This lengthy match-up has probably been the most competitive I have seen so far. Sure, we won every week, but the quality of opponents was second to none and we had some epic battles. I never had a dull moment. Aside from a few loudmouthed braggarts and crybabies I have nothing but respect for our opposition. The Glicko system is working as intended, matching up relatively equal opponents. It does have a fatal flaw as some pointed out, the match gets stale after a while. We want some fresh meat for the grinder. I don’t think Anet is going to abandon the current system so we are stuck with it. If they at least let us be a different color each week so we get a different view of the world.
@Choo: you guys are a fun bunch. What was up last night with that Omega golem jumping up and down on SM outer wall after you captured it? lol
I can’t believe we pulled off that backdoor ninja attack on SM. The fifteen of us were standing in the green circle when we spotted a mass of red coming through the door. It was like: “OMG! Here they come!”. You guys were about .5 seconds from preventing the cap. Good times.
Not to sound condescending or anything, but by now I think most people know that weekends are for the most part irrelevant. Matches are won/lost based on weekday coverage. So while it sucks being outmanned on the weekend it has little bearing on the outcome of the match. It is kind of lame that people choose to boycott the game for bugs that effect everyone in the same manner, but it is what it is.
All of this fancy math is great and all, but it leaves out the most important part of the equation, the human factor. Let’s face it, playing the same match-up for three weeks in a row is boring (unless it is relatively even). Especially if it is a lopsided match-up. Things are great as long as your server is winning, but being stuck in a tier hopelessly outmatched for three weeks takes it’s toll on a server’s WvWvW community. Players either transfer to a winning server or stop participating in WvWvW altogether and only diehards like me are left to carry on. In my opinion (I know, everybody has one) the current ranking system is not fluid enough. Servers advancing/dropping tiers happens way too slowly to keep match-ups balanced.

I am afraid it may be too late. Three weeks in T1 may have broken Blackagate’s spirit. Using my guild as an example, at the beginning of our T1 adventure we easily put 20+ guild members on a single map. Nowadays we have maybe 20 on total during NA prime-time, five or six are in Wvwvw, another five or six have left BG and are in WvWvW on a different server and the rest is just standing around in LA. This isn’t exactly a sign of a healthy WvWvW community.
Awesome fights in SBI BL last night. I can’t believe we held garrison for as long as we did. Thanks to everyone who participated in the carnage. It was a lot of fun.
Didn’t you guys have some HoD guilds transfer in and power you guys through the tiers? Not saying you don’t deserve to be in T1 but I thought that was what happened.
No. The time when TA dissolved and we gained HoD guilds was right around when we hit Tier 3. Beating two servers with only NA coverage (FA and TC) and then beating two dead servers in our Tier 2 match-up (HoD and ET) could hardly be called powering us to Tier 1. We rose to Tier 1 so quickly mainly because of lopsided match-ups. We would have ended up in Tier 1 with or without HoD influence. In retrospect I wish our Tier 2 match-up would have been more challenging. That would have better prepared us for Tier 1.
Unfortunately what happens is when one server gets ahead it becomes demoralizing. This happened a lot with the old HoD.
The thing you have to decide is whether it will defeat you or make you stronger. JQ and SBI have both been through the fire ourselves. Heck our first two matchup threads on guru were way worse than the ones this match. You just have to take your licks and resolve to learn from it and come back stronger. I have faith in you guys (even though a few annoy me) that you will survive the fire.
This is precisely why I was hoping that we would drop to T2. People got it in their heads that we cannot win against JQ and SBI. Maybe if we face different opponents people will start queuing for WvWvW again.
The second commander proved to be a dud and he vanished within 30 minutes. After that we were left to fend for ourselves. It was sad to see all the territory you gained disappear.
I nominate Smokee for human cloning experiments. We need more commanders like you. The minute you left EB things started going downhill fast. Within an hour we were outmanned and then we got pounced upon.
Ironically our NA coverage is probably the weakest. The server is full but nobody is queuing for WvWvW. That makes me a sad panda.
Whoa! There are some holes in your euro coverage. Even though I know it is temporary seeing all the borderlands red brings a smile to my face. I wish I wasn’t at work.
I believe that we already are tanking the match. The facts that our major guilds are only putting forth a token effort and when you see a commander on a map it usually is a junior commander leads me to believe that. This is a good thing, our commanders and players are getting some rest, our junior commanders are getting some experience on the maps we do play on and we are losing the bandwagon trash. It is a win-win situation.
Lots of BG aren’t playing due to a sever case of the I played too much last week’s. The thing is the benefit to JQ and SBI having the WvW depth to draw on is the ability for you to not have your players burn out. Sure Blackgate is a full server, less than 10% of its population is currently working with our council, and of those people that are we cannot field the raw numbers that the bandwagon available servers can. People can’t bandwagon to BG easily, we’re full nearly 24/7, but that does not mean any of those people on have much interest in WvW. It is really easy for everyone to wonder what is happening to BG, the point is very simple, we’re tired. Nearly all of our commanders are tired and need some time off, and more and more are returning every day. So to put simply, we will come back up here and be more organized if we move down.
Thought If we can get half of our PvE people to WvW 3 different nights of week, the scores would be far closer. I know I for one along with several other guilds are trying to make this a reality now.
Just so you know, since you’re talking about numbers of people you can field and what not. On JQ last night we were queue-less in every map all night long. I’m not saying you weren’t still outnumbered, but on our TS server we were talking about similar limitations in the number of players. When I first got in our commander was having trouble getting 15 people to group up together.
I think we at BG are one step beyond that. Not only are we queue-less on every map we are also out-manned on 3/4 maps. I wish the out-manned buff did something beneficial to help even the odds rather than signal our opponents that we are weak and now is the time to crush us.
I view BG’s third place finish and high probability of dropping to tier 2 this week as a good thing. I haven’t seen any of our major guilds in their usual numbers nor have I seen our top commanders as much as I used to, which tells me that people are taking it easy this week. Blackate is going through a period of cleansing. We are shedding the bandwagon players like crazy. These special snowflakes are now polluting someone else’s queues and undermining their new temporary home’s reputation. That is a plus in my book. When we come back Blackgate will be stronger than ever.
While it may appear as 2v1 what we are really seeing is tactics 101. Please stop your nerd rage and try to think for a minute. Put yourself in a SBI/JQ commanders shoes.
Basically you have two choices:
1. Attack an equal opponent and fight tooth and nail for every point.
or
2. Go after a weaker opponent and grab as many points as possible with the least amount of effort.
If I was a commander at SBI/JQ I would be doing the same exact thing and I would choose 2. It may appear like 2v1 but in reality both servers are just taking the path of least resistance and grabbing relatively easy points from us. Eventually they may turn on each other but as long as we keep providing them with easy gains it won’t happen. It sucks being on the receiving end but that is how it is.
The biggest challenge we faced at BG this weekend was the lack of players. Historically we have always been strong on weekends. I don’t know if we had a mass exodus or people just didn’t want to play but being out-manned on 3 out of 4 maps was not at all uncommon. Hence we could only focus on a few maps and were forced to leave the rest without any BG presence. I think our opponents can agree that wherever we had the numbers we gave them a good fight.
The other issue I have seen is lack of confidence in our commanders. We have a handful of well known, outstanding commanders and when they are around we do well. Unfortunately they cannot be on 24/7 and on all of the maps. For every outstanding commander we have one or two that purchased a status symbol for 100g. Case and point: last week I was in BG BL and the commander that was in charge was performing rather poorly. After several of our zergs got wiped in pointless attacks people started questioning his tactical decisions. This is what he had to say: “I don’t care what the peasants think. I am a commander and you will do what I say.”. The end result is that even when one of our excellent commanders is in charge people tend to ignore their orders and go off doing their own thing. Since Anet made it relatively easy to obtain commander status I wish they would implement some kind of performance based rating system.
I fail to see what is resolved by coming on this forum and whining about hacks and 2v1. This will happen, there is nothing you can do about it and nobody gives a flying kitten about what you (the OP) have to say about it. The only thing that is accomplished is making the OP look like a complete kitten and giving your server a reputation for being a bunch of whiners. There are appropriate channels to report hacking (not this thread) and 2v1, well if you can’t stand the heat then stay out of the kitchen. Let’s keep this thread respectful and check your whining at the door.
I am not buying the 2v1 conspiracy theory, what I saw was a desire shared by both SBI and JQ to smack down the new kid on the block. We at BG just have to prove that we have what it takes to stand up to that.

Greetings from Blackgate. You may find it hard to believe but the majority of us on BG are guys/gals like you just looking for a good fight, and WM bring it. I am looking forward to seeing you on the battlefield. I salute you.
Sadly guardian is relatively useless in wvwvw. The pvp mechanics are heavily in favor of ranged classes and a guardian just can’t compete. All I ever did was run around flailing away with my scepter and watching 9/10 Orbs of Wrath hit nothing. On rare occasions I got to grip someone and hit them with Whirling Wrath. The only time I felt like a was actually doing anything is during sieges. With the guardian self heals and health regen I could just park myself under a wall, sit there and throw Smite at the wall above me. I got quite a few goodie bags doing that. That being said, I never had problems with not coming out ahead as far as making gold goes. As long as you stick with a group that is constantly capping you should make money. I am hoping that Anet will do something to make guardians more competitive, but for now I am playing a mesmer.
