I’m actually a fan of the more defensive feel of the Ranger’s greatsword. It’s different than everyone else’s greatsword and feels like a uniquely Rangery sort of use of such a large, cumbersome, generally un-Rangery weapon.

I like the evasion built into the autoattack chain – it’s harder to time it properly to deal with single large hits a’la boss whacks, but that’s not really its purpose. I use Counter and Hilt bash for those. The AA evasion, on the other hand, makes itself felt when I’m hip-deep in meanie-kittens and getting attacked on all sides.

That said, while I like it, I agree that it needs help. Swoop has some funky targeting issues that could use resolving, Counter is just weird and frankly kinda contradicts the weapon’s function – why, exactly, does a greatsword ranger want to kick his enemy out of his weapon’s reach? – and Hilt Bash has way too much cooldown for not really doing much. You can’t usually time it sufficiently to catch your pet’s big attacks anyways. The fact that said interaction is the only pet interaction bothers me.

I’d work the greatsword a little differently myself, though. Up the AA damage for the thing and keep its evasion. Swoop works – it’s a little boring, but it’s a nice long-range lunge with solid-if-unexceptional damage. Maul could use an extra stack of bleeding or two – it’s where the greatsword’s damage is supposed to be, so why is it so…meh? Still, mechanically fine if numerically a little blah.

What I’d like is for Counter’s knockback to flush itself. Instead, a successful counterattack gives the Ranger Protection for, say…five seconds. That’d give it a lot more flexibility – use it strategically to counter single large attacks, or hit it in a scrum, counter whatever pokes you first and get the Protection to help blunt the onslaught. I’d also like to see Crippling Throw either cut Counter’s recharge in half, as has been suggested, or do a good bit more damage. Right now about all it’s good for is finishing a running whatsit you don’t feel like chasing down or getting a bit of damage from a whiffed Counter. Neither of those is a task that should be encouraged.

As for Hilt Bash, if they insist on keeping the flanking thing, then I’d much prefer for it to be a stun in general and a knockdown when flanking. A 30s recharge for a one-second Daze that deals no real damage is steep, and it’s not honestly that much better as a stun. A knock, on the other hand, is absolutely worth trying for the flank to get, and at the same time getting the stun if you whiff it or don’t have time to flank isn’t too bad. The pet interact on that could, perhaps, change to Protection or Regen, to help emphasize the more defensive/controller-y aspects of the thing. personally, I’d like to see a Blind on it for the same reason – would let you exercise a lot of control for your 30s, effectively null-damage control skill, and make the playerwant to actually learn to use it well instead of just A.) throwing it out there because it’s a skill and why not, or B.) forgetting it exists.

I agree!! Travelling costs are WAY too high! Drains about 20% of the money I make! Either lower them BY A TON or add mounts!

I agree with OP. Greatsword needs a buff. I really love being able to use greatsword on my ranger but agree, damage is too low to use it.

A lot of complaint about heartseeker too, but A LOT of people fail to realize that a thief completely traited for damage and crit, completely set and jeweled for damage and crit, if heartseeker doesn’t crit it does between 1-2k damage depending on your health. Most of the time when you are getting dropped quick and see heartseeker spammed on you. You are 9/10 either not paying attention to your health before the spamming begun, or had 1 or more enemies in ADDITION to the thief beating on you from range.

You can test it if you don’t believe me, even as fully offensive build, if you do a single #1 dagger attack chain and then spam heartseeker, and even if the target does not dodge, 8/10 they will STILL not be below 40% hp. You will also have used up all of your initiative. There are quite a few classes out there that have MORE mobility then a thief that can do equal or more damage in the same time as a heartseeker spam.

Pistol whip, complaining about is just silly no offense. The only time it actually works is when you have quickness (could argue venom). Thats quite a cooldown… and being reliant on 1 single effect is NOT what the class is designed around. So if anything pistol whip needs to be buffed majorly in the activation department, even if the damage is toned down.

Pistol Whip needs to be BUFFED? LOL? It’s easy mode stun + almost 20k damage. GG.

Second, you’re not doing 1 attack chain then spamming heartseeker. All you gotta do is 15k crit backstab with assassins signet then spam heartseeker. gg dead in 2 seconds.

Thieves are extremely OP, and it’s obvious you are one and is just afraid of not being OP anymore.

Instead of replying childishly you could try and apply some factual math from in game to back up your opinion.

The stun is extremely small duration (1/2s) and the entirely ability has a high activation time (over 1s), so try dodging. The damage is maybe half of what you stated, so please provide proof of it doing around 20k and show you ACTUALLY having armor equipped.
Backstab for 15k? Even with assassins signet you are not going to get hit by a 15k backstab. Assassin’s signet is 150% damage increase on next attack NOT 200+%, not only would that mean they have to have auto attack disabled, but the signet has a COOLDOWN and this requires them to be in STEALTH. Them building around, again 1 effect with a cooldown this time being 2, entirely is kittening them in the long run. ANY class in the game can build around 1 cooldown and can do nice burst in 1v1 situations.

If you read what I wrote, I said I would have no problem toning down the damage of PW if the activation time was buffed majorly.

The thief is supposed to be the most mobile class, currently is not, and their damage is fairly lackluster unless a few cooldowns are popped and/or they have group buffs( if you compare their damage vs survivability), which again, the class is NOT supposed to be designed around

Right, that was uncalled for, just upset about thekittenthieves.

But really, today i’ve been 12k backstabbed, a lot of 5-7k heartseekers, and a 17k pistol whip. I wear medium armor and have 5 points in toughness and 25k HP. For that pistol whip, as soon as i tried to dodge, most of the damage had already been done..

Rangers don’t really have a lot of burst besides the long bow rapid shot. It’s mainly all slow overtime smaller attacks. Back on topic, we can be pretty tanky. Check this video out and keep in mind he only had 5 toughness and 10 vitality trait points.
