My FPS Fix (Motherboard issue)

After experiencing low FPS in game (8fps in LA with low settings). I went through many suggestions in this forum until I ran GPU-Z and noticed that my gfx card (AMD Radeon HD 6950) was stuck on PCI-Express x1 instead of x16.

Research indicated there were many possible reasons for this, including badly seated cards, dust and so on. My particular reason turned out to be my card being in the black coloured slot on my ASUS Motherboard – P8P67. Although this is marked on the board as x16, it is actually only x1, or x4 at most with a Bios setting and intended for use in crossfire setups. I had been happily playing WoW and Skyrim etc without noticing any particular problem. It took GW2 to flag it.

Moving the card to the primary PCI-E slot and reinstalling the drivers have taken my FPS in Lions Arch up to 45+ on best appearance setting.

I thought I would put this out there in case it can help anyone else. I feel as if I have a whole new game to explore now.

PCI express stuck at x1. Any help?

Like many players I’ve been experiencing bad FPS in this game (I’ve a post in the FPS thread). One thing I’ve noticed though after firing up GPU-Z is that my PCI express card seems to not be using everything it can. (I’m not techy so sorry about that).

It says under interface that my AMD Radeon HD 6900 is capable of PCI-express x 16 v2.0 but is currently running at pci-express x1 v2.0

I read elsewhere that running 3dmark can fix it but it didn’t. There was also no change when I fired up GW2.

Could this be causing my horrible frame rates? If so, how do I fix it? (Drivers all up to date and PC is set to high performance but no diff).

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi There,

I’d like to add my voice to the low FPS issues. Heres my situation (EU Player)

My partner and I play on the same spec machines.
i5-2500K 3.3ghz
8 gig ram
Win 7 × 64bit home edition
AMD Radeon HD 6900 series.

3meg internet link – best I can get here

Getting 15-30fps in open world – at low/medium settings. The auto settings are High.
9-20 in Divinitys Reach (9 around the bank area – with or without other players)
8-11 in Lions Arch (8 looking at fountain)
7-12 in Black Citadel (over the whole of the city)
I haven’t dared try WvWvW

As an aside, I ran the Heaven benchtest program in DX9 mode and got a range of 35-105fps, averaging 61fps.

I made most of the recommended changes in this thread on my machine, leaving my partners alone.
These have included:
Reinstalling gfx drivers (using driver sweeper inbetween)
Running as Admin and high priority
Machine is set to high performance
Running with game booster software

Ran speedtest to check link and ping (as an example, in WoW I get 20-30ms latency –
I dont know how to check this in GW2)

I haven’t tried the ram unlocker (as I read this has already been fixed) or .net
(will try tonight).

After this there is still no difference between my messed about machine
and partners unchanged machine.

I ran a Game Advisor test (which I will submit to A’Net later when I open a ticket).
Everything looked ok except I failed to connect to:

I know nothing about networks but I’m guessing a timeout isn’t good.

If anyone has any ideas I’d be happy to hear them, but from my noobish
nosing about it might be lag across the pond?

Thanks in advance for any comments.
