Why Are People Crying So Much About Thief?

I fought a thief 3x and lost because I couldn’t target him. I read a lot of posts in here defending the thief, saying nothing of value (ex: you just need to know how to fight him).

Please explain how you beat a good thief as a mesmer when you cannot see him and you have no aoe?

Mesmer is one of the easier classes to handle thieves. Just let your phantasms/clones do the work. And when they’re near dead, they’ll hide. But before you do that, shatter. They’ll chase the thief down and bomb him.

And you can invisi too… just not as well.

But still, against a “good thief”. Simple: you don’t. You just mind your own business and go where you were going. And defend yourself while going.

Why Are People Crying So Much About Thief?

Grumpy.8365

Well, since you say you’re a bunker guardian on tier 2, obviously you don’t see the issue with thieves. The thieves won’t target people with aegis for starters because it’s their opener that deals the most damage, directly and indirectly.

Roaming thieves are an issue only in lower tiers. I’d say at about half tier and below. If you get up in high tiers, roamers become fewer an fewer because they’d run into a zerg all the time and get wiped. It’s just not fun. In lower tiers, you can roam around the entire map and not face a single zerg. The roaming style actually becomes something playable, common and useful.

Imagine you’re running around by yourself. Trying to catch up to a zerg, or w/e reasons. Then out of no where, a thief pops up. Backstabs you and takes out like 5k of your health. 1/3 is gone… Maybe they had Basilisk Venom when they attacked you. Just running by yourself in a relatively safe area, chances are, you probably weren’t paying much attention to the game. You can’t really move or do anything at this point. Thief lands a few more hits on you and bam. You’re downed.

Heck, it’s a lot worse if you’re an up level. They might even 1 hit ko you. Because if they see a green arrow, it means it’s a nice target.

Let’s say you’re not a low level. And lets say you can react in time. That’s what stun breakers are for after all. So, you managed to almost kill the thief? He disengages. Unless you’re fighting a really crappy thief, chances are, they can do this quite easily. Then, from stealth, the thief comes back. Then you beat him again…. and when almost dead, disengages. And this repeats. 5 times… Heck, some thief once even engaged me like 10 times before you finally got inside somewhere. By this time, you’re freaking annoyed because he’s preventing you from getting somewhere. Maybe he gets lucky next time, maybe you’re on cool down for something. You lose.

PVE: high population server, where you can still find friendly people to run a quick dungeon, Fractal and with a bit more difficult for personal storylines.

PVP: medium population, with a full hand of excellent sPvPers.

WvW: high population, server with small queues to enter (5 to 10 minutes the most) and only during the reset day (Friday). In this content you can always find action and some drama by reading in global chat more opinions and calls to arms per minute than quaggans guarding noodles!

I would say it’s more like…

PvE: low~medium – Whenever I guest on other high pop servers, I’m often surprised at how many people are in LA spamming dungeons and stuff. Or farming in areas like orr…
PvP: very low – We have virtually no pvpers ranked in the top 100 comparatively to other servers.
WvW: medium – Clearly… as tier indicates. Having a queue only on reset day is definitely not something that’s “high population”.

Ultimately, we’re in the bottom half in terms of population count as indicative of population count on world selection as you can often see “medium” for borlis pass whereas half of the other servers in NA rarely – if ever – reach anything other than very high.

I’d really like to see something like a 4~8 way free for all map in wvw. Sort of like eternal but free of current tier sets, just their absolute rankings. This way, you aren’t as tier locked as badly. T2 can play with T1 and etc. I know the numbers don’t necessarily match up, so, we could even let lowest tiers merge into higher tiers for that map only. This way they get to experience big zergs too.

large guild looking to move

Grumpy.8365

I think t6&7 has gained some stability and doesn’t really need a big guild to tilt them off.

T5 is where it’s really outmatched right now. BP and AR are outmanned anytime EB decides to push one map. BP & AR can’t really get a zerg greater than 30 or so except reset night simply because there isn’t that many of them. Most of the time the “big” zerg is only about 20 people large. So when EB pushes with a map queue, there’s nothing to stop them. Because of this, EB will likely move up a tier, but CD or SI that’s going to drop down from T4 is going to be exactly the same. They’ll still out number BP or AR.

If AR is out of the OP’s list, I really think BP’s pretty much the only option left.

And for the love of god… stop suggesting t1~4.

On borlis pass last night, we had the part 2 of grenth and failed at <30s. I think it’s possible, but the biggest problem is that everyone needs to know what they’re doing and working with each other. And the obvious problem with that is pug doesn’t coordinate. Having a commander lead things in temples help a lot (commander here).

Between shield & dodge, I was on melee range of grenth priest the entire time with exception of dodging aoes — often being alone with grenth. I had mostly zerk armor (chest & legs were knights) during this, so I do find the first part clearly viable as long as you time things well. But there’s no way everyone ran grenth enough to know what to expect when. In most part, I do complete part 1 of grenth more than I fail.

Part 2, the defense, is where it’s really really —-—-. Especially when you have lot of people. The mob will kill jonez in 1~3 hits and it’s lot harder to keep them off of jonez entirely than part 1. If you see a mob near jonez, and you don’t have a CC ready (b/c clearly lot of people carry this in pve…), you lost. Lot of people will also unintentionally pull the mobs to jonez and it’s game over. So a single person messing up will yield a complete loss for the entire group.

TL;DR: Play it like WvW. Carry CC’s and control the mobs’ paths.

My very simple suggestion is this: Make defense targets scale with the mobs. Not just the mobs.

Would I regret a Necro?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Grumpy.8365

Grumpy.8365

I can’t help but heavily disagree with above posts (Kravick) in some of the areas.

1. Necro can carry the most AoE in their bar. Namely, 13. This is significantly more than anyone else and thus naturally able to do most AoE damage. This makes them best farming class in areas like orr where you get clumps of 5+mobs. A typical setup for something like this is well build. You can trait for power or a hybrid of power/condi (carrion). Against a structure… um… you don’t want to waste wells and dagger reaches really short. You suck at that.

You can do execute in a burst. Well x3 > staff skills 1~4. By the time you finish casting, most mobs do die off. If it still isn’t enough Life Transfer (from death shrowd). Or you can use them in slow pace to just tag every mob to get loot from everything.

2. Necros do have mobility skills.
Locust swarm from warhorn.
Spectral walk on utility for 33% boon with ability to teleport back.
Signet of the Locust on utility for perm 25%.
Flesh Wurm on utility for necrotic traversal (teleport).
Trait for increase in speed while using dagger.
But yes, we do have relatively fewer mobility skills.

3. In PvP, one of the top currently ranked player runs a necro that’s not a support at all. Offensive power build. So, it’s clear it’s not stuck with support role.

On the other hand, I do agree with above poster on that.

1. It’s not the best dungeon class as of current meta. Who knows, maybe it’ll change. After all, gw1 changed in such a way that people don’t mind taking 8 necro party in hard mode… rather preferable.

2. It is not a very good solo/roaming in wvw. But doesn’t mean you can’t flip camps solo. (Assuming you are skilled enough)

3. They do make very good party support in wvw. Marks everywhere… The red circles are pretty good at controlling enemy crowds. Staff5 (fear) is also one of few skills you can make people go away in distance (maybe only?). This makes you pretty good when enemies are against cliffs.
Also, plague’s blind… That thing is awesome in zergs. You just perma-blind (sorta) the enemy zerg and yours will have a fairly easy time killing them off. And you’re extremely strong while in plague, so no fear of death during that either.

And one point about what OP said. You aren’t bound to any class for PvP. You can switch on the fly if you don’t like it or if it’s the utterly worst class for pvp. You always have max gears and max level.

Power VS Crit Dmg

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Grumpy.8365

Grumpy.8365

Depends, here the forumla.

Your expected damage is: Expected damage = Base damage * (((0.50 + Critical Damage / 100) * (Critical Chance / 100)) + 1)

We know you have 50% chance. So…

Expected damage = Base damage * (((0.50 + Critical Damage / 100) * 0.5) + 1)

Now your question is +100 base damage or +10% crit damage. That separates the question to two formulas and which is greater?

Base damage * (((0.50 + (Critical Damage 10) / 100) * .5) + 1)
(Base damage
100) * (((0.50 + Critical Damage / 100) * .5) + 1)

If your base damage was 2500, and had 0 crit damage increase previously.

2500 * (((0.50 + 10 / 100) * .5) + 1) = 3250 (crit)
(2500+100) * (((0.50 + 0 / 100) * .5) + 1) = 3250 (power)

It’s same! So, this is your root at 0 original crit.

or if power was a very high 3500
4550 (crit)
4500 (power)

or if power was a very low 1500
2000 (crit)
1950 (power)

Just fill in your stats and see which is higher expected damage.

Relationship of stability, stun & immobilize

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Grumpy.8365

Grumpy.8365

I’m rather confused on these skills boon/conditions and their relationships.

Stability is supposed to prevent: knocked down, pushed back, launched, stunned, dazed, floated, sunk, or feared. (copied from wiki)

I noticed that immobilize is not in the list. But stun is.

But when you use skills that break stun like blink or shake it off, it removes immobilize. Also, the icon for break stun appear to be immobilize icon that’s broken.

And some people seem to sometimes block/resist my immobilize. This may partly be my imagination though.

So, my questions are:
1. How does “break stun” break “immobilize”?
2. If break stun is supposed to break immobilize, why doesn’t stability prevent immobilize?
3. Why is it called break stun when it breaks immobilize too? And frankly, don’t know if it actually breaks stun.
4. How does one block/resist immobilize? (other than shield)

Thanks.

I get WAY too much leather and cloth, a bunch of metal and not nearly enough wood. I’ve had to throw stacks upon stacks of cloth/leather into the gaping maws of merchant NPCs everywhere because I’ve got full stacks of both bolts/scraps/sections/squares.

Then… why not sell it on the TP? you’d make much more money that way…

WRONG. It is controlled by privately owned banks (like the federal reserve). As someone else said in this thread it is backed by nothing.

It is printed out of thin air, which causes never ending inflation every time more is printed. But that isn’t the real kicker…

Governments (or rather the people) pay interest to “borrow” this money (which is worthless). Who owns these “central banks”? Good luck finding out.

Who was the last president to mess with the federal reserve and to put out money/certificates backed by something REAL (silver)?

I will give you a hint. He signed Executive Order 11110.

It’s not backed by nothing. It’s backed by the government. The other poster didn’t say nothing either. You’re the only one saying that. There’s a law saying that you have to accept it as currency.

Unless you view government to be non-existent “nothing”.
But yes, it’s not backed by a commodity. But that’s a big difference.

The federal reserve system is not entirely private. It has components which are both public and private. It’s private in the sense that the executive choices made by the federal reserve doesn’t have to be approved by the president or congress but the federal reserve works under the congressional oversight. Additionally, the president and the congress gets to choose the board members of the federal reserve. So, it’s wrong to think they can do whatever they want free of government. Also, USA isn’t the only country in the world.

The infinite inflation is not a factor of whether or not there’s a backing commodity, but the question of whether or not the function of the money printed is converging. If you back it by a commodity, it must converge because there’s a finite amount of any commodity in the world. But if you regulate the money printed to eventually converge, it won’t have infinite inflation. Take bitcoins as example. bitcoin generation converges and thus once it reached a certain point, it can never inflate w.r.t. itself (which has it’s own problems too).

Lastly, I don’t know what your point is to bring up J.F. Kennedy. Perhaps you’re making a fallacious point that a “great” president always does what is right forever.

Backing a currency by a commodity (gold/silver/etc usually) is actually a poor choice now because it converges too early for the current economy. It made a lot of sense before. But we’re in an economy where there’s software and similar things that’s made out of thin air. But it’s of value and it can be made infinitely. Something like gold cannot keep up with that. So doing such would stifle the economic growth and it now actually makes sense to have a currency with infinite inflation. All a stable currency needs is a stable country with a responsible government (or governing body) to sustain that currency. Problem is that we seem to have met neither with the USA.

in Crafting

Grumpy.8365

Because it’s a game. :P

In the real world, gold coins are ALWAYS given a printed dollar value lower than the price of actual gold. So the purpose of the coin is to merely guarantee you of at least the stated value. But it would be no real loss to melt that gold coin into gold bars. Conversely there’d be no change in value when you make your gold bars into blank coins or official coins (other than going to jail for counterfeit).

So, if you had a $1000 gold coin, it’s likely worth $3000 in pure gold.

In the real world anyway. ^^ (of today!)

Statistically speaking, to get an accurate value, you’d need to salvage at least ~500 random or sequential samples to call it sound. Then you can achieve roughly 95% accuracy with 99% confidence (and hoping I did my math right).

LFk seems to have done that, and kudos to you. Actually, with binomial distribution, about 13,179.4 salvages are required to give a 99% accurate and 99% confident reading of the salvage rates. Though, I highly doubt you recorded your 10k salvages, or that you even managed to count to 10k manually, if you really did, then your answer would be the only credible one and would likely equal to that of the one written in formula by the developers.

If you haven’t salvaged that much and talking about how it’s this or that, you need to go salvage more.

So, if you want to compare and say method X works better than Y, or it works worse than before, you need to record ~500 samples with one method X/time without bias and then repeat with the method Y/new time. Only then, we can credibly say it is better or anet changed it or something.

Suggestion for Community: Better PC?

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: Grumpy.8365

Grumpy.8365

1) Better computer and BSoD has little relationship. Rather, physically broken computer and driver issues and BSoD have relationships. If you run out of ram, we have something called swap. Things aren’t going to immediately get BSoD. And OSes are designed so that if it does run out of vram, no more memory is allocated to the program requesting it. So, GW would crash, not your OS.

2) I’m sure they’ll already do this if they have FPS issues.

3) Minimum specs, by definition means minimum required to run the game in a stable environment. That is the definition. Yes, it doesn’t mean it will run it well, but it means it will run it. Naturally, it means you shouldn’t need more to play. Otherwise, that’s false advertising and the buyer would be entitled to a full refund.

4) Connection: Highly doubt any player can do anything about this.

+) People are not rich enough to just buy a new PC when ever they feel like it. Let’s stop tackling all the problems from the rich man’s PoV.

+) Decrease in FPS can be caused by latency. The two are not completely independent of one another.

+) Since GW2 doesn’t even have oceania/asia servers, people from there are naturally going to have terrible connection. This can be caused by a slew of issues and as they have more hops and distance, there’s even more chance for them to have hiccups in the connection.

The part that you’re doing wrong is the part where you chose to do a MM. Minion AI is so horrible, it’s not worth using it.

And why is the minion AI is so horrible?
It was made that way.

I don’t even know where to start…
Often, they don’t attack your target. Sometimes even with a full MM bar, not a single one of them will attack your target.
Sometimes, they just go run off and attack a yellow mob for no reason.
Sometimes, they don’t follow you and do their own things.
Sometimes, they’re so far away and not catching up with you, they don’t even appear on the minimap if fully zoomed. Don’t worry about it catching up, it’ll just die.
Your minions have zero dodging or dispersing or formations. They’ll often clump up and die all together by a single aoe. There goes your entire skill bar.
Blood Fiend, being the ranged often attacks first and becomes the target in pve. There goes your healing (I would still find it not viable even after recent buff to blood fiends).
Your minions being targeted by mobs will often cause you to run slowly too since you entered battle. So, they make utterly horrible exploration companions especially combined with the above mentioned random attacks. Though 1 flesh golem sometimes helps when running to divert attacks to the minion in a really thick mob area.

Minions aren’t even that good compared to gw1 either.
You can’t heal them.
The max minion damage output if far worse than gw1 comparatively. If you jumped someone in gw1 with full minions, they’ll often lose. If you jumped someone in gw2 with full minions, you’ll lose.

So really how is the Necro?

in Necromancer

Grumpy.8365

I only have one level 80 character and it’s a necro. So, I can’t speak comparatively as well as others. But, from a single skew view point, I find them perfectly fine.

- Just few days ago out of 5 sPvP games, I did 5 MVPs with my necro (I can’t bring up any more recent as I didn’t hit spvp again since then due to exploring LS and time).
- I do DPS perfectly fine, in AoE with wells. It’s a huge damage — especially in PvE.
- I think necros make best farming class as they can literally fill 12 of the 15 skill bars with AoE attacks. And then you got another aoe with death shroud. Between the 13 of those aoe skills, you never need to wait for a cool down to do an aoe attack on a mob.
- Necros have huge survivability. I don’t think every single class needs to just do glass cannons, I don’t know why you’d want to.
- Necros actually do very very well against short burst damage characters because of death shroud. Just hit it in panic and let them waste their skills. By the time you come out of it, they got nothing and you still got 2 dodges left.
- Necros have the best condition removal. And it’s tremendously helpful in parties. Especially dungeons with annoying conditions.
- I can take on as much as 10+ mobs in Orr solo. Best I’ve done and lived is a ~30 mob plus a champion (the event was bugged and spawned a huge number, wasn’t in Orr though).
- In PvP, you can drop most players in 10 seconds. Just check the builds in this forum for well bombs.
- We can precast a lot thanks to marks. Put them down ahead of time, after getting triggered, hit it again. Combined with BiP, you can put 10k+ of bleeding damage on them in 1 second.

At the end of the day, I don’t see what the problem is…

Oh, one huge negative…. Hitting objects… >.> Takes forever. I usually carry a dagger for it, but can’t switch in battle as I already use the 2 weapon slots actively.

And yes… minions suck, vamp is pointless.

Even if the consortium chests weren’t random, I’d still NOT buy them. None of the loot seems very desirable. And I HATE random to begin with! It’s a double negative points for me to actually buy them.

I agree with Magikker, the cash shop is just so much less polished than the rest of the game. And the strange part is, it continues to be dull in comparison.

Whats the best and worst gem shop item?

I personally like to buy armor skins. :P But, I hate all the ones on the gem shop except maybe the medium armor (krytan). But, I don’t use medium armor. I got some clothes too though. So, seems like I’m an exception.

Skins > Char slot > bag slot > bank slot > the rest.

Dont use them, that was my solution.

I’m with this guy…

Though, I still tend to use flesh golem often. No real good elite skill to use on a casual basis. Using skill sometimes helps, but not always.

My Proposal

I know there are a ton of posts in this forum with regards to this topic, but in hopes that ANet actually reads this forum, I’d like to post my own proposal to fix the rampant issues that exist in GW2.

I see the base of problem in this game currently being two things which are really closely tied together: bots and gold sellers. Normally, I’m on the other side of these issues (defense of game company on action vs bots/gold sellers), because I find the bots and gold sellers to be nothing more than a red herring — they look like the source of the problem because it’s in your face, but their impacts are rarely too small in the big picture. But as I’ve witnessed personally in guild wars 2, there are lot of bots, and it often feels like bots sometimes out-populate real players, especially on unpopular maps. Sometimes it would be so bad that I’d see over 30~40 bots in a single map and a single digit of human players. They’re there 24/7 and days after I’ve reported them; a force much greater than humans.

As it currently stands, gold sellers out-price gem to gold by roughly 4 to 1 as far as I’ve seen. In other words (in example numbers), if a gem to gold will net you 10 gold for $10, the same $10 will get you 40 gold at gold sellers. I’m sure they’re having a good business selling these gold and goes into a cycle of heavier investment for them to sell more gold and farm more via any means, including bots and stealing accounts.

I believe this disparity exists and continues to widen because gems are worthless. And while ANet keeps on claiming that the gem to gold ratio is determined by supply and demand of the players, they often seem to forget that ANet is not free of neither supply or demand. So while it’s true that gem prices are from supply and demand, to say that ANet has no control over their price is simply wrong.

If I were supplied $10 worth of gems, I’d be much more inclined to convert these gems to gold than to keep it as gems even at a huge loss due to fees (which also hinders gem/gold trade, but that’ll be for another day). There’s nothing in the gem store that I really want. And even if I did, it doesn’t cost that much to get it. Gold on the other hand has countless usages. All the top gears also require a huge amount of gold. There’s a reason to have gold and a lot of it. There is few reason to have gems and virtually none to get a lot of it.

So, my proposal is actually very simple. Add more stuff to the gem store. A lot more, and make some of them really expensive, for the sake of making the value of gems equivalent to gold, or at least close to. Then more people will convert their gold to gems, then gem to gold prices will also increase naturally. Eventually, the difference between the gold sellers and the TP will decrease and motive to buy from them will decrease. Wasn’t that the very purpose of allowing real money transactions in the first place?

As it stands today, gems cannot realistically compete with gold because the supply isn’t that much in demand. ANet should compete with the gold sellers and win, not simply try to regulate. Because ultimately, the market forces are much stronger than any regulation. Until ANet can realistically compete versus gold sellers, until ANet significantly improves on their regulation; gold sellers will continue to exist, and they will thrive. And the players and the game economy will suffer because it will become more and more impossible to achieve our goals because the prices inflate much faster than we can possibly earn.

Thanks for reading.
