Legion of Honour [XIII]
Elementalist
I also welcome all the newcomers (which feels weird since I feel like a newcomer myself)!
@AdelaisAer I am an ele, and I will help you in any way I can. There are many other helpful eles in here, too. Yes, I think it is difficult to play until you get the hang of it. I did a LOT of research, reading forums and watching videos on-line to help me get the knack for it.
My husband, Erec, is not on as often as I am, but I really think he will benefit from this guild. He is not as sociable as I am, but I have a feeling he’ll get more outgoing after meeting all you friendly people. :-) I don’t make a habit of speaking for him, but I’ll thank you all for the friendly welcomes on his behalf, knowing that it will take him forever to figure out the forums. ;-)
@wildcode…everyone has pretty well said what needs to be said about this guild. As Gilosean said, it was just us two on HoD, and after moving, it was just me, at least, as far as I know. But I have been able to interact perfectly well with other guildees, and have done Tixx runs, and hopefully will be doing some dungeon runs in the future. Might try a little more PvP as well. So you’ll just have to decide if it fits you or not; I don’t feel the guild will be able to change for you on this one. It’s pretty accommodating, but no doubt won’t be able to please every type of player. This is laid-back, casual, family atmosphere as other members have said.
Perfect for me. :-) (I’m gushing. I know it. I’ll stop. ;-)
@Vlawde…what do you MEAN what is the griffin plushie for? It’s adorableness, of course! (It’s a mini-pet. Just a collector’s thing, as far as I know. Probably an achievement out there relating to it I’m sure.)
Thank you, I figured as much. xD
I can switch between representing, of course; the guild I have with a few of my friends is very small and not many people are on at the same time, so it’s more of a roulette. I can guest on a server where the most people are playing, since I don’t get to group with said friends often.
I got so tired of not being able to do dungeons and things because I’m always soloing. Dx
@Tetraethyl…that is EXACTLY what my problem was, too! So glad I joined LoH…everyone is really friendly and it’s casual, no pressure. :-) Hope to see you in game!
Thank you, Glitch and Kaii for the explanations. I think I can commit to that. I am happy to help others and I definitely need it myself at times. :-)
The book I just finished was “Tess of the D’Urbervilles” by Thomas Hardy. I’m not actually usually into classics, but I got into this one. I typically read fantasy. I read the Inheritance Cycle probably last year, I think, whenever the last one came out. I read all four of them in a row, b/c it had been so long I wanted to refresh my memory. I wasn’t in love with Eragon (as in the first book, not the character), but by the end of the series, they totally redeemed themselves. I loved it. :-)
I have bought a LOT of books this year. Mostly YA, which isn’t really usually my thing, but there’s a lot of good ones out right now. I’m a librarian, too, so I have easy access to books I don’t want to buy. ;-)
Great to meet you, Glitch and everyone else, and hope to see y’all more in game!
Thanks for the invite and welcome! Naturally, because I joined then I haven’t played in several days. :-P Got involved in a book.
The book is done now, so I will be back on soon, hopefully. :-)
I did not answer the Operation: Union question b/c I wasn’t exactly clear on what that was. I mean, I get the main idea, but not what I’d actually be committing to.
I have never tried to talk or group with someone on another server. Is that possible?
Lol, probably true, however, I have a lot of family that I play with, thief, rangers, engineer, mesmer, and I feel like I’m at least as powerful as they are, maybe even more so. :-)
I have an ele, and have only played this so far. Well, I guess I had a guardian I got to level 5. :-P Anyway, I have read a lot about the ele and a lot of negative things about them, and I just really disagree. I can’t compare to the others since I haven’t played them, but I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite. No, we don’t have the weapons swap, but what we DO have is attunements. Fire/Water/Air/Earth. I think this is a HUGE advantage. I think the ele is tricky to learn, but once you’ve got the system figured out, I think we’re deadly! I have mostly soloed this game and am lvl 75 right now, and I have not had issues. When you do get into a big group or a big boss, you just have to kite. It takes longer to kill them probably, but you get the job done.
At any rate, I don’t feel that it is twice as much work to be an ele as other professions. Not once you’ve got your system down. Focus on a build, I focus on power and healing. Figure out your preferred weapon combo-I play scepter/dagger. Get a system going, I usually start with fire, then when I’ve exhausted all my spells, I go to air, then earth, then water only if I need to heal. I have both elementals loaded, plus the storm spell.
It’s probably a class that you’ll either love or hate. I do think it’s more difficult at first, but gets easier as you are able to start spending trait points.
Alaric, I also should let you know that I have found builds for eles where they CAN focus on healing, on area healing, which is what your water attunement does. So there are builds out there where you can be a great help for area healing.
I have to disagree with Erthrak…I HATE the vistas. Oh I think they’re beautiful once you find them and enter the scene, but I hate trying to get up there! I fall so much. Could be b/c I’m playing on a laptop with a crappy graphics card so everything is kinda jerky, but still. Probably my least favorite thing from the game.
I started with and am still playing an ele. I think it is a difficult class, until you get it learned, and I think that there are people who will never like it. I did a bunch of research online to hear what people were saying about eles and I think that helped a lot. I try to put most of my focus into power and secondly into healing/vitality, rather than toughness. I have tried all the weapon combos, but scepter/dagger is my favorite. It’s tricky finding the combo of spells to do the most damage; I’m constantly altering between fire/air/earth/water attunements. If I get a big guy or too many enemies on me, I have to kite then, which really isn’t so hard. But generally I have so much power that I kill them before they kill me.
Anyway, it probably was more difficult at first with the ele, and I actually didn’t like the game at first, either. It was nothing like I expected, and nothing like GW1 and it took me a long time to get used to it. But once I did, I love it! I just work on my Personal Story and exploring mostly.
If you still don’t like it, I agree that it may be helpful to try a different profession. I think with any of them, though, it’s important to remember this game is more involved, and you are going to have to MOVE sometimes, instead of just standing there casting spells.
Hope that helps!
Wow, this thread has grown quite long!
NAME: Mandy
Main Character: Mera Darklady—Human Ele
Current Server: Henge of Denravi-US
Interested Activities: I’ll do anything, really. I do mostly PvE, but I want to do more dungeons. Done a little PvP. No WvW, but I’m not opposed to it.
Active: It varies. Usually Tuesday afternoons, and most evenings after 8:30ish. Weekends are hit & miss. I have a 1 year old and a 6 year old, a hubby, plus 2 jobs, so got to work around them.
Additional Comments: I’m fine soloing, but it’s been fun to do maps with others. I generally play with my hubby and my brothers-in-law, but it’s hard to find time for us all to play at the same time, and I don’t want to wait that long to do dungeons. I don’t really like going back and helping others clear maps I’ve already done, but I really need to go back and farm so I probably wouldn’t be opposed to it.
Thank you for the gallery! I have a question. I completed the entire Sparkfly Fen map, and received all the Stately armor pieces from Karma vendors, even an aqua breather mask, EXCEPT for the shirt. I cannot find that anywhere!! Anyone know where I might find it?
Okay, great! I’ve used the TP to sell, but have never looked to buy anything. I just assumed they were expensive, but that doesn’t sound bad at all. Thanks!!
One solution would be to have one free waypoint in each area. This way the players would still need to pay or walk if they wanted to get into the areas where the action is.
As I’ve already suggested, Tom, the obvious solution is to make the nearest waypoint a free ress from defeated. If you want to go anywhere else you have to pay…
Yes, I love this suggestion. :-)
I agree that you can always walk, you are paying for the convenience. Except when you DIE, I think it’s totally unfair that you have to pay for a WP when you die. There isn’t always someone around to rez you, and so often when there is, they just run right by. :-P
I’m an ele, level 21 right now, and I have determined that the scepter/dagger combo is definitely my preferred weapon set. The problem is that I keep getting these great staff drops, and not getting scepter/dagger drops. So I have a staff that’s up to 288, while my scepter/dagger are about 180 each. I tried crafting a scepter, but it was lower, and I have not been able to find a weaponsmith that offers a better one. I REALLY don’t like playing with the staff, but it seems silly to let a great weapon sit there and use less damaging ones.
So, two questions. 1) Is the combined damage of a scepter/dagger pair equal to their total damage together, OR is it the best between the two? (What I’m asking is if a scepter/dagger set of about 180 each is equal to 360 or 180?)
2) Where in the world can I get some better scepters? Will crafting be my best bet? If so, what’s the best way to advance my artificer craft so I can start making the good stuff? Or maybe I need to browse the TP?
Thanks for any help, tips, suggestions, comments. I’m loving the ele, but it is very difficult to master, I think. Not got the moving and dodging thing down yet, and seem to have trouble with healing. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it as I practice more, but I would rather do it with my preferred choice of weapons!
I have an Elementalist, and I die a lot. I feel like I die way more than I should, b/c I have some pretty awesome skills. I do know that I don’t do enough dodging/moving, so that is one reason for this. Then today I watched some YouTube videos on Ele’s and had my eyes opened to their potential. I personally think they’re freakin’ awesome. I would def pick one again!
So, yes, I think the biggest factor is the player.
Now it remains for me to figure out how to maximize my abilities…

Are things like DriverSweeper and Game Booster “safe”, meaning I won’t get viruses when I download? Should I run both? I am using an HP laptop that meets min requirements for the game, but I have a difficult time navigating; movements are jerky. I have it set on “best performance” and still having the issue with the navigating. We thought it was internet speed, but it is in fact the graphics card, b/c it plays fine on the desktop. I have noticed that even on the desktop it seems REALLY slow if you toggle b/w the game and your desktop, and I think it crashed once or twice. Never thought about the graphics card getting too hot. We upgraded the one that came in the Dell to the newest Nvidia one at the time, but this has probably already been 3-4 years ago. Would it be beneficial to upgrade the drivers for that?
GW2 is a “hobby” for us, so spending thousands of dollars on a gaming system isn’t possible. We need two, b/c my husband and I both play. I already checked and I can’t upgrade my graphics card in my laptop. Will probably buy a new one in the future, but not yet. So, looking to make the best with what I have. I know I need to do some tweaking to boost performance, but I didn’t know where to start, so the thought that there is a software out there to do it for me makes me happy!
Samaul, I think your initial post is helpful, but was thinking it would be nice to have instructions on how to do those things for those of us who feel like we’re reading something in a foreign language. :-)
