There are times where, not only can I not read any animations on an Asuran opponent, I can’t even tell what weapon they’re using.

For me, Humans are the best for jumping puzzles though.

I’ve had 10 or 11 rares in a row with no ectos from Black Lion Salvage Kits. Is that 100% proof? Nah, but the most I’ve ever gone in a row before without ectos was 2. Something is either fishy or my Black Lion Salvage Kit is defective.

Shooting from the hip, I must say I’m VERY disappointed that a new gear tier is being added.

I don’t have any quotes saying they would never add a new gear tier, so maybe I let myself be deceived. It just seemed to me, that through the manifesto, through the creed that was continually pushed by all ANET videos and blogs that this is the type of thing that GW2 would avoid. One of the things that would make it unique in the MMO space.

The lack of power creep (until now presumably) has got to be one of my favorite aspects of GW2. As a casual player with a family and full time job it gives me the freedom to try new builds and new stat allocations in practice, (not just on a target dummy) knowing that I won’t have an insane grind to get the exotics I want. It allows me to create new characters and not dread the fact that I’ll have to grind up through several levels of gear once I hit max level.

However, I’m willing to give it a shot because I love so many core concepts of GW2. I have no idea how long it will take to get the Ascended gear either, so I’m going to give this a fair shake.

I’ve put quite a bit of thought into this as well. This is one of the major differences between DAoC and WvW. I’m always searching for root cause analysis. It’s my nature to reverse engineer everything. :P My only agenda is to make the game better. It has so much potential!

Although I haven’t given this topic much thought I tend to agree with this.

Downed is a fun and interesting mechanic. But once you’re “spiked” you should be forced to respawn. At least in WvW.

Why do people say this! This idea makes no sense! Yes let’s give everyone ribbons for participation and there is no winner or loser that completely defeats the purpose of competition, what is this kindergarten gym class?

As for the “Oh people won’t be demoralized and will want to play more” try to be realistic, if I hop into WvW and see the map is entirely controlled by one server pretty sure it’s safe to assume we are losing, and vice versa if I jump in and my server is owning everything again pretty safe to assume my server is winning, most if not all cases will be similar to this

Taking away the scoreboard makes it a powderpuff game and it still wouldn’t even fully achieve the purpose people think it will.

You lay out a very good argument, however to once again play devil’s advocate, you say that if a casual player sees this:

Server A has a score of 150,000 and has +400 / tick
Server B has a score of 60,000 and has +175 / tick
Server C has a score of 30,000 and has +120 / tick

That will generally mean he will not join (if he is server B or C) and granted you are correct in most cases that will happen. Now basically your core point has already proven what I have said:

If all it takes for a casual player to not join is seeing those numbers then what exactly is stopping said casual player from jumping into WvW opening the map to see where to go seeing 70% of the maps controlled by server A and just logging right off again.

Thanks for responding – check my last post. I actually address this. It’s a very tricky argument for me to make but I think I’ve done it as clearly as I can there. And of course we’ll never know until we try it as nothing is certain. I simply go by what I see and hear in chat channels and what some of my non hard core guildies say.

After a while I realized that I had my head in the sand. I would argue that EVERY server does this. You already see it happen. A server dominates in one bracket, moves up a couple and has the same exact thing happen to them. Nobody is above reproach. There are exceptions to the rule, but those are…exceptions. Most all of us on this forum are very competitive players and will play regardless…. But is everyone like this? Is a majority of the GW2 populace like this? Not. Even. Close.

For those who think that current map control is as big of a factor as total score I ask you to consider the following scenario:

Server A has a score of 100,000
Server B has a score of 40,000
Server C has a score of 40,000

Consider the following three Average Joe’s. If you say you don’t care what Average Joe thinks than your head is really in the sand. There aren’t enough like minded / hyper competitive players to field a presence at all times for every server. WvW success hinges on what Average Joe thinks.

Player A is from server A. He logs in and checks WvW. He sees that his team has a 60,000 point lead over B and C. He also sees that his team only controls only 10% of the map.

Player B is from server B. He logs in and checks WvW. He sees that his team is behind by 60,000 points. But he also sees that his team currently controls 60% of the map.

Player C is from server C. He logs in and checks WvW. He sees that his team is behind by 60,000 points. He also sees that his team controls 30% of the map. Three times that of Server A.

In order, which player is most likely to queue, and why?

I would argue that the answer is A,B,C, in that order. Why?

Player A knows that his team already has a 60K point lead, so help is not far away. He’s going to queue and try to help his team preserve the lead. Take back a few camps / get some karma and xp and try to keep hold of the 10% of the map until the re-inforcements he knows are coming will get there. This prevents B from completely snowballing over A.

Player B is the next most likely to queue. He sees that his team controls a large portion of the map. But he also sees that his team is already down by 60k and it’s just now Saturday night. It’s just a matter of time until Server A controls all of the map again, his current 60k deficit tells him that. So it’s a toss up for Player B. Sometimes he queues, sometimes he doesn’t.

Player C is the least likely to queue. He sees little map control (although 3 times that of Server A) and a huge deficit. He’s completely demoralized by what he sees and doesn’t even try. He closes the WvW window until next week. Hoping for a better matchup.

Server C stops showing so Server A only has to contend with Server B now. Who is already at a disadvantage. A starts snowballing over B, because C provides little to no resistance to either side. By Sunday morning A has all 3 orbs, 90% of the map and a 80k point lead. Server B and C don’t show up until next week.

The snowball is in effect. Everyone loses. This is all caused because the players let the current score, more often than not, determine whether or not they will play.

The score is not what makes people stop wuvwuving. It’s the difficulty in trying to claw your way back onto the map after one server has held it for a long time.

Full upgrades, keeps/towers full of supplies. Waypoints. Orb bonuses. And when you log on the next day, that’s what you have to try to take back. And because there’s less interest in WvW, you will generally only have 1 server pressing 1 server.

Buzz,

You are seeing the effect, not the cause. The main culprit is the score. It would be virtually impossible for one server to cap an entire map and fully upgrade everything, place tons of siege at every location if the other two servers simply provided token resistance.

Why can’t the other servers provide token resistance? Getting players to the map is the issue we’re having right now. Players see the current score, along with a map that’s nearly full of the opposing server colors and don’t even bother. This is the root of the issue. No resistance at all over a large period of time is the ONLY thing that allows max upgrades to take place across an entire map.

What if you couldn’t see the score? What if it just silently ticked in the background as a metric Anet could use to match us up? Would it really matter if you saw another server starting to take over a map? NO. You would think you still have a chance to help your server compete, because you can’t see the score. It’s a big snowball effect that’s happening and it starts at the top, with the score.

You have to remember that everything is relative to when a player logs in. If player A logs in and sees a score that shows his server is hopelessly behind he won’t even bother. Even if there are signs of a token resistance starting up.

But, what if player A logs in, can’t see the score, has no idea what’s transpired over the last 10 hours he’s been offline? I can guarantee you this player will be significantly more likely to join the cause. And if this player is much more likely to join, what’s to say that 20 of his best friends aren’t also?

When these sorts of things start to take place, I’m very confident that over time you will see that it would be virtually impossible for one server to control the entire map with max upgrades and siege.

There are other issues with WvW ofc, such as server transfers (also caused by the score) / snowballing Orb Buffs / and bugs – which Anet is hopefully hard at work fixing.

But the psychological problems the scores have on an overwhelming majority of the player base is the root cause IMHO.

No flames coming from me man. It’s ok to have opposing views. I feel that the WvW system is wonderfully designed. At the same time I feel like score completely undermines the point. As I understood the original design, it was meant for casual PvP at a large scale. Something for servers to come together and bond with.

Right now what we have is a large majority playing or not playing based on the score. (which is exactly what’s happening for both the server that’s up HUGE and the server that has no chance to “win”)

To me, that’s counter intuitive to the intended design goals. Players have allegiance to the score, and not their server. Hence the transfers. If we remove the real time scores, (but continue to rank servers based on a hidden metric) we remove the incentive to make a knee-jerk transfer. If we remove the incentive to transfer we start building communities. We start building communities and server pride starts to come into play.

Our nature is to be selfish so I don’t blame anyone for chasing the score to a winning server. Right now the system (with unlimited transfers) encourages this, in fact.

I’ll tangent just a bit here, but stick with me. I’m fine with transfers staying free actually, but ONLY if you transfer to a server that’s in a lower bracket than your current server. Transfers should not be allowed to any server in your current pairing. Transferring should mean you give up the right to play WvW for the entirety of the current match and possibly the following match. Transferring should be a decision that should not be taken lightly. Transferring for PVE reasons should be a non factor as I understand it, due to the guesting feature. Although, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

I love being the under dog so yes I think it is fun to be outnumbered or outmatched. Makes me play harder/smarter.

Joey, I think pretty much everyone on this forum is of the same mindset. The issue with WvW isn’t the players that post on this forum.

It’s the VAST majority of players that don’t come here and don’t have that mindset. The VAST majority of players simply look at the score and close the WvW window, never to open it again till next week. This is human nature guys. I’ve seen professional sports teams “mail it in” when they get down by huge margins.

We aren’t even close to talking about professionals here. We’re talking about Joe Schmo who has 2 hours to play and wants to have some fun. WvW is very fun, provided the numbers are out there for each team. We need to remove every single possible barrier to the average player wanting to come play. If we don’t the future of our beloved game mode is very much up in the air.

If Joe Schmo get’s into his BL and almost every point is taken by the other server that could be a problem. But what if Joe is joined by 20 or 30 other Joe’s who have no clue what the score is and, like our original Joe, wanted to see what was up? Now we have the beginnings of a possible group on our hands. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a commander out in the field that could do great things if he just had 10-20 players to follow him. They just weren’t there. Discouraged by the score, the Joe’s never even gave it a chance.

You’re preaching to the choir brother. I’ve played competitive sports from the time I could walk. I’m a competitor to the core. Like I said above, I’m not talking about my personal desires, I’m talking about what’s best for the game.

I fought vs Yak’s Bend when it was 695 / 0 / 0. And rallied 10 of us (Yes there were only 10 of us in the entire BL) and went on to take 3 supply camps. I have no fear, never back down and never give up, much like a majority on this board.

But we are not why I’m advocating removing the score. See what I mean?

Good points, Man.

However, I think they would play even with a majority of the map dominated by one team. As long as they cannot see that there is no hope of ever coming back to win people will play. I’ve logged in to see a map completely flipped in > 2 hours before. If one team completely controls the map they can’t hold all the points indefinitely. You just can’t. The ONLY way each point can be held by one server is if no one even attempts to join from the other two, and that’s where the score causes such a large issue.

I also think like you. I play to win and to defeat the other server. I join WvW regardless of the score. I’m not talking about guys like me and you. I’m not talking about anyone on this forum. I’m talking about the other 99% of the GW2 population. The casuals. The players who will make or break the success of WvW. We, as a WvW focused community here need to think outside the box a bit and think about what’s best for the game as a whole, not what we want for ourselves.

Unfortunately we are facing the human condition here. People want to play and have fun. People want to think they are making a difference or can make a difference. The snowballing score completely destroys this notion.

And you are right players transfer to the side with the highest score. But, they do not transfer to the side that controls the most territory at any point in time. That is very fluid. And I’m confident it would be much more fluid if no score was present. I also advocate that server transfers should come with some baggage, like no WvW for the current and next matchup ect.. but that’s for another topic altogether.

In a perfect world, where we were all like minded, yes I would advocate to keep the score. As you say, it causes certain strategies to come into play based on time remaining and score to attain. But, alas that is not our situation. And we’re finding this out one blowout at a time.

Removing the score is the lesser of the two evils, imo.

You have too narrow a view. Think bigger picture. Think cause and effect. Think snowballing. This is purely psychological.

Consider Server A,B,C

Server A has a score of 150,000 and has +400 / tick
Server B has a score of 60,000 and has +175 / tick

Think about it from the perspective of a casual player (not one of us who login regardless) from server B or C during this time. If you see the above server scores what is your motivation to join? You’re getting destroyed already so you’re not going to join. If each casual player thinks this, than NONE of them join. If there were 30 of these casual players on at this time, which is a quite modest figure, they could be the difference between forming a big enough group to tackle some of the bigger objectives and not. So the downward spiral continues.

If this casual player can’t see the score – what’s preventing him from joining? And if this one player joins what’s to say the other 30 won’t as well? Once you get all these guys in together some things can happen. Instead of a few of you standing at the spawn-in there’s many and morale starts to go up. Objectives start to get taken. The whole time we can’t see the score. All we know is that we’re fighting for our server and having a great time doing it. The downward spiral is kept in check. Even if their server is down by 100,00 points they have no clue and couldn’t care less. Out of sight, out of mind.

You see, the biggest problem with the score is psychological. It’s demoralizing to the average player. WvW goes from playing to have fun to playing to get the highest score. That’s not the intended design for any casual PvP game mode, one that requires a certain population threshold be met from each server to remain fun and interesting for all parties.

We need to remove any and all factors that prevent someone from wanting to join the fight.

The biggest problem, has, and always will be, the score. Server transfers happen because of the score. Keep the score ticking in the background but make it impossible for players to see. The score is the beginning of the snowball effect that is causing pretty much every match to be so lopsided. It’s a huge demoralizer for the casual player – and sometimes even the competitive ones.

Players that are on this forum are already, for the most part, the type of player that will ignore the score and continue to play regardless. However, 99% of the populace is not like this. Open your eyes, we need the casual players to make this thing work. They will see an insurmountable score and NOT EVEN TRY, or even worse transfer to the winning server.

I’m fine with allowing free transfers till the end of time, however you must be locked out of the current WvW match, and possibly the next. Make the decision something that cannot be taken lightly.

Score > Server Transfers > Orb Bonuses are in order – the problems plaguing WvW.

Don’t give up fellas. We (DH) are always strong on the weekends. (from the very first week) We can be had during the week and you can chip away at our lead. Don’t let the score discourage you from trying! As has already been said – this thing is far from over.

I would also add to my previous post, that if you overtake a camp / tower / keep that your reward as an attacker would also scale off the amount of time the opposition held the particular objective.

If you manage to get behind enemy lines and take a camp they’ve held for 3 days you get a bonus to your rewards. Likewise for towers / keeps ect..’

This would be similar to how they reward PVE exploration / killing mobs in remote areas.

Personally,

I’d like to see the player that placed the siege get a cut of the rewards when kills are made with them. I like to place carts and ballistae but after I place them I lead the charge into the heart of the enemy on foot. This may incent more players to purchase and place siege at defensible positions. It could be a start.

Another possible idea.

-I’m in favor of removing the score completely and letting it tick in the background (still scoring and sorting servers) and in it’s place have a karma and/or exp reward system.

-For each camp, tower, keep that you hold in the current BG everyone on your server (that’s in the current BG) will get a karma reward at every 15 minute score update.

-Have the karma reward for each encampment scale based on the amount of time you’ve held it. Starting at a very small amount once captured and scaling up as each 15 minute scoring interval goes by.

-Make this karma reward have diminishing returns at a certain number of held objectives and give each objective an award cap so it stops scaling.

By removing the score from the game you remove a critical factor that causes the average player to not join WvW, particularly once the snowball has started against them.

By giving time based karma rewards you incent players to hold objectives once captured.

However, this could be easily abused by AFK’ers and also what happens when every objective starts scaling and you hold every single one? The rewards seem like they could get out of control in a hurry.

I think a potential fix to this would be to appoint a fixed karma award value to Towers and Keeps, but allow supply camps to scale based on the time held. This in turn could turn Supply Camps into some of the best open field skirmishing we’ve yet seen. If you make them even more important than they already are from a reward standpoint I could see some epic open field clashes going down as servers desperately try to hold onto their camps.

Again, these are just ideas shooting from the hip and would require considerable examination before implemented.

As others here have suggested – Melee is very viable in WvW. For the most part I’m primarily melee on my Warrior. I run with Sword/Board and Hammer most of the time but will switch out to Greatsword. At times during sieges if I cannot grab a siege weapon I step out of combat for a half second and switch the Hammer out to the Longbow until said siege is done.

Most of the time however I try to cut off reinforcements and skirmish. I utilize a Banner build and imo it’s extremely effective. I have non stop regeneration from adrenaline and the banners (which heal others too), and each banner also has a swiftness buff that lasts about as long as the cooldown and possibly longer with the correct gear so I nearly have perma swiftness when I’m traveling.

You have to remember to spec for survival if you want to play this way. Lots of Toughness / Vit and Regen along with weapons / utilities that have active defenses.

George – that was a good post before you removed it. I’ve been on both sides of the Night capping. It never dissuaded me from entering even though we were down to +10 while the other server was at +700. But alot of players see the score and say “What’s the point?” and I can’t really argue with that.

I think the score is the biggest problem right now. Alot of players can’t ignore it and it’s a morale breaker. I think night capping is a symptom, but not the root of the issue.

If you pushed ‘B’ and all you saw were the buffs your team had and couldn’t see the score or how many potential objectives you held I think many many more would join. Not totally on topic but I also think queue times should be stated here as well. (That’s for another discussion)

The same scoring system could occur in the background all while letting us just fight it out. It’s a snowball effect you see. If you never saw the score late night players would be much more apt to get out there an play, even when nightcapping is occuring against them. You could at least put up token resistance to prevent the nightcapping server from setting up siege at your spawn. So you stand a much better chance of fighting back.

To me, Anet is up against the human condition here and that’s tough to deal with. There is no magic recipe and no Algo is going to fix it. It needs to be fixed incrementally. (Stopping server xfers would be a start!) If you try and take away as many factors as you can that allow a player to be demoralized before stepping onto the field of battle – you’re going in the right direction.

I absolutely love WvW. My favorite aspect of the game. I don’t pay attention to the score. The score has no bearing on my ability to capture or defend a point.

The only thing that matters is the next objective. Whether that’s building up defenses or helping a supply run or taking down a keep, that’s the only thing that matters.

Besides, what does “winning” really mean in this context? Your server score is relative. If one server is rated at 100 and another is rated at 10 does it mean the higher rated server is more fun? Not in the slightest. The server rated at 100 may go to a bracket where they are hopelessly outclassed for a week and the lower rated server may goto a bracket where they are far more competitive. It’s all relative.

My advice for the average player is to stop looking at the score and have some fun. There’s alot to be had out there when you band together and fight!

I will never resort to name calling or harsh words toward a server or it’s players. In fact, I’ve been very complimentary of SF and SoR in this very thread. You guys are really bringing it as a whole and my hats off to you all.

It’s blatantly obvious that the DH night crew really pisses you off. I’m fine with that. In fact, I think it’s hilarious it affects you so much. The same thing happened to DH in our match-up with Yaks. It’s easy to lose respect for a guy when he continually lumps all of us in as “insects” and “PVEr’s”. It really hurts my feelings – STOP IT!! lol…

However, we still have lots of respect for the rest of your server, (Props to SF and SoR for last week and a great start to this week so far!) because we don’t make hasty generalizations about entire servers. So please, by all means continue to post in your current passive aggressive tone, claiming that our methods (we play when we can) don’t bug you when they so obviously do. It’s quite entertaining.

Enerjak – you seem like you need a hug brah.

You surely did “smash” DH last week by 2k points. We’ll see how it ends up this week. If we get “smashed” again by 2k it will have been another good fight.

What you fail to realize is that SF really does the exact same thing to DH as we do to you. Fight us when we’re not there. DH has a much smaller presence during the weekday afternoons and up through late prime time but we are strong on weekends and at night. Won’t hear a peep from us though about it being unfair. Yak’s did night cap us pretty hard the first match-up so we tried to evolve some to compete.

We’ll continue to try and improve and organize better, and we have so far.

I logged in a couple days last week from about 8PM EST to 11PM EST and had an outmanned buff nearly the entire time in the SF Borderlands. Each time I entered we had exactly 0 camps / towers / keeps. We just don’t have the pops to fill up all 4 BG’s during those times. Didn’t stop me and the other 10 DH players from taking 3 camps and just generally harassing anything we could vs the massive forces of SF and SoR. We did everything we could to try and help our team even though we were thoroughly outgunned.

We are getting better during the prime time hours but are still (admittedly) a work in progress. I feel good about the direction we’re going and look forward to some good fights this week.

Joshiasi – that’s correct. I joined up Wed night at about 11PM EST in the SF BG and there were 10 of us. TOTAL. We were fighting against significant forces from both SF and SoR that, between them, had every point on the map. We decided that instead of trying for our tower and getting caught in between a Green and Blue sandwich that we’d instead skirmish and take some camps.

So all 10 of us banded together and at one point had 3 camps secured. They kept getting taken back but it took a decent sized force to bring us down. I tend to think we did make a difference out there, harassing supply lines and taking camps. It was all we could do.

Moral of the story, everyone plays when they can. We have a stronger night and weekend presence than we do on Weekdays. That’s just how it is right now. You notice in both matches we’ve had so far we’ve taken the lead into Sunday but relinquished it between Sunday afternoon and Monday. We are who we are at this point. Hopefully we’ll continue to get more to join us during the weeknights over time.

The DH night crew has been doing a bangup job this match and I do commend your efforts!

That’s excellent to know that some more help it on the way. To gain some more confidence I would definitely go to the “Heart of the Mists” and complete all the Siege events. Those are perfect for letting you use the weapons in a low stress environment.

While being level 80 is better than not you certainly don’t have to be. I’ve been in WvW with my Mesmer since level 10 and typically do just fine.

As far as the mumble server goes we have a 20 slot but it’s private at this point. Would have to discuss internally to see if we can open it up a bit / add some more slots.

I’m all for getting rid of the orb bonuses to help give the down servers a chance, but I just can’t justify punishing people who enjoy playing at night. I personally only have time to play at night. With school, work, and basketball practice everyday, I normally only have time to play between the hours of 10pm-2am PST, 1am-5am East Coast time. I apologize for being on Yaks bend, but I made the decision to roll on Yaks months ago and have not transferred once. I really hope Arena-Net doesn’t decide to punish me for playing at night, because I currently really enjoy playing WvW with my friends. I guess the most I can do is hope that you other servers can recruit some night players to help even it out at night, im sure overtime the game will increase in popularity and people from different timezones will help you out, and if not, hopefully Arena Net will find an adequate alternative.

DJ – no need to apologize bro. Everybody plays when they can. I think (hope) this sort of thing should be able to sort itsself out over time. If Anet decides to:

1. Allow guilds to bring over their hard earned influence when they move servers
2. Stop free transfers
3. Potentially advertise the average queue times for WvW to make lower pop servers more appealing.
4. Switch the outmanned buff with the Orb Bonus. And / Or make some change to the orb bonus to stop it from snowballing so badly.

It could be a big boon to start evening things out. I will stick with Darkhaven and will not switch servers until I’m forced too by Anet. I don’t mind losing at all I just want a competitive fight. Yak’s / AR / DH are a great fit in primetime so it’s unfortunate that it’s gone down like this.

Good luck to you guys. I am not a WvW player yet, but I am on Yak’s Bend. I just saw the stats, I know it must not be fun at the moment for you guys. :-/

It’s certainly not. The most frustrating part of it was the first night of combat we actually held a slim lead over Yak’s and AR and it was great fun for all three sides I imagine.

The issue came when we woke up the next day and Yak’s had pretty much everything under control on all three maps with gobs of siege protecting each tower / keep and a nasty 20k+ deficit.

During primetime the three servers are a great match, but off peak it’s no contest. And once one server gains all the points and get’s deeply entrenched with siege it breaks the spirit of the average player. Thusly the snowballing effect we currently see occurs.
