Distance increases response time, no way around it (limited by speed of light). 10,000 miles does make a difference. Plus longer distance usually means more in-between devices (routers, switches, optical switches), which all introduce some delay too.
Plus that means using the transatlantic fibers which are in high demand, and increases the chances of packets being queued somewhere, introducing jitter. This would translate in game into lag spikes (you know, that dodge roll on kill shot).
Yes, in some cases, mainly if the devices between you and your local server, are overused then you may get better speed using the remote one, but as a general rule, we’re better with local servers.
If GW2 goes esport one day finals, qualification will be local and finals will be played on LAN anyway. Like all sports (real or e-).
