weapon swap on an ele juggling 4 attunements would be incredibly overpowered.
The complexity would one-hit-crit-kill pretty much every ELEMENTALIST.
juggling 40 abilities and 5 f-keys would be murder… i’d have to replace my gaming mouse and would probably spend 75% of my time cursing under my breath because i missed the earth attunement and swapped weapons.
Mentioning F keys and changing mouse gave me the impresion you were upgrading for more buttons. I assumed the wrong thing and for that i apologise. Regarding the studies… idk maybe they exist and I havent seen them, maybe its true, but I come from asian MMOs where with 3 modifiers and a razor naga i still had some rare skills on mouse clicks and i felt perfectly fine with all that load. In fact the reason i picked elementalist is the fact all other classes feel really simplistic.
The studies in question show the rate of mental fatigue increases as a compounded function of:
A – the number of choices
B – the weight of each choice’s consequence (penalty for making a wrong choice)
C – the amount of time alloted to make any one choice.
While most MMO’s stack heavily on A and C, they compensate by mitigating B which has a much larger impact on the mental state of the individual. (incidentally, the studies also show that simple sugars.. e.g. junk food.. can help recover some of this in the short term, hence why many silicon valley firms provide free sodas and sugar-snacks to their knowledge workers)
In GW2, screwing up a chain can compel you to break combat or lose initiative (for a time extended enough to be permanent).
In most other mmos you have substitutes that can recover your position. (hence “B” is mitigated)
I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing.. I’m glad GW2 punishes people for their mistakes.. but given this, it’s much more taxing on the mind.
Interesting indeed. I can’t argue against that, even if the mental fatigue acts differently on every person, it would be a poor choice from anet if they implement it this way. Probably they though of this and tried to compensate weapon swap with conjures, but they fall short atm, some tweaking might be enough.
I still don’t see anything wrong with a quality of life out of combat weapon swap.
Im not saying LF is bad, i mean having things like Churning Earth move with it is bad.
The funny thing is this combo can be avoided almost all the time if you actually use your head. If instead of running away you actually idk… count to 2 then DODGE doesnt matter if the ele blinks into your freaking anus, it wont hit. I never get hit by churning earth from other eles. Learn to play.
Exactly.. I believe you misquoted the person I was quoting as me..
You’re right, i though i deleted your name but i got it wrong. I owe you an extra apology, miss quoting you here, combined with the miss-interpretation of your argument in the weapon swap ticked me off a little. From my perspective no one in their right mind would say stuff this stupid and use it against elementalist. I shouldnt be posting at this time of night i guess, thats 2 misses in a row from me.

Mirror Images + Sword 3 twice + Sword 2 + Shatter doesn’t even tickle the brain of an experienced elementalist.
Anyone who dies to this combo must be the worst noob on the planet.
it can be avoided by:
0 – noticing the chain of events and dodging the second sword 3
1 – casting any PBAOE
2 – cleansing conditions and outrunning the illusions.
3 – cleansing condition, dodging once… then running
4 – dazing the mesmer while he’s trying to set up.
5 – using any decent cooldown available to your profession.
once the two rounds you’re talking about are up.. they’re out of endurance and out of clones… ctrl+t and burst them the heck down.
The same way the churning earth + lightning flash combo can be countered by a dodge, but still works… All combos (for the most part) have a counter that requires skill and inteligence/knowledge to perform. This combo is not the last ace up a mesmer’s sleeve, the same way churning earth is not the eles last one either. PvP is about out smarting your oponent (ideally) so you need to be good enough to counter his attacks then surprise with something else.
I liked this reply, you actually raised a good thoughful point.

Yea because you would be juggling the 40 skills at the same time… Think before posting.
~.~ the love is strong in this one….
I hate unfounded critisism… So far you were agaisnt 3 different changes to elemtalist based on nothing. If i allow this to get unnoticed it will hurt the class. Bring valid points and ill take them, but dont come here saying weapong swap would be stupid because now you would need 20 more keybinds to handle the second weapon skills… come on man
I love how people say “omgzzz DD is OP, eles are fine they like live for ever1!1!” but don’t realise DD is not a spec or a build… its a weapon. The problem with elementalists is that we are not viable glass canons. We only have support/bunker.
The damage is there but we lack delivery. Our skills cooldowns are too big and require ridiculous and complicated things to happen so we can do the damage of one heartseeker. The other thing being we lack natural survability for our glass canon specs. Not familiar with other classes but both thief and mesmer can survive so much in glass canon it makes it worth it, personaly i think this stems from bad traits in fire/air trees that don’t give any ofensive defense traits (only give flat %dmg so we can be on par with thiefs/mesmers) or the fact our skills were design overly simplistic to “balance” our ability to use 20 of them. Seriously all our skills are very shalow and 1 dimensional yet read mesmers skills, most of them have rich tooltips.
This game favors bunkers too much… We need more traits or better ones. All classes do.
Thief and mesmer are both exceptions to the general rule that speccing glass cannon in this game will mean many deaths and an inability to do any decent dungeoneering/zerg v zerg.
Mesmers pay for this survivability with severely nerfed direct, player-sourced damage, and even more annoying “setup” and “planets and stars aligning” than eles could ever deal with, including 3 separate chances for people to dodge and nullify their main attacks.
Thieves… they need to be looked at.. they get their cake and eat it too with glass cannon.
Mirror Images + Sword 3 twice + Sword 2 + Shatter doesn’t even tickle the brain of an experienced elementalist. All of this on a 15 sec cooldown because i can replace mirror images with a dodge clone and decoy for the second time..
Regarding the thief thing… i personaly would prefer if we all get scaled to their level. Might not be possible though.

I hope they buff it. I always get jealous watching thieves using shortbow teleport to get on a cliff ledge above them without having to run all the way around, saves a lot of time when chasing someone
WHAT
my shortbow never lets me jump ledgesYou can jump from ground to higher place.
That’s Jump Shot. Only engeneers and warriors have something like that i think, thief’s short bow has the same blink mechanics as lightning flash.
weapon swap on an ele is kitten edly OP, even out of combat…example, i would be a bunker ele but swap to s/d stack 20+ might, auramancer it to group, swap back to staff right before engagement…yes we do that now but making easier on the fly would be OP…
I think we are fine without it, do however wish as some suggested for a system that would allow not only pre-configured weapon sets but traits/runes/sigils. Having three or four different builds profile ready before hand that i can swap to would be great.
You can already do it out of combat -.-
I’ve gotten so used to do it takes me a second. I personaly want an out of combat swap so i can stop using my inventory for it or an in combat swap that puts every attunement but the one you’re on in a 10sec cooldown. I dont see anything OP with that.
Frost Bow: I use this for it’s number 4 ability (burrows, big mobs or large groups) i also like a well timed number 5 on bosses. Haven’t tried in pvp.
Earth Shield: I use this one on very specific hard pve scenarios where a guardian is not available and i need to group up mobs fast. Path 2 of AC where you have to kill the ghosts comes to mind. Haven’t tried in pvp.
Lava Axe: Don’t use it.
Lightning Hammer: I mostly use this one when I’m soloing hard content, like story mode in a dungeon or to jump gaps with the leap. Haven’t tried in pvp.
Fiery Greatsword: I have a mesmer friend and to be honest the only way i found to make quickness actually be worth it for an elementalist was to use the GS auto-attack. Usually my friend warns me he is about to use time warp, then i drop the GS for both of us, he uses TW and we both auto-attack for great damage.
I have a question for people that like to use lava axe for pvp, specially as a auramancer d/d. Is that extra aura really that necessary? I find that i have perma fury and swiftness as it is with only frost/electric aura and boon duration. Lava Axe’s damage is really lacking and I always have something else in my d/d that i could be doing instead of it. Not even taking into account that replaces a slot that could be used by many of the much better utilities out there (like all cantrips). So what am i missing?
I’m gonna have to try this “ppl in spvp dont target staff elementalists” because as soon as I see a staff elementalist in spvp i just see a walking bag of free glory waiting to be taken.
I love that personally, I can go round with 3-4 people chasing me – but what they don’t realize is that while they’re distracted with me (I usually move off a point if this happens) is that my team is capping their points and mopping up their other team mates.
I should have specified a little:
Staff glass canon eles = free bag of glory/always look for him/ takes 3 secs to kill, like thiefs.
Bunker staff eles = ignore, its a stalemate most of the time, I’ll only attack to keep him occupied long enough depending of the circumstance, but over all i never feel threaten.
I agree that distraction is a good strategy and people with no real sense of the game’s objective might get caught easily, but over all, you can do that with any class, it’s not an staff elementalist unique feature.
I’m gonna have to try this “ppl in spvp dont target staff elementalists” because as soon as I see a staff elementalist in spvp i just see a walking bag of free glory waiting to be taken.
hi,
instead of dungeon armor sets, I am looking at Knight’s (power, precision, toughness) or Valykerie’s (power, vitality, crit dmg) Exotic sets. Which of the two would be better for Ele?
I don’t know much about offensive stats, but a lot of people that “did the math” think precision is only worth it if you’re also stacking critical damage. I remember someone saying that before certain levels of power/precision/crit-dmg, every point in power is worth 14 points in precision.
Now for Valkyrie gear, the only way i see it working is if you make a build based around Arcane Power (which i don’t think it could be viable), or if you mix berserker gear in it, and complement the lack of full berserker critical chance with permanent fury from auras. Most people suggest 50% critical chance is the sweet spot.
All of this is based on second hand information I’ve read from the forums, can’t really test it myself for now.
Yeah they are full blown accessories

http://www.gw2db.com/recipes/11532-passiflora-orichalcum-earring
http://www.gw2db.com/recipes/11531-passiflora-orichalcum-amulet
Slightly more expensive than clerics, but not by much. I went with the safest choice for my first accessories, but I´ll get this ones next… maybe
PS: Not a big deal but you’ve replied to me like 8 times now and you keep misspelling my name >.>
Yet you still cant hold your own by yourself, dont get me wrong, it’s definitely a good strategy, but most of the time people is not stupid.. Even if they don’t attack you if you see a point being taken, as a glass cannon staff ele there’s very little you can do about it. You rely on a big guy to go in and distract the enemies for you to start doing damage. Maybe it’s just not my style…
I dont get this, I run staff in sPVP and 90-95% of the time I´m the top player in my team. I get a tons of kills around 20 a round.
And I´m a 10/30/0/10/20 build with berserkers Jewl and amulet
But are you really killing them or just spreading aoes thatget a couple hits of while your allies actually do the killing? I don’t think there’s a difference between assists and kills in this game. Honest question btw.
I’m 30 arcane, 30 water, 10 air. I use knight ammy + zerker jewels with monk, water, dwayna runes.
It rocks so hard compared to staff.
Interesting… I run soldier gear with healing/condition dmg jewels. Do you find that water/arcana build works for a gc ele build by jus using zerk/knigh gear?
Are you doing d/d bunker or glass canon? I haven’t tried it yet myself, but i find really hard to imagine a gc d/d elementalist being suscceful in pvp or pve for that matter. I hope to be proven wrong though, but even then this games favors bunkering to much.
(edited by NdranC.5107)
Air dodge is not horrible when you need stomp everything but ele, thief and mesmers. If you dodge roll into the body with air, most of the time people wont auto attack you in downed state for fear of missing the small window at the end to knock you down at the last second. They wont notice the blind on them in time to save them.
So D/D has a ‘gasp’ downside? Surely we can’t allow that! It should be able to attack anything everywhere all the time!
No weapon is perfect, problem is while a warrior uses a gs to attack, then all of the sudden a target that is high up or to close to his team shows up (which would be this particular weapon weakness) what do they do? They switch to ANOTHER weapon that is particularly strong for this scenario. While as d/d we just switch the theme of our attacks but nothing really changes with the way we do attack.
And that’s exactly what I mean. Not being able to attack at range at all is a tradeoff for being melee with 4 toolbars.
That’s not saying I don’t want you to be able to have long ranged attacks though. However, those conjure weapons you mention…I believe that the key in solving this whole dilemma lies with them. Changing conjured weapons at least would cause far fewer balance issues than weapon swapping would.
I agree. It seems they intended our conjures to make up for our lack of range flexibility, but in their current incarnation, unless they change some of the core mechanics of conjures they’ll remain a novelty thing only good in very specific scenarios as disposable set of two skills. As a personal preference i wish they changed conjures to work as kits and make the fire axe the support healing ice axe and make the bow a fiery long bow with 1200 range and dps skills.

The thing you gotta keep in mind is that this is the Elementalist. It’s not a warrior/ranger with different fluff. Your weapons define your role, not your range. If you’re that desperate for a ranged attack, bring the Frost Bow. Summon an Air Elemental for a change. Bring some different utility skills.
The elementalist has the tools to work at different ranges. The difference is that they don’t involve weapon swapping.
I would love for this to be viable, but what am i supposed to do auto attack 15 times with frostbow? With its oh so slow amazing damage? At best conjures are disposable bundles of 2 or 3 skills. Get one use 2 skills and get rid of it. They are either less damage than normal attacks, only have 1 good skill, very situation dependant or more melee.
Out of the 3 ranged ones, lava axe is just horrible, ice bow number 4 is really good for structures and 2/3 are not bad (5 has a huge tell) and gs which is still pretty short range and suicide in pvp. If they really want conjures to be good, then they need to be buffed and act like kits.
Im glad you like the staff, i personaly feels it requires a small team n the front holding the enemies away from you for it to be really efective. Look at mesmers, their staff is very slow and supporty like ours, their sword/pistol is like s/d or d/d with torch yet they still have that one good long range single target dps weapon. I personaly want greatsword elementalist.
Gap closers wont help you when the enemy is on a high place, specially since they made it so blink abilities (not jump shot though) can’t teleport you to places where the path finding couldnt find a quick route. Wouldnt help you either when you want to attack an over extended target in a zerg without suiciding on a glass cannon spec.
Also, there is nothing worth it, in any single ele weapon that makes up for the range/style change loss that weapon swapping gives.
They have the AoE player target limit is to prevent groups of, for example, 5-6 elementalists completely erasing an area, like when defending gates or in a zerg fight. Since pretty much every class in this game has some form of AoE, fights would be really short and brutal, and pretty much reduced to who got their abilities off first.
So they have an artificial limit to prevent AoE focus firing. Ask any player of EvE Online what a skilled bomber group can do to a fleet, this would be pretty much the same, except the bombers wouldn’t be so easy to kill.
Yet glass cannon elementalists are the easiest class to kill, our AoEs are stationary with big red circles on the ground, or their damage is over time where you can just walk on top of them for a second to cross and barely get hurt or they are very random by nature with big cooldowns.
I’m assuming that in fleets positioning matters a great deal so you all don’t get wiped by a couple bombers… why can’t I, as an elementalist punish a bunch of dumb f…..s who stand together in the same spot without moving? It dumbs down the game.
If you take into account that devs balanced elementalis ability of having 20 skills per weapon, by making almost every single skills overly simplistic and one dimencional and/or by increasing it’s cooldown… then I think we already paid the price for attunement swapping and no, weapon swapping wouldn’t be OP at all.
Now if they only gave us a worth while long range DPS weapon worth of swapping into.
I personally feel that what we need is synergy in our traits. I just finish helping my friend decide on builds for his mesmer and omg mesmer trais are so awesome. Everything has synergy with several weapons and their class mechanic. Some times it was really hard to pick traits because they sound realy good. All their skills have 2 or 3 effects at the same time. Offense and denfence all in one skill or trait. For ele only water and arcane has some synergy. Idk how it is for other classes but if they’re not like mesmers then they should be.
Elementalist is the only class that I love everything about, while still hating most traits.
@daphoenix
If d/d Elementalist requires balance damage, why don’t you use passiflora jewels instead of sapphire? They have the same stat distribution, but instead of power they give condition damage. Full P/T/V armor+weapons and healing/cond/tough jewels should be an even spread of defense and both types of offense.
I’m really trying to understand. I guess my brain is too used to go all eggs in one basket. Thanks for giving your opinion btw.
You only get the actual boons at the end of the cast. Also you can blink into a field, mid way thorugh churning earth and still get the blast finisher to work.
I feel that a trait with retaliation on auras would be perfect.
@NdranC The whole point of this build is to be tanky and to outlast the enemy. The damage output of this build isn’t great, getting a bloodlust sigil or corruption sigil isn’t going to change much at all. The most important stat in this build is toughness with the combination of healing support and bigger than normal health pool. You sacrifice damage for survivability.
That might be true but soldier gear has a main of power. Even in full soldiers you still have the same amount of power than berserker. Although if both are pretty bad for this build, why corruption instead of bloodlust? Cheaper?
Why do you pick Corruption Sigil? Wouldn’t be better to stick to power instead of spreading thin? I don’t know about you but besides vit/healing power, I feel all other stats need to be stacked to max possible to be effective.
I use both and it works.
Finally, the cat is out of the bag. This build is drastically overpowered. When I first started going up against players using this build, I called it the “armored cannon build” because that’s exactly what it is.
This is pretty much THE Elementalist build for WvW. This build is going cookie-cutter and needs a nerf for good reason. The “only 0.1% of players are capable of playing this way” argument is completely inaccurate. The same argument was once used for Mesmers, and look what happened to them.
Learn to counter it and you’ll be fine. We need to be close to you to do anything, so use any immobilize/stun you have.
Our main damage skills are fairly easy to evade if you know what to look for, See a ball of lighting coming at you? dodge just as it hits you. This will also stopped you from getting knocked down as most players will use updraft just as they hit. Same goes with burning speed, use whatever you can to get away and keep your distance from us.
I’m sorry, please don’t try to play the L2P card. I can dodge every lightning ball and bolt. I can even come at you from behind when you don’t notice me, have complete control of the fight, stun you in between attacks, and still lose.
The problems:
1) DPS is significantly reduced against you.
2) Your HP regenerates rapidly.
3) Your DPS is on par with a glass cannon Mesmer.
4) Your mobility is second only to Thief.
5) Your sustainability is greater than a Necromancer..All of these features combined makes the build too strong and too popular in WvW.
3) Are you kidding me? Our hardest critting skill hits for 4k on the rare occation we do at it has 30 sec cd. The other one has a 45 sec cd. Mesmers can Shatter 4 clones + distortion every 15 secs for more than half your health. So no, bunker ele doesn’t have the same damage as glass cannon mesmer lol.
4) I dont agree. Ele mobility is way better without sacrificing much in the build.
What kind of gear stats do you recommend while leveling? Taking into account that P/V/T can’t be obtained until 80 and you need a decent gear to grind for the exotics.
From (1 to 34) you can only get one stat,
(35 to 64) there are 2 stats,
(65 to 79) the usual 3 you get from crafting.
What do you recommend on each?
Would berserker even work for Orr grinding with this build?

Weapon Swap of some kind
MMOs are like a big sandbox, they are only as enjoyable and deep as you want them to be.
Some kids did everything they cared for really fast and got ahead of the class.
Some kids enjoy doing other things that they enjoy that takes more time.
Does it mean the game is bad because some of you did everything you wanted really fast? No, just wait it out and play something else. This discussions only had a point when you had to pay a MONTHLY FEE. You asked yourself every month “what am i doing that is worth resubing again”.
GW2 has nothing like that, its a great game and you did most of the things you wanted out of it, now wait out for a new expansion or play something else. I personally find enjoyment in hunting people down in WvWvW. Never gets old. So Im sure im booting up GW2 to do something at least 3 days a week.
After trying several runes in the mist I was really shocked on how good buff duration is. At the end of a battle with the big special NPCs I have over 10 stacks of might that still have 20 secs on them, 20 or less of Fury, 40+ secs of vigor and swiftness, 30+ secs of regeneration, and protection lasts for almost all the battle.
With the boon runes you can maintain 9-12 stacks of might just from the sigil alone. Plus you get might everytime you go into fire and you can dodge roll into your fire fields for even more might. It isn’t too hard to get 20 might stacks since each stack lasts for 30+ seconds.
So true, i still don’t know how much power/condition damage you get from might tho, but I’m sure its a hefty boost to damage. In the particular build i was using i didn’t have Evasive Arcana, my only source of might was switching to fire, battle sigil and earthquake/churning earth over fire ring, even then i could easily maintain 10+ stacks of might over the whole fight and start the next fight with the next npc with all those buffs already on me. Add the damage you get from 25 points in water and you easily have 12% extra damage most of the time. Just popping armor of earth you get Protection, Stability, Regeneration and Vigor. That equals to 8% damage increase for more than 10 secs. It turns cantrips into a defensive/offensive power machine.

I think someone already calculated that 33% less damage from protection equals to 1300 toughness. Boons in this games are just too good. They equal to a big chunk of stats.
I personally have 10 in earth for protection from auras + protection from switching to earth and armor of earth cantrip is a lot of it. Not that killing the npc is any sort of achievement, but i can kill it without dropping bellow 80% health and without using my signet heal active ability when everything works right.
I just though of an extra perk, but in WvWvW with all that boon duration, you could have a lot of stability from tornado cancel. I believe default is 16 secs of it so 70% boon duration would make it a little over 27 secs of stability without counting armor of earth.
(edited by NdranC.5107)
Yeah i noticed that too. If i use the signet, healing with water is enough in PvP and when I’m really getting bursted I use the healing skills while running away. The buff from GoEH is nice in pve while moving about without the auras swiftness, but in pvp I’ll never cast the healing skill for the buff if I don’t need to heal.
I meant GoEH under water attunement. My bad. i still got the answer I was looking for though. Thx.
@daphoenix
Do you really think Signet of Restoration is better for spvp without Written in Stone? Specially because it seems GoEH has more heals and faster under water.
I find your build interesting and I had some questions.
Why 20 instead of 10 in air? What 20% less CD on air skills and Electric Discharge is giving you that 10 points extra in arcana (lower attunement recharge + boon duration + Final Shielding or Renewing Stamina) or earth for that matter doesn’t give you? Maybe even fire for 3 might on cantrip usage.
Since you have so many boons going on at once don’t you thing 2 monk and 2 water runes will be better for you?
Love you video editing skills btw, really entertaining. I also don’t particularly like that kind of metal, but it had its moments
PS: You should consider making a video explaining your build and commenting/explaining some of your combat with rotations. I noticed you skip churning earth quite a bit every time you step into earth.

I’m currently level 55 and about to craft myself some masterwork level 50 armor. Last time I did this at level 35 I crafted Power/Vit gear.
I play D/D with Zephyr’s Speed and Water/Arcana (20 points in the last two). Mostly a bunker build inspired by daphoenix. I want to start doing dungeons (haven’t done one until now) and I was wonder what combination of stats you think will help me level more. I level with a mesmer friend and I like duo’ing champions with him (he is GS pow/vit). I was even thinking of attempting story mode AC just the 2 of us, see if we can do it for a challenge.
So what do you think? Tough/Vit? Pow/Vit? or something else?
I personally don’t like the Incinerator for my ele. Looks more like a mechanical weapon for engineers. I can’t believe they gave those 2 awesome legendaries to a dual handed wep (gs) when one handed weapons need 2 skins the most. Imagine a twilight dagger and its twin sister the (forgot the name of the day one). How sick would that paring be?
Not to be annoying, but a Mesmer can’t get on demand might stacks, healing burst combos and Regen stacks, Protection stacks, multiple CC’s, Bleeds, burns, etc. They have a lot of cool stuff but are not as versatile as we are. Our versatility is both our greatest strength and our greatest weakness I think.
My main point was that we are lacking on viable damaging builds both because of traits and big cooldowns/low damage skills. All we are known for right now is moving a lot, being hard to kill and making everybody else powerful/healthy.
Also, might stacking shines much more when you have a group of people to buff. Yes we can get 20+ stacks of might on ourselves but by that point we’ve already used all our biggest hitters (at least D/D). We mostly “really” enjoy 9 of them.

I’ve been leveling with a mesmer friend, we both crafted ourselfs the same Masterwork level 35 Power/Vitality armor and rare weapons. Now I’m level 52 and he is 45 because im grinding more during the event. Yesterday during the champion fights at upscaled level 80 his sword auto-attack was hitting for 700 per hit, and 1000+ on crits while my 45 sec Fire Grab hits for 1500 crit… A mesmer can do 4 clone mindwracks + Blurred Frenzy and do 15k+ damage every 12 secs?
So no, I don’t think a 15 sec Fire Grab would be insane.
@Hagnefelt
You’re forgeting to take into account all the Fury we get from this build. Not that i agree or disagree, just pointing it out.
