I don’t understand people who just want to throw away a map without letting it get some work done to it before completely writing it off. Tangled depths was the same for pve, most players wrote that map off saying how terrible it is, yet anet worked on fixing it and it’s gotten a lot better. Ruins of Orr was also crap when it came out and it was fine tuned later on. I hate Tangled depths but you don’t see me running to the forums demanding it to be removed, nope I just zone over to auric basin and have my fun there. Could do the same if we had the 2/1 rotation.
The desert borderland also came out at a time when a lot of changes were happening, it created the perfect storm for wvw. Guild catapult supply increased, guildhalls grind, wvw guildhall upgrades, the earlier stability changes that encouraged pirate ship meta which was making wvw increasingly less fun, a brand new class that was turning combat upside down along with the new elite specs, auto upgrades. The expansion killed off roaming and havoc entirely.
Yes the desert borderland has problems, but let’s not pretend like the rest of the changes to wvw didn’t share in the population leaving wvw. Most of those other things have been tweaked(stability) or finally accepted(guild hall upgrades), it’s time to let the same happen for the desert bl.
Also your guild switched to pve over that bl? you guys are cray cray, those maps are 10x worse than the desert bl for the gimmicks and layouts, maybe Mo was right generally when you’re into wvw you’re really into pve.
First off, only the one guild I had been apart of for a majority of my WvW career had then turned to PvE in protest. The other I was way more active in at the time and mained in has stayed true to WvW the entire time. I don’t know the extent of the first mentioned guild’s motivations, other than they refused to WvW on the maps because they disliked them that much.
Second, the changes they put in didn’t really make me feel much better about the map at all. It was still hard to play in and felt extremely cramped to me, on top of still feeling like absolutely no objective actually mattered in the grand scheme of things. In that respect, it was very Edge of the Mists. “Eh, we can just back cap it for the exp”, if you get my drift? I don’t know how many of my guildmates share that perspective, but I can tell you most of us probably do. There was never incentive to keep or capture objectives except for ppt because no one came out to fight unless they knew they could run you over. Especially because there’s no place to fight without extreme heights around, extreme close quarters, or going very out of your way to get to an open field, which were few and far between my friend.
Admittedly the changes I got to observe made it better, but over all it’s not an enjoyable map for the mechanics that feel like they’re missing from it. And, like I said, I don’t want to say they should add the HoT stuff in because it would be very game breaking. It’s just always felt like there was something missing, and that the desert bl would make a great casual core raid map. I imagine it would be great fun if you had four teams, one to start on each corner of the map, and push into the middle oasis area and/or garrison for a giant boss fight. But as a WvW map? It’s abysmal. No offense, anet! I just think that in light of having to have a twitch castor interview commanders from across all servers and then polling us, you don’t play enough of the game type to know what players need or want. But I’m also of the firm belief that anet underestimates WvW as a game type and how interesting it would be as a grand scale type esport for spectatorship. Seriously, how cool would it be to watch your server or your favorite one and root for them like a sports team? Heck, imagine the merch if that’s how it was handled! haha
I’m also in the camp where I don’t understand you people for supporting bringing back the desert bl. For the time we had it, all I ever heard was how much people hated it. Maybe there’s changes, but they’re not going to change how poorly the borderland flowed with actual practical combat. There were too many chokes and such close quarters combat that worked against decent fights, that anyone who had a smaller group was either one pushed entirely, forced to retreat into a choke (which there was a plethora of) or there were just blatantly no fights at all. And maybe that had something to do with the decline of WvW at the time, maybe it had to do with PvE being popular at the time, or maybe people just really protested that hard against the bl. (The later of which I can definitely attest to because I’m part of a guild who preferred PvE over the bl and they had previously been a WvW guild.)
Let’s not forget the fact that it felt half finished in the first place. It had potential to be something, but without the HoT mechanics (toadstool jumping, mushrooms, and gliding) it fell really short of that potential. And I’m not insisting that any of those mechanics come into WvW because then it would break the game. But I AM saying that it would make a decent PvE map or a casual core raid map to get people into that kind of content. It’s just not a WvW map because it feels like it was never made with the intention of fighting another server and more of “let’s cap this objective because there’s nothing else to do”. Which is exactly how it turned out. As I’ve always understood this game mode, it’s about taking objectives to make the other servers mad enough to fight you. This…? This felt like impotent rage. They took something but you can’t do anything about it until they look the other way because there isn’t enough room to fight or get away from the siege the other server is humping in that tower/keep.
agreed, as a solo player, I can whoop kitten but still get wrecked cause team doesn’t know how to counter zerging…
This is it exactly. I go in unranked because I know my skills as a player are about average when it comes to pvp and I’d be completely ruined otherwise. But as a solo player, I go in hoping that the team I’m paired with and I will be at least somewhat aware of each other enough to help each other out. More often than not I come to the aid of someone only to get wrecked myself because they bail on me, leaving me to take the brunt of the attacks and usually it’s because there were 3 v 1 on the person I was trying to come help. It’s why I feel discouraged to actually be a team player and just wait it out until the next match while doing my best to stay alive.
It doesn’t help that I go in as a soloist and feel like I’m paired in a team of newbies pitted against way more experienced players, though. There needs to be some kind of account for win/loss with a pre-programmed ratio to balance matches out a bit more. If there is actually something like that, it really doesn’t feel like it works.
lopsided is a really good way to put it. I’ve been in a total of 19 matches this past month and only 1 win has come of it. That’s a HUGE loss ratio and I feel they really need to fix how ranks are pitted against each other. I’m still relatively new to the pvp part of gw2 and I feel like I’m being outranked by a good 5 ranks difference between myself and other players. It’s demoralizing and feels broken.
I have the worst feeling that because I’m moving and won’t be getting into my new house until sometime mid-july, I’m going to be screwed out of my hard earned reward.
Aah, okay. Thank you! I’ve relayed the information to her and she seems to be pretty glad for it. We’d been preparing for her to buy an NA copy in case the rumors I’d heard were true, that you needed to buy it from the region you wanted to play in. I hadn’t remembered any of this stuff from when I installed my copy months ago. But hearing this is great news!
Thank you guys again!
oh so she doesn’t have to jump through hoops to play with me? awesome! thank you
Hello! I have a question about the region lock and hope that someone can answer~
A friend of mine wants to purchase guild wars 2 so that we can play together, but she lives across the pond in the UK and I’m in in the southern US. If she were to purchase a copy of the game from a US retailer and get it shipped to her, would she still be region locked to the EU servers?
