Nicely written post and I 1000% agree. Shouts are pointless. As are a number of skills on the rangers choice list.
Perhaps a shout that provides 12 might stacks to the whole party? like your pet doing it or something. Sure we have our Stalker but come on, guard gets 12 might stacks in 2 seconds (if that) of channeling, ranger gets 5 and we have to take a pet along that does only that.
Alternatively, remove shouts altogether and bring back preparations like what we had in GW1. Those things were the bomb.
And yes that was the first post.
If Roy can make something pointless do something, however tiny, it’s an improvement to the class guys. They can’t make guard more useless than it already is….could they?
Shade has recreated it already. The shout utility one. Thank you Gail
I bet they are! I’ll see what I can do.
You merged a thread about shouts into one about WHaO… Roy said he was gonna have a look at that :C
I am disappoint
Shade, do not be discouraged. I sent this thread to Roy on twitter and he reaponded saying “I work on all combat/profession things. All skills/combat designers are involved in the design of each profession.. I agree ranger shouts need some work though, I’ll take a look at the suggestions.”
THIS IS PROGRESS
I don’t like the way he responded with that. Just shows a complete lack of respect for the ranger community.

Instead of “Guard!” (the most useless skill in the game) can we have a channeling skill that shares 12 stacks of might with the whole party like what a Guardian has?
No? oh ok. Sorry for asking.
Hopefully the might duration will be similar to fortifying bond so we can at least obtain a good duration of 25 might from mainhand axe then switch to longbow or greatsword for a good burst. I don’t care too much about the loss of a quickness gimmick build, but the ability to get high might on our own is pretty important to keep.
lol sorry. only 3 stacks now. GG again Anet, your win streak continues.
The complete outcry from the Ranger community here is unreal. Its unreal, but long overdue. And every point being made about favouritism, not play testing your game, hate towards the Ranger class etc can be backed up.
This is like a partial release of the Ranger frustration that’s been boiling up for months now. Do you even read the Ranger forums? that’s a serious question because I have my doubts. Rarely have you ever listened to us and our suggestions (The people who actually play your game very frequently) or asked us about things. “Druid feedback pl0x” doesn’t count.
You can’t ignore us this time, at least if you do you’ll lose what little respect your dev and balance team have from us.
So I was playing as a Ranger today and I beat another ranger, finished him off and then set a spike trap for the next guy to try attack me. As the enemy ranger respawned, so to did his pet but it respawned at the location of the guys death. This has happened to me a few times and originally I thought it was just a graphical glitch or something because the pet would disappear after a second or so, maybe even less than that. But now I know that the game actually recognises the pet as being there because when it respawned, it set off my spike trap. The thing fell to the floor, got up and then disappeared.
I removed the signet on some games depending on if they have a thief or two or not and replaced with sic em and it still works well, though I found I often didn’t even need to with the spike trap + condis.
Been using this recently, very nice. Fun to play.
I didn’t say adding new stuff will. I said it would be a start. And you’re right, spirits could be a great way to give a Ranger a more unique role, if only they had more health, moved without the need of a trait (which was removed anyway) and had 80% chance to work. Shame I would still never take one in PvP as the Survival skills/signets are infinitely more helpful for the current Meta.
Traps again could be great and some of them already are. (but when have you ever seen a ranger run frozen ground or w/e the chill one is called). But they just don’t warrant the ranger still wanting to be used and had around.
I feel like they have no direction, and they also have too many skills that should be the defining factor but can’t be because on their own they just aren’t good enough. We need more skills that work on their own and which work well.
You guys remember them right? A staple in any Rangers build… Glass Arrows, Apply Poison, Kindle Arrows etc. Where’d they go? Why were they not brought into GW2? Ranger at the minute has no uniqueness and no use. Theres nothing a ranger can do that another class can’t do better. I mean Anet talk of balance and simplification, but they refuse to fix one of the most disliked classes out there. Not 2 hours ago I saw a dungeon group advertising “No rangers!”. Obviously you don’t join those groups as they are what we call elitists, but seeing as almost any other profession is welcome, kind of points out a massive flaw in their game. We’re not even the most mobile class, something that we absolutely are supposed to be, and right now we’re not even the best duellers, an ethos that was strong in GW1.
I feel that bringing Preparations back could change that. Maybe giving us enhanced speed preparations, or AoE bleeding like what Glass Arrows did. If they then buffed bleeding damage, we could have a purpose. Same would go for AoE burn. Of course there are a lot of problems with the Ranger and they aren’t all gonna be fixed, but it could be a start…
Then again, when was the last time you saw anet post in the Ranger forum thread that was actually meaningful to class development? all other classes have 2 or 3 in the first 5 pages, not us.
