We eventually just ignored him but he literally followed us. We would be running and I’d stop to turn around and he’d be tailing us. Quite annoying. Glad to know I wasnt going crazy and that whatever he was doing is possible with thief skills.

All this talk of whips…do we have some Runescape players in here?

Anyway, I would be happy with ANY new weapon for the thief…even if it is a terrible addition. It would be nice to have something different. But I certainly dont think the thief will EVER get his/her hands on a shield, hammer, or GS.

I can see the thief getting a rifle however, kinda like a sniper….and maybe a longbow. Who knows.

I was in WvW yesterday on my thief with 3 guildies and some jerk face (also a thief) kept following us ALL OVER THE PLACE. We (the FOUR of us) are reasonably good players, atleast I’d like to think so, and we could not kill this guy. These “perma-stealth” builds that thieves talk about arent really “permanent stealth” but I kid you not…..this guy was in stealth 85% of the time we fought him. And when he stealthed and appeared again, he would be extremely far away (way too far to be able to get to in the amt of time he had). Idk what this guy was doing but being a thief, i know there is no build that can do what he was doing. His stealth certainly seemed almost permanent and I have no idea how he did this.

Any thoughts?

So I’ve been playing the profession exclusively since I rolled it after my thief. I LOVE the profession so I am not going to sit here and say that it sucks or that things need to be drastically buffed, but I do think there are some parts of the profession that seem to make little sense.

For example:
-Symbols, really only useful in PvE and on enemies that don’t ever move. So maybe make them more of support than damage. This would also require a longer duration for allies to be able to utilize them. But as far as inflicting conditions or damage on enemies, I don’t see the use.
-Spirit Weapons, well…I never use them and dont see many others using them so idk what to say….which is kind of my point hehe all I know is that for them to be useful, they would need a much faster attack rate. (they hit what? 4 times before destroying?)
-The Sword, I love using it, but get laughed at in dungeons because it kind of is useless. #2 isnt very reliable and the damage is….wait…it does damage? And #3 rarely reaches targets (even when I am in range). So I would love to see some minor changes to make the sword useful (maybe on the chain cause burning on the third attack or something like that, and increase the dps ever so slightly on the burst)
-Most of the time I feel like if I am not wielding a GS or Hammer, I appear seemingly useless to the rest of my party.

If only everyone realized that maces are going to support the party better than anything else in the Guardians arsenal.

Oh well, these are my thoughts on things that could be RE-THOUGHT now buffed to where everyone curses the class thieves. But I do feel that I am really only effective in others’ eyes when I am..

1) not using spirit weapons
2) not using a sword or a torch
3) Using a greatsword or Hammer
4) “healing” the party…which really bothers me. im not a monk
5) buffing everyone with boons.. I do have to survive to pick the dead off the floor too..
6) dealing tons of dps (this would make the guardian glassier than a thief…we have lowest hp pool in the game)
7) tanking and taking tons of dps (in other words, strictly support, which then renders me pretty useless in dps)

So idk if its just me, or does anyone else feel like the profession has alot of expectations that are sort of impossible to meet with our current options.

NOTE: I still play the class and love it, there are just a few things that dont make sense to me

Shield vs. focus?

In my opinion, when I use mace+focus or sword+focus, I find myself rarely using the focus skills. #4 is a slow moving projectile that just stops my main hand attacks and the damage it causes/blind duration is negligible. The shield however has another skill that does “eh” damage (#4) and shield #5 can prove to be invaluable in alot of dungeons and wvw.

Overall, i’d choose shield over focus. And like someone said earlier, it just makes me feel like a true “guardian”

I was running the “Sorrow’s Embrace” dungeon and informed the person recruiting that I was a new player and had not run the explorer mode, but I did watch a walk-through video. They said that that was fine and that they would let me and the other new person know what to do. They did not communicate what to do till after we had already died. They were complaining about getting the dungeon done before the reset and said it was our fault for it taking an hour instead of twenty minutes. I was kicked after helping them defeat the three final golems and got no reward. I was very honest and upfront about my experience with this dungeon and I am rather disgusted with the behavior of these players. I paid the same amount of money to purchase this game as the players who bought it at launch and do not think that I should be penalized or abused for not buying it sooner.

You’re not being penalized, you’re being the subject of a most unfortunate exploit. And it’s not because you hadn’t done it before, its because the team you were on was full of jerks who have nothing better to do than screw over respectful people….its infuriating to say the least

It’s ridiculous that this is even possible… problem is anet cant take away kicking from a party for obvious reasons. Would be a difficult fix.

Thing is..your stacking boon duration and as result you will have less raw stats, so the boons are suppose to make up for it. Your trait lines seem a bit awkward too..and your attack is ridiculously low. Please post all your armor/weapons + jewelery and current build.

I pretty much posted everything already. I use sword/focus and then GS. Both are power/precision focused

Here are my stats

Attack: 2500-2750 (depending on which wep I’m switched to)
Crit%: 35%
Armor: 3179
Health: 14.7k-15.3k (again ^^^)
Healing Power: 272
Boon Duration: 32%

Here are my runes/rings/amulets etc

—Superior Rune of the Dolyak x2
—Superior Rune of the Grove x2
—Superior Rune of Water x2

—Accessories, Back item, and Amulet are all +power +precision +toughness
—Two ascended Rings — Lost Seal of Usoku and Snaff’s Gyre

Here are my Traits:
—0/10/30/15/15
…But have also used
—-0/0/30/30/10
…and also
—-0/0/30/25/15
…with this same setup.

My basic concern is that it feels underpowered in some areas, and then overpowered (however slightly) in other areas. I saw on the thread “post ur stats” some pics of Guardian stats that seemed higher in literally all of the areas I posted except for maybe healing power and boon duration.

I just want to be able to last long and deal decent (not tons of) dps but my main concern is survivability.

Any suggestion?

Hehe only too true.

Only a Guardian would finish a dungeon only to remember they could have used skill #6 to heal the whole time…. they just didn’t need to.

I really want to use the Sword on my Guardian but I feel it’s just too underpowered.. or it atleast doesn’t have enough uses.

  1. is nothing special except the x3 hit at the end of the chain.
  2. is a decent gap closer but the dmg is negligible
  3. is nice burst damage but the “blocking” is really iffy (doesn’t always work). And sometimes, the dmg I get with #3 is pretty lame

My thoughts:
for skill #1 Going with the Guardian effects already, maybe add a burn at the end of the chain, or something.
for skill #2 Increase the damage a bit and since the sword is meant to provide mobility, maybe increase the range
for skill #3 Instead of blocking only projectiles, perhaps just blocking attacks in general.

Those buffs wouldn’t make the sword overpowered, but I feel that it would make it more useful in a PvE setting.

…….So now youre saying that the way you play the game is by doing the same thing everyday and not experiencing other parts of the game?

I play the game by advancing my personal story and adventuring through zones in a natural order. Note that I said “adventuring through” and not “running around and hitting every key point as quickly as possible to score a map completion”. In other words, I try to have an adventure rather than trying to beat the game like its an adversary to be conquered. What is so wrong with that?

And in the process of that I will stumble across and participate in many events, kill many monsters of many different variety, and harvest resource nodes I come across. That allowed me to very easily, very naturally, and with practically no thought, complete the original daily tasks. That is how I play. And that’s exactly how the daily achievement was originally designed to work.

But now, I’m scouring the mini-map for downed-PC/NPC icons, or standing like a vulture near PC/NPCs who are in trouble just waiting for them to fall. I’m wasting time traveling away from where I want to adventure and heading to a city/crafting area to refine materials I had no intention of refining. I’m no longer playing the game and subsequently completing the daily achievement naturally in the process.. instead I’m now specifically working on completing a daily chore and not playing the actual game anymore.

It’s a lame change targeting something that wasn’t even broken to begin with. You want to add in more options and allow players to pick and choose which tasks make up their personalized achievement list? Awesome! But, uh.. have that functionality included when you introduce the change.. not a month or two later when we’re talking about something that is worked on daily.

You can complete this revive ally whilst doing events. And you can find events by adventuring. I’m not saying theres anything wrong with your play style. I do the same, I am simply saying that there are plenty of places to “adventure” and still casually complete the daily. Perhaps think about shifting your adventure to a different area here and there.
Seriously though, it’s not at all hard to complete these new tasks by paying casually and without thought

And as for crafting, please, sell the high tier mats you get from “the area your character is in” and just craft with whatever else you have. I assume, or atleast hope, that your bank of collectibles isn’t empty. Because if youre selling copper ore then you must be desperate for something.

No offence intended here. Just want to point out that these new dailies aren’t the game ending change that everyone seems to think they are.

The new dailies give you something different to do everyday. Please don’t join the “omg I have to go craft something…” bandwagon because it really isn’t that big of a deal. If you really think that selling 20 copper ore is gonna bring you a whole lot more cash than 10 copper ingots (which will count towards your daily), then you are mistaken my friend. In all honesty, the dailies make you play the game now. They make you see different aspects of the game as opposed to doing the same meaningless task of gathering every single day and killing the same things every single day. You now have reasons to go back to crafting. I hit 400 in 4 different crafting disciplines and have literally ZERO reason to go back to it…now I do. Sure its to craft 10 pieces of worthless material, but hey, they got me to click “Use leatherworking station” once again.

If you played Gw1, and really any game for that matter, most of the gear that people grind for are simply cosmetic. It would certainly be unfair for the developers of a game to make casual players not be able to compete on the same level as those who devote hours a day to a game….where is the logic in that?

Grinding for cosmetics is honestly the way to go as long as the cosmetics are cool enough. And tbh, legendaries are pretty dang cool.

That being said, if you want a game where you can grind and grind and actually do get better gear, the go play runescape…. it’s a dead game, but it does have gear that’s better than others even at the same level. And tbh..that’s probably why its dead.

Why are people crying about the update…. They’re not going to make it where you cannot complete the daily, and they’re not going to make it the same everyday. You’ll have something different to do each day.

I, for one, like the idea of not having to necessarily go out and participate in 5 events (which are usually the same 5) everyday to complete the daily.

They made them better, and for those that don’t see why, it’s because, once again, you can do something different every single day and still complete your daily.

“Oh no!!! they made dailies harder and more grind-like”…… no, to those who said this, they made it to where you actually have to play the game.

I noticed that earlier today, many of the server populations were mostly “very high” and now that number of “very high” servers seemed to have decreased by quite a few. And just a couple days ago there were “full” servers, now there are none. I feel like the population dropped today after the update. I am assuming they increased the cap earlier this week but today it looked like there were significantly less populated servers.

Whats all that about?

I cannot think of anything they could actually nerf on a Guardian…
Hammer: If anything they could buff #2 and it’s not like that thing is OP
GS: Please, the GS has 1 skill useful in PvE
Scepter: It would be really nice if they actually buffed smite to a symbol and increased the immobile time on #3
Sword:…Guardians can use a sword?….
Staff: It’s not like the damage on this AoE is that ridiculous and its simply useless in pvp
Mace: This thing seems to me the best weapon Guards can use, and its nicely balanced
Focus: Eh…#5 is really what its used for and it blocks 3 attacks… how many does shield stance block????
Shield: I would love to see #5 not allow enemies in PvE to cross it. It serves as a “why don’t you come on in to my useless blue bubble that’s not doing anything because nobody is shooting projectiles”
Torch: Idk…never seen many Guards use it (I certainly don’t)

Guardians almost do more for the team by being selfish and staying alive.
It’s easier to keep myself alive and if the rest of my team is smart, they’ll stick close and utilize my shouts/virtues/symbols. Otherwise, if I am alive, there’s atleast someone who can go pick up the dead off the floor (really helps in near-wipes).

TBH, I do have to agree ultimately. That while I feel like I have great ways of staying alive in PvE, the other warrior on my team has all of the same ways of staying alive…and then some. (banners…..sigh)

I have to agree, and most unfortunately, point out that enemies CAN pass through shield #2…it just blasts them back for about, oh idk…a second?

It should function as a sanctuary, just maybe not heal you. But enemies/projectiles should not be able to cross into it. And it doesn’t last long enough

EDIT: for PvE of course, as for Rayya’s post, I am surprised that all skills aren’t rebuffed for pvp anyways like they were in gw1, but oh well.

also, I was told that armor rating or toughness is “useless in bulk” that I will get the same effects with 2.5-2.7k toughness, is this true?

I am trying to build a tankier guardian but I cannot seem to last long no matter what I do…

I have 30 in toughness and full 6/6 Sup Runes of the Dolyak

In total, my armor rating is 3,563 and I have about 15.5k health

I still get dominated in PvE

Suggestions?

I really wish people would stop comparing classes. Aside from PvP…it literally makes no difference seeing as literally EVERYTHING you do outside of PvP is WITH other players. Simply put, if a Necro soloed a dungeon, they’d get dominated, if a Guardian soloed a dungeon, they’d get dominated. This game is about teamwork and as cheesy as that sounds, its true. I would prefer not to be in a dungeon on my Guardian while a necro was telling me how much better his class is, especially considering that guy would be on my team.

As far as the initial question goes, Guardians provide good frontline support. Many people don’t like when Guardians say this, but I too have had to rez an entire team before (not saying im awesome, just that it happened). Guardians can take a beating and heal really nicely. Plus, whoever said that it’s the nature of the kid behind the mouse that picked the class “guardian” is straight up brilliant. When people hear “guardian” they think of “someone that wants to protect me”……..

Brand New level 80 Thief (confused)

Buy some cheap lvl 80 gear and do some dungeons and fractals. They’re all really fun. Go to LA and preview all of the dungeon armor to see which one you like, then do that dungeon until you have a full set. Be careful in dungeons as a thief though, were pretty squishy

I’ll try and sum this up as easily as I can….

Thieves, when traited to deal insane damage, are not traited to take ANY damage. I, on my lvl 80 thief, have been easily destroyed in seconds by virtually every class. They are not overpowered. Once you learn to catch one, it’s game over for that thief. Guardian greatsword skill 2 will take a GC thief down pretty nicely and many of the other classes’ skills will as well. Just saying, the thieves that you believe are so overpowered are not. The player behind the keyboard and mouse just knows how to play one. They get in, slash some stuff out, and if they are good, get their rear end out of there and stealth. Though like I said, if you catch one, it’s really no longer a fight.

Guardians vs Warriors

This debate could last forever…
Simply put, the Guardian and the Warrior were not meant to be compared.
Let’s look at this logically. The Warrior was made to use a wide variety of weapons as they have the widest selection in the game (one thing, for those of you comparing, that the Guardian does not have). Warriors, for the amount of dps, are very tough to take down. Also, for those of you who may not have notice, Warriors cannot use magic while the Guardian does. Guardians are excellent at staying alive (hence “masters of protection” – - check out the wiki). Warriors are excellent at killing (hence “masters of martial combat”)

They are different from eachother and it is because they are both classified as soldiers and use the same armor that people assume that one is better than the other. We may as well be comparing the warrior to the mesmer in terms of tankiness/dps….

Don’t think of the Guardian as the old Monk from gw1…but in a way, I guess you should. Guardians have excellent ways of staying alive and high armor rating making them good for front line support.

while a new class would be cool, what you’ve described is a guardian. Guardians, in my opinion, are already very similar to the dervish from gw1. I was a dervish in gw1 (only class I played really) and a Guardian in gw2 and to me, they are very similar. They both are “warrior monk-like” classes focusing on melee and magic. If you noticed in gw1, the dervish had the 2nd highest armor rating behind the warrior. I like the death knight attributes and traits you described though. The soul-eating thing sounds really cool keep the ideas flowin
