Piercing Arrow + Quick Draw =?

It’s nice to see SotH getting bumped to 25%. Thanks for that Jon.

Well, here’s another quick fix suggestion that’s in the same vein which helps to bump the ranger back on equal footing with other classes.

Combine Piercing Arrow and Quick Draw into one trait so it’s the same as Crackshot on the Warrior. This is no different than SotH. If you guys are happy with Crackshot the way it is which gives piercing and 20% faster cool down in one trait, then logic dictates that an equivalent trait on the ranger won’t be unbalanced.

Any chance of this happening?

"Challenging" PvE Content vs Ranger Mechanics

Aridia.3042

My biggest problem is that it seems to be a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing at Anet.

It’s like the team is not even looking at the class mechanic before designing content that’s plain broken. Aetherblade mid boss is like that. I thought the proper way to get through that lazer wall was to jump ontop of the crate, pet swap it ontop, jump off and then swap him down, but no, that fight you were not meant to have a pet that’s alive. And now Liadri is the same.

You can’t be telling your players your pet is an extension of your toon and you’re required to use it and at the same time release content that’s not even really doable without ignoring the pet entirely. That’s just bad design.

Either give people option like perma stow, and/or fix the pet, or don’t release broken content like that.

Ranger changes look cool, but I still miss 1 very important thing: Longbow users have to choose 2 of 3 Marksman traits (Piercing Arrows, Eagle EyE, Remorseless). No other weapon has such problem – when you want to spec fully into weapon, you always can pick all related traits. I think it’s REALLY needed to either merge 2 of those traits, or move one of them to 1 tier so we can pick them all.

They need to put in a ranger crack shot and merge piercing with cool down.

It’s far too many traits required to max out LB.

I’ve been say this since beta…

Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

Aridia.3042

Exactly. Can we have atleast a proper response? Since asking for a fix might be to much trouble, can we get atleast a proper feedback telling us wether it was indeed a nerf that was not mentioned on patch notes, that it was intentional or not, that the effect on QZ was intentional or not, that it will be changed or something ?

It’s very evident that they’re not playing their own game No surprise there, seen that before in other devs.

I think they probably have some kind of algorithm and they’re looking at some numbers from that to determine the DPS per minute of certain classes and that’s why the SB got flagged because it’s consistently pumping out steady numbers very quickly.

But DPS is not a good measurement when looked at in isolation. I played L2 for years and there were 3 archer races in that game: Dark Elf, Light Elf, Human. Dark Elf hits the hardest but fires the slowest but can literally 2 shot someone; Light Elf hits the weakest but fires the fastest and actually has the best DPS because of how fast and constantly they’d crit, even if the crits were like bug bites. Humans were in between.

And guess what? The same thing happened, Light Elf got the nerf bat and no one really plays it for PVP while the Dark Elf is still the archer of choice after close to 8 years because PVP is all about spike damage. Delivering a 9k hit in a single payload is always superior to hitting for 9k from 10 or 15 arrows since you can’t out heal or out pot a spike. We got the same thing now in this game. Killshot for 11k or Backstab for 15k? That’s fine under the radar because you can’t do it constantly. But pumping out consistent numbers for too long and boost your DPS per minute that’s overrated outside of PVE? Nerf longbow and short bow! Overpowered!

Of course, this kind of balance makes sense if you just drink the koolaid and if you just trust your algo and don’t even play the game…

While we are digging up dev posts, someone should find the one they made after they nerfed Sb range that described how they didn’t want us just spamming 111111111 to deal damage. Because we are the "sustained damage’ dealers of the game…

Actually, he said, spamming 1 was not fun. LOL. JP’s answer is even more hilarious and ironic given the design philosophy provided in this thread.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Ranger-SB-Nerf-Not-40-milliseconds/page/8#post398770

Took a couple of days to get debugging in on this. It is in fact a 40ms difference which equates to about 7% less damage when spamming 1. We made this change because it was creating some animation bugs to leave it where it was. It was also encouraging just spamming 1 which isn’t the most fun gameplay. If our data shows shortly that shortbow is now not effective we can certainly address that, but would do so by improving other skills on that weapon rather than by reintroducing the spam on 1 and the bugs that it was creating.

But its just that, he only ‘plays’ a ranger (cough PR cough) and actually isn’t on the balance team or anything and has no say in the balances that get put out and he even has said this himself. It’s nice he’s chatting with us and all, but if I want someone to talk that agrees that rangers needs to be fixed and nothing more then I’ll just talk to 90% of the other people in the ranger forums.

It’s purely PR and nothing else, as soon as they see a dev responding they fall in love with him , but people need to understand politics and that the fact remains, kitten hasn’t been done to the class REGARDLESS of the countless dev posts made by both Jon and Robert. So you can love him because he gives you a post reply every other day, but what comes of it , and what HAS come of it? Nothing.

Don’t shoot the messenger.

To us, this is just a game; to him, it’s the man’s livelihood. You can’t expect someone to start kitten up with his coworkers no matter how dim witted their actions might seem since he has to face and work with them on a daily basis.

I think he came and answered us in good faith. We can’t really ask for more as it’s really out of his hands.

6) Pet class that harms pets, contradicting by design

I want to touch on this point. You routinely read on the forums that pets account for X% of the ranger damage. Some even like to exaggerate the number to 50%. I don’t know what the actual percentage is, all I know is, it’s a fact that rangers have lower weapon coefficient vs other classes, so it’s reasonable to assume the way the weapon damage is balanced, pet damage is being taken into account.

In light of this, why is there pet down time at all?

The penalty for ineffective use of pets by not swapping should not be dps loss via pet down time but it should be the player not being able to use the pet of his or her choice. Rangers should have multiple pairs of pets to swap on the fly (e.g. Wolf + Spider; Bear + Drake; Eagle + Boar etc.) to ensure 100% pet up time.

So instead of being pet less for a minute, you should be able to swap into another pair of pets, the penalty being you don’t get to use the pet utility of your choice when they’re down.

This could also play into traiting in BM, like the way eles trait into Arcana, the cool down for the pair swap back to the one with the wounded pet would be lower the deeper you trait into BM.

F1 = toggle for attack/retreat
F2 = pet utility, same as currently
F3 = cycles through pet pairs.
F4 = swap pets within the pair, same as currently

Second issue is the pet buffs. We know pet damage is being taken into account as part of the total damage, so they’re expected to attack.

If that’s the case, why are F2s counter productive to use?

For instance, LB users need 1k range to get optimal damage. But when you send your stalker/red moa out to attack, none of the F2 buffs will reach the pet owner. But if you keep your pet on passive to try and self buff, you lose the dps you’re expected to get via the pet damage. All F2 buffs of this sort are counter intuitive to use for range weapons, LB/SB/Axe.

F2 pet buffs should ignore range for the pet owner and should be guaranteed to benefit the owner.

I don’t really think Durzlla is exactly spreading misinformation Aridia, but i do find it somewhat confusing here is a better way to think of it.

Before the patch imagine your dog had an actual leash on it with a chain at the old distance, what happened was you got in range to release it from that chain and attack without any type of leash on it after the fact.

Now it’s more like using a retractable leash giving it a greater start attack range(still not sure about that), but more shockingly it does not release pet from it after starting the attack and seems to run out of chain length fast pulling it back to you.

You do NOT have a greater start attack range now and you never had to get in range to release a pet. If your range is greater now, it’s done artificially and it’s completely intellectually dishonest to call it that.

I know this because prior to this patch the pet has never refused to attack an open field siege for me, when I was at least 4k+ away in WvW.

What’s more likely is, assuming the patch notes were not a typo, is that the start attack range was never taken into account so it never mattered, but now it is, and it’s a bigger number which like stuffing a piece of kitten into your sandwich and calling it a burger, just like the QZ animation fix.

in Ranger

Aridia.3042

Ther are 3 problems with F2:

1. Pets will ignore F2 until their current queue has been executed.
2. Movement on that part of the ranger/pet will prevent F2s from firing.
3. Ranger has no priority in receiving F2 buffs in large groups.

The fix should be:

1. F2 overrides all current pet actions.
2. See above.
3. Pet’s owner should be guaranteed to receive the F2 buff regardless of range from the pet. Allies would still be limited by proximity and/or AOE cap.

ranger has thankfully improved largely due to the community better understanding the profession;

Since when?
There is 6-7 of us trying to better the profession and make people see the good points, then there is a few hundred trying to undermine what we try to build by being trolls, kneejerks, kittens and other forms of kittens.

Then there is the warrior fanboys that think unless its name starts with warrior and ends with warrior, then it sux from the get go and will never be good.

Then there is a huge pile of “dreamers” that have no intention in playing the class properly, but instead just whines about ONE TINY ASPECT of a description made probably a year prior to launch not being correct 2-3 years later.

There is no community. It is just a collective soup of negativity and trolls.

White knights don’t slay trolls, they merely feed off them.

They’re just two sides of the same coin to me as they’re both just as toxic for any proper discussion.

New style items: Right idea. Wrong direction.

After reading this thread i looked up Tera armor sets. Regardless of what you feel about the skimpy sets, the armor designs in that game blow everything in GW2 out of the water (IMO). Anet would do well to get even half of the ornate, detailed craziness you see in pretty much every set i’ve seen in that game.

I’m very partial to Korean designs for that reason, despite their fondness to dial up the street walker factor.

Personally I think getting something that looks like L2’s designs is a happy medium.

I’m sadden by the fact that people seem to think Wings of Dwayna is a good looking bow….Even a lowbie A grade from L2 looks better than anything there is in GW2 currently, nevermind getting into the crazier stuff like Dynasty or Icarus bows. There’s a lot Anet could learn from Korean designs.

Yes, but you can’t see what it does, or if quick draw still exists. You have a name and a position, nothing more.

So I should assume that a trait called “Piercing Arrows” is not going to be the trait that gives rangers “Piercing Arrows”? No, I’m not going to ride the crazy train with you.

I’m sure it does. Just saying it could have additional effects too .

You were in crazy town before, but now you’re the mayor of the town. Because in that optimal universe it’ll mean both piercing and quick draw could lower bow refresh.

Dude, seriously, give it up. If it looks like a duck and quacks like duck….

If you’ve been playing rangers long enough, you should know this is just par for the course.
