God I hope not, because it’s not a root it’s a 400yd leap, just because -YOU- leave it on auto cast doesn’t mean the players who don’t should be punished for your inability to adapt.

Inability to adapt…to crappy mechanics? That nobody else in the game is forced to deal with? Puh-lease.

I think it’s more of the fact that I don’t want:

1. To mash the 1 key all day when nobody else has to.
2. To give myself Carpel Tunnel Syndrome.
3. To knowingly put myself at more risk (yes, even with Auto-Attack disabled – because it still roots you) by using the weapon that I prefer.
4. To fly into another mob that is standing there un-agro’d due to poor ability queuing/lag.
5. The inability to move my character/dodge while attacking.

There’s a whole host of reasons, it’s common sense really. Ask any other random Ranger. You’ll get a variation of at least a few of these points, I’m sure.

They’ve actually said the sword is working fine, and there’s nothing wrong with it, so I highly doubt anything is going to be done which is good.

This is part of my original question – has someone officially said that it’s working as intended? I haven’t seen anything that says it is (or isn’t). If it is, then so be it (whether I like it or not), but I’ve never seen anything to say that the ‘rooting effect’ (even if that’s not the primary purpose) is intentional. If you have a link to where it was said, that would be great.

I haven’t seen anything of the sort. However, even if they think it’s working fine, it’s not like it couldn’t be changed. They change and tweak things all the time that they thought at one time were “working fine.” Anyone who played GW1 (or any other MMO really) can attest to that fact. It’s called…gasp…balancing.

This is why many of us post in these threads telling people everything is fine. We’re worried we’ll lose those animations to placate people that should probably be playing something else. 1h sword root is not a bug, you cannot dodge/move out of any leaps and 1h sword has 2 in its auto attack chain. If that bothers you why not play greatsword or a different class? There are plenty of us that love one handed in its current form and don’t want to see it changed to something else as a solution.

If the devs want to make us able to interrupt leaps that’s fine, but calls for changing the animations entirely are not cool for those of us who run a sword ranger as our main and love it.

Clearly, everything is not fine, just looking at the ratio of posts here within 1 day is an indication of that.

Personally, I know several Rangers, both Guildies and just other friends who tried Sword, liked it, but stopped using it entirely – purely because of the root effect. Don’t sit there and tell me “everything is fine.” Which brings me to my next point.

I knew there would be one person who would be emotional about their precious animations changing, if they even did change them. FYI, leaps are already interruptible to some degree because you can be knocked down whilst flying through the air as it is. Regardless, you are in the [probable] minority 1-2% that cares about fluff more than actual gameplay. Therefore, your opinion is taken lightly, by me and probably anyone else that actually cares about gameplay and improving Quality of Life for Rangers (ya know, what they are supposed to be focusing on with the class right now).

Maybe I should be playing something else you say? You know that’s funny. Ranger is my 4th character, I have 3 other 80’s, and 2 more lowbies, so you really don’t need to tell me to play another class. I’d rather continue on my current Ranger character without crappy mechanics forced down my throat on my weapon of choice. I haven’t had this issue (because it doesn’t exist) with any other class or weapon combo, either. Maybe you are the one that should try another class – it helps in making observations and suggestions when it comes to balance.

Why don’t I use a Greatsword instead, you say? Uh, well, because I’d rather use a Sword – without dumb mechanics that no other class (or weapon set) has to face. Because GW is supposed to be a game where I can play however I want instead of being pigeonholed into using certain builds or weapons. At least that’s whats been advertised to us by Arena.net.

You sitting there telling me to play another class, or use a Greatsword, etc. is a perfect example of the anti-freedom Arena.net is trying to avoid, or claims to.

I wouldn’t mind a self-root if the second chain does a small leap backward to evade if the target is not moving.

It would really make PvE MH sword more fun.

I for one would, considering you already have evades on Sword #2 and #3. Adding another to #1 is overkill and still wouldn’t justify the stupid rooting mechanic.

Besides, an auto leap backwards..heh..good luck fighting near the edges of anything, where you will either fall off a cliff, leap into a wall, etc. And just think about the accidental agro you would get in places where mob density is high. ;P

I agree that this mechanic should be examined and changed, because it just seems…well…unnecessary. Signet effects (both passive and active) should always be applied immediately to your pet, regardless of whether you just swapped them out in combat, etc.

It’s not the animations it’s the mini leaps. So if you fix the problem you lose swords ability to stay on a juking strafing target. Then everyone who lacks skill would be here complaining about the DPS nerf as they no longer stayed on target on autopilot.

The auto-attack cripples the target with the 2nd strike in the chain. So, if you really can’t stay on target due to not being auto-glued to them…then that’s a personal problem I think. In fact, the current [short] cripple from the 2nd strike is pretty useless because you are glued to your target anyways.

I don’t see why they can’t just change the leaps to not close the distance between you and the target (+ remove the root of course). You should already be in melee range when you start the auto-attack. Closers in the middle of the chain seem superfluous, especially considering the the free cripple you get…and often times actually get you into trouble. Ever killed a mob and then your 3rd strike in the auto-attack leaped you into a seperate, un-agro’d mob? I sure have.

Minimally, they could just change the cast bars to be breakable when you move/dodge. Like any other ability in the game with a cast bar. That wouldn’t really be a proper fix (since you still wouldn’t get actual freedom of movement while auto-attacking) but at least you could then dodge roll away from some attacks…now, I do NOT want to see a half-azz fix like that – I am just throwing that out there for comparisons sake.

Issue still exists, and was not fixed in 12/14 patch.

Please fix this game breaking bug. It affects all Rangers who want to use a sword.

Just look at how many Rangers just in this post won’t use a sword (a few still do, but knowingly gimp themselves) simply because of the crappy rooting mechanic of the auto-attack.

Isn’t the 3rd attack where he jumps up to kick?
as in i can kinda see why you’d shouldn’t be able to roll away with one foot still in the air….

The kick is the 2nd strike in the auto-attack chain, the 3rd being the “spin” AoE sword attack.

Even still – if it is required to alter the animations to fix this issue, then so be it.

I don’t think any of us Sword Rangers would really prefer extravagant animation(s) to freedom of movement/ability to dodge. That said, I think they could fix this issue without altering the animations, anyways. ;P They have done so with other skills.

Weapons:
- Longbow needs default + 5% range (untraited to 1500).

- The longbow’s default attack, long range shot, should have bleed like warrior’s rifle bleeding shot.

LB does not need bleeds. That’s what the SB is for. LB is about physical dmg while SB is about conditions/condition dmg. So, no to bleeds, but perhaps a 3-4s vulnerability on hit (enough to keep 1-2 stacks up, and this is more in line with the physical dmg aspect of the LB). I could maybe see LB getting a bit more range than SB to compensate for it’s slower firing rate, maybe. But then what would a traited LBs range be? 1800+? That’s pushing it and I’d foresee lots of QQ in the future. :P Especially if you were to get both the vuln. on hit and the extra range, heh.

I do agree with some of the pet suggestions, especially attacking while on the move and making them tougher, and projectile range being in line with the Rangers current distance from the target (talking about ranged pets).

Oh, and I would also add to “Weapons:” Remove rooting on Sword auto-attack. This is a major issue to me and to other Rangers that prefer to use Sword as their melee weapon of choice.

I agree with EVERY point you made about the Ranger Sword. In fact, I made a dedicated post about this in the Bug forum but am getting ignored.

I was really hoping yesterdays patch would have fixed this issue (and it IS an issue). Funny enough, they changed Hammer Shock (Hammer skill #3 for Warrior) to no longer root in place while casting. Great for my Warrior with a skill that has a cooldown…but how about my Ranger’s friggin’ auto-attack?

My Ranger is my 4th active character – I have an 80 Warrior, 80 Thief, and 80 Necro. I have a lowbie Elementalist and Guardian as well and have messed around with them, too. None of these other classes have any weapon combo that ROOTS you in place for auto-attack, making dodging and movement impossible due to an unbreakable chain combo. I’ve asked my Mesmer and Engineer friends and they said they don’t get rooted on their auto-attacks either. Being mobile and just having the ability to dodge things is absolutely vital during melee combat, so your guess is as good as mine as to why Sword roots us down…

It is such BS that we are forced to deal with this. I would like to ask A.Net, again, to please consider making Sword #1 not root you in place. Class/weapon balance please. GW is supposed to be about playing what you want, how you want – I cannot reliably and viably play my Ranger with my choice of weapon (it’s a Sword, if you haven’t caught on by now!) in this state. The worst part is, I could, if this singular issue were fixed.

PS: Taking the Sword off of auto-attack is NOT a solution, and I’m tired of hearing “just take it off auto and practice.” I am not going to practice a junky mechanic that is not forced upon anyone else. Besides, it is a half-working band-aid; you still cannot interrupt the cast bars once they begin, in order to dodge or move. This also creates a scenario where you have to mash the 1 button constantly, arguably creating undue fatigue and again, just being completely unnecessary when no other class in the game is required to do this.

They would have to completely change the kicking skill from the #1 auto attack of the sword otherwise you will look stupid floating while doing a kick motion and hence would most likely be reported as a bug due to its awkward appearance
That’s how I believe is the only way to fix being rooted to the spot

Then change the animation IF that is what is required. I don’t care – no other class/weapon combo in the game roots you while auto-attacking. Why does a Ranger who opts to use a Sword have to put up with this when nobody else does? They changed my Warrior Hammer skill #3 (Hammer Shock) to no longer root while casting, in this patch – same thing could be done for Ranger Sword #1, and it should.

sword can be used to leap between opponents if youre skilled with it. it has 2 evades, and a leap finisher. just take it off autoattack and practice.

Again, why must we make concessions and “practice” with a crappy mechanic that no other class/combo has to deal with for their main attack? Why can’t we ask for a fair and balanced change instead? Why are you even arguing against it? Do you like being handicapped? Does it make you feel better about your skillz? I don’t understand.

A.Net, please consider making Sword auto-attack not root you in place for the aforementioned reasons, if nothing else. All I’m asking for is a bit of class/weapon balance plz.

Disappointed to see this issue not addressed in the 12/14 patch.

Why are Rangers who choose to use a Sword stuck with terrible animation lock? No other class or weapon combos have this pitfall. Again, being unable to dodge or even move while in melee (using skill 1 auto attack) is game breaking for Rangers that want to use a Sword. I personally know several other Rangers (some in my Guild) that refuse to use Sword, even though they would, because of this singular issue.

I thought GW was about playing what you wanted, not being forced into certain playstyles. IMO, this issue directly conflicts with that mission statement – I cannot consistently remain viable (read: alive) in dungeons, harder content, etc. with this issue if I choose to use a Sword, due to being unable to dodge/evade/move, or my third strike automatically jumping me into another mob.

For the sake of balance, I do not understand why this issue still remains.

No it wasn’t. it still locks you from dodging.

On the bright side though, apparently the final attack has a massive AOE now. I don’t think that was intentional.

As for everyone else, it is still possible to dodge quickly from it. You just have to manually interrupt the skill with esc. It’s annoying, but if you really want to use a sword there you go.

Confirmed, animation lock still present. /sigh

Pressing ESC to interrupt your own autoattack still waits until the current strike (has cast bar) finishes, too…so I wouldn’t exactly call that a reliable method for quick dodging with a sword, heh.

Also FYI, 3rd hit from sword auto always had an AoE. Can hit targets behind you too, just like a Warrior’s 3rd hit from their hammer auto. Makes sense considering the animations. Animation lock? Doesn’t make sense.

It isn’t even that; you still get rooted even when attacking with auto-attack off; it’s just that now you “choose” when to get rooted.

Yeah, for sure. It doesn’t really help much. You still can’t dodge or move during the combo hits, because of animation lock.

Again, this is something no other class/weapon combo has issues with. So…WHY?

uhhh that’s not even a problem, take it off auto attack.

uhhh disabling auto-attack to bypass a broken mechanic is not a solution or a fix. it’s a bandaid.

This is like THE most annoying bug in the game for me atm. I can’t count how many times I died to bosses because of it, and it pisses the hell out of me when I unjustly lose my 25 stacks…

I turned off the double tap dodge feature on day one (launch day) and remapped it to the shift button.

…when it does and i get 1 shot as a result it really makes me rage inside…

QFT, and…same. Turned off double tap to dodge in beta, never turned it back on. It’s been assigned to L-Shift ever since.

I have this issue on every character I have played thus far. 80 Warrior, 80 Thief, 80 Necro, and now on my leveling 36 Ranger.

It is extremely irritating. And I do mean extremely.

After reviewing this and talking with a couple other designers about it, I am now investigating dodge rolls and lupicus’s bubble.

Can you PLEASE, for the love of God, investigate the ACTUAL dodge roll bug that affects EVERY class in the game, and has been, for months? What good is dodging if it doesn’t even work properly and you end up not moving and eating damage? Oh, and it will still consume your stamina even though you don’t dodge and get hit by the damage. /facepalm

The dodge bug is a huge problem in the game, but that’s not really related to Lupicus or this warrior’s solid play.

I did a write-up in this thread regarding the bug, where it occurs and how it occurs.
Turning off autoattack does not fix it, although it does make it less likely to happen.

And since you mentioned trying to do this fight with a Ranger using a sword, perhaps you ought to investigate this issue next:

Since using a 1H sword as a Ranger puts you into complete animation lock (auto-attacking), not allowing you to dodge at all, or even simply move your character around. It’s quite ridiculously that this hasn’t been fixed. Please…investigate these issues.

I don’t want to be forced into a different melee weapon set just so that I can dodge and move my character around properly.

The Ranger 1H Sword [main] auto-attack, which consists of 3 hits, locks you into the animation (meaning you cannot move or dodge) until it is finished. Only AFTER the entire chain animation is completed (after the 3rd strike, and before the next initial strike), do you get approximately 250 milliseconds to either dodge, or sidestep about a foot. Then it starts auto-attacking again and locks you down once more.

Is this really working as intended? I cannot see how that could be possible. I have several other characters that I play frequently, none of which are unable to move or even dodge while auto-attacking. Moving and dodging is vital for melee combat. If using a Sword as my main hand weapon is going to require a cast time per swing, as it does now – it should be INTERRUPTIBLE – meaning that I can break the cast/attack to dodge or move whenever I want/need. AFAIK this is how other classes attacks that root them behave (think 100 Blades), and from what I can tell with my other characters so far, none of them have an auto-attack that either roots them or creates a scenario where the player cannot move or dodge by breaking the cast/attack.

I don’t really find disabling auto-attack to be any kind of solution, at most a workaround until a fix is made, but I’ve already found that disabling auto-attack on my fast-attacking characters (D/D Thief, 1HS Ranger, etc.) actually puts me at a disadvantage/creates hand fatigue.

Can we get a developer response to this issue, please? It affects nearly every class and has been around for months.

I really like my Anonymity Hood on my thief and I’ve transmuted it up to my level 80 armor. It’s always difficult to match armor pieces from different sets – for instance the hood’s collar is often higher than the collar of the armors – but, usually, if you use the same color there is no problem as the parts just seem to blend together.

The Anonymity Hood, however, has a particular issue : all colors look darker on it.

For instance, if I use “Ebony” on the collar of the Duelist Armor and on the hood, I get a black hood and a dark grey collar.

It’s annoying that the hood is always a tone darker than the other armor parts.

I can confirm this, and as I also like my Anonymity Hood, would like to see the colors/filter re-balanced.

Issue: “Truyere’s Leggings” (Light – same skin as “Tactical Leggings”) has visible, bright red ‘underwear.’ The red ‘underwear’ does NOT dye to match the color of the actual leggings, so it is very distracting/disgusting (eww).

In the screenshot, you can see I am dyed all of one color – Iron dye – yet the bright red ‘underwear’ is clearly visible. Since I am Charr, as I run (on all fours), EVERYONE gets a nice view of my bright red ‘underwear.’ Not cool…and kinda gross.

PLEASE NOTE: The red ‘underwear’ bleeds red onto the base of my tail, also the chains around the waist have a weird mix of red in them too. These are difficult to see in the screenshot but definitely visible in game.

The String on the longbow Ganadriva seems to be scaled for some other race.

SAME issue here. For a named exotic it’s disheartening to have this issue. Also, A.Net, there are other bows that have strings looking like this, please investigate Ganadriva and the other bowstrings if you at all can.

Tired of seeing P/P in groups

You can spec into pistols, you can spec into init. regen, you an spec into Signet CD reduction (that gives you +2 init. on pop)…etc. etc.

I can chain Unload [almost] all day long, regularly hitting 7k+ in ~2-3s.

How is that bad damage exactly..? Would you rather me facetank the boss and get 2 shot? I mean thieves have low armor and low (the lowest?) hp pool. There is a reason we range some dungeon fights.

Not to mention with P/P you can drop an amazing AoE blind field (that constantly blinds anything that comes in it). I regularly “tank” parts of dungeons this way with my Thief when we are with less experienced players. When you are specced into init. regen, you can maintain this field for quite a long time, allowing the ranged dps’ers to burn down the mobs.

Have you ever even played a thief, I wonder?

Interestingly enough, I think 100b warriors love you too. Most that go GS are glass cannons/near enough (otherwise you can’t do 20k with 100b ya know?). Without you as a guardian they likely would have all melted.

Speaking from experience as I was once a 100b glass cannon, but I changed to a hammer/toughness/healing build because without a good guardian to keep me up, I’d be burnt toast.

Confirmed with my level 80 warrior, thief, and necro. Happens with all of them. This is a serious bug that needs dev attention ASAP. I recommend sending in CS tiicketss pointing to this thread.

This bug really has nothing to do with the previous 2 posts. It is a glitch that cancels your dodge roll halfway through (it doesn’t even require an enemy’s presence) .for example it happens in PVE when you are trying to dodge out of an AoE, sometimes it will randomly bug out and cancel your roll half way through and you end up taking the damage you would have normally dodged out of.

I have this issue all the freakin time, I started noticing it on my thief about a month ago, and now that I got my necro t 80 I can confirm that it happens with him as well, and probably all classes. Super annoying, can get you killed easily…

I'd rather have reanimator disabled until a fix is ready.

Currently, this skill is basically non-functional. All it does is aggro mobs, not even making it to the target 90% of the time (and when it does it usually only gets 1 hit in), and keeping the necro in combat.

Why does it even have to have health degen? Gods sake it basically has no HP to begin with. At least if it didn’t have degen it might get a couple hits in on the target. It does terrible damage anyways and the +20 toughness (which you get only if further traited in Death Magic) is not OP. If A.Net only wants on of these to exist at a time then just put a hardcap of ONE on it instead of degen with a 30s CD. Lulz.

This bug is really annoying in pretty much every situation..sad it hasn’t been fixed yet. I prefer not to use fast cast so it affects me for sure. Hope necro gets some love soon.

Are you an Asuran? It may have been me that killed you over and over, were you AFK’d right near two Hyenas? I took screenshots if you’d like to confirm. Had a great laugh.

Why someone would AFK in a zone full of respawning, patrolling mobs and DYNAMIC EVENTS is beyond me.

Like Rob said – it’d be just like it was in games like BF2 – used by only a few casual players, the rest will stay on their 3rd party app that allows things like administration, multiple channels/lobbies, muting, banning, etc. Lots of dev time spent for minimal use. Just not worth it when other things could be fixed/implemented.

Lol, this request again…never gonna happen…A.Net has personally said they do not intend to put this feature in the game. Can find the posts right here on the forum if you desire.

With 5 (free) character slots, there really is NO reason to ask for a race change. It’s just ridiculous and the amount of work required to implement would be much better spent elsewhere, be it bug fixes, balancing, content, etc…

“bring back the “Infusion by Seer” system, present in Guild Wars 1.

Agree with this…not sure why they even changed it from GW1! It clearly has the same roots. It would probably be a different Seer in most likely a different location because I doubt the Iron Mines of Moladune still exist..heh.

Old NPC emails will start deleting when you get new ones (not sure what the limit is). That’s what is happening to you.

On that note, keep in mind you can only store up to 10 mails sent from other people (real people). After that, they will be unable to mail you at all.

Most likely your box is full, just delete all the messages and see what happens. You can get unlimited NPC mail (they start deleting the old ones) but mail from other people is limited to 10 (IIRC).

If you’ve already tried that, then I guess you’d need to submit a ticket.
