So I am new enough to not have crafted a legendary, and have noted with interest the new legendary crafting/mastery path/thing coming in HoT.
I have a character currently at 90-95% map completion (my second, if it matters). Given the pending arrival of the HoT expansion, is there an advantage either:
- waiting until after the expansion before finishing the map completion on this character? or
- finishing map completion on this character now, before the expansion?
I have asked around in a large guild, and I have received conflicting answers. I would like to try to find a consensus.
Thanks in advance,

The good, the bad and the ugly, from my experience so far this Beta Weekend testing Druid (cleric exotic gear, monk runes, staff + sword/warhorn … and sometimes staff/longbow, default/supplied build).
The Good
Map design is truly immersive. Well done!
The healing output of the build is crazy. This might be “good” or it might be “bad”. I guess I am not certain if there is a valid reason for making healy-Druid healing output so high. Maybe the designers want to give a boost while people learn raiding content, then follow it up with a nerf when they consider content to be “learned”.
The Bad
The story is, in my opinion, rather mediocre. I consider this to be not meeting expectations/hype.
I do not like what I call “encounter design”. I feel that damage output from staff-Druid is rather poor (see build details above). Maybe I have overlooked a few things. People will say Skill number 1 is OP, and it might very well be, except I find I cannot use it for as long as I would like, except in party sizes of 4-6+, and the other skills just don’t seem to do much if any damage. Additionally, I find the scaling to be bad at the low end (i.e. single player). This really makes the experience rather unenjoyable for me, just like the horrible Living Season 2 boss fights from Chapters 4 through 8.
“Mastery Point Accessible” nearby on the map … really? I cannot seem to access them. These need to be better labelled/accessible.
The Ugly
Game/client/patch stability. Wow, QA = zero, or? So many things missing/non-functional. The less I say the better, I suppose.
Summary
It is Saturday morning, so there is a lot of Beta time ahead, but my initial feeling is that I do not like the heally-Druid. I have not tried the raid, and I suspect it will turn out to be a raid/group content build only. Which raises a bit of a can of worms … the game might now need a way to handle multiple gear sets in PvE.
Additionally, all the bugs associated with the Beta patch really detract from the fun of testing beta content. I would encourage the managers at Arenanet to iron out these wrinkles as a modestly high priority.
Twice during the first run of the new Brisbane Wildlands mordrem event I have crashed to desktop and lost all progress (event 1: 19 reduced to 2 on login and after relogin: 12-15ish reset to zero).
This seems like a really bad bug considering loot is rewarded after the event is over, based upon the number of waves defeated.
Please consider a very quick bug fix for this event.
I am prepared to consider the possibility that Ranger might not have been the best choice to accomplish what I want to accomplish as a first character.
My ranger is my first character. I have learned a lot with the LB/SA spotter build on metabattle.com but I am looking to improve my survivability for the menial “first charcter” type of stuff: gathering + crafting, loot trains, exploring + map completion, getting stuck with a few too many enemies, and the often painful and not-so-solo-newbie-friendly Living Season 2 story (shakes fist at Chapter 5).
I currently use Berserker armour, weapons and accessories with Scholar runes (mostly exotic but a few ascended and rare items). For me, this is a bit too DPS-focused. I need to find something a bit more “tanky” or “hybrid-y” I guess.
I have been reading up on Celestial gear + Traveler runes, and have also wondered about Soldier’s gear + Dolyak runes (probable overkill for most people).
WvWvW and PvP are simply not on the radar for this character. I will make others for that, when I feel I am ready to explore those mini-games. I do dungeons and fractals often enough, but a dungeon-focused build is not what I need at the moment.
I cannot find any builds, anywhere which cover my needs. And so I have come to these forums asking for advice. Please be aware that gold is a limited resource for me (20-50 is my current range) and so I need to have reasonable confidence in “the new gear” before I craft/buy/acquire it.
Possibly of note is that my Leatherworking and Huntsman skills are each in the 420-435 range and that I have over 200k Karma, possibly for buying exotic Soldier (or other set) gear.
As a relative newcomer to the game, I am looking to develop a fairly detailed understanding of gear in the game, so please do not short-cut the explanations in the hope that I might understand (I probably won’t, for the record).
Many thanks in advance for the suggestions, advice and discussion.

@ Bomber: If those are minimum gear requirements, there should be a clear advisory before people spend money on the story unlock. Expectations need to be realistic.
I have full berserker gear, at least half of which is exotic and properly runed/sigil-ified. The other half is a mix of ascended and rare. I do not see how I in any way could be considered under-geared for this content. It is clearly scaling badly for small groups + solo. Thankfully I happened across a group of 50-100 people for the Frostgorge Sound portion. I hate to think of how unpleasant that would have been solo.
I have continued on, and now am very seriously frustrated with the difficulty of The World Summit fight with the Shadow Dragon. There is nowhere to stand during a few of his area attacks, and I see no obvious way survive the hit.
As if the encounter was not already bad enough, when you die you have to watch all those cut-scenes over again. It takes 5-10 minutes just to get a chance to fight the Shadow Dragon again. How can this be the nearest Waypoint?
All of these issues reflect rather poorly on what would otherwise be considered engaging story content.
I bought the Living Season 2 story line for 1280 gems this week and wish to express my disappointment at the very poor scaling of the content once reaching the Fort Salma and The Iron Marches parts of Chapters 2 and 3.
It seems this was designed for a time when there were tens or even hundreds of people doing this at the same time. Doing it now is nerd-rage-inducing, especially the events in The Iron Marches. The rest of the content in the game scales quite nicely, but this seems to be a rather glaring exception.
I do not feel my gear is unsuitable for the content (lvl 80, mixed exotic + rare with a few ascended items) and would like to ask the devs, respectfully, to investigate and adjust the scaling of the content to allow for soloers and small groups.
I do not really want to post specific examples, because these would/could be spoilers.
Respectfully submitted,
