I used to play spirit ranger when I first started pvp. I stopped after a couple weeks because the spirits were killed in the beginning of almost every fight. This left me with little offense and little defense. Of course, at that time, many people were running bunker builds.

A couple weeks ago, I was watching a match and following a spirit ranger (laughing to myself). After watching him a while, I realized that he really never died and I discovered the reason; many people now are running glass cannon builds so they can run to a point and unload everything on the person standing there. This tactic may work against most classes but is always a complete failure when using it against a spirit ranger. I now run a spirit build when I plan on protecting points and sure enough, idiots jump on top of me and unload everything while I avoid the damage. Then they stand there looking like an idiot as I slowly kill them or make them run away.

Kill the spirits to make the ranger extremely weak, then unload on him – it’s not a difficult concept and it works great!

Oh, if the ranger in the video can kill people without using a heal or having any spirits up at all (even though he wasted 3 points in his spirit line), either he is a god, or the other player really sucks!

The guy killed people without even having any spirits up – and running a Moa! To me that shows that the people he was playing against were really, really terrible. He got destroyed by a guardian with all spirits and moa up. If anything this video shows why spirit rangers need to be buffed, not nerfed!

Ranger Pets' Behaviour Is Seriously Broken

I know I was not targetted because I especifically tested this with a ranger friend in an empty server. Otherwise I would just be making a fool out of myself.

Then you attacked the ranger first and the pet tracked you down. Pet’s always stay by the ranger’s side unless they are attacked or told to attack. They don’t simply run around the map, looking for targets to attack on their own!

If you don’t believe me, roll a ranger and see for yourself.

Spirit Rangers not as easy as you think

A spirit ranger with dead spirits is by far the weakest class in the game. Any other class with equal skill level can steamroll over them. Anyone who is above their skill level can destroy them in a matter of seconds. Their only chance for survival is hoping they can absorb enough damage to stay alive and not get interrupted during the 4.5 second recast time. If they are lucky enough to recast their spirits, they have to pray that they don’t die immediately, because then they have to find some way to stay alive for 60 seconds with little defense and no offense.

To me, the solution seems simple – spend a few seconds killing the 2 main spirits.

If you happen across a good spirit ranger protecting a point and you attempt to fight them at melee range without first killing the spirits, you will likely die. With all their spirits up, they are OP but once you kill the spirits, they are the weakest class in the game – by far!

TBH, spirits have almost no health, a 60 sec cooldown and can be killed in 5 seconds with even the most bunkerish of builds. When I use a spirit build, 90% of the people I fight will focus on me and completely ignore the spirits. That always makes for an easy win!

Of course if you nerf spirits, we all know that nobody will use them. You might as well just get rid of them and add more damage to the SB or LB so rangers can be somewhat competitive with other classes.

Not lying, it’s an extremely low skill level, easy to play build, that’s all.

It’s interesting you say that because at the start of the game, rangers were known as the worst class. Once people gained some skill at the ranger class, all of a sudden, it was the most OP class in the game – without any real changes to the class itself. They keep nerfing it, people changed builds – to the very same builds that were available and used on day one and people come up with new complaints.

I see a lot of rangers and many of them are really bad. If it is such as easy class to play, they would be dominating everything.

Maybe if people stopped coming on the forums and complaining every time they lose a 1v1, we might be able to tweak the game to something really good.

Now for the real truth about spirits:

They die in 2 seconds to most AOE.
They die in 1 second to treb or cannon blasts.
They are slow as molasses and are rarely next to you when entering a fight
They take a long time to cast in the middle of a fight
Every time you go under water or exit water, they reset
As a bunker ranger, I can even kill them in a few seconds (with exception of the elite). There is no reason why any class can’t kill them in a few seconds.

I never used them in the beginning because they usually died immediately at the start of every fight – and that’s just stupid! Unfortunately, now its the only viable spec that we have. Give me some sb dps and I’ll happily get rid of those pieces of crap!

I recently started using macros with my thief. Now I can take at least 3/4 of someone’s health in under a second and kill them with one heartseeker. Contrary to what people say here, I have yet to see someone escape the first flurry. The only time they have a chance is if they are using a bunker build. In that case, I can usually just keep attacking them and stealthing away. Eventually I tear them down or teammates show up.

The more I play a thief, the more I can’t stop. All this power is addicting! Please don’t nerf the thief!

In case you missed it, thief burst nerf inc.

The degree of skill that is required to defend yourself from damage should be equal to the skill required to cause it in the first place.

In order to kill someone instantly with a thief, you have to be able to press three buttons within a couple seconds of each other.

In order to defend yourself from that same damage, you have to correctly predict where and when an invisible opponent will be attacking, save your stun breaks and execute them in .1 second, dodge in another .1 second. If these defenses are not executed perfectly, you can expect to die instantly or lose most of your health, only to die in a second attack 1 second later.

Umm @Wombat, yes 99% of sPvP players DO need to learn to play…thats a fact …

Good, at least now we are getting somewhere!

We have established that 99% of the spvp player base simply doesn’t have the skill to live through the damage that a thief puts out. Now, do we tell that 99% that they have to play the game until they can recognize the sound of a thief attacking and hone their reflexes until they can react in .1 second to that sound or do we nerf the damage of the one offending class to normal levels?

Let’s be honest, most people just aren’t capable of that kind of reaction time are not going to practice to those ridiculous levels.

If it’s a l2p issue then 99% of people in spvp need to l2p!

I have been playing my BS thief a lot lately and all I do for a guaranteed kill is wait until someone engages my teammate, then I come in behind them and drop them in 1 second. It’s rare that they are not dropped instantly and if they aren’t, I just spam heartseaker till they are dead. I can normally kill 3-4 people in a row that way – as long as they all don’t ignore everyone else and focus fire me.

In 1v1 fights, I can instantly drop people about 90% of the time. If it looks like they aren’t dropping fast enough, I just stealth and run away until my cooldowns reset. By that time, they are usually engaged with someone else and an easy kill. Bunker builds do so little damage that I have plenty of time to get away.

After a couple rounds of this, everyone on the other team always quits. It’s actually quite funny to watch, although it does become kind of boring because there is not much skill involved. My ranger is much more challenging to play and keep alive.

People who think thieves are not OP obviously haven’t played many other classes!

Here’s a thought, make everyone else stronger.

So you let every class kill each other in 2 seconds or make every class a tank that can only be killed by a thief.

If they keep the thief and mesmer classes at their current state, it’s really not a big deal because I really like the game and:

1. I don’t have to pay anything to play
2. I can choose to play those classes within a matter of minutes

I just think that people should be allowed to play a class of their choice and still be able to complete with equally skilled opponents without having to master the thief class and game mechanics first. Anything else is simply going to drive people away.

You can use damage mitigation to overcome it as well. I rarely die to a back stab thief on my ele. That’s on an elementalist. And it doesn’t take hundreds of hours to learn the sound of 3 skills. It is relatively easy to counter a relatively easy build to play.
Thieves are meant to have an advantage if they catch you off guard or not paying attention. This Isnt a new thing by any means.

Few classes have access to that kind of damage mitigation. Even then, you will still lose 1/2 or more of your hitpoints in less than a second, only to have all your stun breakers on timer and an opponent in stealth, able to attack from anywhere.

Perhaps “hundreds of hours” was a slight exaggeration but the fact remains that it takes 1 hour to learn to kill someone with a thief in 2 seconds and it takes a lot longer than that to learn to survive that same damage.

I don’t mind thieves having a stealth advantage and a single high damage ability from stealth, however, I do mind them being able to kill someone in 2 seconds regardless of what the defender is doing at the time. Anyone who doesn’t know the classes inside and out is simply going to die immediately.

Give all classes an ability that will punish new players or players not paying attention with instant death and we will have a balanced class system (and a really kitteny pvp system). Giving that ability to 1 class only is not balanced and makes for even worse pvp than if everyone had the same opportunity on their chosen class!

Base all balance complaints on TPvP from here on

Thief and mesmer classes are already overplayed in spvp. Most people who are new think that getting killed in 2 seconds is just part of learning how to pvp so they put up with it for a while or they quit. Once some of them realize that it is only 1 class doing that kind of damage, they simply roll that class and join the fun. Now we have a situation with every team having 3 or more thieves with the goal of ganking anyone new over and over. Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t see how this is good for tpvp.

If we are only concerned with tpvp, why are we giving everyone the same gear in spvp? Shouldn’t we be forcing everyone new to use scrub gear and take their beatings while they learn to cope with more powerful opponents? If we are only concerned with prepping people for tpvp, should we really be giving them the option to play with balanced classes at all? The class that they use until level 30 should have 50% less damage and 50% less durability so they will be forced to learn to avoid attacks from more powerful oponents in .1 second. Isn’t that exactly what is happening already? Do people think this is really good for the game in the long term? How are they going to remain profitable when the majority of people won’t stick around to be ganked continually?

I admit that I have played a ranger and engineer from the beginning but recently jumped on the thief bandwagon. I am just as guilty of ganking noobs because the game makes it so easy. It beats having 1-5 minute fights on my ranger!

It shouldn’t take more skill to defend yourself from a thief than it takes to play the class itself.

Currently, all other classes need to spend hundreds of hours playing a thief until you are good enough to recognize the sound and animation they make before a stealth attack, not to mention, anticipate correctly when and where the attack will take place. You also have to hope that there are no other sounds around you or you may miss the stealth/backstab sound. Next we can’t use our stun breaker on anyone else because we have to make it ready to use if a thief attacks. We then have to be ready at all times to execute the stun breaker in .1 seconds after we hear the correct sound and hope that it actually breaks the stun. In the meantime, we will just ignore everyone else. We then have to execute an evasion in .1 seconds to get ourselves out of backstab range and swing wildly in the air in all directions hoping to hit something. If somehow the thief misses and only takes 3/4 of our health with other attacks, we have to get down on our knees and pray that he has used all his initiative, stops attacking and stealths away, never to come back until our stun breaker is back up.

In order to play a thief, one has to complete level 1, purchase the correct armor/weapon, copy a backstab build and practice pressing 3 buttons as fast as possible.

Yeah, the balance seems fine!

The main problem is that stealth gives a player the opportunity to start and end combat at any time of his choosing. That in itself is a class defining ability. Balance that with equal damage and lower durability than all other classes (or less damage and more durability) and you have a somewhat balanced class.

When you combine stealth with extreme damage, you have the making of an OP class. When everyone has to adjust their spec in order to simply survive a single class (not even kill them), most people would rightfully come to the conclusion that there is a problem with balance.

Have patience, and don’t let him see your back. If he cant get behind you he cant burst you at all, and he will have to run or die.

Any good thief will stealth/heal , run out of range, let initiative recharge and go back in for another shot. Eventually he will kill you simply because he always has the advantage in every fight.

The best thing to do when you see a thief: Stand there and die in2 seconds, then roll a thief and have an equal chance!

How the game should be balanced

A class is OP when someone has to become an expert in order to have a chance to avoid being killed in 2 seconds by that class. Any class that can kill an equally skilled players in less than 4 seconds is OP. It’s OP because it doesn’t make the game fun for the vast majority of the player base. Games don’t need to cater to the 5% – those people have time and can take care of themselves. Any player worth their weight will always choose a more difficult class and learn to play it well. Thief and mesmer are currently the two easiest classes by far.

What took me over a month to learn on a ranger, I was doing twice as well with a thief and mesmer with just 2 hours of playing each class. I played each class for a day before I got bored and went back to the ranger. Anyone who thinks those classes are not broken is crazy!

The good thing about GW2 is you can roll the class of the hour in no time flat, copy a build and compete without a problem. The bad part is once you get bored of pawning everyone, the top class becomes redundant. You can’t roll a weaker class without spending hundreds or thousands of hours learning every aspect of it or you will just die at the hand of lesser skilled players with OP classes. That is when people leave on a search for a game with better balance.

So what if the Backstab build is not nerfed?

You have a signit that cures all conditions on you, and breaks stun at the same time, a trap that you can put at your feet that will immobilize, and cripple the thief, and a skill that makes your pet take the damage.

So you think rangers should all run around with a survive thief BS spec and die to all the other classes instead. It seems strange that everyone should be forced into the same spec or die in 2 seconds over and over from one single class.

If nothing else, that should tell you that the one class is OP.
