Not to bust the bubble on the theory, but it would be difficult for me to have been put up against a higher-ranked opponent when I lost that match giving what my own rank. I think there are a number of things being factored in the algorithm, which is why winning/losing isn’t as important as how you play the match (if you are focusing on your rank).

Win/loss is at the very least a major contributor to your ranking, if not all there is to it. If I win games, my rank goes up. If I lose, my rank goes down, but my play style is identical between games. Sure, some games I do better than others, but I would expect my rank to remain somewhat consistent if win/loss wasn’t the biggest factor in determining rank. Instead, my rank swings wildly up or down depending on whether or not I’ve won or lost.

If you look at the recent big tournaments, you get a good picture of the current state of eles. That is to say that none of the top teams are bringing any eles with them. I’m not saying that you can’t do perfectly well in pick-up games with an ele, but the fact is that the class got over-nerfed and now needs some adjustments to make them competitive again.

They have explicitly said they want all four attunements to be viable and that people who stay in one or two attunements are, and I’m quoting a dev here (I forget which one), “playing the class wrong.”

Yes but if you want to maximize the rate at which you can get laurels, you would do PvE daily and PvP daily every day. Therefore this makes sPvP a must-play.

It’s one or the other as far as laurels go. Doing PvE daily and PvP daily still only gets you one laurel. Doesn’t affect the rate you receive them at all.

I’ve watched the State of the Game videos and all I can say is I’m elated that the developers have explicitly said that they disagree with your point of view (because it’s been brought up… multiple times).

There is a reason for that, because of having 20 abilities many of them could miss and just not care, you had more ways to do the same thing then any other class.

They brought that down all around and now they are bad.

They should limit it to 10 abilities like the other classes and then they can improve it.

So you want to completely change the nature of the class because you think it’s too complicated? Haha, okay, I think this discussion is over.

Elementalists are a great example of how personal skill can make huge difference.

Great Ele’s are head and shoulders above the norm. Ele’s can be easy to play, but mastering them takes a lot of playing time.

This is how it should be. It’s like chess.

The problem is eles are not head and shoulders above the norm, even when played supremely well. They are just plain underpowered.

Now, I do okay in pvp, so I was thinking maybe people are just whining and the class really isn’t as bad off as all the naysayers would have you believe, so I decided to check out the recent ESL games to see how many eles were in the final rounds. Would you believe there were no eles in the finals? Okay, that’s fine, there are other classes that aren’t represented there, so what about the semi finals? Still none. Before that it gets a little harder to look up the team compositions, but going back to the quarter finals there was still not a single ele to be seen. 8 teams, 40 players, 0 eles. I didn’t bother going back farther than that, but I think that’s enough to show that it’s a bit of a bleak situation for my favourite class at the moment.

Fair enough. If you are playing above the level of those around your matchmaking level, don’t worry, it will even out. 3 games is a very small test sample—sure, you got bad teammates a few times, but if you’re consistently playing better than the people around you, you will go up given time.

This is true, I’m just afraid that I’m going to get frustrated long before the sample size grows to the point that it evens out. If things continue going how they are, there’s a good chance I’ll get to 40ish total solo queue matches and then just resign myself to only playing team matches from then on.

Don’t ask for class improvements if you don’t want your class being dumped down, because they are not going to improve the classes abilities when you have access to all of them at once. It would mean casual players would be /decent/ while really good players who can manage all four become /god-mode/.

You can’t ask for improvements when you already have complexity. Something has to dump, and I’m right, most eles actually do only play 2 attunements, because they can’t manage the class very well.

Don’t ask for class improvement when you have complexity? You realize that those two things are completely un-connected. What you’re saying makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. There was a point when eles were absolute top tier. They are now absolute bottom tier. You don’t have to completely change the nature of the class to find a middle ground. The complexity is fine how it is, and casual players who don’t like the complexity should not be playing this class. That’s really all there is to it.

You got it in your head that elementalist has to be this BA class that only a few people can play.

Most elementalists stay in 1-2 attunements.

Elementalist needs new traits that make you want to stay in 1-2 attunements only, and lock out 1-2 attunements as well giving them a stat boost of some kind.

This is hands down the worst post regarding eles that I have ever seen.

Couple things… I don’t think that most eles stay in 1-2 attunements, but the ones that do are awful. I’m going to reiterate that if you want to stay in one or two attunements then ele is absolutely not the class for you. It’s a difficult class to play and should remain that way. It has a lot of minutiae and is incredibly difficult to master. If you start dumbing down the class, then you are taking away the very thing that makes it fun to play.

Please, please, go play some other class. You’ll have a better time, trust me.

I’m not saying that the leaderboard is perfect, but you need to know that the scoreboard is not an indication of how much you’re helping your team. Even things like being the top point capper are not a good indication. It’s a complicated game mode, and there’s a huge emphasis on winning group fights, pulling the enemy out of position, and controlling space. Things like winning a long 2v1 will get you points, but will lead to losing the match as the rest of your team is overwhelmed.

This isn’t a “l2p” post, I’m just cautioning you against trusting the scoreboard. As is the case in most games, numbers don’t accurately gauge your effectiveness.

No no, I totally understand that. When I’m queueing up in team or solo, I always play the part of a roamer and forward point capper. I totally understand that score /= skill and I don’t play to boost my score. A perfect example yesterday was one match in particular, I would go to cap the forward point where it was uncontested and one of my teammates repeatedly came in and stood on the point for the last 50% of the cap while it was uncontested and there was a fight going on at another point where he could have been helpful. That’s just score boosting and isn’t helping the team AT ALL, and I try not to ever be that guy.

What I’m saying is that the fact that I have a positive k/d ratio, I lead in point caps and lead in score, overall I think it’s fair to say I’m doing something right. I’m doing everything I can to help my team, but at the end of the night I’m down 17% in the leaderboard rankings. That just says to me that the system is incredibly flawed.

I main ele and do just fine in pvp. The class could go for a buff, but that’s all I’ll say about that. For those saying they’re too hard to play, no they’re not, they’re just not for you. If ANet dumbs down ele and makes it effective by sitting in one or two attunements, I will rage. This is not a class for the weak of heart and should not be made so.

For those saying it’s just a rotation you need to learn, no it’s not. Maybe you can get away with that in pick up games, but against skilled competition you actually need to know your class and know your options. The attunement you’re in is based 75% on what your opponent is doing and 25% on what you’re trying to set up. Trying to make it into a rotation means you’re making it 100% about what you’re trying to set up and will end up with you waiting to respawn far more often than not.

Rankings in solo queue are a joke. Granted, I haven’t played a lot in solo queue, but I’ll anecdotal example from last night…

Started the night ranked 50% with a record of 12-15. Played three matches. Lost all three, one was a 4v5. Every match I was the top scorer on my team, one game I was the top scorer overall and the other two matches my score fell betwen the middle and top of the winning team’s scores, always had a positive k/d ratio and was top point capper every match. Ended the night 12-18 ranked 33%.

It seems like solo queue ranking is calculated exactly the same way team rankings are, which is almost entirely dependent on whether or not your team won. So if the RNG for who you get teamed with ends poorly for you (as it did three times in a row for me last night), you’re losing ranks regardless of how well you play. The system is so completely broken, it’s not even worth having.

I am a very active player who is looking for a guild to do Guild Missions with. I’m currently in a small guild with a group of RL friends and would like a guild where 100% repping is not a requirement as I plan on switching between guilds frequently depending on who’s online. I currently have an 80 Elementalist and an 80 Thief, and spend most of my time either running fractals or in WvW. I also try and be as helpful with newer players as possible, and have spent a lot of time with some of my more casual-player friends running lower level fractals or dungeons to get them familiar with them.

Every patch seems to introduce one or two new types of currency into the game and I think it’s gotten a bit out of hand. To some extent, I see why ANet does it: it makes it easier to encourage people to experience new content to achieve the new rewards and simultaneously makes the new rewards unavailable immediately upon their release. In the short term, it makes sense to do this. In the long run, it’s going to cause problems with currencies becoming defunct (one has already) and people ending up with piles of worthless currency, not to mention the whole “what does it take to buy this again?” aspect.

Let’s take a look at all the currency currently available in the game:

Gold
Gems
Karma
Laurels
Fractal Relics
Pristine Fractal Relics
A unique currency for every dungeon
Guild Commendations
Commander Commendations (now defunct)
Badge of Honor
Glory
Influence
Merits
Karka shells (used in crafting and to purchase the earring in Southsun)

I think that’s all, but I may be forgetting something. I understand the separate currencies for separate areas of the game, but not the plethora of currencies that all fall under the category of quest and pve rewards.

I think the best solution would be to add a currency exchange to the game, and slowly faze out unique currencies once they’ve served their purpose. Let’s take Fractals of the Mist as an example. To limit people’s ability to deck themselves out in ascended gear, it made sense to have fractal relics and pristine fractal relics as a barrier to entry. Fractals has been active for three months now and people who run fractals regularly have been able to acquire everything that fotm currently has available. I believe now would be a good time to have the vendors inside fractals offer items for gold. If someone really wants ascended rings but hates fractals, I think it’s reasonable to give them an option to buy them for gold at this point. For people who really enjoy the fractal dungeon but have purchased everything they want from fractals, allow them to convert their unusable relics and pristine relics to gold.

This also would help resolve a future problem of defunct currencies. I have piles of commander commendations sitting in my bank that I neglected to use before the vendor was removed from the game. It’s partially my fault for not thoroughly reading the patch notes, but I think it’s also partially ANets fault for introducing and removing a whole type of currency. Although I try to read the patch notes, I don’t feel like that should be a requirement and it’s easy to miss a bullet point like that.

Other currencies, like karma, I think are completely obsolete at this point. It seems unnecessarily complicated to have gold and karma merchants selling what essentially amount to the same types of items. It would make sense to me to phase out karma and just have gold rewards moving forward.

The problem isn’t terrible at this point, but if you look a couple years forward, having all these different types of currencies with no way to change between them and some currencies being phased out entirely, it’s a relatively easily avoidable scenario with a currency exchange.

I also have a boatload of commendations (~2000) and a donation packaging sitting in my bank, and am pretty disappointed to see this was removed with no warning or notice. If I had known it was getting removed entirely, I at least would have cashed in what commendations I had. Is this ever coming back or should I just destroy the commendations?

Equine Fist on Sanctum of Rall is looking for drinking buddies! Currently we’re just a small group of RL friends, but we’d like to open up the guild to the public and have some more people to play with. We mostly play a mix of PvE and WvW with some sPvP mixed in. We are all adult professionals who don’t get to game as much as we’d like, but enjoy drinking during dungeon runs, being social, and just having a good time when we do get together.

The only requirements are mature players who play to have fun and play at least semi-regularly. We try to challenge ourselves, but we really do play to have fun so if you’ve ever found yourself berating people during a dungeon run for dying or not keeping up or whatever, this probably isn’t the guild for you. Honestly, most of us are drinking while we play, so we’re not always on our “A game,” but we’re twice as hilarious in voice chat. Oh and speaking of, the last requirement is that you don’t get offended easily. That’s actually really important. The things that are said in mumble while drinking…

I, like many people, had a lot of problems with the Lost Shores event. I think a lot of it was great on paper, but the execution needed a lot of work. Like many people, I did not get any rewards at the end and was disappointed to see the rewards were so overwhelmingly good, especially after my 3+ hours of participation. Here’s what you did right and what you did wrong:

What you did right on paper was a large, world altering event. I love it in theory. In practice though, I ended up spamming 1 because I couldn’t see the mobs for a large percentage of the event. They just weren’t drawn on the screen. This is a recurring problem in wvw and in all honesty, you guys should have known this would be a problem with an event of this scale.

What you did right on paper is huge, massively difficult bosses. In practice, they ended up being overly tedious, particularly the “reinforcements” phases of the ancient. The parts where we had to break open the geysers or cause the rock slide were good, although I think a little more depth to those types of stages would have been better. The reinforcements though… they were overly long and ended up being no fun whatsoever.

What you did right on paper were large objectives that required large groups to work together to complete. In practice, I think I got 6 or 7 Karka kills the whole time. I just couldn’t get enough hits in on anything to register a kill without running ahead of the pack, which invariably meant something dropped on my head and insta killed me. Again, I’m not sure if this was a rendering issue or if that’s just how the mobs popped, but it wasn’t fun. It was tedious and frustrating.

What you did right on paper were big rewards for large events. In practice, I’m frustrated because I didn’t get anything. 3 hours of frequently frustrating events and no payoff is upsetting. Toward the end, I was seeing 1-minute plus lag. I couldn’t even participate at that point. I was just watching things play out in front of me and hoped something didn’t aggro me 45 seconds ago and kill me that I wouldn’t know about for another 15 seconds. At this point I had put around 3 hours in and I couldn’t participate, so I gave up. I tried relogging only to keep seeing one minute’s worth of lag, so I just quit. I had given enough of my Sunday afternoon to an otherwise un-fun event, so I just left. I’m half frustrated that I didn’t stay because the rewards were so good, but at the same time my technical problems were so bad at that point, I can’t even be sure I would have been rewarded had I stayed.

Again, you guys did a lot right on paper and I like that you’re trying it. But honestly, you should have known about the rendering issue. You should have known that the “trial weekend” was only going to aggravate that situation. You should have had an idea that a one-time pickup event chest at the end was going to cause problems for people who ran into technical hurdles during the event.

I love your game and I won’t stop recommending it to friends, but a lot of the problems during the event you really should have known were going to happen. If you’re going to do something huge like this, you need to do it in instances until you work out lag and rendering issues which are commonplace in WvW.

Thanks again for making a great game and trying to make a great event. Sorry it didn’t work out.

You can get almost exactly what you’re describing by PvEing in the WvW area. There are dynamic events, quest chains, and the constant threat of being attacked by other players.

I was unaware that ArenaNet was opposed the the monetization of videos and totally agree with the OP. I love watching youtube videos of things like sPvP and totally believe that the casters deserve to be able to monetize their videos.

This subject is quite frankly make-or-break if ArenaNet is serious about making GW2 an esport. They simply cannot stifle the content creators in any way if they ever want the esports thing to happen.

Right now there is no incentive for me to spend gems to buy black lion keys to open the chests. I’d like to see some better rewards from the chests that will give me an incentive to see what’s inside them. Right now it’s generally some random boosters and I think a transformation item. A couple times I got another key. Although the short term transformations are kind of fun and quirky, they’re certainly nothing to get excited about.

I’d like to see things like mini-pets, rare dyes, town clothes, pvp weapon skins… stuff like that. I know you guys are incredibly opposed to “pay-to-win” which I totally agree with, but given the random nature of the chests it might not even be a bad idea to throw in a very low chance at a random exotic. It would just have to be rare enough so that it wouldn’t make any kind of financial sense to use gold to buy gems to get keys to open chests to get exotics to sell for more gold (that made sense, right?), but I don’t think it would cause an uproar if these chests were a little more worth it than they are. And let’s face it… we all like to gamble a little if there is at least some small chance of a payout (mystic forge, anyone?)

Not a one time deal, you can do it as frequently as you want (until they implement guesting, at which time you have to pay).

However, any points that your guild has banked (I think they’re called loyalty points?) are lost on a server transfer. However if you to transfer and transfer back (like to group with a friend on another server), the points will be there when you come back.

End Game Content, Where is it? Also locked map areas.

No, seriously, it’s for fun. sPvP is almost like a completely separate game with very little integration into the PvE part of the game. Inside of sPvP, you can get some cool looking armor and weapons to intimidate your opponents, but that’s about it.

Agreed. The chests are a fun novelty, but I’m not going to start getting keys unless they’re for a trivial cost. Maybe if they ran a sale for 50 gems each, I’d pick some up. 25 gems each would probably be my sweet spot where I’d just go for it.

Dynamic events. Whenever you see a dynamic event, join in. Even bronze participation or a failed event gives pretty good xp.
