This guy is bringing up tennis and golf…LOL. Those aren’t sports for real men. Look at all the things Mike Tyson said in boxing, right in front of his opponent and on live T.V.

While GW2 PvP is a sport for real men who trash talk and swear and eventually end up shedding each other’s blood, right?

Starcraft 2 in the World and especially in Korea has a strict set of rules for talking to your enemies and for everything that is visible or audible to spectators of a match. The same goes for Dota as far as I know (I chose these examples, because I have been following competitive scene there for a while now, so I at least know what I’m talking about).

Most tournaments in SC2 don’t allow you to write anything but a variation of “gl hf” and “gg” during the entirety of a match. I would like to see that kind of enforced sportsmanship in GW2, but that’s me and my opinion and not everybody might like it. I’d like Anet to enforce strict rules like these at least for the events they have a say in.

Dear Michael & co.

#897878

posting on behalf of a member of my guild. I’m sorry, he posted 2 other tickets, because he was getting frustrated for not knowing what the reason for his suspension was. Thank you in advance for having a look at it.

Even sharing the reason and length of suspension would be greatly appreciated as we can build on that and see what went wrong.

We need him for the fall tournament! Just kidding Hope it’s nothing major or a misshap that will get straightened out.

If you’d need any cooperation from the guild or me, please let me know.

Thanks to both BB and AR for yesterday. It was amazing fun and we had good fights all evening. I remember our fights with CoN the most. Lucky, we had some help from friendlies. Guys, you pack a punch.

But everyone we met was willing to fight and painful to kill or get killed by. Pretty even most of the time and we had such a blast on TS trying to keep our people up and your people down. Great job again everyone on BB and AR. Thanks for the good stuff!

Also kudos to VG, EW, Necr (ninja squad) and all the Piken guilds and friendlies I’m too dumb to remember and/or name properly. You did nothing short of great job.

I want to tip my hat to all of the SFR and Elona groups we had the opportunity to fight this reset. We had a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to bumping into you again during the season.

My enemies and allies are what makes WvW fun for me. If both of them are good, it’s like Christmas for me

Why APIs return IDs

kaspi.7164

Thank you for this great write-up and clarification, Cliff. After seeing this, I’d encourage you to keep the design as clean as possible. From what I see you have it figured up very well. As to be expected from a big company

Under these circumstances, I have no problem querying multiple API endpoints and caching the data on my side.

You mentioned content servers holding the localized names of objectives etc. I think I speak for the majority of us if I say we’d like to be able to query these data too. We can build our own relation tables on our end, but I guess it’s just a matter of time until you provide a comprehensive API map and fill in the blanks with more endpoints that we can call.

As I mentioned somewhere else, I would very much love to have a “last modified” header in your response if you in any way cache your API responses. It would make it so much easier for us to handle the response (e.g. throw it away if the modif <= our cached time).

Do you by any chance have a list of errors + their codes? Would be nice to be able to write error handlers around errors that we haven’t seen so far. To get ready for when something new goes wrong.

[API Suggestion] Guilds

I like the first guild API proposition and I am perfectly ok with this being the first release. I’d like to voice the wish to release a roster endpoint for the API with the “last online” info.

@Uttar: I’ll be the killjoy of the party and say that imo Anet already pushed it a bit far with showing the claiming guild id in the API. If you look at the map in-game, you can only see some upgrades (waypoints, merchants…), which team has it, if it’s contested.

The more info we get in API, the less scouting is needed and the servers that sucked at scouting will get an easy way to get all the information they need. I feel that proper offensive and defensive scouting is an integral part of warfare (WvW) and therefore a significant part of the skill-set of the armies.

It’s further dumbing down the game. A common trend in gaming nowadays

Yes, I don’t like swag claimers who want to show of their emblem. Yes, I would like a way to contact them, but in the UI. Make it e.g. a conversation option with the lord/supervisor.

API Development Plans

The TP API with buy/sell functionality would have to be implemented and given/sold by ArenaNet as nobody in their right state of mind should trust a 3rd party with something like that (and Anet would never give control over such a significant thing to the masses). The most we could get out of this would be a “view” function to see your buy/sell orders and search the TP.

It seems like a great way to monetize GW2 a bit more. Paying some small sum to be able to trade 24/7? It’s a no-brainer for traders.

Is this API allowed?

in API Development

kaspi.7164

AFAIK it is a separate program that does not modify Guild Wars in any way. It doesn’t modify game files, processes, nothing.

Imagine you have a web browser open and you open a calculator and place it over the window. That is what an overlay does. It is an independent program that just positions itself over some other application window.

Wait for a second opinion on this, but I’m pretty sure I got it right.

You would be surprised. Last online can also cause issues.

What Issues would that possibly be other than a fast and accurate way to filter out inactive people in the guild?

Some say. The flip side of that is that login requirements would made for guild members. A lot of people do not like this mostly a lot of GW1 players did not like to see it re-appear in GW2 and there is little need as there is a high guild cap. But then again perhaps the high Guild Cap will make it so that less guilds have a activity requirement. There is another thread about people requesting for this and you will see the controversy on that.

I’ll derail this a bit further. This is a matter of the guild, their rules and I don’t see any reason why ArenaNet should force me with their UI design into having inactive people on my roster if I don’t want them there.

Sure, they already try to force some things via their design choices, but I don’t like devs forcing me to play the way they want me to play their game by throwing hurdles under my feet as I run.

What’s happening is that the leaders who do want actives are now keeping tabs on members with “pen and paper” instead of a simple UI feature.

Now back on track: if they have the data and plan to update the game UI at some point, I don’t see why the data couldn’t make it to the API first. The API dev cycle is different thing and I’d say much easier as you just need to pull the data from the database and don’t need to worry about graphics, testing etc.

It would be also interesting to be able to get the roster data including race, profession, known crafting disciplines…

Example: Our forums implement a plugin that is based on Anet Guild API. I need some advice from a guardian. I look up lvl 80 guardians and PM them on the forum with links to builds etc. to get their opinion. Convenient? Very!

[API suggestion] General

in API Development

I noticed there is no general suggestion thread. It would be nice to have a place where we could suggest modifications to the API and features for the API as a whole. And here is the first one already:

Presuming that a lot of the API data is cached on ArenaNet’s side (as there is a definite number of parameters and their values) and the results are not generated for every request individually, I would love to have a “last modified” header in the response.

This would let us skip the checks for data changes and let us cache on our side more effectively.

This would enable us to check for changes in server list and start up an extensive database update routines after content patches or other additions.

@Cruzyo: Yes, but you need to log into the game, go to the keep and have a look for yourself. Or you have to send out scouts to tell you. It requires some effort on the player side.

I’ll use an absurd example: The next step would be providing the locations of enemy siege. You can see it too, if you pass by.

I think this particular API is good as it is. Could use improvement on the naming part and the related APIs (guilds). Also the API as a whole could use a “last modified” header…

Upgrade status on objectives would be awesome. Just the readily visible ones: wall, door and waypoint upgrades. Nothing that you can’t see from the map or from running by.

You can’t see the upgrade status from the map on enemy objectives except for the waypoint. Which is why the API probably won’t include that information. It’s what Anet is having their eyes on and what they mentioned on multiple occasions – they don’t want the API to provide an unfair advantage.

“If you want to see the upgrades on towers or where enemies have arrow carts, go code it yourself” is imo basically what they’re saying.

Even the new MOS feature with Righteous Indignation is pushing it and it’s a simple diff between two status changes for an objective. Accuracy depends on how frequently you call the API to get updates, but 5-10 seconds would be precise enough.

Rate limiting and API keys

in API Development

Posted by: kaspi.7164

kaspi.7164

Yes, it seems silly, but they might just want to see how big of a hit is the API going to be for their infrastructure. They are probably just gathering intel of how much data per second the community wants to get.

My bet is we’ll see some limits very soon, also owing of the people who are not careful with their coding. In fact, I would like to see some limits for this very reason asap.

My plan was getting WvW updates somewhere in the interval of 5 to 30s. From what I see, MOS updates their live map every 30s, but the log shows different increments for actions than 30s, which points towards more frequent API calls.

Do I read it correctly as “we don’t have api limits that you can break if you don’t specifically try to DoS us”? Would that mean that if I ran a script checking event states 24/7 each 30s I will not hit an API limit for the time being?

I guess you already have some API limitations mechanisms ready. How will the endpoint behave if we reach the limit? Request time out?

It would be nice if we’d be able to scale the frequency of our requests depending on the endpoint load.

Official Response: Drop Rate of Legendary Precursors

in Crafting

Look at it from the point of view of in-game economy for a while. This whole legendary business is a huge gold sink. Let’s imagine for a while you (when I say you, I mean anyone) and your full magic find set went on this farming spree and sold everything to vendors or on Trading Post instead of scrapping 1/4 of your rare+ items in Mystic Forge (note: vendors is the important part as on TP the gold only changes ownership).

How much gold didn’t enter the system or change owners? If people could throw around 100s of gold like it was nothing, we could be seeing pretty nice inflation. That would make it even harder to buy a precursor on TP.

I was able to make 3 gold yesterday just by having fun. Only guild MF was active, I think. Played some www, did orichalcum runs, dragon here and there, Plinx for a bit, did 3 explorable runs of Ascalonian Catacombs. I had a nice day. A hundred more days like that and I could buy Dusk on TP. If I could be bothered to farm lodestones, sell ectoplasm, spin the market a bit and do other money-making activities, I can imagine making 8 gold a day easily.

Depending on how much time a day/week/month you can and wish to invest into it. We can all get there eventually. The difference is in how we decide to get there.

I want to craft a legendary eventually and have no problem with RNG. My vote would be against set recipes and introducing more options. Magic find working on Mystic Forge would be ridiculous as well as higher world drop rate (with all the dragon and event farming already going on).

this is probably myself at fault, but too often i find myself getting downed when i try to revive others. one thing i try to keep in mind is i try to revive everyone – as long as they are safe…

I’m playing GS / scepter+focus with 0/0/30/30/10 with all out support skills for regen etc. I have zero utility to protect myself while reviving. And that is why I don’t do it. I am there to soak the damage, pull all things in a neat train behind me, heal, regen, aegis and give someone a chance to revive others.

That is how I started to play my support. My build and playstyle are helping them stay alive much longer than they would on their own and if someone fails or gets unlucky, there are 3 other people to help him. I have my hands pretty full most of the time…when I don’t I can res, sure.

[WIP] support/survival PvE (with focus on dungeons)

I am playing my guardian as a support from the very start. This is my silly build and I plan to gain a government grant to help me further develop it.

The build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUEQNArdRlYgKCnFyvDm4ESWBDE7BG9Rb01jEyhYIA;T4AZTCmkMpaSxElXGvEeZ9y5l0r1GjNmbA

Please help me with ideas and things that worked for you or didn’t work at all. Point me to some interesting trait/skill/weapon combinations as well as rune options. It will be much appreciated.

Goal:

  • survivability
  • boons, regeneration and healing for allies
  • boons, regeneration and healing for me

TBD:

  • further develop trait/weapon/skill set for various scenarios
  • tweak out odd traits (e.g. trying out 0/10/30/20/10 and other changes) and runes

Playstyle:

Weapon options:

  • switch focus and shield based on scenario (if the situation calls for it, mainly for the shield’s 5th skill)
  • focus/mace depending on the ability to stay close to the enemy and number of melee (support with mace symbol)
  • staff mostly for Line of Warding

Trait options:

  • 20 % two-handed recharge rate
  • ground targeting for consecration
  • various changes depending on difficulty (easy? toughness to precision, etc.)

Skill options:

Comments:
So far I have been amazed by how much pounding can the guardian take. I can even survive some chain stuns/kicks with aegis, shout and pull through poison-bleed combination thanks to the 2x 10s condition removal.

I can jump into the fray and get in huge initial damage with leap -> wrath -> justice -> whirl and survive the anger of the NPCs. Roll out with a dodge, get regeneration, heal more if needed while providing regeneration and healing for others by doing this. Now most of the NPCs hate me so much that our party should be ok.

It’s not a big deal, but when doing Twilight Arbor story mode yesterday, I was able to kite and survive Rytlock and Logan with scepter/shield and it felt really good. Staff/scepter works really nice if you need to get in damage while staying on the move.

I’m really looking forward to acquiring some nice exotics and tweaking my build.
