Today the Angels of Clarity [AOC] Guild will be running HoTs map with new and veteran players to unlock HP, MP and other content. If you are interested in unlocking your elite specs. on current, alternate or a level 80-boosted character, please join us at 7:30pm EST in our Guild Hall New. All players are welcome regardless, although glider unlock would be highly recommended. Add me for invite to join our guild for this event.

AOC runs weekly scheduled events aimed for the benefit of Fractals, WvW on SBI, Guild Missions and Map Completion. Regardless of your level of experience we aim to both train new players as well as organize dedicated runs towards your specific goals. I found myself in the same situation and returned to a lot of unknown aspects. Starting a new character helped me get back into things as well as set goals as to what I want to be working towards. If you still have your level 80 boost I would hold onto to it and use it once everything begins to comeback and as you learn new aspects of the game. I must add that I highly recommend unlocking the glider through HoTs maps as it add a lot to the game all around. This can be done through HoTs Missions and leveling up once (81) in Verdant Brink and using a Master Point (awarded through HoTs Mission/Achievements) which you will end up at after the first HoTs Mission. My guild will be running HoTs map completion if you want to join tonight for Hero Points on your Warrior as elite spec. required a large amount of Hero Points to level.

HoTs Hero Points = 10 HP
Rest of Tyria Hero Points = 1 HP

There is no right or wrong answer with it other than to not use it when first starting out on GW2 for the first time. I ended up using mine on mesmer to avoid the squishy leveling process and jump right to grouped PVE/WVW where mesmer does best. Maybe try it out on a Medium or Heavy class? Either way you will need to rack up some Hero Points to unlock the elite spec. on your new character. I noticed your post earlier regarding some map completion/unlock. There are various reasons as the why this is help and convenient listed below:

-Map completion rewards, whether for the enitre map or just one particlar area there are various rewards and lots of exp. for 100% one map and some of these rewards are only obtained through such.

-Waypoint access, having access to multiple waypoints is simply a convenience. There are many different aspects of the game spread all throughout Tyria (World Bosses, Materials, Dungeons, Mini-Dungoens, Jumping Puzzles, Guild Missions, World Events and more). Although many of these might not be desired/required now, there may be a point in time where it would be convenient for waypoint access depending on your future goals.

-Dailies, every day at 8pm (est) there are daily resets for rewards giving you multiple tasks to complete within 24 hours sending you although random places in the map. These give you rewards that a valuable over time and as well as 2gold for completion of 3 dailies.
