There’s an event in Dredgehaunt Cliffs and another in Fireheart Rise. The update notes drop several clues about them.

Are engineers "agro-grabers"?

Different types of mobs prioritise targets in different ways. Very few actually do it based solely on damage or healing numbers.

In GW1 they often picked the target based on their health or armour. I’ve noticed a few people here report getting aggro-locked when they have high toughness so it seems that this mechanic is still in play. This also explains why turrets (and other profession pets) seem to sometimes instantly take aggro as soon as they spawn since they have lower health and toughness than players and certain mobs prioritise this.

I’m also certain that mobs differentiate between single target and AOE damage. If you hit more than one target with a skill they build social aggro for ALL the targets hit I believe. This is why engis are constantly pulling mobs onto them using the grenade and bomb kits in multi-target situations.

there is really no love for turrets huh?

Turrets scale with level, so a turret from a level 80 is much, much stronger than a turret from a level 40. However, they do not scale with attributes.

Ahh okay shoots down my primary theory then.

But with more gameplay I can confirm turret agro oddities. Doing a character plot quest where I had to fight one guy, The second I dropped my flame turret he instantly switched targets.

If the aggro mechanics share many similarities with GW1 some enemies will prioritise low-hitpoint or low-armour targets. I would assume turrets have less health than a player so it’s quite likely this that causes the sudden shift even before the turret attacks. Mesmers have the same issue with illusions.

Personally I think this leaves certain pet-based builds at a severe disadvantage in PvE as pets in general are simply not tough enough to survive direct attacks in many situations and players have few ways to stop the mobs making a bee-line for them. They also need a damage reduction from AOE effects in my opinon.

Are you suited to play ele?

…A badly played ele should not suck, they should be able to get by like a badly played thief or a badly played warrior. A well played ele should be able to do incredibly well just like a well played warrior or a well played thief…

The design goal should be:
-equally low skilled players draw
-equally high skilled players draw
-low skill vs high skill loses (the greater the skill disparity, the greater the loss)

Dumbing down the ele makes the third option less likely or impossible, which is why any ‘fix’ (beyond bug fixing/tweaks/etc.) should be to ‘smarten up’ the easier classes and NOT dumb down the ele.

You do realise that most people are actually discussing the low skill vs low skill issue right? The fact is as it stands right now a low skill <insert profession here> can kill a medium to high skilled ele. So by your own definition of the ‘ideal’ the profession is broken.

Those of you parading around claiming to be god tier elementalists are irrelevant to the argument as that is not where the problem lies.

People don’t even want the profession ‘dumbed down’, they just want the current complexity of playing the profession to be adequately rewarded. Please re-read that last sentence. And again. We do not want the profession complexity changed. We just want numbers tweaked to bring us up to par. Cooldown reductions across the board would be enough, to be honest.

The healing spring is created on death not downed. So it’s pretty useless…

What's the point with using a Longbow?

in Ranger

The longbow was overnerfed at the end of beta at the same time as the shortbow was buffed. That’s why the shortbow is generally seen as a more effective weapon.

The longbow’s auto-attack bonus from range simply isn’t significant enough to warrant the difficulty of maintaining that range, especially when coupled with how slow the attack speed is. As a result is has very limited uses.

Ideally it should work in a way that shortbow is better in mid-range skirmishes and the longbow is superior at max range. Instead currently the longbow barely even manages to get even with the shortbow at max range. It’s undertuned, simple as that.

Are you suited to play ele?

You know the simple fact that this argument is recurring so often on the ele boards makes it pretty clear that there is a problem.

ANet never stated the ele is the ‘hard’ profession; in fact they claimed that the necro was the hardest which makes it clear they never intended the ele to be this difficult.

Maybe if they wanted to put a big red banner on character creation when selecting the ele that says ‘hard mode’ some people’s arguments would be hold some weight. The fact is though that the ele is not meant to be any harder to play than other professions. It really is as simple as that.

Add to that the issue that eles are both harder to play and less rewarded for doing so and they reach the situation where anyone with half a brain would call them ‘underpowered’. No, their big burst combos aren’t that great given that they have cooldowns reaching 30s or above. The other professions have no cooldowns that high on their burst.

A badly played ele should not suck, they should be able to get by like a badly played thief or a badly played warrior. A well played ele should be able to do incredibly well just like a well played warrior or a well played thief. As soon as the same skill levels on different professions result in different returns you have an imbalance, and no amount of claiming everyone else is ‘bad’ will change that.

elementalist is superior over warrior when it comes down to pve

i got both and my warrior is 80, ele is just so much better. YOu can actually aoe 20 melee mobs as an ele (if you ever find that many) because they’ll never even reach you when you play your class right and put effort. As wwarrior you can’t. Not to mention ele’s staff ccs are so useful in instances

warrior is “good” but definitely not op for anything , be it pvp or pve

I’d love to see a video of you doing that. I don’t think any ele is actually capable of that, especially if any of those mobs are ranged.

The fact is most of the people in this thread have no clue how good they have it. Warriors are one of the top tier professions in this game; they have been since BWE1. Everyone here go play an ele to 80 then come back and say warriors have problems…

Having problems playing other classes after Ele.

Agreed. This is why I’m so militant about those players here who want to “buff” (aka simplify) the Elementalist class.

Buffing does not necessarily mean simplifying. Be a bit more open minded please. Eles could benefit a great deal from simply having their cooldowns reduced as their current combos can’t be repeated more than once every 30s or so. That wouldn’t make the profession any simpler but it would go a long way to improving their current situation.

Insane amounts of armor/weapon clipping.

The ones that really bother me are when actual armour sets clip with themselves. A lot of the light armour sets clip on the human male. I mean, these are two peices from the same set, so they should have been modelled specifically to account for each other surely? My elementalists thighs are constantly poking through his robes…
