It baffles me why the writers decided that corruption (dragon or Nightmare Court) is a one-way street. The greatest stories are redemption stories, and there’s so much more room for interesting character development if it is possible (evem if almost impossible) to bring someone back from darkness.
Imagine Star Wars if the decision had been made that no one could ever be redeemed from the dark side of the Force. :P
This is actually an interesting idea. I like it. There are, though, some who are beyond redemption, like DE and DI.
How does this not seem feminine to you? Or do you have some other complaint about these characters?
This is a proper lesbian romance put into a song. One would take a bullet for her… she is not being religious, or preachy, just so full of love.
Don’t worry, you will see whole Tyria protecting the poor Sylvari from Nightmare court on anabolics. ;]
Yeah, I guess I just assumed season 3 would fill in the time till HoT perfectly. I just hope that my guess is wrong and HoT comes out sooner, or they do have something planned for the intern.
Well Jory & Kas can get married, while our toons can run various errands to make sure the wedding is a success, also we can go to a quest to restore Kas to her rightfull place among the nobles.

Well tbh, if you buy it for 13 laurels, which is ~ 15 gold, you might as well do the LS for ~25 gold.
Well I have enough laurels to choke a troll with them so losing 13 laurels is not an issue… otoh I had 400 crystals left after some purchase from earlier so not such a bit loss either. Most of the harm comes from suffering the Marjory motley crew around me.
BTW you can sell / buy laurels?
Could be, have to look into that.
Nothing about it in the wiki: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Azarr_Softhoof
Dunno, someone needs to confirm
kitten you are right. I didn’t know that.
If I got this right, your main gripe is that you have to pay 200 gems (if you haven’t unlocked for free) for LS episode 3, which mostly contains re-used content to get started on Mawdrey 2?
Well, turns out, you can get those ingridients from the centaur in Dry Top for a few laurels. So there’s no need to do it.
Sorry about the tinfoil hat.
Nope, I mean the seed. It is episode 2 IIRC. You must buy it to get the first seed.
(GODS I wish I hadn’t turned in silk at all, but at the time it was actually pretty worthless.)
I remember times when silk was under or slightly over 1 siver apiece.
Also Treaherne is one of the most emotionless and unsympathize character in the whole game. He never truly moan for anyone, thinking sacrifices is rational and reasonable and quickly move on.
Well yeah, he is. But this is, I believe, intentional, and since he feels like that, they did a good job on him. He should be a cold scholar and administrator, and not showing much emotions. He would not make a great drinking buddy, but I can easily imagine to cooperate with him. Why not. I also liked his dialogues.
3.Traeherne was also on one of these ships
I really hope we will have the opportunity to fight and maybe even kill him
Taherane was one of the NPCs I liked. But please give me a quest chain to slaughter Destiny Edge and Delaqua Investigators.
Hmmm…. maybe siding with ol’ Mordy would help me to achieve that? You can kill Logan and Eir, but do NOT touch my Zojja and Rytlock or I’ll have to kill you first >:O
Rytlock is a stupid warmonger, while Zojja is as arrogant as she is boring. Why do you want to spare these two? Besides, if my lord Voldermoth or Moldemort or what was his name again commands me, who am I to disobey?
But these two are negotiable, if Caithe dies. You probably haven’t play an Asura or Charr before.
Zojja actually is a very nice person, she’s just abit too sensitive and abit impulsive. But she recognize her mistake and willing to offer help all the time. (You can see it in your personal story if you choose golemancer as your story plot) She’s mean to Eir because she cares about her mentor too much. If you’re an emotional and sensitive person, you’d find Zojja’s reaction very natural. She’s also a true genius no less.
Rytlock is one of the coolest characters in game! Even the Charr highest rank leader respects him (You can see it in LS2) He’s determined, and very considerate of his comrades, that’s why he’s so mad at Logan!
How can you hate 2 of the best GW2 characters out there? Or did you simply don’t understand their lore and personality?
I just started my first Asura (and golemancer iirc) some time ago. I never played a charr and I do not plan to, since I find the whole military obsessed culture repulsive. So I know Rytlock and Zojja from the DE story only, and truth to say, I consider the DE unbearable bunch of drama queens.
But as I like asuras it can be that I will change my opinion on Zojja. Also compared to Logan, I admit that Rytlock is the better of these two.
Seeing how many people really dislike the main NPCs, the storywriters should consider if everything they do is OK. I played quite a few MMOs and a lot of single player CRPGs and never I experienced this. In some of the games, like FF or BaK I was really saddened to see some of the main NPCs die.

I’d rather enjoy the death of Marjory and her barbie doll with no personality.
Not gonna happen. Yknow why? Because she will most likely be the one to go for for Necros that want to learn how to (ab)use Great Swords, since she already is a Necro that uses a GS.
No. This is not gonna to happen because she is a personal projection of one of the storywriters.
@xXLuggXx
That happened, it was part of “the greatest fear” storyline.Anyway I think it’s quite likely that Mordremoth is the nightmare and those sylvari who are loyal to the dream and the pale tree are immune to Mordremoth (so all PC sylvari).
I’m affraid you are right.

Unless you are talking about the Mawdrey skin it was one of the worse ideas ever because the situation with the excess bloodstone dust shouldn’t be occurring in the first place.
You are right, but I think this is an intent. They for some reason love to have inbalace in resource accessibility.
Kinda sad that people are willing to go through content they don’t enjoy just because they get a shiny reward in the end.
Not exactly. I liked the gameplay – in most cases. I find it cheap however to resell already existing content (the charr events). Also I find it wrong if the game cheats agains me just to make it more challenging for me. If I can be knocked down from the cliff, the other guy should have the same disadvantage, unless he has wings for example.
And I hate the NPCs and I do not want to wait till they are done with their idle chatter.
Give me that skip button and I’m a happy man. I’m a casual player since we have a baby, and I do not have much time. I do not want to waste it on some anoying dialogues.
Let me congratulate. Mawdrey 2 is really the best thing you guys would invent.
Without it, I would NEVER pay these 200 crystals for the episode where I just replay common events in Iron Marches. Without it I would stay as far away as humanly possible from the Dry Top aka “I can kick you from the cliff and you can’t”. Without it I would NEVER suffer another line of Marjory <3<3 Kasmeer dialogues and kept miles away from the “one dumb male & 4 wonderfull females” group.
But I want that Mawdrey 2 and you got me.
But if you want me to buy the DLC, add a skip button to every dialogue and also let me skip the parts where I wait until the NPCs I’m forced to cooperate with, despite the fact I hate them with passion, are finished with their cute talk. There might be some people who actually like Majory, Kasmeer, Taimi, Rox and that male who can be pardoned for being male only because he is a son of allmighty Eir. But the rest of us need the skip button. Be fair. Let me have fun. And I will buy the DLC. If you tell me explicitly I will be allowed to skip every dialogue and cutscene in the game, no exceptions.
(edited by Fext.3614)
I am more than willing to help you with any of the story you want. I am like you and do it for the story and not hard core. So I feel you pain. Let me know.
Aren’t the story instances solo only?
@ punkinkatt
By the way I tried yesterday with an ele, fresh 80, not yet fully in exo gear, several pieces still rare, mixed soldier and zerk, and while most of the episode 1 was doable, I died twice during episode 2, before I had to stop. In full ascended gear it is really way easier.
Just bought the two parts you need to pay for, as I decided to grow mawdrey.
I really LONG for a possibility to say “HEY since I am the boss, stop wasting my time and move your kitten, we have a work to do. You can tell each other how magnificent you are later.”
I believe this can be implemented with ease, as some kind of a Next button for ingame dialogues. So the player who likes the NPCs and social interaction with them (rather among them) can wait and watch the motley crew to chat over and over, while the rest of us can go straight to the action.
Also, as a boss, I don’t know why I am bossed around. It should be my toon who decides the course of action, as it is now I’m rather an emloyee of the NPCs, who wait behind for me to do the dirty work. They should work like ranger’s pet, at least to hold some aggro, or heal me as I go. As it is now, their biggets asset is wasting my precious time.
Wow, you must be a really really bad player, if you can’t even fight this boss… I guess games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta or Demon’s Souls is unknown to you.
Oh, where are the good old times, where only gamers played games?
Games are something you should enjoy and relax with. It is really lame to attack somebody for having problems with some quest. If you can’t or won’t help, why to bother to react on the OP question?
. I’m left alone at the top to fight some kind of dragon. I have 14,233,144 tendrils attacking me all at once. Die repeatedly within the course of a mere 2 minutes. Almost all gear is broken, so continuing isn’t an option.
You must be doing something wrong, what is your character, level and equipment? I did it with rng, war and guar already and I believe it is beatable without much effort (save for the dialogues and cutscenes you cannot skip).
As for the loot, I would not bother. I just liked the gameplay (which was greatly spoiled by the story entries, cutscenes and dialogues). For loot I’d recommend farming Silverwartes, if you craft, and for relatively easy money grind AC (namely if you can use soldier gear).
Question:
will Destiny Edge and Delaqua investigators play major roles in the DLC plot?
Oh so you want Ascalon v2 in Divinity Reach? You know…personally i dont have anything against it. Lets wipe out humans for good.
Great idea! The plot would nicely tighten: to have charr occupants fight Jennah The Traitor (Logan’s head on a charr pike would look great, by the way), then possibly also push on Flame legion to attack charrs on a second front, while forging Separatist rebels into a hardcore guerilla under my bloody standard, together with Ascalon ghosts and the mad king, who would swear loyalty to me, then attack from behind, and raze Black Citadel to the ground. Finally there would be some strong and dark story worth playing.
But you can already fight Charr. They’re called the Flame Legion.
I can also fight sylvari. And I can fight charr in pvp or wvw, and these are not in Flame Legion. Does it have anything to do with a DLC content? I don’t think so.
I’m not very happy with sylvari being the dragon minions. I have nothing against the weed people. Let me fight against charrs. They are warmongering militant freaks whose ugly weapons of mass destruction and fortresses spoil the lovely land of Ascalon.
.yes we all see the unbelievable amount of affirmative action in the living story characters
Well if you mean the lesbian romance, this is not necessarily a bad thing. In ME1, for example, I really enjoyed the lesbian romance between my female character and an alien. And which is more important, it felt good, nice and natural.
The problem is poorly or naively written “affirmative action”, which is the case of the living story.
1: your characters are totally unlikable
Amen to that.
It is not like lesbians are “males in skirts”…
Or do you have some other complaint about these characters?
Pretty hard to put this into words, but let me try.
There is a wide range of quality of dialogues in the game. Sometimes I feel very comfortable with the characters and dialogues, sometimes it hurts.
The whole “Marjory – Kasmeer and the other lesser sidekics” stuff is the second cause.
Do you know Karl May? He was a popular German writer who was writing the typical “boy” stories about adventures in 19. century America and Arabia. He wrote about one main character, himself, nicknamed Old Shatterhand in his American adventures, and Kara Ben Nemsi effendi in Arabia. He presented his fantasies as the true stories.
His main hero is simply “the best at everything”. He is the strongets, wisest, best shot, best horseman, best scout, whatever, speaks fluently almost every language on the Earth and so on and so on. And he always wins. It is a contemporary macho fantasy blown up to the limits.
Obviously the author was somehow deprived and he dreamed about himself being the overpotent hero, and thus he wrote a series of books about his own glory, to escape from daily reality of a loser.
I have the same feeling about Marjory. She is always the real, ultimate “boss”, surrounded with followers and in fact she is the true hero of the whole story. Concerning Kasmeer, she is allowed to excel at feminine qualities to make herself a shinnier prize, but she is always a faithfull and submissive sidekick who needs protection of her mighty lover.
The whole story just tastes like a fantasy about personal grandeur of an author I’m not very comfortable with. The love story is not much about love, but about ownership.
Next time, please, let me roam with a band of crazy asuras kittening about their theories or skritt punks, stealing and scavenging to feed their kits, but I had enough of the mighty and shiny heroes like the Destiny Edge and Delaqua investigators.
Just my feelings about it. I understand you can feel differently.
(edited by Fext.3614)
However, I forgot to mention that I liked the living world from the game point of view. The story aside, I enjoyed the gameplay, instances, and that they managed to get us out of the typical drill.
Also I think Silverwastes are a succesfull response on the champ training.
If this is mated with a better storyline, NPC characters and dialogues (and they are quite able to write such, I enjoyed most of the main story where the DE was not involved) I’m a happy man.
And how many lesbians do you personally know?
These I know feel like typical women – as well as female bisexuals. And male bisexuals and gays who are behaving like normal men. I don’t say that women MUST behave some way. They just do, because it is what they are. Might be hard to explain, even if English is my native language.
But I can say I don’t know any lesbian who would look and behave like the typical male parodies from stupid movies or jokes (or the Marjory character). There may be some “real life” lesbians, who might feel guilty for what they are, and tend to behave like their haters expect, but I never met any.
I know it is late but I would greatly love to have playable skritt race.
I have very mixed feelings about it. In general the idea behind the story is OK – as far as I’m able to say. However the character design and the dialogues I do not like. It’s like I’m finally free from the annoying bunch of drama queens from Destiny Edge, and then I run into the Marjory and her sidekicks. I just can’t feel anything positive to my “friends” in the living story.
At least they should hire some lesbian writer, who lives in a happy relationship, to make the lesbian romance dialogues feel real! Marjory and Kasmeer feel and sound rather like a typical B-movie couple, a daredevil male + his naive busty blonde. It is not like lesbians are “males in skirts”, or gays are “disguised females dressed in pink”. Lesbians should feel more feminine, like any female which is comfortable with herself. I guess that the writer who did it was just imagining Marjory like a male character.
Lesbians are just females who love other females, like gays are males who love males. Simple as that.
Eh. The story is far from stellar, but I mostly just pay attention to the important plot points and get on with it. It doesn’t really bother me anymore. After all, it’s a T-rated game; there’s only so much they can get away with, legality-wise and complexity-wise.
Well it is not a rating issue at all. In fact you CAN play a Shakespeare with puppets and it will still be Shakespeare, if you are a good artist. My problem is with the dialogues and namely the Kasmeer – Marjory dialogues. It reads like a 13teen old boy virgin fantasy who believes that love is about finally getting laid, and the best imaginable lover is a busty blonde sex doll sidekick, smart as a brick (just check Kasmeer Meade lines). While Marjory is the other part of the fantasy, the responsible hero leader who is great, well, at anything. At least this was my main impression from the part where I was still trying to read it.
I don’t remember what was BG2 rating but Viconia romance dialogues were something. So you really do not need a mature rating to make it good.
I would like to be able to skip the dialogues and cutscenes and just go straight into the gameplay.
(edited by Fext.3614)
Please do something with the story. I stopped to read dialogues since I can’t really stand it any more and I’m getting allergic to my “friends” i.e. Rox, Braham, Marjorje and the other one, and the Tiame (or what is her name), I’m not sure if I hate them more than Destiny edge.
I like the game and I want to progress the living world, but the storyline and dialogues are really not on the same level like the gameplay. But I ran into funny small quests and interesting dialogues in the game so I guess this is just a problem of the main storyline design.
Didn’t you know there is no victory when being the bad guy. Just imagine if you could help koopa capture the princess and defeat mario. Then what? Would you feel like you won? For me its just not nearly as satisfactory as a story of heroism. Helping those from the bad guys that just want to oppress and destroy.
Well, yeah. And thats the very reason I want to decide for myself which side is good, and therefore support the anti-charr rebelion in Ascalon. Because, unlike the devs, I feel that charr are bad military freaks and the land belongs to humans.
If we did this on GW2, I’d totes be an Aetherblade. CROWD CONTROL FOR DAYS.
I think it would be great if they rather give people some faction specific skills upon joining. That LOTRO way was (or is) just an clever idea how to make PVE more challenging, it’s not the typical PVP. Might be a great idea to collect data from the players playing for monsters actions and improve the AI accordingly.
If you want ro play as the bad side, try playing a game called “Spec Ops: the Line” and see if you still prefer to always do the morally wrong decisions in all games.
Not the point, mate. The problem is that in my opinion the charr are the bad siude and Separatists are oppresed freedom fighters who want to free their homes from totalitarian military empire. Anyway there is a lot of games where you can play a bad side, even mmos, like SWTOR where you can go both light and dark side.
But I want to have similar choice in this game and it really should not be a technical problem. And after all it would add the faction PVP dimension which I kind of anticipated. Well the game is called Guild Wars, remember?
To reflect on the “race” thing: my actual preferences are Asura > Sylvari > Norn > Human > Charr. So not it has nothing to do with racism or human superiority. Why I dislike charr I already said. And their ugly structures are really something which does NOT belong to Ascalon.
About the main storyline: nothing really prevents you from reasoning with any faction you like and make them a part of the antidragon coalition. Well the problem might be with Svanir, iirc they kind of worship the dragon. Anyway possibility to have some other characters as the coalition leaders would be nice, too.
It might be even the main character. You don’t have to follow somebody’s order, your staff members would give you options… easy.
Well it’s not much about races and non-humans. The other nonhumans did not assault and occupy human lands. And I don’t like charrs. They are way too much into a military parody, and they remind me of former Third Reich or former East block states from Cold war era, it was “almighty army first, people then”, too. I’m just allergic to this.
Just face it, charrs are war obsessed monsters who came and occupied human lands, murdering the original inhabitants on the way. And my character, who is a human, should support them and hear them boasting “killing these humans feels like the good old times” and “we killed thousands of them that was so good” etc., ? Just try some Ascalonian quests. It’s disgusting.
But if we all take the zergling role, then there is no need for a trinity! Just brute force all the things!
There is no trinity in the real combat, and I think the clever strategist wins the battles not the brute force (although the brute force helps a lot). We are just used to trinity way too much.
The problem we may have here is that the enemies are still very much trinity like. Trinity typicaly works with a big and mighty boss which the tanks keeps busy while the dps kills it and healers keeps tank alive.
A no trinity game should rather support something like a numerous enemies of rather normal strength against a warband of players.
To the original question: absolutely not. It is the trinity what bores me to death and to make a MMO game without it was a very good idea. There is a lot of trinity MMOs so possibility to play one without it is indeed a very welcome.
If you want an excellent trinity game, try TSW, if you must have a high fantasy setting, then AOC, even if the latter is rather an unlimited trial much like SWTOR, the failed attempt to imitate WOW
Is it possible to implement a chance to play for the “bad” (or lets say rather politically incorrect) side in areas where are some factions fighting?
For example, as a human character I would like to join the separatist rebellion agains charrs and free Ascalon. But I can’t since the game decides which is my side in the conflict.
I can imagine to see the charrs as enemy characters, and use separatist camps as bases instead of charr camps, and maybe even have a chance to havoc pvp other players who would play for the charr side.
I believe this might add an interesting game experience.
A good idea. I would love to see that.
However there is one drawback: I doubt there would be enough people. At the end of the LA event, people were already bored and almost nobody was doing the quests and there was even not enough people on the knights.
So I think that the archived events would be most likely abandoned.
But thinking about fractals, what about do make a fractal for every event, or rework the events into dungeons, or raidlike instances for numerous groups?
What about to do something constructive? I can imagine some crafting Living Word event where the players with crafting skills would use the skills to rebuild some destroyed city or something… or maybe to build some device to launch an counterattack on enemies, say some giant airship or so.
There could be some combat involved, too, like fighting strong mobs for access to nodes with event specific materials needed for the construction (something like in WvW).
Players might also get crafting materials as reward, and improve their crafting skills while helping on the event.
Since devs love refugees, the plot might be about creating a gigantic airship needed to evacuate people from some endangered land and it might continue with another event where the players would escort the refugees to the airship landing zone… or something like that, and then to help them to create some kind of a base and weapons for them and finally to support them to win their land back.
Fast forward a few updates, and the whole thing has seemed to slip into rapid fire and I can’t keep up – the whole story doesn’t even make sense to me anymore and I’m totally lost. I log in and Lion’s Arch is destroyed, and I’m in the ruins with no direction or explanation, and people are yelling “red, blue” etc. in map chat and I have no idea what is happening.
Furthermore every single expansion has had a pretty cinematic, and then it thrusts you into a zoned area where if you’re not in a zerg you are instantly dead, there is no explanation and everyone has already done everything and has the boss on repeat. There is virtually nothing you can do alone, and everything is one giant zerg after another.
…etc.
Well what you are saying is that you personaly are uninformed and unable to find out what is happening. However, other players managed so I don’t think it’s a problem of the game. There is a lot of ingame hints and instructions, and if this is not enough, use Google, my young padawan.
I really don’t understand what are you complaining about. That you can’t do things alone? This is a MMO – which means teamplay.
My point of view, Living Story is not in general a bad thing – on the contrary. What I dislike are the main characters, plot and dialogues in the LA living story, but that’s another tale.
Anyone tired of having these idealistic “My Little Pony” types leading us around?
Hell yeah. Well My Little Pony is a class above Destiny Edge and Queen Jennah… not speaking about types like Keeper Jonez, agent Spire and others. .. kitten I can’t say that there is a NPC I like.
Some time ago I decided to criticise the story and leading npcs in this game. I did the mistake saying some bad things about the story devs and my topic was moved to the trash.
OK – I understand that personal attack are not very welcome, so this time I will talk only about the story and the npcs. I geuss we are still allowed to criticise this.
I like this game. I know that every thread which is about some criticism starts with this boring line but I mean that. I like the idea to do something… different. No trinity, different quest system, even the failed attempt to remove grind, that all I like.
And I hate the story, dialogues and the non player characters. This is something what makes the game much worse. I’m just not sure if the dialogues and characters are more like a B-movie screenplays, South American romantic telenovels with 1000+ episodes or Harlequin books.
Please stop doing this. It hurts like hell.
Queen Jennah, The Destiny Edge, Marjory and Kasmeer duo, Braham and Rox, so very cold quaggans in the refugee camp, etc., etc., worse and worse and yet even more bad. And we are not allowed to skip this stuff!
Please no more of the “Jory? (hiccup) Jory! (hiccup) Oh sweet Dwayna” trash. No, no, no!
Well it is quite possible to develop good lesbian romance. Every second shoujo anime has a good one.
You can make a good military / army /war atmosphere with commanders who feels like commanders and not megalomaniac psychos. Mass Effect 1 is an example.
You can write a witty dialogue. Read that old dusty Shakespeare, he is still a number 1 in that.
You can make a cute yet good plots and characters enjoyable by several age categories – just check How to train your dragon or Kungfu Panda. Kids and parents have fun and nothing feels pathetic.
You can make believable and strong female characters / leaders. So many examples out there… anime Crest of Stars series has almost totally swapped gender roles and it works and feels good. The female commanders are BOTH females AND commanders.
You can make a good queen which feels like queen, not like a cheap hostess playing one on a children charity party.
And so on, and so on. Yeah I know, there is a lot of other and maybe better examples I forgot to mention (feel free to add them if you feel like that), but this is not important.
What is important – this game needs a better story, better dialogues and realistic and acceptable NPCs. Please consider investing into that.
Or if it’s not possible, let us to skip the cutscenes. Some people (I guess the authors for sure) may love Destiny Edge and company and live with them every heartbeat but others feel differently.
Thinking about sweetie Marjory, sweetie Kasmeer, and buddies Braham and Rox, I would rather team up with Scarlet if only she was not Caithee’s lesbian ex…
