I’m guessing it’s the perfect environment to introduce the minions of the DSD. The Consortium are going to be in just as much trouble as the adventurers & refugees by the end.
Perhaps it is revealed that the karka have been DSD minions this whole time? Dun dun dunnnnnnnn!
Someone needs to learn what the word massive means hint not 5 ppl, doing DE events sums up MMO more than dungeons, leave dungeons were they belong 2004 / wow, gw2 does group events beter though DEs and should be the focus of this game. Think of a chain event of DEs like the temples for the end of flame story instead of another lame dungeon? More ppl see the content = more ppl happy
My main issue with group events is that, while they are awesome, because of the massive collections of people they can’t deliver the same mechanically interesting thrills that a dungeon boss can. A good example would be the gigantic king karka. It was a cool and huge event boss that was enjoyable to do, but its moment-to-moment gameplay paled in comparison to this recent double-trouble endgame encounter at the conclusion of molten facility. I think the dragon bosses are another example of how world events are a little bit ‘diluted’ because of the larger playerbase; they remain stationary throughout the entire encounter and generally have very simplistic encounters when compared to some of their contemporaries in the dungeon world.
another thing to note is that simply because more people can play a piece of content does not mean that the content is inherently better. Quantity of people that can play the content is cool and all, but QUALITY also needs to be considered. And this 5 man dungeon is as accessible as can be! Its difficulty is easy enough to be cleared by a vast majority of the population.
As for the above sentiment of the option for a player to play through an easymode single player version of the dungeon or do the thing as a group with advanced mechanics, I would be in support of that movement.
(@Elbegast.6970 continued…) I’m afraid that the 5 man dungeon model is a staple of MMOs that doesn’t have any good reason to go away, considering the MMO’s defining feature is the ability to group up with and take on challenges with fellow adventurers. There’s a reason WoW and GW2 both love the 5 man – it’s a good vehicle for delivering content with interesting mechanics.
Yeah, I felt like southsun cove was heavily underutilized. I was so excited when it first came out, and after the gigantic karka was slain I was disappointed to find that the interesting new environment had nothing around it to encourage players to stick around. I hope this will remedy that!
I had enough of 5 man dungeons in WoW. I came here to get away from that model. I played GW1 for years and never had to group to complete anything. Until the end of my personal and F&F storylines, I could solo the entire storylines. Now, my PERSONAL story will forever go uncompleted as well as the F&F storyline.
I don’t join guilds. I have no one on my friends list. I don’t beg and grovel others to carry me through content.
Don’t get me wrong; I like seeing other players in the game world. I like stopping in and helping them out, if I happen to pass by. I DO NOT like depending on them, begging them, hassling them, so that I may complete MY storylines.
If I wanted to party to run my dungeons, I would still be playing WoW.
The issue here though is that even the game’s personal story concludes in a 5 man dungeon, that dungeon being arah story mode. From the beginning dungeons in this game have been a part of the Guild Wars 2 manifesto, and I’m sorry to tell you that if you came away from WoW with the intention of no longer doing 5 man dungeons then you will be missing out on content in this game. It was clear from the beginning that people were going to be expected to group up with others in dungeons in order to complete modern and future content.
In addition to this, the 5 man dungeon is just downright fun. It’s a satisfying and entertaining conclusion to the story arc, and the thrill of finally putting a nail in the molten alliance coffin following a mechanically interesting fight with 4 other adventurers far surpasses any of the single player content found in the living story before it. Why not at least give it a twirl? – the difficulty curve is pretty close to what is expected of you in the rest of the game.
I can understand if you do not like 5 man dungeons, but this game has included them and encouraged them from day one. I believe that dungeons provide the most interesting conclusions to story arcs.
Yeah, it looks really cool. I also like the headline as well. I think it’s because I’ve seen flame and frost imagery for 4 months, so seeing something a little more tropical with colors other than white and red is pretty cool. It’s my favorite piece of GW2 art to date, actually. Give whoever made this a pat on the back.
New thing I want! Please make one of the rewards an exotic level 80 aquabreather. Or maybe introduce ascended Aquabreathers? :P
The F&F Dungeon was fun and unique. When it disappears in a week, it’ll leave us wanting more. That said, I’m am eager to return to Southsun for new content, whatever form it will take.
It left me wanting less. I can’t even bear to log in right now because I can’t finish my personal and F&F story due to the dungeons. They just sit there, on the top-right of my screen, mocking me. It’s destroyed all of my motivation to play.
Really? I don’t understand that. The dungeon isn’t extremely difficult if you’re well geared, (a prerequisite that is prettymuch assumed when you’re dealing with new endgame content) finding players isn’t particularly difficult (try your guild, friends list, lion’s arch map chat, or third party looking for group website), and the dungeon doesn’t take very long at all. You’ve still got a week to do it, too. This isn’t even mentioning the fact that it’s outright fun and features one of the coolest boss battles we’ve ever seen in guild wars 2.
Why are you unable to complete this content?
What I THINK will happen…
-The first time we saw southsun cove we got the fractals of the mists. Maybe we’ll get some new fractals this time around!
-Infinite logging axe and harvesting sickle introduced into gem shop
-Story line either directly involving or playfully hinting at an impending attack from an elder dragon (Maybe a certain mysterious water dragon nicknamed ‘bubbles’?)
What I WANT to happen…
-New fractals, including a new boss fractal based upon the finale of the molten facility.
-renown hearts, new events, and changes to the friendly population of southsun cove that will make the area an actual zone that people will want to visit in the future.
-An awesome southsun cove-themed dungeon a la molten facility, featuring some new breeds of karka.
I really liked the other one ending in a dungeon. Cooperative experiences in a highly controlled environment with 4 other players gives the developers an ability to easily create interesting scenarios and mechanics. Single player stories can’t really have the same feeling of gravity, and world events are always going to have to be tuned to be incredibly easy thanks to a massive number of participating players.
In addition to this, finding players for the aforementioned dungeon wasn’t really a challenge at all for me, personally. The game has ample resources like guilds and Lion’s arch map chat, as well as external third-party sources like looking for group websites. (Though a better in-game LFG tool would be nice.) The difficulty was also very reasonable, and I would anticipate the conclusion to an epic story line to have this level of difficulty. I don’t mind the concept of it ending in a dungeon one bit.
Except it generally costs money for museums to keep a special exhibit open, and the exhibit is temporary because the artifacts need to be moved to another location so a different museum can host them. These reasons are completely irrelevant to why the new dungeon must be removed.
For those who want a changing experience, if the dungeon were persistent simply stop playing it and your world will be the same as if it had been removed. On the other hand, for those who have college exams, or are on vacation, on business trips, have family in town, are getting married, or giving birth, etc. keeping the temporary content around makes all the difference.

But there is no proof that you or the OP will do the content next month if you are not doing it this month. As Jamais vu.5284 put it, temporary content gets people to log on and actually do the content while it can be done.
The issue is that, while temporary content forces people to do it in the short run in order to experience it, it also limits future players in that they are restricted only to old content. The base of guild Wars 2 is a good game, but this new flame and frost dungeon is a NEW level of quality. By making it temporary and taking it away, unless a new dungeon in currently making its brief cycle players are left with only the worst content that the game has to offer!
In addition to this, new content will ALWAYS be popular regardless of how long it sticks around! Look at the fractals! It was wildly popular the second it made its big debut, and players who enjoy it can still enjoy it today. Would the benefit of more players playing the fractals at launch really be worth the entire dungeon being taken away in a month? Of course not! Long term content allows players who want to enjoy that content to enjoy it when they wish. Players who get tired of the content can simply choose not to play.
Finally, in regards to the ‘continuity’ argument: Is a little bit of living story continuity in the form of a single dungeon existing after lore has passed it REALLY worth the best piece of content Arenanet has ever put out being taken away from the hands of the players? Is lore really so important to this game that it trumps good content? Is this game’s story actually worth more than the game itself?
This game’s content cycle is questionable at the moment. If new content were constant, and there was ALWAYS something new in action, this temporary content would be fine. But the problem is that this does not exist. When this flame and frost dungeon is taken away, players will be left waiting until the next patch with nothing new at all to tide them over. The cool new dungeon will be history, and we’ll be left with nothing but the old dungeons that pale in comparison to this new content. Essentially, we’ll be stuck with old content while we wait for the actually good stuff to make a return.
I completely agree, and I’m going to keep commenting on these because I love this game and want to see it flourish.
This new Dungeon contains some of the best dungeon content Arenanet has ever made. The trash had interesting and unique mechanics, the cutscenes and story are interesting and entertaining, and the boss battles are absolutely divine. Old dungeon issues like enemies with excessive health and bosses without mechanics are totally gone, and running through the entire thing is such a blast that I would play this dungeon over and over again for no reward at all.
on the other hand, the launch dungeons are a mess. Enemies absorb way too much health, boss encounters are too drawn out and lack interesting mechanics, and nothing even comes close to what we’ve seen in this new flame and frost dungeon.
so, these things being considered, why is arenanet taking away the better of these dungeons are forcing their own players into running the WORSE of the two options? What MMO intentionally removes its greatest content? How can an MMO expect to grow and build upon itself if its coolest new additions are taken away from players as soon as they are given?
I want to see more new things like the fractals or the lost shore update. give us cool temporary events like the king karka that players can remember and cherish, but also give players new experiences that they can encounter over and over again. Don’t force us to continually play the oldest and weakest content the game has to offer by taking away everything new and shiny!
Is the integrity of the lore REALLY worth removing the best content when one considers that players can still kill Zhaitan every single day if they want to? Is keeping content fresh by introducing new content at a temporary time as if the world is growing really better than just allowing players to decide for themselves when they want to to content? Do you really want the epic, awesome finale to this dungeon to be remembered only in the memories of players and youtube videos? Why are you throwing away the best mechanics in the game and leaving only the mediocre ones?
I’m on my knees, Arenanet. Let us keep this awesome stuff!
I completely agree. Why is this content going away at all? I understand that the world is always changing and transforming, but is this adhering to logical and ‘realistic’ sequencing of events really worth taking away content from players? If you never add any new dungeons to your game permanantly, then players are left only with old launch dungeons to run over and over again! I’m tired of playing old content over and over again, and only being able to play new content for tiny amounts of time. Why can’t we get these things permanantly? This content is all great, my only complaint is that it is all limited, and then we lose it forever.
Do Guild Wars 2 developers really want their game to be known as the game that never seems to grow since every new addition is taken away weeks after it is introduced? New players have to dig into the game’s archives to even find out if you’ve added any new content!
More new stuff like fractals and WvW updates that actually stick around, please! It sucks to think that so much developer effort is spent on fleeting experiences.
I agree. While temporary content taking place in the world makes the guild wars 2 universe feel like it is living and breathing and constantly going through stages, the issue is that if patches do not leave behind a significant amount of permanent content as they go along the game will not feel like it is progressing. It will feel as if new events and activities are being introduced, but because they do not stay the game never really grows, it just stays in place in terms of the amount of content available.
Updates like Fractals of the Mists give us brand new experiences that players are still enjoying to this day! Updates like temporary dungeons (possibly this Flame & Frost dungeon) will never be enjoyed again, and as a result this possibly great content will not become a permanent facet of the game. Do we really want Guild Wars 2 to be known as a game where all of the really cool, cutting edge, new content is something that you can’t play at all because it goes away after a certain period of time?
So, if we’re going to do this ‘give us something cool, then take it away and never let us play it again’ approach to game design, can we at least see a reasonable portion of each update dedicated to giving permanent content like the fractals or new SPVP maps that permanently affect us? Players still play those today.
I have two questions that it would be nice to receive a response on, hopefully as soon as possible. Firstly: when can we expect to see this bug being fixed? I’d like to earn rewards for playing with my guildies as soon as humanly possible. Secondly: Will we be compensated for rewards that we didn’t receive because of a broken system (Like with Lost Shores? The response for that event was excellent.) Thanks in advance!
Hello! I just wanted to note that, in addition to the bug preventing my guesting character from receiving guild commendations, I am also encountering an issue in which I am unable to see how many merits my guild has in the guild window of the interface.
Thanks for working to resolve this issue!
Good to know you’re working on this, I participated in two bounty events with my guild on Borlis Pass tonight (I guested from my server, Maguuma) and was dissapointed to find that I didn’t receive any awards at all. I also noted that my guild’s merits in the guild window were set permanently at ‘0’ even though people on the home server all saw a ‘15’ next to the counter. I hope you fix this soon and allow us guildies on different servers to enjoy the same priveleges!
