Ticket # 2033814
Hey everyone,
So I’ve been getting this error code every time I try to log into Guild Wars. The message that pops up along with this error reads something like “The game client could not connect to the log in server at this time. Please restart your game client and try again. Contact support if blah blah blah etc”
Disclaimer!!! -> I am somewhat of a kitten when it comes to tech stuff so please bear with me.
Some background: I recently started playing Guild Wars 2 again when my Winter break started. At home it works just fine. But ever since I moved to my apartment complex two days ago I have not been able to log in at all. My apartment complex provides internet. I am connected to it via an ethernet cable that is connected to a router which is then connected to a socket in the wall. I get the same error message when I tried to log into Guild Wars on another laptop, this one connected wirelessly. I have previously (back in May) been able to play Guild Wars 2 just fine in the exact same apartment complex. So I’m guessing this means that the settings for Guild Wars 2 or my apartment complex’s ISP changed somehow?
What I have tried:
First I did some searching by myself on the forums to see if I could fix this myself. I tried that thing where you add -clientport 80 or -clientport 443 in the properties menu of a guild wars 2 shortcut but it did not work. (To my understanding this forces the game to use ports 80 or 443 in order to bypass and restrictions that may have been placed on ports 6112 or that other required one that I forgot – correct me if I’m wrong). I also found a suggestion on the forums to add -repair in the same place in the properties menu of a guild wars 2 shortcut and tried that but that didn’t work either.
Contacting the smart IT people:
So at this point I contacted the IT people for my apartment complex’s ISP. Long story short they were not able to help me. I was told that ports 80 and 443 are used for basic internet stuff so those were not restricted or closed, but they did not know about the other two and would not be able to turn them on/unrestrict them just for me as this would cause a “load bearing” issue. I informed them that I was able to play Guild Wars 2 back in May with no problems, and they said that something must he changed on Arena Net’s end because the network settings have not been changed since then.
Contacting ArenaNet Support:
I submitted a ticket with ArenaNet Support (great response times, by the way), but they were also ultimately unable to help. The first thing they asked me to do was to download this thing called Game Advisor to gather some info about my system and internet connection and send them the report, which I did. Then, I was instructed to prevent background applications from automatically starting with Windows because that might have been the problem. No such luck. Next, they told me to run the command console as an administrator and type “netsh winsock reset”, and then try again. Nope did not work. Next, I was told to create a Guild Wars 2 shortcut, go to properties, and modify the end the “Target” line (like what I did with the clinetport 80 and 443 stuff) to add “assetsrv 174.35.71.9:80” and see if that worked. If it did not, they gave me 4 other ip addresses to try. 2/5 of these ip addresses gave me the exact same error as before upon trying to log in. The other 3 did not allow me to type my log in credentials at all – it was just stuck at “Downloading 0 (0 mbps)” or something and then it would switch to “Connection error(s) detected. Retrying…” After I told Anet support that these did not work, they said that there was nothing more they could do on their end and that according to the report I sent them I am suffering from data packet loss, and to contact my ISP and tell them that.
Sidenote: While running the Game Advisor program I left my network set up as is, which is basically an ethernet cable running from my laptop to the router which is then connected to the wall. Anet support, however, said that if possible I should connect my laptop directly to a modem instead of leaving it connected to a router. Should I have connected my laptop directly to that socket in the wall? The reason I did not was because I didn’t want to disconnect my roommates.
I am going to contact the ISP people again when I can, which is in like 15 hours but in the meantime does anyone have any idea what is going on or what else I can try? I’d really appreciate it. Also does it help if I attach the Guild Wars 2 test file that I sent to Anet?
Thanks
