Personal Story Restoration
Some updates to the Personal Story are coming. I’d like to take this opportunity to give you some details on what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what to expect in the future.

Background
Back in 2014 we released the September Feature Pack, which introduced a number of changes to the game. Among those changes were revisions to the Personal Story, including a reorganization of certain story steps. The “My Greatest Fear” story steps were deactivated for many players, and three steps from chapter 8 were moved into chapter 7. This prevented some players from accessing certain content and also introduced some continuity errors.

What We’re Restoring
To put it simply, we’re reactivating the “My Greatest Fear” story steps and putting chapter 8 content back in its original position in the overall narrative. We’re also making some minor improvements to the content, like writing and recording new voice-over for a few key characters, tweaking some camera moves, updating select art assets, and more.

What This Means for You
When the update goes live, it will restore the Personal Story steps in chapters 7 and 8 to their original order. This will affect a small number of users who currently have characters in certain states of story completion. You can check your current story completion status by accessing the Story Journal in your Hero Panel. By default, you can access this inside the game by pressing H and then clicking on the Story Journal tab and selecting My Story.

  • If your character has not completed “A Light in the Darkness,” (chapter 6) you should not encounter any issues. You will be able to experience the Personal Story in its restored order along with the minor improvements that begin with this story step.
  • If your character has not completed “Forging the Pact,” you should not encounter any issues. While you will not be able to replay previous story steps to see some of the minor improvements that were made, you will be able to play the “My Greatest Fear” story content (based on the choice you made at the end of “A Light in the Darkness”) and also experience the restored chapter 8 story steps.
  • If your character has completed Forging the Pact and skipped ahead to “The Battle of Fort Trinity,” then you will not be able to play the “My Greatest Fear” story steps with this character.
  • If your character is currently playing “Against the Corruption,” “Cathedral of Silence,” “Romke’s Final Voyage,” or “The Source of Orr,” you must complete your story steps through the Source of Orr to begin chapter 8. If you do not complete “The Source of Orr” before the Personal Story restoration goes live, you will be advanced to “Victory or Death” upon completion of “The Source of Orr.” “Victory or Death” is the final Personal Story step (and you will miss out on most of chapter 8 with this character). This is due to these steps being moved back into chapter 8 and the successor steps being restored to their original state.

If you don’t like people playing music then stand away from them. The hearing radius is quite small.

I don’t do it for donations either.

You’d be surprised how many people enjoy the music while waiting for a que.

I really like the exploring part of the game, and pure PvE portion of the game. I like doing quests in peace without worrying all the time about getting ganked by griefers. Many MMOs I played just simply dump open world PvP into the game just to please PvPers, but all they please are griefers and jerks (looking at you Aion).

And no grinding aspect. I used to play MapleStory. The first half of the levels can be completed by pure questing. But then they run out of quest and you’re forced to kill the same monsters in the same map all day until you reach max level.

Also, no monthly fee. I don’t want to feel forced to play the game as much as I can to get the most out of my subscription money worth. I take a break and come back as I please.

I also like the fact that you don’t need to spend real money to purchase cash shop items. I don’t like spending my real life money into cash shops if possible, since it makes the game P2W and I don’t feel like I earned those stuffs, since I just magically obtain them from nothing I did in the game.

I don’t know how anyone feels like Trehearne stole their glory. He credits a lot of success to you, and by the end he gives you command over the pact to take down Zhaitan. In the personal story, your player character is the hero that defeats Zhaitan with the help of Destiny’s Edge.

Trehearne is probably the best written character in the original personal story. He actually has a story arc and some kind of development that is very apparent to anyone paying attention. Anyone who played a Sylvari probably knows this better than anybody else as he appears in their story before any other race’s story.

Mind you, all of the characters are written poorly in the personal story. The personal story suffered from lack of character development; it was detached throughout, and Trehearne was so “good” because he was present through most of it, especially if you were a Sylvari.

I remember during the beta when I played a Sylvari and chose the “Green Knight” story path, I was so intrigued by having a rival in the Green Knight. I thought the Green Knight was going to be reoccurring for me. How cool would have that been? A rival that was unique to my choice that would appear throughout the story… nope… just a throwaway arc.

Destiny’s Edge 2.0 is pretty well developed now though when compared to Trehearne.

TL;DR: Trehearne may be hated, but he is the most developed character in the personal story by a large margin, and that makes him the best character in my opinion. In fact, if he wasn’t so developed people wouldn’t have this strong opinion about him.

I just hope there’s more concern for serious and adult storytelling. Her Disney background is leaving me rather skeptical.

In my opinion, Disney stories, while they are addressed or presented in a manner that can be approached by the mind of a child, actually present core concepts that are not childish at all, as they deal with eternal themes that cross ages, cultures, and languages. I find Leah’s background to be impressive on many levels, and I have complete confidence that the story of Guild Wars 2 will continue to be presented in a manner that focuses upon mature players. (I don’t speak for Leah, I’m just stating my opinion as a team member and a player. )

At what point then is it acceptable to attribute failure to an individuals inability to play the game and learn?

I feel like the carebears who advocate for people to be nice all the time and just accept other peoples constant failure are just enablers, letting people tell themselves that it isnt actually their fault and the players telling them otherwise are just jerks. This game needs MORE events like this, not less.

Anecdotally, I had a player on my platform that refused to kite Warden II. No matter how much we asked him to kite, explained it to him and tried to be nice, he would respond with “kitten you, dont tell me how to play!”. Are we supposed to just say, oh ok special snowflake, we understand. This must be our fault??

Mm. No, advocating for people not to be kittens after events isn’t enabling people to intentionally not improve themselves. If they think they don’t have to put in some effort, they’re simply not being honest with themselves. Saying nothing, however, and letting people get picked on after events is enabling. The spiteful comments which come surrounding this type of event is what we’re chiefly discussing. I’m asking for people to stop and take a moment in serious reflective thought, before the abuse happens.

If you have to speak with a player about performance, by all means speak with them. Constructively. Tactfully. Privately. Please again note where I say everyone should attempt to acquire information on the event ahead of running it, but I certainly wouldn’t expect everyone to. It would be immensely helpful to have foreknowledge, but again, it’s not a foolproof method. There can and will be failures. Review accurately and without bias. Accept, renew resolve and move on.

Still, this is why your anecdote is useful, however (and I love the phrase “special snowflake”, as it happens. It never fails to bring a smile). It seems like it wouldn’t be your fault, and clearly it’s hard in such a situation to find out what the other player’s real deal is. The rest of you on the platform are in a spot and it’s not an easy one to think out of – aside from just letting him die of course, and another of you kiting instead. Which is a risk. We do have to accept there’s going to be some players out there that come off badly. We don’t have to like it, either. But what we don’t do is call insults on map chat or any forum about the guy in a cruel way. Even if it seems they deserve it (they don’t, no one ever does). As I’ve just said, you can have a quiet word if you really must – which takes more nerve, I think, than using map chat – and maybe you won’t get anywhere. Maybe you will. Perhaps you’ll find out the player was having a truly terrible RL day, and thought to get over it by being in game. Then felt harrassed (albeit unduly in truth). Perhaps they really shouldn’t have played that day (and I do think, if you’re feeling angry, fed up, sad or just down in general, group events may not be a good idea as you may end up just feeling worse). Perhaps they feel a total moron for screwing it up so royally. Maybe thereafter you help them make amends. Yes, I’m throwing a lot of random scenarios out there, but life isn’t black and white. It’s mostly variations of grey (no 50 shades jokes, please). Understanding that will help a lot of us get on with working through these events successfully. Without that, and working on pure bile, they will invariably fail.
