Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

Now that is if it all was correctly implemented, but QZ doesn’t fire 14 arrows in those 4000 milliseconds post patch, it only fires 12 arrows in 4000 milliseconds.

Then if that’s true…

BEFORE PATCH:
16 * 134 = 2144 base dmg with QZ

POST PATCH:
12 * 134 = 1608 base dmg with QZ

PERCENTAGE REDUCTION:
(2144 – 1608) / 2144 = 25% less base damage

Again, that doesn’t take into account any bleeds or other gear that may increase the SB damage.

However, in PvE assuming you have a pet that’s alive and dealing damage too, the OVERALL damage reduction is smaller because they didn’t nerf the pets damage, and our SB crossfire damage is just part of that total.

That said, in PvP where pet damage is reduced or eliminated, the nerf is much more profound.

Heres a link to someone that actually went and tested prepatch. http://tinyurl.com/9uzzgqw

If that post is correct and crossfire took 400 milliseconds before the patch, the math changes as follows:

BEFORE PATCH:
(4000 / 200) * 134 = 2,620 base dmg with QZ

POST PATCH:
(4000 / 220) * 134 = 2,436 base dmg with QZ

TOTAL REDUCTION:
(2620 – 2436) / 2620 = 7%

Remember, this is just BASE damage for the shortbow over the 4 seconds that Quickening Zephyr is active. I doesn’t include bleed stacks or any other damage bonuses from gear.

….

I guess you missed my earlier post, you cannot use 4 seconds and an accurate measuring time to calculate up to 60 seconds. This is the biggest fault i keep seeing from people saying theres no major damage decrease.
You are essentially saying that any decimal is useless from .1 to .9 but you fail to realize that 16,9 arrows in 4 seconds is 253,5. And no im not saying that was what it used to be but im tired of seeing that stupid kitten argument

I’m not saying that there is no major damage decrease. I’m saying the math is telling me that damage output has been decreased by 25%.

And people can’t do an as accurate as you want calculation because we don’t have those numbers.

Next time read the entire post.

QZ doubles the speed.

Before the patch, one arrow took 500 milliseconds. With QZ, each arrow took 250 milliseconds over a 4000 millisecond (4 second) time span. The base damage of crossfire is 134 per 1000 milliseconds (1 second).

Before Patch: (4000 / 250) * 134 = 2,144 base damage from QZ.

After the patch, one arrow takes 540 milliseconds. With QZ, each arrow takes 270 milliseconds over a 4000 millisecond (4 second) time span. The base damage of crossfire is still 134 per 1000 milliseconds (1 second).

Post Patch: (4000 / 270) * 134 = 1,985 base damage from QZ.

After the patch, SB crossfire combined with QZ does 10.1% less damage than it did before the patch.

(2,144 – 1,985) / 2,144 = 7%

EDIT: I punched the wrong numbers into my calculator the first time. Fixed.

My daughter’s elementary school had today off. So did the local university. If enough of the ANet team had today off (they deserve vacation time too), those who are working today might not be able to say its an error that will be fixed, because they may not know yet. Why assume the worse? I say give them one more day. If we haven’t had an ANet employee respond by this time tomorrow, then I’ll be miffed too, but I’m cutting them some slack today.

At the end of the day, this is a game. It’s meant to be fun, right? Stress is known to cause health issues. It’s not worth it over a game.

Everyone says the SB fired 2 arrows every second before the patch. That’s 120 arrows per minute, or 500 milliseconds per arrow.

The patch notes claimed they added 40 milliseconds to the animation. That means the SB went from 500 milliseconds per arrow to now being 540 milliseconds per arrow. If you divide 60 seconds by 540 milliseconds, it’s 111.11111 arrows per minute. That’s a decrease of 8.88889 arrows each minute.

According to the wiki, the SB crossfire skill has a base damage of 134. That means, after the patch, the SB does 1,191 less base damage per minute from crossfire.

Before the patch: 16,080 damage per minute
Post patch: 14,889 damage per minute

So just base damage alone, that’s a 7.4% decrease in base damage per minute. Remember this is only base damage. If you’re able to stack bleeds, that damage has also been reduced because you’ll get less stacks per minute. If you have a signet on your SB with a chance to deal extra damage, the game only “rolls” your chance of extra damage on every arrow. So now there’s less chances to roll for that extra damage. If you have piercing arrows and line up your shots to get multiple enemies, now those secondary targets take less damage too. Etc., etc.

The consequences of slowing down the firing rate of crossfire can be pretty big, depending on your build.

No idea. We were told last night they would look at it, and then its been crickets.

In all fairness, today is a holiday in the USA. So I’m personally going to cut them some slack for today. That said, whatever response we get (or don’t get) from the devs after today will be telling. This is a major concern for rangers. If nothing else, we just want honesty. At least I do. Whether I agree with their eventual response or don’t agree, if I get the truth, then I can go forward and make decisions based on the facts rather than conjuncture. If they say nothing, on the other hand, then I spent my entertainment dollars in the wrong place. I can’t see them ignoring this, though. We’ll just have to wait and see if we get an official response tomorrow.

Low FPS, not a pc problem!

My old computer has an i7-860 quad core proc running at 2.8 GHz. It has 8GB of memory and an AMD 7890 video card.

I wasn’t happy with the 20-30 FPS in GW2, so I purchased a second 7890 and setup crossfire mode. Even with the CAP file that officially added support for GW2, the fps improvement was minimal. Then I overclocked my CPU from 2.8GHz to 3.7GHz. It made a huge improvement in GW2. The game felt a lot more smooth and I was able to increase my graphic settings, while still having a fps in the 35-45 range.

To put that in perspective, I’ve since built a new computer. The new one has an i7-3930k six core proc running at 3.8GHz. The system has 16GB of memory, but I’m using the same two 7890 video cards in crossfire mode. With the GW2 graphics options set to auto-detect, everything is enabled and all options are set to high (nothing on ultra). I’m getting around 50-60 fps with vsync enabled. (Over 100 fps without vsync, but I don’t like the tearing on my 24" monitor.)

GW2 is definitely a game that wants a fast CPU. My old computer has a much faster proc than the OP, yet I had to tone down settings to get playable fps. Even now with the second fastest Intel consumer CPU available, I’m still only getting 50-60 on high graphics options. Maybe I could increase that more if I had another $1,000 to spend on an NVIDIA 690 or 2x NVIDIA 680, but the point is that, much like most “new” PC games, if you want the highest fps with the best graphics settings enabled, you’ll need top of the line hardware.

This is a good thing, btw. It means GW2 will still look good for a few years. If they toned down the graphics at launch, imagine how crappy the game might look in a couple years. It’s better that it’s this way. Besides, even on lower graphics settings, the gameplay is the same and is still fun. It just doesn’t look as nice.

Pulsating Tone - Sound Glitch

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Skolvikings.5132

Skolvikings.5132

In a dragon event in Frostgorge last night, my sound glitched. The game sounds were replaced by a pulsating tone. An extremely annoying pulsating tone at that. After the dragon died, I exited to the desktop and relaunched the game. That was the only fix.

Well today, I was doing a DE in the Straights of Devastation. You know, the one where you defend the position from both sides, and then after that one ends, you have to escort a few dudes that are looking for treasure or something.

Well, the initial DE was fine. Once the second escort DE started, my sound glitched again with that same pulsating tone.

These are the only two times this has happened to me. I’ve done plenty of DEs, including the two in Straights of Devastation many times before. My sound drivers haven’t changed recently either.

Any ideas?

Usually in dungeons, my bears die quickly against most bosses. But then again, so do players who are standing in melee range. At least if my bears can take a few hits before dying, that’s a few hits the others in my group didn’t have to take.

I think the bigger problem in dungeons is accidental pet agro.

Permanently Stowing Away Pet

Skolvikings.5132

Not only do I want to permanently Stow my pet, I want to have a percentage increase in damage to all my skills and abilities for not having the pet out. Our damage as Rangers is directly tied into the pet, i’m sure by a certain percentage, I would love to get that back when my pet is Stowed so I didn’t have to rely on the pet at all. And don’t say then you should play another class, this is a viable and good idea…

I disagree that it’s a good idea, but it certainly is a valid opinion. That said, I wish people would stop hijacking these permanent-stow pet threads with their desire to have petless rangers. Let’s just start with a stow pet button that works. Please discuss petless rangers in your own petless ranger threads. Thanks.

Basically stowing your pet really hinders what you can do using the pet’s F2 abilities, so why lose that?

Because its my choice.

Seriously, the first time I stowed my pet, I was like “what the kitten!” when it reappeared out of nowhere. It was completely unexpected and not intuitive. I was sure it was a bug that a stowed pet popped out upon taking 1pt of damage until I checked the forum.

I still think its a bug.

The stow pet button, THAT IS ALREADY IN MY TOOLBAR, should stow my pet. That’s it. This isn’t rocket science. If you don’t want to give up your F2 ability, don’t use the stow pet button. Problem solved.

I use the Harpoon Gun primarily. I use #3 as my opener due to the long cast animation. I follow that with #2. Often those two alone will take a single PvE mob down to half health or less. Once that happens, I use #4 as a finisher and mop up with a few auto-#1 if that didn’t quite kill them.

For higher HP like champions or whatnot, I use the same sequence multiple times. Only I won’t wait between #3 then #2 then #4, with auto-attack #1 while waiting for cool downs.

Usually I use the armor fish pet. I’d say that 80% of the time or more, I get very little aggro and take very little damage since the armor fish is tanking. It even does a great job tanking champion bosses in DEs. It rarely dies and lets me do my thing with the Harpoon Gun.

3. No. Passive pets shouldn’t provide special passive buffs to their Ranger. That’s what F2 and spirits already do.

Err…no. We’re talking about two different issues.

Pet damage is a separate beast from F2 skills. In theory, pet damage is part of the class’ damage. F2s are just a subset of their overall attack repertoire. But since pets don’t attack or can’t attack sometimes, that’s why a passive buff is warranted.

You can’t suggest F2 itself is enough to offset the potential missing damage when the pet is not able to attack.

I guess I don’t have problems with my pet being able to attack 99.9% of the time. I don’t see that as a problem. If the pet dies, that’s part of the mechanics of playing a ranger. If the enemy is on a ledge, except for PvP, kite it where you can get your pet to it.

The only real situation where my pet doesn’t attack is sometimes when I’m destroying an inanimate object. Well, the inanimate object isn’t fighting back, so it’s no real loss.

Buffing petless rangers is a fundamental change that I personally oppose. We’re a pet class. If you have issues where the pet doesn’t attack that’s not caused by poor gameplay, then offer suggestions to fix that issue. Don’t use it as a lame excuse for why pets are bad and we need a way to roll without them.

I’m traited 30 intoBM and mainly use a Lynx in PvE for its high DPS. I keep trying birds, but they die so fast. I’m the type that hates having to pet swap as a normal gameplay tactic. There are times in level 70 PvE where I can order my Lynx to attack a target, and within a few seconds, it’s dead without any help on my part. Especially when I have multiple stacks of Beastmaster’s Bond active on her.

In WvWvW, I run my Lynx usually. I suck at WvWvW though. I like the ideas to use a wolf or drakehound for the CC. I’ll have to try that.

I don’t like that idea, pets are a defining element of our class. If you like bows and don’t like pets, perhaps a warrior is a more suitable class for you.

We already have a stow pet button. We’re just asking that it actually stows the pet and keeps it stowed.

Can players run around without having any weapons or armor equipped? Of course they can. Is that a good idea? Probably not. Yet they have that choice. If I want the ability to nerf my ranger by having my stowed pet stay stowed until I say otherwise, that should be my choice too.

Obviously, rangers are meant to have pets. All of our traits, skills, etc., are based around the fact that we’ll have a pet standing next to us — as it should be. None of that has anything to do with giving players the option to keep a stowed pet stowed until we command it to come forth. I can think of several situations where I just want the pet gone temporarily (yes, jumping puzzles are a big one).

This isn’t game breaking. Stowing pets doesn’t give any unfair advantage to rangers that have their pets stowed. It’s a personal choice. It boggles my mind how passionately some people argue against those of us that feel this way! Now, granted, there is a small number of glass cannon rangers who want to be able to dismiss their pet and get a buff in return. To that, I agree in saying: NO WAY! As Visieron said, we’re a pet class, and we should in no way get buffed for choosing not to have a pet out.

All that said, let me stow my pet and have it stay stowed until I unstow it. Please!

Unless they can but they’re overwhelmed by the sheer number of broken oranges across all the servers. I don’t know… I want to stay patient and be understanding, but I hope Anet also understands that this is a game we play for fun in our precious free time, and running around to skill challenges and DEs that end up being bugged when we get there… that’s not fun. :|

The thieves tended to understand that they have it pretty good right now, but even some of them were moaning about us rangers!

I guess my point is that none of the classes are perfect. We all know there are bugs with rangers, just like other classes have bugs. We also have different opinions about the various ranger skills, traits, etc. But by in large, I’m loving my ranger. I’m not quite 80 yet, but my intention is to have a 0/0/30/10/30 spec. I’m already 30 into BM and my cats deal crazy sick damage. I’m hard to kill, yet my SB and my LB do some nice damage with the proper runes.

I‘m just having a ton of fun so far playing my ranger. Remember, none of the classes are perfect.

Nope, my suggestion is to scale Karma & XP based on your real level, rather than your adjusted level.

If there are content issues beyond that, those should be addressed, but are not part of this suggestion. However, players that don’t want to go to Orr can already go to Frostgorge Sound.
More options (being able to go to any zone) to have fun, gain karma, and gain xp, seems like a win-win for everyone.

Eventually, there will be more & different zones available to max level players via expansions. This suggestion simply expands the “max level” content to potentially be the entire game, rather than a few zones, until that time arrives.

If walking/running was so important to the idea of experiencing the game… Stopping and helping others… then why do we have INSTANT TRANSPORT FROM ANYWHERE TO ANYWHERE waypoints? At least if I’m on a mount running past a DE, I have a chance of noticing it. When I waypoint from the Grove to Queensdale, I’m skipping all those zones containing people to help and content to explore, aren’t I?

I just really don’t get these “mounts prevent exploration and cooperation” false arguments. Under that argument, waypoints are way worse!

Personally, I don’t want mounts. I want cheaper waypoints. It shouldn’t cost me more to round-trip waypoint to a zone, than I get in reward for doing one or two DEs there.

Pets will not stay stowed?

Posted by: Skolvikings.5132

Skolvikings.5132

Even if the stow is working as intended, that doesn’t mean we have to like it, or that we shouldn’t voice our opinions on the matter in the forum. Personally, if other rangers want a permanent stow option (forget all the buff nonsense), I wish they would speak up too. If ANet really does listen to the player base, they could be persuaded to change how it works.

My 2 cents is this: give us a setting in the options to make the pet stow button permanent. Unchecked can be the default behavior as it is today. (Just like we can toggle double-tap for dodge.) Don’t give any bonuses to a ranger that stowed his/her pet.

For those that want a buff, they could add a 30 BM trait to buff the ranger if the pet dies, or maybe if the pet dies and the pet cool down is still up. But not apply it to stowed pets

Anyway, if they made the pet stow an option to toggle in the options, without any buffs, then everyone wins. Those who like it the way it is now, nothing changes. Those of us that want the control over the pet stow can have it. No one gains any game advantage from a stowed pet, so its fair for everyone.

A.k.a. a WIN – WIN.

I have no problem with HoM Getting rewards but why do it to rangers? why take away pets by all means give you guys weapons and armour but taking pets away from rangers? at least let us get them at some level 80 area or something and let the Gw1 players start with them

I agree with this. Besides, how much of a reward is this for GW1 players with zero interest in playing a ranger?

Even if you keep the current rewards, don’t display them as normal pets. I feel sorry for the casual ranger who doesn’t read the forums, busy spending his/her time trying to find a pet they’ll never get. At the very least, add them as a special but separate area of the pet panel, clearly marked as an HoM reward pet.

I don’t understand. You don’t need to be a ranger in GW1 to earn all the necessary points in HoM, and if you’re not interested in playing a ranger in GW2, then this shouldn’t bother you at all. You’re not missing out on anything.

This would be a slap to the face for their GW1 players if they made HoM rewards available to everyone. It took some people in GW1 YEARS to get the legendary “God Walking Among Mere Mortals” (GWAMM) title. If it bothers you that much, buy GW1 and earn the points yourself.

When I read back in January 2012 that GW2 would be doing this “HoM” thing, I immediately knew I HAD to have all of this stuff, so I bought GW1 and got 30/50 HoM points. You had the same opportunity, and you still do.

What I meant was let’s say I earned the HoM points in GW1, but I don’t want to play a ranger in GW2. I wouldn’t appreciate the pet rewards.

I’m all for GW1 rewards in GW2 like GWAMM. That’s cool and I don’t resent it in the slightest. But I’m not sure I get the pet rewards. Hey, it’s my opinion. You’re entitled to yours, and me to mine.

Btw, I didn’t even know about GW2 in January.

I want to play my ranger with sb/lb. Unfortunately, I had to drop lb for the axe/wh combo. When it’s a zerg of players attacking normal mobs, I’ve learned that in order to get tags and loot, I need to equipment my axe and spam the tab and 1 keys while strafing so my tab keeps targeting different mobs, popping QZ and my other swiftness buffs as often as humanly possible.

Of course, when we’re defending a single point like a bridge or a doorway, I usually barely notice that tab actually targeted anything before the mobs are dead.

When the DE is against a single mob (e.g. a champion), I take out my shortbow and do everything humanly possible to flank to stack bleeds, again using QZ and rampage as one, etc, as often as possible.

The most fun I’ve had recently was when another ranger and myself randomly met up in a cave with a cave troll champion. It took a little bit but we took the troll down. The loot and chest was kinda lame, but I just enjoyed the experience.

Pets will not stay stowed?

Given how useless a Pet is in WvW, I would like that we get something like 20% damage buff when Pet is stowed. And obviously as the topic is about, when stowed, stay stowed.

I disagree with the idea to get a buff for stowing our pets. We’re a pet class.

That said, I agree 100 million, billion, gazillion percent that a stowed pet should stay stowed until we manually unstow it.

I love my pets. That’s why I chose to play as a ranger. I actually have 30 points in Beast Master. I’m no glass canon who’s trying to get rid of my pet and ask for extra buffs in return.

Yet the fact remains that there’s a stow pet button already. It just doesn’t work the way many of us expected. In real life, if I put my dog in a kennel, the pooch ain’t getting out until I let him. I just expect the same option in the game, that’s all. Nothing more, nothing less. Its not about not having a pet, or any of that bullkitten. I just want a stowed pet to stay stowed until I say otherwise. I mean, arguing against that would be like if we put our pets in passive mode, but the pet would automatically switch to aggressive mode if we took a single point of damage. That wouldn’t make sense would it? Neither does having a stow pet option that doesn’t stay stowed. If I put my pet on passive, it will sit there idle and watch me die if I don’t tell it otherwise. I’d like the same control over the stow pet button.

If you don’t see the need, that’s fine. We don’t have to agree. Some of us consider the stow pet button to be bugged as it is now, and are asking for a fix. That’s all…

Thanks.

PS. To those who would want an option to make a pet-less ranger, that I strongly disagree with. Pick a different class if you don’t want a pet. All I want is the ability to stow my pet and have it stay there, complete with the accompanying loss of stats in the meantime.

Not sure if this is a bug, but it’s extremely annoying:

If you have the Natural Healing trait that gives your pet passive health regeneration, it’ll constantly make that rebreather sound while in combat.
It’s very useful in PvE but my friends are starting to get frustrated with my pet standing next to them mimicking Darth Vader.

This weekend I respeced my traits and picked up passive health regeneration. My pet now does this too. Its like its gasping for air or something, breathing really hard and really loud. Its so annoying that I’m considering taking another trait, even though passive health regeneration is otherwise perfect for my current build.

There is a stow button, and in many ways the current system works.

So if they just added an checkbox in the options menu “manually stow and call pets” then everyone wins. No drama, no fuss.

I agree with this 100%.

I’m a ranger and I have abilities that can help heal the group. For example, I have the Healing Spring ability. During a group battle against a boss, I frequently run up to within feet of the boss, activate Healing Spring, and then back off again for my normal ranged attack. The Healing Spring will give healing to my pet and any other melee class players within the aura radius for 15 seconds.

I haven’t played all the other classes, but I often see that other players have activated some type of healing or regeneration aura skill, or setup a healing turret, etc.

Finally, any player can resurrect any other player. It’s common for a player to die in a group battle, and be rezzed relatively quickly.

I think waypoints in a zone should be free once you have 100% completed that zone. It would give players another incentive to completely finish all of the exploration, skill, and yellow heart objectives.
