When you lose touch with the community, you become just another sellout in the industry. That’s just it, twist the truth however you want, I’ve seen devs take an absurd amount of criticism and reinforce people’s respect, because they actually stood up for their game. But you’re not doing that, Arena.NET – you can’t even go in here and say “you’re wrong, we’ll have this and this, we haven’t forgotten the hardcore” or defend your game and tell me where I’m wrong.
Wanna know why I said Colin is not a gamer? Because developers who actually play their game talk in a different way – they answer the exact questions people want to ask and they’re not afraid to stand up if they think this is right. You? “OH, Guild Wars 2 can be that, it can be this, it may have an expansion, we could continue the living story, we might do something else…” A gamer dev, even if he angers the community, at least tells it what his plans are.
Mike and Colin’s latest interviews have laid out their plans in very clear, easy to understand ways.
To summarise: The current plan is to develop and refine the Living Story concept while also developing more long-term projects (including Player Housing, Guild Halls and the GW2 version of ‘raids’, Fortune’s Vale) in the background. These long-term updates will then be released alongside the Living Story updates when they’re ready. The Living Story itself will include more permanent content going forward, as players have shown a strong desire for such.
Another quick example of Arenanet responding to the community is its RNG – Fused were gemstore only, Scel came from boxes that dropped in the open world, Jade come from boxes that drop frequently and can be traded. Although not perfect, this is a marked improvement on what has come previously.
At present, Arenanet has no plans to develop a traditional boxed expansion but it is not a strategy they are closed to, should the playerbase and the state of the game change in a way that would make expansion development optimal.
Towards the end of the month, they will release a more detailed blog post, along with a video, which will expand upon the company’s plans for the last half of this year.
You can say many things of Arenanet, especially regarding the Manifesto, but you really can’t honestly claim that they don’t respond to or communicate with us.
I want a Living World.
I love being able to involve my characters in the newest updates to Tyria and much of the temporary content has been brilliant. I have a particular fondness for the Halloween and Wintersday jumping puzzles, the Molten Facility and the Aetherblade Retreat and Super Adventure Box. Of those highlights, I would only have wished for the last to stay persistant. I hope that when Arenanet does bring it back (as they have promised) it stays for the long haul.
This balance between temporary and permanent is incredibly important to the success or failure of the Living World and surrounding features. We know of some future core features that are more than likely to stick around (LFG tool, Player Housing and Guild Halls) and when such updates are brought into the game it is likely to be alongside the Living Story. The developers have also said that adding the temporary dungeons to Fractals of the Mists and revamping the core dungeons will be done alongside the Living Story.
The issue so far has been that the bulk of the content added in these Living Story updates has been temporary. At the very least, there needs to be a more equal balance going forward. However, this is something Arenanet are aware of and addressing. Being able to hear the active feedback of players every two weeks will help them refine the process, so please post constructive feedback in order to help the devs create the content you want to see in the game!
The tengu consider Tyria their home. They saw the ‘Great Tsunami’ that came with Zhaitan’s rise as a signal to return to their ancestral homelands – Tyria.
However, this bazaar does sound particularly tengu. Mostly due to the ‘Four Winds’. The tengu have four major Houses named North, South, East and West after the winds themselves. It’s entirely possible that the bazaar is related to the tengu, whose primary interaction with the world outside the Dominion of Winds centres around trade.
Well, did you play GW1? Because like I said, it was a system that worked really well. It revolved a lot around supply and demand, with the mediocre skins that dropped from mostly easy dungeons becoming really cheap and the awesome skins that only dropped from the harder dungeons being worth quite a bit. That way people actually went out of their way to do the harder dungeons, and it fostered a really big PUG scene where PUGs actually bothered learning new stuff. Yes, you could get carried and yes there were sh*tters, but it’s still better than what we have now: people only running the easiest stuff, that happens to be the most rewarding as well.
Yet some of the most desired skins were those with tokens attributed to them (Tormented, Oppressors). Tormented was in high demand even before the Hall of Monuments hit and Oppressor weapons were linked to the living story.
Furthermore, the desirable non-HoM skins were farmed by PuGs who very much resembled your standard CoF Path One farmers. Underworld Speed Clears looking for a chance at Dhuum’s Soul Reaper might have been motivated by a chance at the weapons and miniatures unique to the encounter but they still aimed for very low times, still manipulated exploits of a poorly designed dungeon and they still required set classes and builds. That’s without getting into the clustered horror of the SoO runners. Full Assassin parties who did NOTHING but farm that dungeon.
The dungeons that required the longest time investment from a PuG (Urgoz’s Warren and The Deep) only really saw life on the days where the Zaishen Bounty rolled around to Urgoz or Kanaxai. Some of the skins associated with them were incredibly valuable but the time-investment and co-ordination needed meant that people simply didn’t bother as much.
I have no plans to acquire a legendary or any other ‘hard grind’ weapon (Infinite Light, Volcanus etc. etc.) for the simple reason that I’m not all too fond of particle effects in weaponry. This is not to say I fear grind or long-term tasks, my latest was acquiring Chauncey and the Mystery Cat Tonic. I set my own goals and I enjoy having the freedom to do so.
Grinding for Ascended feels like a grind. I have two Fractal Backpieces (one fully upgraded and… usually hidden (xDD), one ready to be pushed to the second tier, a plethora of rings. Conversely, I’ve done map completion three, almost four times and that’s a feat many would claim is horribly tedious for them. I feel almost pressured to make the jump to Ascended, lest something come out that further requires it (gated content) but map completion is something I can just do at my leisure.
There are plenty of games that offer a significant degree of gear grind, I don’t feel that GW2 needs to become one of them.

I love certain pieces of these armour sets. The male Light top and to an extent the pants are pretty nice while the human medium top is just gorgeous and dyes beautifully. Other pieces I really don’t see myself using. Most of the helmets are a bit too out there for me and the hilarious female heavy with its castle boobs is actually rather sad to look at considering the male chestpiece would look lovely on women. It’d be nice to get a set for women that isn’t a sternum-destoying boobplate.
I really want to see more armour designs which resemble GW1 designs. Just thinking about Light here but there’s nothing like Necromancer Luxon, Mesmer Elite Rogues or any Monk or Ritualist styles. Yes, those professions are gone, but must the aesthetics have been stripped away too? Medium armour had an issue that was the reverse of GW2’s issue… too few coats xDD. It took until Nightfall for females to get a trenchcoat. Why not use some of these old designs? They belong to Anet already, after all.
Original skills?
I miss Hexes and Enchantments from the original Guild Wars. They added a lot of complexity to the battle system and did it in an innovative and interesting way. I could also play my preferred playstyle – which is shutdown/subversion – much more ‘completely’ with Curses Necromancers and Domination Mesmers. I miss that.
Please. I’d love this.
Bumping this old topic because it deserves a fresh look. =3
Although I agree that places such as this shouldn’t be cut off if they’re popular, I have to say I prefer seeing RP out in the world rather than in a single cramped district .
Where would you put an orphanage in the open world? Why would you put an orphanage in the open world? There are centaurs and destroyers and krait and all manner of horrible things. Some concepts are simply better suited to a city environment.
Contrary to popular belief it hasn’t really affected Europe either. This is because Europe and Asia have one thing in common. 95%+ of there populations are all white or asian or whatever. It is only in certain countries were you actually have more than one race such as the USA or South Africa. Certain european people groups don’t get along. Ireland doesn’t like the UK because they treated them like kitten for hundred of years go figure, The Fins and Russians don’t get along either after multiple wars. And you can bet former Yugoslavian countries don’t get along. Most industrialized countries have some sort of equal work for equal pay but in all of those countries women hit the glass ceiling and the minorities usually make less than the majority. And it isn’t fair to say “well there are female heads of state in Europe” because that is like saying Obama is black so africans must be treated way better in the USA than in Europe.
Regarding Europe: blatantly untrue. It’s a lot more complicated than that. For instance, France and England were at war almost constantly for around a thousand years and yet there is little genuine animosity between the two countries. There are silly, racist jokes regarding frogs and roastbeef but you’re not going to be lynched for taking a holiday across the Channel.
Furthermore, the black population of France stands at 1.5 million, or there abouts while England has large Indian, Pakistani and Chinese contingents too. Calling an Iberian or Turk white would also be considered troubling. Europe was open for a long, long time and in that time, people moved throug it, warred through it, allied through it. Countries were shaped, reshaped and lessons were learnt. It is by no means perfect and without flaws, but many of its countries are fairly progressive when it comes to civil rights.
Regarding the actual topic at hand: People often like to see themselves and their cultures reflected within the fantasy worlds they immerse themselves within. When people see what they view as an unfair or outright wrong representation of themselves, they can become offended.
To an outside eye, many aspects of East Asian culture and art might well look the same, falling under a collective bracket of ‘Asian influenced’. The argument has been raised that we see European art and architecture mixed all the time – the same for various Middle Eastern designs. The issue here is that East Asia was very contained while European and Middle Eastern art movements spread beyond their areas of origin and were adapted and reimagined in a plethora of ways. While the modern era has opened up certain artistic channels, the ancient art, for a lot of people, is almost sacred and should not be ‘distorted’.
Of course, as an artist, this is frustrating. However, there are ways around it. The Germanic and Greecian aspects of the Kurzicks and Luxons might well have been adopted more firmly into the Empire, rather than been wiped out. Of course, there’s a part of me that wants Arenanet to be daring and just go for it, just design the most beautiful and fitting pieces they can for Cantha and show them to the world. Someone has to take that step sometime and people really are screaming to have Cantha opened up to the GW2 playerbase.
So, let’s see how well the Dragon Festival goes, hmm?
There are two things I consider prestigeous in this game. The first are the Guild Wars1 titles. I have a great respect for people who come from this game’s predecessor.
The second is the commander badge. However, this comes with a few limitations. I’m generally only impressed by the commanders who live up to that badge and who treat it as a responsibility rather than a reward.
Same problem here for my own little House van Deremer guild. However, despite the guild panel showing no upgrades, members or even my own darn online status, I can still access the guild bank.
EU player, NA Server (Tarnished Coast)
Smoothy, I think you missed my point. The developers of GW2 are working on permanent content that comes in a variety of types. On top of the content I mentioned in my last post, we’ve also seen a new zone (Southsun) and a new dungeon (Fractals of the Mists) added permanently to the game. Both of those fit into your prefered paradigm. Arguably the jumping puzzles that have been added permanently, such as the Secret Garden, also fit into your idea of whats fun. Perhaps the old overhaul to AC too.
Ultimately, the developers are working on a variety of projects of which the Living Story is just one. The temporary content suits a variety of players who don’t like the endless repetition, who complete content and look for the next thing or who simply want to see the world evolve. I think it’s nice that GW2 is catering to a variety of players.
What you really ask for is the removal of all cooperative play from the game and that’s the kind of thing that would be a deal breaker for huge majority of people! There needs to be content that REQUIRES cooperative play or only few people will continue to play it! That’s because people need to have reasons to play together. That’s a huge thing for every MMO.
I am really really not asking for the removal of all cooperative play. That really is quite extreme and twisting my words.
I am all for new dungeons in the game, despite my personal gaming preference to not play them.
I am against 5 man content being used to end a story that so far has been a completely solo activity. Do you think that is a reasonable request? (This is the issue I wish discussed)
Just to reiterate my opinion-> Cooperative, organised play should absolutely be in the game. Please do not misconstrue my goals here.
Just take note that original dungeons are all part of the personal story arc. So not just the final mission of personal story takes place in dungeon.
Not true. The story dungeons tell the tale of Destiny’s Edge, which runs parallel to the Personal Story, but is not considered part of it. That said, I like a lot of the story mode dungeons more than their explorable counterparts and many missions from the Personal Story.
Permanent content? Like Guild Missions, World XP, WvW specialisation tracks and now custom arenas and spectator mode?
The Living Story is designed to push the world’s story forward, so it makes sense that some events don’t happen endlessly. Braham and Rox will complete their little story arcs and something else will happen that’ll bring new content to the world.

Love it and I really want to see the additions Josh talks about. It’s also rare for any MMO to have these kinds of activities. Sometimes you just need a break from the regular game. Sometimes you just want to goof off. I could see myself running SAB for fun… a lot.
There are hours upon hours of content that sticks to the original aesthetic and feel of the game. When you add in content, it doesn’t detract from the original content. If this content isn’t up your alley, then don’t play it.
I like that ANet is doing something fresh and different.
Also, please don’t be ageist. Age does not necessitate a person’s interests.
Not doing it does not solve anything. Simply seeing other people with this sort of stuff ruins the atmosphere of the game. I can not participate in that stuff from now til the game shuts down, but someone running by with an 8 bit skin or a goofy backpack ruins the feel of the world. You can’t simply not do the content or ignore the items. How would you feel if, in the next Hobbit movie, one of the dwarves was just an 8 bit cartoon? Would you just not look at him and it would be ok?
I’m all for funny stuff and minigames and holiday events, but let’s keep them consistent with the world we are in!
It was an Asuran invention. Done.
You could use that excuse to put anything in the game. Why not just say a wizard did it?
Asuran technology is magically inclined. Technically, you could say a wizard did it. Tyria is an extemely flexible setting.
Super Adventure Box is the personal project of one asura. Much like Gixx’s inventions and toys, the SAB is designed primarily for asura progeny (and the adults of the bookah races). The moment you step into the box itself, you enter into a virtual reality generator that presents you with an interactive world and gives you the tools with which to deal with that world. For those who enjoy the experience several souvenirs are available. All profits go to Moto.
It’s perfectly plausible within the lore. If it breaks your immersion… well, then you weren’t immersed in Tyria, but your own wishful imaginings of some generic medieval setting.
The term ‘fantasy’ is not one that’s solely applicable to ye-olde-worlde style scenarios. There’s nothing about GW2 that’s medieval and a lot of the details published prior to the game’s launch higlighted this as a way to show how different Tyria was from Middle-Earth-esque settings, and Tyria of the past (GW1). The charr and asura have technology that’s far beyond our own because magic would, logically, /further/ the development of technology.
As for the story and lore – I’m a role player. The story and lore are what I’m here for and one asura’s pet project? Absolutely fits in with the asuran approach to life and the applied magical sciences. Personally, I love this mini-game/puzzle. It’s incredibly inventive and gives me a whole new way to play GW2.

I do like the lore behind the dredge, but by far the most interesting group of antagonists are the White Mantle. They’re hardly in the game, but the lore behind them is so expansive and interesting. I’m also interested in the Flame/Golden Legion politics and both charr and human seperatists. I think more could be donw with those.
I disagree with your points made. How many content upgrades did Prophecies have when it was six months old? What did they get? Sorrow’s Furnace? FoTM absolutely was better than that.
Content takes time to develop. You act like the stuff they’re providing is worthless, but it’s not. It’s also not awesome beyond all reckoning.
You have a game that launched early by anyone’s standards. It’s taken them six months to get the game to launch quality. If during that time they had one decent upgrade, that’s ahead of the game.
I think people are just impatient. If you played Prophecies at launch, six months later it was like, umm, we need more stuff. Same thing people are saying here.If you want more stuff to do, be patient, it’s coming. But comparing Guild Wars 2 to Guild Wars 1, when Guild Wars 2 had three full games and an expansion out, just isn’t right.
Sure we all want more content. The question is how reasonable is it to expect it so soon.
You should look at other MMOs six months out and compare, before you judge.
Six months in? Prophecies had the Underworld, Fissure of Woe, Sorrow’s Furnace… but really, six months in Anet was gearing up for Factions and you can hardly say any of GW2’s update have been on that scale.
And this is why the Aureate GS is my favourite in the game.
When’s this update going Live?
Adding my voice to the ones who say that GW1 did not have a trinity. I Vanquished every single zone with a hero party and not once did I spec one of them out as a tank.
I do have issues with GW2’s combat, but the lack of the trinity isn’t one of them. I’d like to see more complex AI (GW1 had groups that synergised and forced a strategy change), I’d like to see more specialisation into specific playstyles (the ‘soft’ trinty) and yes, I’d like to see hexes and enchantments make a return in some form. I don’t want to go back to ye old tank’n’spank days, but I wouldn’t say no to one or two encounters that promoted a similar strategy – so long as there were plenty of others that encouraged skill, weapon and trait swapping between fights, versatility and variety.
Bringing in the trinity wouldn’t solve any of the combat’s real issues. Giving players who want to play support more opportunities to enjoy that playstyle requires a lot more thought than trying to force dependency on other players.
Tricky. Sheer numbers come down in GW2’s favour but the enchantments and hexes from GW1 were incredibly clever. See, it wasn’t just healing that got dropped from GW2, the subversion playstyle also vanished. Skills like Panic, Price of Failure, Grenth’s Balance etc. That’s the real danger here.
Of course, how dodging would factor is a complete unknown…

Enjoy TESO.
Can I have your GW2 stuff?
I don’t think you truly understand what makes a guild a guild.…
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about what a guild is. Guild content, however, is designed to be about challenges that can only be overcome by working with other people. The new mission type is not intended to change that by circumventing the content that’s already in place. All it does it make it more accessible.
No Offense man, but 99% of the people in this game could pretty much care less about guild content, they want END GAME Content, this game has NONE. Thats why you are losing players!
Lol what do you think guild content is? Also fractals?
Fractals is a joke, it’s not End Game content, let’s hope not, I’m lvl 49 and I hate it, the higher you go the worse the rewards get, the mobs get tougher, and the repair bills get bigger. No one runs fractals hardly ever anymore, especially at high levels, and guild content isn’t End Game content, takes minutes to complete missions.
Actually, Fractals is by far the most popular dungeon and hundreds of people are running or waiting to run it right this second (check out gw2lfg).
Most people who play Fractals do one of two things. Either they hit their prefered daily marker (10, 20, 30) and from then on run it casually or they continue to progress for the challenge of it. Either way, it’s definitely endgame content.
Likewise, Guild Missions are also endgame content. It’s content designed for large groups of people who are used to working together. The encounters are designed for groups of level 80s, which, shockingly enough, makes it endgame content.
As a fan and member of a couple of smaller guilds, I’m very thankful for this update. It’s great to know I can introduce friends to this kind of content.
I’m always a fan of more options, especially when the options Braham appears to have are more polished and unique than the ones the player was given (norn customisation falls woefully short compared to humans).
I’d argue the other way around for women. But yeah… I’d definitely like to see Braham and Rox’s unique looks available. Even if it’s gemstore only.
You realise that 4am where you are is noon in the UK, and in the afternoon for everyone else in Europe?
Just find a good time to do your dailies and it shouldn’t matter when they reset. If you get ’tomorrow’s’ dailies in the evening, what’s the issue?
I can’t possibly express how much I want Cantha back in the world. Factions was the strongest expansion pack, in my opinion. It struck me emotionally more than mmos ever did before. It’s ironic that universal means ONE culture and artstyle. That’s the antonym meaning of the word. (curious, since there are Elonians in the game, and the Ossan Quarter is not hiding anything)
Even my character, a Vasburg, is devoted to Kurzick culture and lore; a story that was compelling and interesting. The Luxons and Kurzicks made their way into the heart of many players.
Isn’t NCSoft Korean? I have so many puzzling unanswered questions.
Crossing my fingers for rationality and a reborn Cantha.
Bit edgy to name your character Vasburg. I have a character whose family swore fealty to the Vasburgs, but that’s as far as I’m willing to go with that.
If that works for you.
I don’t recall any official number on the House members. There’s a gap in time after the end of Factions, where logically new members were born. Who’s to say a father or mother, or both, weren’t adventurous and went on to Kryta with House Ulrikar? Yes, there were infighting between the Houses, but with the Ministry of Purity and the short time of peace after Shiro’s second death, it leaves a time open for questions on whether immigrating is a better idea or seeking a stronger political standing with the other houses; and potential roleplaying. There’s a lot of speculation that rules nothing out. Especially because, as previously mentioned, there are no numbers. You’d have to think that the families were marginally bigger than represented in the game, simply because it is a video game. Vasburgs were also the second most influential House, and likely the second or largest one considering they were purely the military vanguard.
Completely off topic here, but I imagine seeing people discussing 7 year old lore is a positive effect.
Yeah, I’m not saying you shouldn’t, just that some folk are going to frown at you for blood linking your character to such an important house. Same as they would for anyone named ‘Thackeray’.
Personally, I think that 250 years give you a lot of room to play with. Heck, as someone who plays a character from a bannerhouse, I’d be interested in actually connecting to yours.
Doomguard, the unofficial role playing servers are Tarnished Coast (NA) and Piken Square (EU). Both are full of RPers just waiting for more RP. Neither really need the official lable ‘RP Server’, the RP community just… claimed them anyway xD
Haha, yeah.
If there’s anyone on TC that feels they’re getting lost in the crowd, or is just looking for a different kind of RP, come check us out. There’s a lot of criminal scambling now the big boss is down, we have active guilds for every Order and we’re beginning to spread out a lot more. ^.^
Hahah. Really one of the best RP server’s I’ve been on in my MMO career. If I emote after an event, I almost always get a response from another RPer and all of a sudden it ain’t about whackin’ those monsters anymore.
It’s about ze art of makin’ stuffs up!
Yes sir, I come from a long line of banana-cream pie salesman. I came here to save my bananas.
What server? I might have fun as well! Haven’t RPed since UO pre-aos
Tarnished Coast, US server
EU here :S
Piken Square has a reasonably active RP contingent, so if you’re not on there already, you could always pop over and see if you enjoy it there.
After a couple of years, GW1 merged its databanks (or did something along those lines) which allowed people from different regions to play together. As someone with a number of GW-playing American friends, I loved this.
Furthermore, I’m very tempted to hop on over to TC, and see what all the fuss is about. But, being an EU player, that would set me back some cash and there’s no certainty it’ll live up to the hype.
So I’m left wondering whether cross-region guesting will ever be a thing and how it might be possible…
Ugh. This pains me to hear. I’m on Piken Square, which is the EU RPing server and sadly, its not as densely populated as TC. Sometimes you’ll find yourself alone doing events in the wild and due to the large WvW contingent, not quite everyone RPs anyway.
But we’re still awesome. And our events are awesome. ^.^
(edited by Safer Saviour.9685)
yes they do add to the game. They add immersion, and companionship for RPers. They add collectables for achievement hunters…
Considering this is a world in which teleportation has been around for hundreds of years, adding mounts for transportation would actually break my immersion. Particularly when I think about seeing several dozen personal motorcycles racing around over Orr.
Creating mounts would also take a great deal of work. Animating each one to fit with each race’s style of riding, animating each armour set to work with as little clipping as possible, animating the mount itself, probably adding skills to it too, working out how to acquire mounts and adding in new content for that. Really, for something that’d take away from the scenery’s cohesion it’s an awful lot of work, especially when there are quite a few things in need of fixes.
Same. I’m flailing about wondering about the details. So many questions. Here are few I’d love to see answered:
Are they going to be ways for WvW players to acquire Ascended gear?
Aside from the ability to carry more supply, what other WvW progression options are going to be added?
Is everything going to be centred around WvW?
Will there be a way to get the Tybalt backpack?
Can we have some more armour/weapon skins?
@Aeon I think you hit the nail on the head there, and at least no one else is going to try removing trinity without a proper replacement, thank god. I don’t think combat is ‘amazing’ though, more of just meh. I like actually using my brain and strategizing which is why I loved GW1.
I think you confuse combat with enemy depth.
It’s not our combat mechanics that are boring, it’s the AI.GW1 required more tactics because:
- AI used proper teams (healer, rupter mesmer, condi necro, 2 warriors, ranger)
- AI had proper skillbars that would make sense for a player to use, sometimes even great builds with 10 skills, elites and all.
Therefore you needed to setup a good strategy to counter their builds and their comp.GW2 lacks exactly that.
Mobs rarely have a proper “team”, it’s a miracle if they collaborate.
Mobs have 1-2 skills. Very rarely 3.
Mobs have no builds. They spam their 1-2 skills over and over.
Mobs have no team AI. They won’t try to act as a team and help each other.Combat is great, AI is terrible.
Anet needs to stop making mobs use “mob skills” and give them proper builds like in GW1.
I expect a Warrior mob to come Bull+HB me.
A Guardian mob should give protection/aegis to the team, use bubbles and walls.
I find most of the complaints on this thread to be worthless to me, but this? This is spot on and I’d never actually thought about it before. The mobs in GW2 are varied but there are very few which actively synergise with their own allies and the area around them. The closest the game comes to that kind of content is… probably the dredge and even then, there are some severe limitations.
The developers would do well to look at their AI systems and see how they could improve. Patrols and unified groups would be a very nice upgrade, for sure.
I want it. I want it now. Soon. Please. Please can I have it. You can have my money if I can have it? Especially if it’s as good as Rift’s. That looks pretty good for customisation.
Alts eat through money.
As said in other threads; LOTRO had about the perfect system where you could have a set of clothes for stats and another for image. This system misses the mark for me and my entire gaming clique.
I share the OPs opinion. Bringing modern clothing and affectations into this steampunk style universe does look cheap and is thematically breaking for me.
GW2 isn’t set in a steampunk universe. Although a lot of the charr technology operates on steam, there’s a lot that doesn’t too. Then there are the asura, whose teleportation technology is beyond any real world transportation system available. To say nothing of the plethora of revealing female outfits which would have been unacceptable even for the Ladys of the Night in Victorian (steampunk) times. Hoodies? Particularly hoodies which are really just hoodied vests, really don’t contradict anything thematically.
I don’t want people to think I’m bending the existing lore too much. Also, as the main-house Vasburgs (and the Turtle Clan) were likely the first to die when Usoku set to work on the Kurzicks and Luxons, I’d like to know the story of your character.
Personally, I felt that Elona was stronger than Cantha in many ways but both were stronger than Prophecies. I want both back. I want to visit Echovald and the Jade Sea and see the ruins of these places and peoples that I loved. I want Kaineng to be reminiscent, but not identical to the Kaineng of old and one hell of a jumping puzzle.
I would pay a lot of money for such content. I doubt I’m the only one.
Elementalists aren’t wizards per-say. The staff and sceptre are as much focus items as, well, the focus. They’re used as supplimental items of power rather than the source or channelling force for power.
As for the Elementalist’s staff animations being too similar, I invite you to look at the Necromancer alternatives. Four of the five have the same animation.
Guild Wars 2’s armour selection is incredibly limited in terms of style. There’s a lot of variation within certain styles, but it can be very frustraiting if you don’t want your female caster to look like a carnival girl or a conservative priestess. There’s nothing that looks elegant. For the male casters, there’s nothing that looks sexy. For the medium armour wearers… Trenchcoats. If you don’t like trenchcoats you better like underboob.
Arenanet could make a lot of money by adding in a number of GW1’s costumes and armour skins. I’m really not sure why they don’t.
My main’s main armour set is something that he’d seek out in character. It looks a lot heavier and a lot more durable than most Light armour sets and due to how well it fits his personality, I’d simply transmute any Ascended armour to retain the looks.
Of course, this is providing that the Ascended armour doesn’t suit my character more. Actually, seeing as my characters tend to amass large wardrobes, I might just keep the armour seperate purely so I have more variety.
Cosmetics ftw.
Guild Wars 1 had a plethora of things to do for the sake of acomplishment rather than advancement and even more things to do for the sake of pure aesthetics. In Guild Wars 2, I find myself running dungeons for specific stat combinations, pushing through Fractals again and again to get the next upgrade for each of my alts. In fact, there doesn’t seem to be an end to it.
In that sense, Guild Wars 2 sometimes feels like work, rather than play.
However, there are bits of content which really do appeal to me. Map completion, jumping puzzles; those feel like achievements and the exploration is rewarding in its own way too. The combat is a lot more active and I really enjoy that (though I do miss hexes and the ‘shutdown’ playstyle). For all that I feel forced to do it, Fractals is inventive and enjoyable with a good group. The monthly updates keep me checking the news too.
Shining Blad Light Armour (Anise’s set)
Mesmer Elite Rogues for armour (though it’s a kitten tough call) and probably the glacial blade for weapon (an even tougher call).
