For another example, look at all the Modern stories about Space Marines and galactic warfare….then go read ‘Mobile Suit Starhammercraft Effect 40K : Combat Evolved’….er, wait, I mean Starship Troopers!

All Modern interpretations of Elves and Dwarves are influenced by Tolkien’s stories in some way, which also indirectly affected almost every aspect of the Dwarves from this game. Its inescapable.

What…?

In what way does Heinlein’s love letter to militant facism have anything to do with japanese gundams, starcraft, warhammer 40k, or halo? I mean, yes, starship troopers DID have people fighting in space with guns, but kitten, so did Buck Rogers and kitten. If you try to draw parallels between Starship Trooper’s MIs and any of those named franchises you’re gonna come up preeeeetty blank outside of the barest of comparisons. That is, that starcraft is mostly a rip off of 40k, which is about gene-forged transhumans with a religious devotion to an immortal human, halo is about gene-forged transhumans with..a…almost…uh, religious devotion to protecting mankind…

Huh. Sort of like they’re all based off of 40k, actually. In some way. Not based off of the sad sacks of facism that were the MIs in Starship Troopers. I know, I know, everyone just loves to claim Starship Troopers was the advent of all things space and sci-fi, but really, it wasn’t. Not when you break it down.

Also if you want to compare any kind of modern fantasy representations of elves/dwarves to Tolkein’s…I’d strongly suggest paying more attention to your original source materiel. There’s pretty much no resemblance physiologically, sociologically, or practically between Tolkein’s elves and modern elves, and even with the dwarves it’s kind of a stretch. If anything, I’d trace both main lines of modern sci-fi and fantasy depiction to Warhammer, hands down.

I surely hope we get Trahearne back. We’re good pals, him and I, and I miss clobbering stuff with kitten swords together.

Theory: "Key Farm" getting nerfed

I’m not sure it will get nerfed, Anet has been asked multiple times if the farming, and by connection, the method of blitz farming is ‘working as intended’ and basically the answer was always “YUP”

Well, I would not mind if they hit that.

I will never like anything that is profitable though continuous mindless repetition.

Uh, have you played this game? That’s like…at least seventy percent of the content.

Fear not, your bloobs are safe.

Still not going to buy it until the blue becomes a dye-channel, even if it’s a limited channel. Because I want to be smoky black and ethereal looking like a shade

Hey brah, they work hard, and they need money. It’s either cash-shop or monthly fee. Pick one.

I’d rather pay a monthly fee. It costs less in the long run.

in one year it costs $170 to keep your monthly fee up, that’s allot less then maybe 50 bucks of gems…..

50 dollars in gems is 4k gems. That’s ~4 outfits. Which can only be used. On one character. And if you want to change your outfit, that’s going to be additional gems to split the skin from stats, and then apply a new one. And so on. And already that’s 1/3 of the cost for a year.

Yeah, I’d be ok with a monthly fee if it meant better cosmetics in a game that bases its entire endgame around acquiring cosmetics.

I very much doubt you’d get these designs for free if there was a monthly fee – looking at the payment models in other MMOs, you have both a monthly fee AND a cash shop – which, more often then not, not only sells fancy seasonal gear-stuff, but also makes that stuff last for a limited time only.
So what is the problem with the GW2 gemshop again?
(Taking into consideration that I’d very much appreciate an ‘unlock’ instead of ‘buy once’ option for armor.)

That for the price of a full DLC for a game, you can get a single use cosmetic outfit. And that the only new cosmetic sets since the game released are locked behind that paywall. And that GW2 was touted as a game with a focus on cosmetics as your endgame instead of stat grinding. Yet here we are a year and a half later with not a whit of any new attainable sets in game. Also because GW1 seemed to manage just fine with account wide unlocks, and somehow, Anet has not yet gone bankrupt.

I believe they are making a good deal more now
Also, you CAN still get everything on the gemstore for gold instead of gems – allowing you to pay with either money or time. Ans it’s not as if there weren’t a good number of skins in the game – it’s probably just our bad luck if we don’t like them.
Also, DLC prices vary – not exactly a perfect comparison.
Still – my main argument was that a monthly fee likely wouldn’t change anything about the gemstore, and I stand by that.

I WOULD like account wide unlocks myself. But I can also see why we don’t get them…
on the bright side, Anet is still hiring and apparently providing a pretty nice workplace, so at least these soulbound outfits are still creating jobs.

Just what is it you see that explains why cosmetics are not account wide, infinite reuse unlocks? Because the only thing I care about is that GW1 operated on this system for what, seven years? And is still operating on it. And somehow, Anet hasn’t gone under, or gone bankrupt, and has even had enough to make a sequel game! Crazy!

[Suggestions] Gemstore Items

I want a gemstore purchase that toggles the game to ‘play the game’ reward mode, where you get new armor and weapon skins for actually playing the game.

if you want challenge, you can grind crap from boars in queensdale. kill 10000 boars, sell loot and buy it.

I’m guessing that’s sarcasm, and definitely hoping it is. It’s really concerning to hear the people that chime in saying “well if you want it via gameplay then go farm the same dungeon routes that everyone knows by heart or zerg a champ train”. Is that all GW2 is going to end up as? All new content is purchased by mindless farming?

I really don’t get why everyone cries about the gem store. They do have to make money to keep the game going. If you want it trade your hard earned gold in for gems and purchase it. Your wallet isn’t out any money that way. The way I see it is I can pay to play aka WoW and get nothing for my money other than the priviledge to play the game I had to buy in the first place. Or.. Choose, or not choose, to buy gem cards. If I purchased $15 of gem cards every month I would be getting a lot more for my money than the priviledge to play the game I purchased. In either cases you are supporting their business. I choose guild wars game model.

This is a specious argument, as many other FTP games with cosmetics don’t use this model at all. I’d challenge anyone to find a FTP or pay once game that hasn’t released a single new armor/weapon set since release. People like to say this everytime someone complains about the only new armor and weapon sets added to the game since RELEASE being locked behind gems, saying ‘oh anet needs money since it’s a pay once game’. This is wrong. This is entirely wrong and provably wrong that a FTP (or pay once) game can sustain itself just fine on some premium armors, coupled with actually developing armor/weapon sets that are obtainable ingame as rewards for actually playing the kittening game you purchased

And please, before you list the random one-off gauntlets or helmets, those are not armor sets, people.

I am seriously teetering on the edge of peace-ing out entirely in GW2, and this shoves the balance heavily in favor of doing so.

As a caveat, I’m not a GW1 player or someone caught up in all the nostalgia or whatever. My beef comes purely as a player of an mmo. Once again, an update introduces a new set of skins that has no bearing on where our character is in the game and is not rewarding in the least. I got into GW2 under the impression from media and advertisements that it was not a vertically built MMO, and that the end-game point of this game was to customize your character and make yourself unique with skins and variations of the gear you have.

Yeah, I’m not seeing any of this. I hid the ‘endgame’ ages ago, and there is literally nothing like that. There is no new content or options for people that actually rewards playing the game. Its either pay out of pocket or pay with gold you can make by sitting statically in front of a trading post for a couple hours.

What the actual kitten? Why am I even playing this game? There’s what, two skins in this update that are actually gainable from playing the game, scarlett’s rifle and helmet? That’s it?? What bloody reward or incentive is there for sticking around and playing the game, what challenge is there, what real engaging gameplay is there that will give me a satisfying reward for my character? From last patch, there was again, two items? People say Guild Wars 2 isn’t pay to win because you can’t buy stats, but when the game is built around skins and that kind of progression as a measure of ‘success’ this is literally a pay to win model, even if it’s not the traditionally imagined kind.

And I put ‘success’ in quotes because there is no success entailed in any of these skins, only pocket money or playing the TP for a little bit. And no, I’m not poor, or whinging because I can’t afford it with $$ or gold. I easily can, but there’s a snowball’s chance in hell I’d waste it on something so massively unfulfilling.

I’m definitely feeling what the OP is proposing. See, I came to GW2 after it sat on my shelf collecting dust for a few months, because I was heavily invested in Lord of the Rings Online. After the last expansion and assorted nonsense that isn’t on-topic, I started GW2 finally and am loving it. BUT, and this is a big but (phrasing), the cosmetics in this game, comparatively, is absolutely abysmal.

See, LOTRO had a system where you could buy cosmetics off of their in game cash store, which I should note did not operate with any sort of ingame currency -> premium currency exchange, you literally had to buy the premium currency with real money, or get tiny increments of it via ingame achievements that were incredibly impractical for accumulating large amounts.

So basically, all cosmetics were purchased with real dollars. But they were all of them, to the last, reusable on every character you owned. All you had to do was drop them into your wardrobe slots (which also had to be purchased, in increments! because a basic F2P player had no wardrobe slots) and boom. Any character can now apply the skins. Which meant that I bought probably more than I’d like to admit, because I loved having all different armor sets to mix and match on different characters and never worry about oh, well, let me go split this skin from an armor and then transmute it onto another armor and then trade it to another character and then split it again and then transmute again. Hell no. It was quick, easy buy, easy apply, and oh-so-satisfying.

There’s a bunch of armors I’d rather like to buy in GW that I think would look great. But I’m not spending a single cent on anything that isn’t account bound. If I’m dropping twenty dollars, I’m kitten well going to make sure I get my money’s worth. Especially in a pay-once game.
