I think it has a lot to do with Z level. It seems to happen a lot underwater when you’re right up close to a mob but above or below them. I’ve also had it happen with flying mobs. Also noticed it during theevents in Orr where the Risenattack the camps. When the waves of Risen start charging in they are often invulnerable for a time, en masse.
What about the things like guild emblem and guild stash, do these need to be re-earned on the new server too? If so, wouldn’t this mean the emblem could be different on different servers?
FOV in GW2 is 75, which is the same as the default in Half Life and WoW. While I understand people’s desires, (I play source engine and quake engine games at about 105 or 110), we are not just limiting it for technical reasons, there are also gameplay implications that we are taking into account that we believe are a core part of the game. Additionally we keep it at 75 to maintain the integrity of our art which is also important to us and many of our fans. If there was a single reason we might think about looking for a workaround, but because it relates to core issues for 3 of our major departments this is not an easy problem and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.
It may be the same FOV as WoW, but there’s something about GW2’s camera behaviour which causes problems in a way that WoW doesn’t. Perhaps the smoothing fixes you have planned will help with this.
But if the smoothing fixes don’t alleviate the problem and people keep reporting sickness, please will you consider a compromise of adding a FOV 90 setting. FOV 90 shouldn’t cause too much distortion, won’t give any significant PvP advantage (its far from extreme), but will go a long way to helping quite a lof of sufferers (not everyone, but it will help many).
I totally get the “artistic integrity” argument as artist / designer myself. But believe me when I say that someone suffering from motion sickness isn’t bothered about the artistic integrity of your product, they simply aren’t playing your product because they are lying down in a darkened room feeling very ill instead. That’s one less player likely to spend any money on expansion packs or gems.
Yes it does…
It may not be super noticeable to some, but it’s very noticeable to me and to plenty of others. It also may not bother you at all, but it would bother some people, myself included.
Then don’t turn this option on (if they add it)! No-one is asking for the default FOV to be changed. We are asking for an OPTION to adjust the FOV for those that wish it. So it doesn’t have to bother you at all, you can continue to play the game exactly as you do now.
Overall the story has been patchy. Some very enjoyable quests and interesting twists, particularly early on. But then some quests I couldn’t wait to end because they were either so boring or far too long (the one where you rescue some scientists from a cave springs to mind). I’ve found the story got worse as the storylines for the different races and orders began to converge and it all became much more generic. Plus it meant spending ever more time with Trahearne who must be one of the dullest and least inspiring leading characters I’ve come across in any MMO.
I don’t mind the style of the cutscenes with the characters facing, though I would have preferred to see them standing in the correct environment and have more than 2 characters in view at once when it’s a multi-person conversation.
Voice acting is patchy. Very patchy. Some of it is actually rather good, especially the Asura and Charr characters, with some good laughs along the way (especially the early Asura missions) but this tends to be the incidental acting outside of the fixed cut scenes, which are mostly rather dry and dull.
But all the voice acting is eclipsed by one huge issue – just how terrible Trahearne’s voice acting and scripting is. I don’t know if the problem was that the script was so poor the actor just couldn’t get inspired by it and phoned in his performance, or if the actor wasn’t up to the task. But however you look at it, it’s an awful, lifeless, emotionless performance that sounds like it’s being acted on first read through and it really turns the clock back to the bad old days of amateurish voice acting in games.
Fav playable – Asura by a long way. Funny, quirky, masters of style!
Fav non-playable – Skritt. Always make me laugh. Make them playable!
Least fav playable – Sylvari. Dull and humourless. The voice acting just makes it worse(Trahearne being the most obvious offender).
Least fav non-playable – Krait. Irritating and annoying. Risen are a close second.
I can see no logical reason for not adding FOV adjustment. The issues of nausea / motion sickness / headaches / dizzyness (it varies from person to person) etc are REAL and they need to be taken seriously. It has been proven that allowing the FOV to be widened to around 90 or 100 is sufficient in many cases to alleviate the problem to a point where the game becomes playable instead of inducing long-lasting sickness (the problem often doesn’t stop the moment you close the game).
To hide behind the PvP argument is lame, lazy and evasive. Widening your FOV (within sensible limits ) does not give a significant advantage and besides anyone with multi monitors can achieve this anyway. If its really a genuine concern then just cap the adjustment at FOV 100, this is far from an extreme FOV but should be plenty enough to help alleviate the sickness problems for most sufferers.
Here here. I just finished spending several hours kitting out my 80 Asura Engineer and 80 Norn Guardian with rares and a few exotics from the Trading Post and what I had collected from zone completion rewards. I spent about 3g on each character. With careful choices and use of transmute stones I’ve got a look I’m happy with too, for now. Of course this isn’t the end of the story, there is gear out there I want to try to obtain, but all in my own good time.
As the OP says, this is truly liberating because now I know I can take on any content I like because my stats are decent, and whilst my gear can and will get better it will be incremental improvements and cosmetic changes. Sure, in the long run it’ll be nice to have full exotics and a legendary weapon. But for now what I’ll mostly be chasing is fun and aventure in PVE and WvW, not stressing about the gear treadmill.
Is your GPU fan spinning up properly when under load? I found that mine wasn’t. I have a Nvidia GTX260 and for some reason the GPU fan was staying at idle speed during GW2 sessions, even when there was heavy load. As a result GPU and motherboard temperatures were soaring and I was getting lockups. I’ve not had this problem with other games, so it’s either GW2 specific problem or a problem with the Nvidia drivers, or a combination of the two.
The solution was to download a free application called MSI Afterburner which allows me to manually control my GPU fan speed and monitor temperature. If I set the fan manually to around 75% speed with Afterburner then I don’t have any overheating problems. If I forget to manually set the fans ….. toasty!
I’ve been really enjoying my Guardian as melee in PVE. But in PvP its a different story, partly because the class lacks a viable way to slow an opponent and keep them in melee range, and partly because the scepter is a truly awful weapon. The scepter just isn’t viable, it’s too slow and is tedious to use. It’s bad in PVE but it’s next to useless in PvP.
Guardians shouldn’t expect to be ranged powerhouses, no-one wants or expects that. but they do need to have a VIABLE ranged weapon. Either boost the scepter or better still give Guardians access to the Longbow, as this would suit the design of the class just fine.
I was levelling in Metrica Province with my little Asura Warrior. I entered a cave full of Skrit that were +1 and +2 levels above me. Got out of my depth and pulled a few more than I could handle so decided a swift retreat was the best course of action. As I exited the cave with a horde of Skrit hot on my tail, an Asura NPC standing outside the mouth of the cave exclaimed “Haha, you ran from Skrit!”. Oh the shame! The game is full of wonderful little touches like this.
Great, thanks! Time to experiment then
Once created for the first time, can the guild emblem be re-edited? If so, is there a cost?
