Yeah , I’m a pure MM after all and I really hope that our undead army AL will be fixed in the next update.
I’ve shelved my LVL 80 MM until I see what happens tomorrow. I WANT to play a MM not a conditionmancer or DD Power wells – mancer (both viable and pretty fun, just not what I want). I’m not asking a lot, just have them attack what I attack WHEN I attack it… not that rack of weapons over there.
I’m looking forward to the patch tomorrow (promise of big fixes/changes), so I thought it’d be interesting to see what everyone is either hoping for or worried about. I’ll start – I’d love to see our ranged issues get a “fix”. Either speed up the tennis balls or increase the range on the staff.
If you’re looking to protect your allies/team then Guard. Don’t get me wrong, I have a War as well and really like it. Play style with both Guard and War is very similar (though agree that the Warrior has better ranged options), but Guard seems to have more skill/traits that provide group defense, protection, retaliation, etc. War seems to be more about buffing the groups DPS (might/fury) – you can heal with shouts, but only after a 30pt trait. With Guard, it’s almost natural (plus you can do wicked AOE DPS for fun on top of being helpful).
Guardian elites are somewhat underwhelming… You’re a Bad A with a sword and lighting stuff on fire in melee and then you whip out a book to read…. just a little lack-luster. RF is very helpful, but just doesn’t seem like an elite to me (also the animation is just sad).
On topic though, I played an Asura guard to level 52 and liked it a lot. Very fast hoppy little guy and really great animations for empower, torch skills, etc. Then I deleted him and rolled a Char guard on a whim. I had a Char Warrior and an Asura guardian and decided I wanted it the other way around… probably dumb, but oh well.
So, here’s what I can tell you. The animations seemed cooler on an Asura and you FEEL faster (I know all toons move at the same pace, but Char seem like they’re running through mud). But Char is A) Pretty F’in cool in the first place and B) looks totally bad A with a huge GS. I’m going to be a GS Guardian and a dual-axe or S/A warrior. Elites on both are fun, but long cooldowns make them less usable. I play with RF mostly, because I find it can get me out of a jam at times. PS, IMO Warband trumps golems in fight and fun factor, but it’s cooldown is terrrrible.
I’d also carry around a staff, just for the purpose of dropping Symbols for Swiftness.
I just can not use the staff this way. I wish I could, but when I’m running forward, I tend to cast the symbol and run past it before it triggers. Then I have to run back to hit it and feel like that’s probably not saving me too much time lol. It’s tough too, because my guys a big char, ans when I don’t have swiftness up it feels like I’m CRAWLING….. Oh well, reduced CD on the 2 shouts usually keeps be running between mobs, then by the time I’m done clearing an area I can stack my shouts and be off to the next mob.
I’m only level 52 on my Chardian, but this is where I’m at now:

and this is where I’m aiming to be by 80:

You probably need to cut and past the links….
I’m having a blast leveling with Greatsword an Sword/Torch. I’m pretty easily able to take on multiple mobs 2-3 levels higher than me, which I haven’t been able to do with some of the other classes (I am also leveling weaponsmith/armorsmith as I go, so every 5 levels I have new gear). You’ve got access to two quick gap closers and tons of single target and AOE. As soon as possible I grabbed Retreat and Save Yourself for the speed bursts (they also provide great defense/boons so very versatile). My third utility is usually Purging Flames (low-ish cooldown, AOE condition removal and fire combo field = perfet with GS and it’s 3 combofinishers). Try that out and hopefully you’ll have as much fun as I have, it’s quick leveling and a ton of fun ==> Blinding blade, pull in a bunch of mobs, drop the symbol, leap, spin to profit + once you’ve blown all your cooldowns switch to sword/torch, light yourself on fire and annihilate anything that’s left. No downtime. Have fun!
What animation should they have? I can’t imagine that anyone would want to roll a char is every time they were in the water they did a doggy/kitty paddle
Funny thing (not really) that I found yesterday: Skritt Burglar also destroys all minions. I found a random chest out in the open, opened it of course, an there was the new Skritt Burglar. I started giving chase with my Minion “army” in tow, and he morphed me into some little walking kitten Poof. All my minions gone. Now I defend MM on most of these posts, but that was too much. Decided to blow off the dust on my Chardian until something gets fixed.
+1 Tickboxes for all but pants would be nice. Wrong forum, but it’d be nice for Norn too, with their tattoos (Asuran and Sylvari have markings too, but probably not as bad-a shirtless). You select a tattoo at creation and then cover it up for the entire game.
TRUE, very true… should go w/o saying. We have 2 switchable weapon sets and DS, if you’re not using it all of them then you’re missing out. Off topic, but this is also why I don’t understand everyone comparing axe/scepter and only the damage on the #1 skill. Who plays with just the #1??? That should be the spammable filler in between your cool-downs… I digress.
BUT, if I had to choose a “Main” weapon right now (pre any potential/hopefull 11/15 buffs to axe – please) that main would be the staff.
Just about the only time I get completely owned is when I’m knocked back/down over an over… Without a “Shake if off” you’re SOL. I may trait into the DS=Retaliation to help with this, then at least I can return SOME of the pounding…. to bad fear only affects your target (unlike “fear me”) and only last about .5 seconds….
I originally thought like the OP, that staff would be my backup weapon, then I played with it. Greater marks traited, I love the thing (though the sound could be better and 1 could be a little faster). But gather a few mobs by 1 tab-cycling through them, drop 2, 3, 4, a well and DS/Life Transfer and you’re an AOE god
I just hit 76 this morning with a minion/power build and I’m having a blast (PVE only). Sure, there are issues with the AI that I would love to see fixed, but it’s still completely playable in PVE. I run with blood, shadow, bone, fleshie and well of suffering or spectral walk (depending on if I’m in a big fight or want quick movement). I play around with stats, but usually 30/0/20/16 (not 80 yet). I’m not saying this is the best build ever, but it’s fun and I almost never die while MOWING through mobs (plural, no issues with multiples). I use staff mostly, but switch between my other set (sometimes Scepter/Dagger and sometimes Axe/Dagger – dagger for another condition removal) and DS frequently giving me a 3 weapon rotation. My minions siphon a little health, add a little damage and take a lot of aggro (then their not attacking a weapon rack). Even if they attack some inanimate object, I can kite around them and they’ll be back in the mix. So, point of this post is to say give it a shot, after lvl 40 (when you get more minion health) I found this to be my favorite setup.
Bigger is always better and also, just re-skin the jagged horror with the skin used in GW1 (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Jagged_horror). It’s awesome and should be simple enough, right? I loved my GW1 necro, but unfortunately the minion army isn’t going to happen again (would love Anet to prove this wrong), so if they could just make the minions work (attack what I attack and only that, not the random Centaur weapon rack) and look cool, I’d be perfectly A-OK with the 5 minions (+ an occasional jagged horror) I usually run with.
Halloween event ends today, so I’m hoping for a patch. I’d love to see them just address some of the bugs (especially those having to do with minions/my reason to necro). Here’s hoping for some good news. If it’s not today, they (devs/anet) mentioned a big patch coming in November (in the Halloween event forum)…
“Thanks guys, we will take a look at this. It shouldn’t be dying so quickly and it certainly shouldn’t be drawing aggro on its own.”
Thanks for looking into this! I can also add to the statements that the minions do their own aggro thing. I was attacking Sons last night and my minions wouldn’t break their focus on the nearby dragon pillars/towers. Thanks again for following up on this!
Greatsword might be a nice addition, but hammer would actually fit better. Anyone remembers Necromancer Munne in gw1 pre-searing catacombs ?
I’m killing time before I can get home to enjoy the Halloween finally and I was just about to mention this…. I definitely think that the 2H Hammer would be great (imagine a 2 Skull-Headed Hammer in my Asura Necro’s Hands). I was a big fan of Munne from GW1 and adding it would be a nice homage
Realistically, would add another nice melee weapon and potentially some decent CC too… I vote for a hammer (though I wouldn’t pass on a monster greatsword with a whirling attack that summoned a horde of zombies).
Nice job! Wish you would have been rewarded for the effort with a little better in the drops department, but overall it’s always fun to solo something you’re not supposed to solo.
I remember thinking this was going to be such a great trait when I started playing (there was something similar in GW1)… then you see it, it’s a tiny little blah and then it’s dead… I really like my necro (completely in spite of all the bugginess), but I have to agree that this is one broke trait.
Necro isn’t nearly as squishy as a eng, which is weird because of the light armor (I REALLY wanted to love my eng, but just kept gettin’ ded and not a huge fan of ‘nades). It’s also a lot of fun (if you can get past all of the negatives posted in these threads). You can play a power build and be in melee (dagger dagger) or stay out of harms reach with staff, scepter and axe in a variety of builds. Heals are pretty decent and the DS can be both safety blanket and offensive power for you. Have fun with it. Oh, I also shelved my ranger in favor of the necro.
