settings to their lowest values, I saw a 5 FPS gain at best, or a 0 FPS gain at worst. It literally made no difference.

Okay, I just did a quick test in The Grove which is one of the areas where I am getting low GPU usage and low(ish) FPS. I was averaging around 45 FPS there, with an average GPU usage of around 60%.

During this time, my CPU never exceeded 40% usage, with no single core ever exceeding around 60% usage. So basically, half or more of my computer’s power is not even being utilized when I am getting lower FPS. I don’t think this is normal behavior.

None of my cores on my CPU are maxed at any time. I’ll go in game now with the CPU monitor up on my other screen to double check.

Also, here is my DxDiag.txt because I assume more data is better.

My i7-2700k is not bottlenecking. It’s never reaching full load on any of its 8 cores (note: I’ve also tried turning hyperthreading off because I know it causes issues in other games but I saw no noticeable difference in performance).

What settings do nVidia GTX 600 series users run in the panel to avoid crashes?

I have all settings set to “Application-controlled” and ambient occlusion turned OFF and I’ve had no problems other than lackluster performance (see the thread I started). I did have one driver crash about an hour ago like you described after I had been playing for around 4 hours, but I am overclocking slightly so I toned that down just a little because I thought that might be the cause (although I’ve played nearly 100 hours since head start without any driver crashes until that one).

The issue here is that my GPU usage is dropping to 50% and below when there is a lot of action going on. I don’t think this is normal behavior, and nothing in my machine should be bottlenecking the GPU. When I play other games or run benchmarking software, I am always at 100% GPU usage which is where it should be.

Also, 20-25 FPS may seem smooth to you, but I’m honestly not satisfied with anything below 60 FPS, because it does make for a significant difference in play, especially PVP.

I should also note that it seems like some sort of an issue with GW2 itself because changing video options results in absolutely no change in performance. I’ve tried lower resolutions, and even changing to the lowest possible settings and I only saw an improvement of a few FPS at best.

First of all, let me say that so far my experience with GW2 has been great. However, I am a little unsatisfied with my current performance given my gaming PC’s specs.

Here are my relevant specs:
GTX 680 slightly overclocked (temperatures in-check with stable performance)
i7-2700k @ 4 GHz (temperatures also okay here)
16 GB RAM

Normally I’m getting great performance of 100 FPS+ in most areas, but in WvWvW and in areas with high player populations like Lion’s Arch, I’m noticing my GPU usage drop to 50% or less and my FPS drop to 40 and below (as low as 20 to 25 in large battles in WvWvW).

I’m using the latest Nvidia beta drivers (306.02). I’m just wondering if you could give me some insight as to whether this level of performance is expected for a machine like mine or if there is some other underlying issue I might be facing with my PC.

Thank you!
