By farmed you mean you soloed content intended for groups of 8, in hard mode, with no chance of dying, right? So in what way did splitting skills ‘balance’ pve? It didn’t, it doesn’t. All it does is throw up barriers to pvp, and prove that people will pve no matter how unbalanced it is.

No Chance of dying? Are you kidding me?!?!?! I died tons of times while farming content. Yes I did solo it but it wasn’t without risks and there were plenty of times I died while doing it. I think you are over exaggerating in an attempt to make a point.

PVE skills were balanced and are still being changed and updated in Guild Wars. Just because you may have only played PVE meta builds to farm doesn’t mean we all did that. My husband and I completed pretty much all the content in guild wars together using hero’s. Including Slavers, UW, FOW, and DOA. We didn’t use meta builds we used builds we worked on to be the best for a given situation based on where we we’re going. Just because you can’t understand how to counter the enemies that are in the content you’re trying to do, doesn’t mean it’s unbalanced it means you haven’t spent the time to see what skills they have and what you can bring to the table to counter it.

I also welcome the splitting of PVE/PVP skills. Trying to balance skills towards two completely different types of game play only serves to frustrate players.

As far as GW skill split goes. It was a good thing, I played the game for 6 years and I never played the meta I spent A TON of time theory crafting and testing builds. Yes I farmed, but never with builds I got off of somebody else, they were builds I came up with myself and they worked.

Its not spending the money that is the issue, its spending the money for un-fair advantages

I’m not sure what you’re finding to be an unfair advantage. Buying gold is just an alternative to spending hours farming. You’re not forced to do it, it’s just another way to get in game currency. That currency can’t even be used to get the better in game items.

Question, Do you feel bad spending money on going to the movies?

I don’t go to the movies, this game is my form of entertainment. I set an monthly entertainment budget for myself and that’s the amount I’m “allowed” to spend on frivolous items like Gem Store purchases.

Arena Net does a fine job of only selling fun items in the store and not selling anything that would get an advantage. Anything in the store is totally optional and not having it won’t keep you from doing anything.

Hi mrauls,

Something to think about is that the hearts are just there to guide you to an area, make sure you talk to NPCs as well as these will trigger dynamic events. Where you can earn more xp. I think a lot of people miss that, and it’s easy to do so when you’re used to the old way of questing in MMORPG’s.

The best advice I can give you is to explore everywhere and talk to everyone, you might be surprised by what kind of events you find.

Also welcome to the game!

To my mind, your guild members should be responsible for checking the guild announcement if they want to be involved in things. I haven’t played many MMOs but it never even occurred to me that we should be able to mail guild members en masse… anyone who needs that much organisation has a website in my experience. But that’s not much experience.

I would love it if that was the case, but they just don’t check it. The Message of the Day should be announced and we should have a better mail system in place for guilds.

I’ve actually heard people were going in WvW and changing up key NPC’s and moving them outside of keeps. This is not just annoying, but also quite game breaking if I say so myself.

I didn’t even think about that since I don’t WvW much, but I can see how it would be quite game breaking in those cases.

On my server (Henge of Denravi) They are constantly moving NPC’s to places that make them unusable and/or unreachable. It get’s really old.

example:

As a guild leader I’m frustrated with quite a few guild issues. Aside from the ones you’ve already listed I add the following.

  1. Announce the Guild Message of the day when a person logs in, and announce it when it’s updated, also when I edit it the previous message should be in the edit box so I don’t need to retype the whole thing to fix a typo
  2. Allow me as a guild leader some way to mass email my guild members. Either through an influence purchase under say Politics, or just give me the option to do it.
  3. Tell me when a guild member logs in online.

It is sad and it makes me furious because I invested a lot in my character.
I resent having to rethink my build just to survive, because up until now I really enjoyed playing it.
I play mostly in PvE and Mesmer is a tricky class for that.
Why must I suffer because of PvP balance?

This is just the usual balancing whine that will happen every time Arenanet make a change to any class and just shows that what people are really asking for in this thread is PvE easy mode, where their class is allowed to remain OP and unbalanced.

In any case, mesmers are fine, check out the mesmer expertise here and on guru if you don’t know how to play one.

You know your quickness to dismiss people as whiny or unable to play really makes you come across is quite arrogant. I’m not saying you are arrogant but that is definitely one way someone could read your posts.

Nobody is asking for easy mode pve. What we are asking for is to tweak skills for PVE in the way & with the same care as they are tweaked for PVP. In order to do this properly the skills need to be split.

Right now it’s nearly impossible to make Guild Wide announcements that the whole guild will see. It’s also very difficult to message new members because of the in game email message suppression in place below I’ve outlined a few proposed to solutions to help guild leaders.

  • Problem: Guild Message of the Day only visible when you open the guild panel
  • Proposed Solution: Announce the Guild Message of the day to Members when they log into the game. If the Message of the day is changed it should be announced in guild chat.
  • Problem: No Way to Mass message guild members attempting to message them individually you run into the in game email message suppression. Also with this in place the character amount allowed in emails is severely limited.
  • Proposed Solution: Make one the of the guild buffs you can purchase with influence, give the guild leaders the ability to send guild wide emails.
  • Propsed Solution part 2: The limit on the amount of characters allowed in an in game email is very limited with the message suppression in place you should relax the amount characters allowed in emails.

Fact is….PvE ALWAYS suffers because of PvP. Its never the other way around. Just take a look at the recent “nerfs” that Anet has done. They do absolutely NOTHING for PvE except to frustrate players who already play a “weaker” class in PvE, but might be fine in PvP.

On the contrary balance is just as important in PvE as it is in PvP. Some of the changes are directed towards making the different weapon sets equally viable, that gives more variety in PvE.

If you were going to seriously make this point you would have to argue that PvE is too hard. But, in reality the opposite is true and those people who want an easier time of it can easily overlevel a bit before tackling the content.

This has nothing to do with people wanting things easier. We simply do not want to work up a viable PVE build for a PVE situation only to have it completely changed because of some unfairness in PVP.

My Guildies and I will spend hours trying to figure out dungeons and working on them together figuring out what builds work best for what we’re tackling, and when you spend hours figuring something out you want that to mean something. But when the builds are changed because of PVP and you have to turn around and re-think everything (which means more hours when and if you & your guildies can make the time again), it’s horribly frustrating and makes you not want to look at that dungeon again, because you feel like you’ve wasted your time. Then you have to worry about whether it will happen again and then what?? Well I guess back to square one again or just forget it.

This is the exact reason they implemented the split in Guild Wars. Us PVE Players complained like mad because our builds were always being changed to oblivion due to the need to balance PVP.

I still want a challenge in PVE I want my wins and losses to feel epic. What I don’t want is for my game-play style of choice to be changed because of another game-play style.

GW2 already has a split PvE/PvP skill system.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at signet of rage.

46 seconds of 60 in PvE, 30 of 60 in PvP.

The split needs to be across the board. Every skill. Even skills that currently seem “fine as they are”. They need to just split them now before it becomes more trouble later. And it will become more trouble later, just like it always does. The PVP metagame (sometimes even PvE meta when new content is introduced) is fluid, so things change and are discovered all the time, which will lead to ANet constantly balancing skills based on that. Changing skills for no reason at all is ridiculous, and when you play PvE but the skills are balanced for PvP, that’s exactly what they’re doing: Rebalancing PvE for no reason.

GW1 suffered from it, and they sounded like they were aware of this during all their hyping up for GW2. Yet now its hidden or not even there.

Yeah I remember how annoying it was every time skills were changed because of PVP. It was such a pita to PVE players. I too am truly amazed they didn’t take that system & improve upon on it GW2. Trying to balance one skill for both play styles is just going to frustrate a lot of people.

I have no issues with the 1 set of skills that works in PVP and PVE.

I play a mesmer.
I have a greatsword. I have a scepter, and a sword.
I ALSO have a staff, pistol and focus.
I swap out my weapons based around what I am doing to make best use of the various skills that those weapons offer.

I ALSO have all of my skills unlocked.
AND
I change then out depending on what I am doing and what the situation calls for.

The point is this:
There is no 1 build that works for every PVE situation.
If your doing DE’s you probably want to stack on lots of AOE and DPS skills.
If you running solo gathering resources you want speed and defensive buffs.
If your running a dungeon ( depending on what duengeon and boss your fighting ) want group boon/utility/healing/defensive skills.

you’re right there is no one size fits all build, however there are builds optimized for various situations and when skills are changed to cater to a completely different play style it can ruin a once viable build.

I hope this never gets implemented.

I can’t believe anyone likes splitting PvP and PvE skills or mechanics…
It’s an easy way out that simply shows poor design philosophy.

Stop asking for things that make no sense, please…

Instead of splitting PvP and PvE skills, ANet needs to make PvP and PvE more similar so that it can be balanced under the same mechanics.

I think some people have misunderstood what is being discussed here. It’s not like that ever happens on the internet, right? ;-)

We’re talking about the numbers here, not the mechanics. Amounts, durations — that sort of thing. Same skills, but two sets of associated numbers; one for PVE, one for PVP.

The reason this is brilliant and the reason other games do it is pretty straightforward. Let’s say you have a skill called Signet of Reading Comprehension. When you activate the skill it lasts for 4 seconds. Well in PVE, 4 seconds of Signet of Reading Comprehension might be perfect. But in PVP, 4 seconds of Signet of Reading Comprehension might be too much. It might not be fair and balanced, because after all PVE and PVP are inherently different by their very nature and can never be the same nor have the same balancing requirements when it comes to abilities and skills.

So to solve the problem, Signet of Reading Comprehension has not one but two durations; one that is used in PVE, and the other in PVP. This allows the developers to tune one without breaking the other.

Nice analogy, That’s exactly what I’m talking about in my OP. Skills which function slightly different based on the way you’re playing the game. It has been working brilliantly in Guild Wars for a while now and I can’t understand why they would try to move away from it in Guild Wars 2.

PVE & PVP Playstyles will never be more similar than they are now. NPC A.I. can only be so intutive & smart, their behaviors don’t change unless a developer comes along & changes it. While Player Characters can change at will depending on how the player reacts to the situation.

Why is there no PvE/PvP split?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrsAngelD.6971

MrsAngelD.6971

This was by and far one of the single most important updates to Guild Wars 1. Nearly every single balance contention leading up to that point in GW1 centered around the fact that balancing the game for PvP severely hurt PvE (something Paragons have never recovered from – a testament to the necessity of the feature). Nerfs for the sake of PvP are already hurting the PvE side of this game (Whirlpool, one of the few good Elementalist elites. Mesmers in general, who are being crushed in PvE under the PvP-focused nerfs).

Yet a PvE/PvP split is sorely absent. It should have been one of the very first considerations made. Why is it missing?

I completely agree with you & it’s why I made a suggestion post to please bring it back in the suggestions forum

How about some general talk about what devs think about current balance of profession??

The bug fix can’t never be finished for such huge game, however, the general official ideas about profession design and possible future fixes will restore faith to players.

I remembered I read something about one skill has different effect in PVE and PVP and I think its much better for profession balance than other famous MMO gamers. But as a elementalist, I didn’t notice much differences in PVE and PVP.

Most time I see lots of complaints about elementalist being weak in the ele sub form.
I just started a level 25 thief and read some thief complains about elite skill nerf today.
It would help to clarify the design principles of each professions in PVE, Tournament, sPVP, and WvWvW.

Original I was thinking video stream the discussion would be quite entertaining and new to gamers. Grab more attention you deserved. But a youtube video such as the one for pretty legendary weapons or even a blog post would be fine.

I really think the time is Now (maybe after the Oct special events)

Skills aren’t split at the moment, but I believe I remember reading (or maybe watching a video) where they said the code was in place to split them if needed, and honestly in my opinion it is needed. PVE & PVP are different games and should be treated as such. It’s why I made a Suggestion Thread about splitting them.

Please return to Split PVE & PVP Skill Design

Why? I like how it is now. It feels more flexible and less restricted. Why would you want PvP abilities?

Did you play Guild Wars? The split skill system was the saving grace of pve. Take Aura of Restoration it had a pve & pvp version. The pve version would have been way overpowered in PvP and the pvp version would be worthless in pve. Splitting the skill allowed them to tweak it for each style of game play instead of trying to make the skill viable in both.

Pve & pvp are two completely different play styles. Humans can quickly react and adjust to a situation where as a.i. mobs will only change their play styles if game developers change them to do so. It makes sense to split them because they really are different games, at least in my opinion.

Where does the name Guild Wars Come From?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrsAngelD.6971

MrsAngelD.6971

Guild Wars is not named for Guild Vs. Guild Battles which took place in Guild Wars, but for the lore:

The Guild Wars are the series of at least three wars among different guilds in the three human kingdoms of Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr. The wars ended only because the charr invasion from the north meant an even bigger threat to the three kingdoms.
The second Guild War was memorialized by the construction of Surmia in 1020 AE. Ascalon was the kingdom victorious of this war according to the Historical Monument of Surmia. It is unlikely that the war ended during 1020 AE, however, due to the length of the latest Guild War.
The most recent Guild War lasted for 57 years (from 1013 AE until 1070 AE). The war caused much suffering and hatred between the people of the three kingdoms. These old wounds can be seen in the present day in the form of the mistrust King Adelbern holds towards the efforts of Kryta to help Ascalon recover from the charr invasion, particularly towards Ambassador Zain. During this war, King Adelbern was a war hero which led to his eventual crowning as a king instead of Barradin becoming king.
