At the end of the day, I usually head back to Lion’s Arch and do a quick run through my newbie zone (Sylvari) to get the other 14 kills I need (since like you, I’m 80 and get one type of kill in Orr). Only takes maybe 10 mins at most.

Downed players, F-inishers, and You!

I’ve seen a lot of misconceptions and frustration regarding downed players and F-inishers, so I decided to post a little “get to know your downed players” post so that people can start being pro-active in dealing with downed state instead of frustrated.

First of all, a lot of people are coming in with the attitude that a downed player should already be dead. This is just not true. Sure, in other games that’s how it works, but not this one so you just need to get over that hump right now. If you go in with the attitude that getting a player to downed is only 75% of the fight and by no means guarantees your victory, you’re going to save yourself a lot of frustration.

Next you need to accept that most classes are going to have at least one interrupt for your F-inisher. This is where paying attention to who you’re fighting is key. Here’s a breakdown of how the downed player is going to ruin your day:

Elementalist – Yay! Free stomp! Or if you’re really slow, they get to mist form away.
Engineer – AoE knockback.
Guardian – AoE knockback.
Mesmer – Body doubles. Keep stomping until you hit the right one.
Necromancer – Single target fear
Ranger – Daze nearby targets
Thief – Short distance teleport. If not immediately stomped, they can also hide for 3 seconds.
Warrior – Single target knockdown. Wait too long and they get to rally, ending in immediate defeat.

Awesome, now you know what to expect from a downed opponent. So how do we intelligently deal with these abilities?

First of all, you’ll notice that warrior, ranger, guardian, and engineer do some sort of knockback, knockdown or daze. What you should be asking yourself now is “Do I have a skill that grants stability?” If the answer is yes, you can pop that skill before stomping to avoid disruption. I’ve heard mixed things about whether or not stability protects against fear, so I’ll let someone else weigh in on that.

But I’m a thief and I don’t have fancy stability! Fear not! You can stomp while stealthed! Stealth stomping will result in success about 90% of the time.

But I’m fighting a thief and I’m slow on the draw and can’t deal with him teleporting and hiding! In this case, you might want to finish them with damage. Remember that this is always an option, and depending on where a player is downed in relation to the fighting, it might just make more sense to AoE the area to finish them with damage.

So now you know how to finish a player, does that mean you always want to finish them first chance you get? Usually the answer is probably yes, but I’d say that in some cases it makes more sense to leave an opponent in the downed state without finishing. First of all, in WvW particularly, players always try to be good samaritans and helped their downed comrades. With even a minor amount of communication between a team of players, you can lure in victim after victim trying to help their downed friends. In sPvP, it’s also worth noting that a downed player is a lot less effective than one who is running around, so if you can leave a player downed, it can keep them out of the game a lot longer. That thief might be doing more harm than good for his team by teleporting and hiding if it’s indefinitely leaving him in a downed state.

So there you have it. Some tips and tricks about downed players and F-inishers. Hope that helps and happy PvPing!

How do you get to the Cursed Shore?

There’s a waypoint and settlement just north of the gate. I ran into it by accident after wondering the same thing. I’m at work so I can’t look up the exact waypoint name, but it is far to the south and east of the shore.

Use the trading post. That’s what it’s there for. If you want to use the mail, you assume the risk. There is no third option.

Qtin you realize that instead of trying to deathblow thieves you can just attack them to death on the ground right?

I know that, now let me ask you something : Why would you create a special Finish Off Button only for PVP, and render it completly useless against 1 class in the game ?

This is how my 1v1 against thieves end up every single time, there is that dude i just owned on the floor, I can’t use the F button so i just auto attack him to death, but WAIT, he teleports behind objects and stealth, I spend 30+ sec to kill someone who is supposed to be dead already. Time that i could have used to tag a base, or help my team mates. And now i’m standing there, between bases, useless, most of the time with low HP, and another thief comes from behind and finish me off.

You are looking at the F-inisher in entirely the wrong way.

First of all, they aren’t supposed to already be dead, so get that out of your head right now. That’s not the way this game works and you need to accept that right now. They are in a downed state, which is only halfway to dead. They still have a bunch of options. Don’t tell yourself that they shouldn’t have those options because regardless of how you feel about it, they do and you need to accept that.

F-inisher is an option in your arsenal, not THE thing to do after you down your opponent. Against thieves, it’s a bad option. Just like any number of bad options you can be presented with, like charging headfirst into 3 opponents or using a 3 second charge skill when you’re getting focus fired. Why do they give you an option that isn’t good against 1 whole class? Because it isn’t useless against that class and it still works just fine against the other four classes (some classes better than others). Play the game the way it IS designed, not the way you think it SHOULD BE designed. I usually F-inish thieves, but I expect them to use both their teleport and their stealth and I account for that. If there are other players around, I focus fire the thief instead of F-inishing them. It’s all about making decisions and not just having a canned go-to response.

Why is it important to do more damage than someone else in a game? I say you and I should do equal damage all day long and the better player succeeds.

Other games fail at this by awarding more time with more power. So while I might be a more skilled gamer – if someone can topple me with their DPS alone is that fair? Is that player more skilled?

That is a broken system if you ask me.

The truth is that because of karma bug, many people made a fortune in the first week and bought up all the good stuff before it got more expensive. So actually there are players in WvW now, which own groups of players.

Legenderies could be more powerful than exotics and i see no problem with your philosophy, since everyone could farm it.

Legendaries are more powerful than exotics. Not much more powerful, but they are more powerful.

Secondly, Arenanet has literally said hundreds of times over the past couple years that gear will be irrelevant in this game. So any complaints regarding there being no gear to grind (or not caring about gear aesthetics) is pretty irrelevant at this point since they made it quite clear that if that’s what you want, this is not the game you’re looking for.

General formula for armor would be the two parts of the armor piece you’re trying to make + any insignia. Insignias are made from the fine crafting mats. Weapons have an equivalent.

Waypoint Costs

You can always get to every major city free of charge by going through the mists to Lion’s Arch and using the Asura gates from there. Your only cost should be outgoing ports, and getting all the way to Cursed Shore from Lion’s Arch at level 80 costs under 4s. If you’re losing a lot of money using waypoints, you need to learn to plan your trips better so you’re not going back and forth unnecessarily.

Buy your mats at the trading post, and prepare to be broke for a while. There’s no easy way to do it that isn’t very expensive.

If you want to level it “quickly,” prepare to spend a lot of money at the Trading Post. My best piece of advice would be to hang on to all of your fine crafting materials because you’ll be using them.

Also, when you hit 375, purchase one of the second-to-last tier recipes from the karma vendor. Otherwise it’ll take forever to hit 400.

There are level 80 karma vendors all over Cursed Shore. Some that sell full sets of level 80 karma gear. I don’t have the map so I can’t give you specific waypoints, but they’re all over there if you do some running around. I believe each piece costs ~45k karma if I’m remembering correctly.

I just want to mention that there is gear past level 80, it’s just not statistically better. I for one have never cared about the stats on gear, just how it looks, so personally that’s a draw for me.
