I am very disappointed in my choice of elite skills. I have 3 golems, only one of which has come in handy so far(offensive golem does about 9k damage with the channel attack). The offensive tome does less damage than my normal weapons do, and the support tome sometimes comes in handy, but by the time I use it, especially in pvp, I’m probably already downed by that point.kittenthieves. I don’t have the mistfire wolf so I can’t comment on that one. The renewed focus seems to be the best so far because it makes me invulnerable. I wish it wasn’t a channel though, because players and even mobs will just wait until the channel is over and proceed to hitting me again.

I do fine in WvW. I use scepter/focus and that gives me a little bit of a range, but the 2, combined with 3 destroys. The blind and 5 for the extra 3 nukes if I need to get away helps a little bit too. I stack tough/vit, and while my gear blows because I’m still working on getting 80 exotic gear, I think my 19k does just fine. If I notice I’m getting pelted for more than 2k a shot, I run. 1v1, I can kill just about anyone. Especially when they see that it’s just a guardian alone, but the shielding, blind, immobilize, and ability to make my immobilize also cause vulnerability helps. And then I swap to my hammer and cause even more havoc. But it’s a stupid assumption to think that any class will do well against 2v1 or more than 2. Toughness doesn’t seem to do crap in this game except mitigate a whole..what..5% of damage? I’m sitting at almost 2.5k armor and it’s just going to go up and mobs and players constantly hit me for pretty high, but it doesn’t stop me from being a pansy and running away unless I know I can kill one, then get away.
WvW..gotta fight like wolves do. In and out and in and out. Get the kill, run away. Unless you’re part of a zerg..and then..well..gung ho! What’s the worst that happens anyways? You pay 2s for repairs.

A shinier star would be wonderful!

What is the current benefit for having more than one character having 100% map completion? Excluding the reward for legendary items you get from getting the 100% completion. I’m only at 91% on one character, and still a solid month, give or take, before I can craft a legendary item. Does the character select token upgrade when it’s been completed by multiple characters? Can I use “Been There, Done That” title on alts?

That I do. Or simple mistakes that gets me killed. More along the 10 line than the 20 line. For instance, if you run to where the 2 champs in Path 3 Arah are before actually making it to the path select in Arah, all of the normal mobs + the 2 or 3 silvers will casually walk toward you, eventually running into you and wiping the floor. Stuff like that. I also run full dungeons, not parts or shard runs. The legendary mobs DO hit hard, after all.

I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be this way, but leaps and teleports break knockdown. I play a guardian, and one of my support abilities is the ability to teleport and burn nearby foes. In a knockdown state, I can hit that, and be back up instantly and send out a burn AoE..It’s mainly used for the teleport of course. I’m not sure what other classes have, because I only play a guardian. My dash, when using a sword, breaks immobilization and knockdown. Like someone else stated. Look through your support abilities. At least one will say “breaks stun”..however, it seems that monsters don’t get DR on us like we get on them when boulder-spamming, etc.

I think with this great news, I am going to ask for a mile an a quarter, after the foot of good news you’ve given, Jon. Could you please increase the amount of money we receive for each chest? At the moment, because we’re choosing paths we’re comfortable with and have achieved a good semblance of coordination, I’m at about a 1:1 ratio for money:repair cost at the end. I’d like a 1.5/2:1 ratio is possible. Thanks!

I enjoy reading the comments by some of the people trying to be hard saying “it’s a pvp zoen. Go away if u dont liek pvp carebear!”. I am one of the people that sits atop those areas that griefs after completing the puzzles if it’s possible. Either by blocking progress in PvE areas by standing on the edge so someone is going to have to figure out a way to jump around me, or with a few friends preventing progress in the PvP puzzles. I know some of you that are victims of my fun times are those raging “hardcore” pvp people, and that makes me smile.
Achievements for the jump puzzles are great to have, but I don’t believe they are required for 100% map completion. I’m sitting at 91% map completion, and, besides that bugged SP in Malchor’s Leap, it’s all WvW vistas and pois. I have yet to do EB though. I’m still working on slowly getting all of the areas in my own battleground at the moment.
As a suggestion, and it’s already been mentioned, I would come back later. I can’t speak for all of the people that decide that it’s fun to impede progress on purely for-fun activities, but for me and my buddies, we get bored if no one’s coming along. We don’t use siege weapons that are out of sight or anything, but constant harassment to keep you in combat from up above, or knocking/fearing off the edges when you’re about to complete is enough for us. If no one comes along, we go find something else to do, like grief the vistas. And if that fails, there’s always actually helping to cap objectives.
I don’t see how they can restrict sieges in the jump puzzles, and I do see it often. I take my own advice when I see others from an enemy realm doing that. Being that sieges are restricted for use for 4 days after a new matchup..or maybe it’s 5..Those are the best time to get the PvE stuff out of the way. Strip the gear, and go run around and explore! Who cares if you get ganked? Waypoint up and do it again.
Don’t forget. The game is meant to be fun. If you find yourself getting frustrated by people like me, then take a break for a bit. GW2 isn’t going anywhere. No need to rush all of this crap anyways.

That random developer is the one that made the dungeon. :P
Cat V – Necromancer of Blackgate
I ran this dungeon this morning with some of my friends in guild while on skype. We did have some serious issues with the extinguisher run and the kite/kill event, but otherwise, it was fine for us. Pretty much every dungeon I do, I expect to drop about 20 silver in repairs due to the difficulty or needing to adjust tactics after a wipe and new tactic doesn’t pan out. I ran this path once before the buff and once after, all with the same group. It is noticeably harder, but I feel these things should be hard and require a large amount of time having to spend on working out kinks in your own group as well as general strategies posted online and how you execute them. That being said, I’m not one of those OMG I NEED EXOTICS people. I like taking my time and set aside a good portion of time when we decide to run a dungeon in E-mode. Here’s some of the personal observations.
Personally, I feel that adding 100 seconds to the already-tough gate event was probably a poor choice because it does really make us struggle to keep team cohesion even fighting 4 elites and one slip and someone dies, which can cause a pretty nasty chain reaction if we have to run over and rez that person without any breathing room..i.e. the room keeps spawning during the event.
I think there may be something generally off with the fire statistic. I’ve noticed that the AoE ground, whether it’s the things I need to extinguish in CoF, or even just a normal Ember mob’s AoE, to the infamous fire elemental in Metrica, it just wrecks me if I take a tick of it(not killing, but it friggen hurts bad), and it does the same to Magg in this case.
I really appreciate the insight you gave us into your perspective of why you made X change and what you did to it. That being said, I feel that this change was needed as any time people find an easy win to exotics without much work needs investigating. However, I feel that the amount of time spent in dungeons does not yield the reward necessary to make my 2 hours -/+ worth it. The money is miniscule in all dungeons, and the token amount is a tad too high for what you get each run added into the time it takes to formulate a solid strategy to complete it with the least amount of stress from dying over and over.
I think that’s about all I have for now. I would definitely enjoy seeing more perspective on some of the backend things you guys change to attempt to balance out the reward system and why you guys make changes to something you feel is too easy. It can of course be argued, but it gives the second side of the coin so to speak.

Very nice videos. Wonderful insight on how a thief plays and how a good thief orders his abilities. Thank you!

The problem isn’t whether it’s copying some game or not. Nearly every MMO can be compared to one of it’s predecessor MMO’s in one aspect or another. WoW just happens to be where a large majority of players came from and it’s still testing the waters, comparing one like to another.

I am a solo leveling guardian that’s been roaming the world in search of shiny objects and things to destroy. My current setup is Scepter/Focus and Sword/Shield. My ability stack is Vit/Toughness for survivability, with traits into survivability and power, and condition damage to help with sword burn. I’m finding that I have a little bit better luck facing multiple mobs with a scepter and focus, using my 2 ability along with my auto-cast 1. When it comes to vet mobs, I’m using my sword and board for more survivability for their harder hitting attacks.
I’m at work, so I can’t log in and tell you exactly what my build, stats, etc are. I’m level 71 though, and it honestly doesn’t matter where I go. I rarely go down unless I clearly bite off more than I can chew. A Bloodlust rune in both the sword and scepter also helps add that extra ummph needed to push over mobs to oblivion.
Keep an eye on what the monster does. Bleeds, poisons, burning, etc is a joke to me and I’ll shrug it off, but any type of CC ability, I keep an eye on because knocking me down, back can drastically change my situation for the worse. For my utility, it’s kind of up for grabs, but my 7 and 8 are a meditation fire/port and a consecration fire. Immobilization is also no problem to me because the teleport from the meditation ability breaks immobilize.
I’m on Blackgate. I’m not sure if you’re able to send tells to someone else, but I’m always willing to provide some tips based on experience. My guards name is Freshfruit.

I’m not quite 80 yet, but I’m taking my time going short and sweet and doing more world exploration rather than event farming, story progression, dungeons, etc. I would definitely like to see a progression-type dungeon tier. Almost how you need to complete Story mode to get into Explorer mode, but one a little more advanced for the 80’s that offer an even tougher challenge than Explorer mode parts can offer. Something akin to maybe a 5 person raid, or a lockout timer from doing that portion if you fail X times, etc. Or maybe a quest that starts outside the dungeons, then takes you through each of them, offering a one-time unique reward. Something like that. At the moment, I still can’t complain because I haven’t hit that tier yet, and haven’t seen how rough 80 Explorer mode can be.
Cat V – Necromancer of Blackgate
I feel the dungeons are just right at the moment. They’re meant to be hard and require coordination. While I did see one person’s post saying there wasn’t enough utility to keep someone alive if a mob is focusing them, you also need to communicate that with your group and do your best to stay alive if your group is bursting down another mob in the pack. There’s maybe one complaint I’ve had so far being level 71 and running both explorer and story for each of the dungeons up to my bracket. AC Explorer, except the second path, requires a LOT of communication and is not really made for non-voice communication or PUGs.
Some of the helpful tips I can part with. which are based on my own experiences as a 2 foot tall slab of beef are:
1) Dodge/roll often, especially when you find yourself stuck in a ranged AoE. Always be prepared to doubletap that WSAD.
2) There isn’t much ability to single pull/split pull in this game with the mobs that group together, so coordinate with your team which you will burst down. If you don’t have a lot of toughness and are getting 2 shotted or 3 shotted by silver mobs and you get focused, run it around or line-of-sight it if possible while your team burns the others down.
3) #1 first. While it sounds a bit greedy, this means that you look out for yourself first. If you’re gonna die going back to rez that guy that died in the spike trap or flame spit, tell him/her to run back and try again. If you’re being focused down by more than one monster and you’re going down too quickly, dodge away and start kiting and using utility abilities to save yourself.
4) Don’t lose focus. Tunnel-visioning to burn down a mob while another wipes the floor with your team mates in the back that didn’t pay attention to any of the above tips is no good. I have yet to really see if these mobs have an agro-table, but I did find that popping a mob once or twice, if no one is focusing them, tends to make them pretty angry with you instead of that squishy necromancer in the back.
5) Legendary mobs(the purple ones) are known for using devastating abilities that can one shot people. Learn the mechanics if you can. If you see that ghostly king raise his sword and it looks like he’s charging his laser, then it might be a good idea to not go near him.
These are some pretty basic common sense things, but the days of face-rolling dungeons are pretty much over. Even when I go in AC, with my gear and abilities, I still get stomped if I make a mistake by that Cave Troll that likes to pop out of the wall. If you can minimize your mistakes and focus on a slow-and-steady approach, you’re on the road to a much higher success chance at completing.
