“The learned is happy, nature to explore. The fool is happy, that he knows no more.”
-Alexander Pope
Rangers are worth having in parties for the pet alone, simply because it takes a lot of agro away from the players. The sprits are more of a bonus. I do agree that they could use a bit of a buff when compared to the Warrior banners (like having more vitality/toughness, or even shorter skill cooldown), but they aren’t as bad as you make them sound. They are simply just an addition to everything ells that you can do as a Ranger.
I don’t feel like there should be, but it would be great if there were of curse. Snow owl griffin and dolphin are probably my most wanted of untamable pets. More varied pet sizes would be nice as well. The bears, for instance, are really small compared to how big they are in the real world.
After testing all the F2 skills.
Using Bonfire with the axes Ricochet doesn’t work at every throw, even though it says “Burning”. Further more, using Throw Torch on a mob, and then following it up with the Bonfire-Ricochet combo, very rarely makes the burning stack in duration. It’s the same when using Bonfire with a longbow; the burning doesn’t seem to stack, but times out instead and then restarts upon the next hit.
The pet effects a lot more things with the Ranger, then steal does with the Thief, or adrenaline does with the Warrior. For one thing, the Rangers base damage is balanced around pet, meaning that if you had your pet permanently stowed, you would deal less overall damage. The Ranger also has a lot of utility skills that are build up around the pet, so not using the pet would make these skills useless.
The choice you get to make is not if you want to actually use the pet, but how efficient you want the pet to be. Just like steal or adrenaline, you don’t have to use your F2 ability with the pet, but unlike steal or adrenaline, choosing not to use your pet at all will affect your base damage and skill options.
I’d rather see the current weapons being mixed more first. I would give the Ranger a rifle, the Thief a shield and torch, the Engineer a hammer and torch, the Elementalist a hammer and pistols, and so on. I have no idea what the skills should be, though.
Totally agree on this. It’s fine that waypoints become more expensive with your level, but zone level should have a far larger impact on the price.
- After the first 5-10 levels No sens of progression for my character, which is one of the biggest incentives in rpgs
Isn’t it better to have all your skills early, so you can choose the best skill set for a given situation, instead of being forced to play an inefficient build? The fact that you play the same build till level 80 is your own fault. You have every opportunity to change not only your weapon skills, but also your healing skill, utilities, your elite skill, and your major traits.
- not much variety in weapons, armors and civilian clothes
That’s because you need to use transmutation stones. In Guild Wars 2, great looking armor is equally valuable to great stats. So when you find or buy a good looking weapon/armor, don’t throw it away.
- there is 1 quest by level !!!
Heart events are not the primary quest system of Guild Wars 2, dynamic events are. Heart events were not even suppose to be in the game, but were put in later because players couldn’t find out what to do on their own.
- The “dynamic” events are not changing the world at all
The dynamic events we have seen so far aren’t everything there necessarily is to see. ArenaNet have been very busy trying to polish the game so far, so there haven’t been a lot of changes to the game. But when things start to settle down, we should start to see new and bigger dynamic events occur. Or at least, that’s what we’ve been promised..
- No sens of group
You just have to actually talk with people. You know, like in the real world. I have been playing the game pretty much solo all the way (level 58 now), and I have still had plenty of experience’s with random people that made me feel like I was part of a group.
- so basically you can’t really CC for example.
Yes you can, it’s just not as easy as other games. The Warrior, Engineer, and Mesmer are brilliant at control, if you build them correctly.
- The way the agro is managed is a total mystery
There is no holy trinity character system in the game, so it wouldn’t make much sense if agro was build up around a holy trinity system. The roles of each player is much more streamlined in this game, so therefor the bosses/mobs also has to reflect that. Strategy comes from everyone contributing equally. You need to get the holy trinity out of your head, and start thinking of Guild Wars 2 as co-op game, then it will make sense to you.
- Personally, the camera issues are a game-breaker for me. There should be at least an option to always align the camera behind the back of my character, and the rotation issue should be fixed asap.
If you hold your right mouse button down, the camera stays behind your character. Left mouse button moves the camera independently of your characters movement. Next to that you can also add keys for ‘look behind you’ and ‘turn 180’.
- but i feel like it will take long before they can balance everything for every classes.
Professions are constantly being balanced. Bigger issues takes longer time. If you really feel like this is a problem, then leave the game and come back in a few months. A lot of people do this.
- The main difference after the baby levels will be in the traits, but it doesn’t make the gameplay richer.
There are a ton of skills options, I’m not sure why you can’t see that? Traits only seem unimportant to you because you add one trait point at a time. Try and go into the Mists (structured PvP training area), and play around with the whole trait system and your skills. Make a few different builds for fun, and test them on NPC dummies. When you look at it as a whole, you will see that it makes a big difference how you choose to build your character.
i find the gameplay very shallow and boring, for after the few first levels nothing will evoluate.
I find it strange that even though you have played MMOs for so long, you still decide to judge Guild Wars 2 based on the first few levels? Surely you must know that an MMO can’t really be judge until you reach max level.
It sounds like Ranger is the profession your looking for. The Ranger has the Spirit of Nature elite skill that can revive players, Search and Rescue that makes the pet revive a player, Healing Spring that removes conditions, heals, and regenerates, and also spirits that can improve damage or give protection to everyone. Or how about Signet of Renewal that can make your pet pull all conditions from nearby allies to itself. The Ranger is also great at creating self combos. For instance, I love using Hornet Sting/Monarch’s Leap with the sword, in a combo with Healing Spring, to create an extra burst of AoE healing.
Next to that you have the different F2 pet skills that gives you a ton of possibilities. You can have a bear pet that can help tank while weakening the foe (black bear) or removing a condition from allies (brown bear). Some pets can do a very long chill effect (makes the boss deal slower damage and move slower), like the Owl that does a 5 seconds chill, or the Snow Leopard that does a 7 second chill. You can also use the Jungle Spider that does a 2 second stun, or the Fern Hound that does AoE regeneration.
Overall, a Ranger as support should not to be underestimated!

@Kasama, could you please add some [enter]‘s or even * or – in that listing, it’s dang hard to read and the way it looks now i feel reluctant to even start to read it…
also, some ranger issues are being dealt with in the 8 or 9 sept. update, as can be read in the patch notes.
Sure thing.
New bug I have noticed lately is
Lick my Wounds is not functioning properly and is extremely inconsistent.
the pet will if in a downed state rez and run over to where your downed body is however it will not assist in anyway to getting you back on your feet. This skill was working fine previously i just noticed it within the last day or so messing up.
This happened to me as well in beta. But your pet can be interrupted, though, making it stop reviving you until you press Lick Wounds again. So if you’re being attacked, that’s why.
I wrote this is another thread, but I’ll add them here as well so other Rangers can see.
These are some mistakes I found with the pets:
Overall, I think you need to check all the pet skills again, not just the F2 skills.

I’m not colorblind, but considering the amount of information that evolves around colors in Guild Wars 2, it’s a bit astounding that there are no support for it.
The torch seems a big bugged.
These are some mistakes I found with the pets.
The Lynx F2 bleed skill adds 4 stacks, the skill says 2. The Alpine Wolf’s F2 skill lasts around 3 seconds, the skill says 4½. The Snow Leopards F2 skill says it lasts 2,1/4 seconds, but it’s actually 7 seconds. The Marsh Drakes F2 poison skill lasts for 13 seconds while the skill says 3½ seconds. The Blue Moas F2 skill lasts about 4 seconds, the skill says 10 seconds. The White Moas F2 skill says it’s a regeneration skill, when it’s a chill skill. Also, the duration of the skill is only lasts around 1 second, which is extremely short for a chill effect. The Black Bears F2 skills says it lasts for 11,1/4 seconds, but it’s closer to 10 seconds. The Arctodus F2 bleed skill doesn’t say that it adds 2 stacks. Lashtail Devourers F2 bleed skill doesn’t say it adds 6 stacks. It doesn’t say how long the Hyenas F2 skill lasts. The Owls F2 skill lasts around 5 seconds, the skill says 3½. The Eagles F2 bleed skill doesn’t say it adds 2 stacks (same with the Hawk). Overall, I think you need to check all the pet skills again, not just the F2 skills.
Further more, the Eagle and Hawk icons look the same. The River Drake icon looks like the Marsh Drake, and the Marsh Drakes icon looks like the Swamp Drake. I’m sure you knew this, but it’s worth mentioning.
