I come from Squeenix counterpart because after 17 months I could not stand Final Fantasy 14’s repetetive, bullkitten gameplay design anymore.
FF14 defines tedious, repetitive RNG nonsense that is wrong on so many things. I like many responses in this thread because it keeps my faith in some “oldschool” attitudes I like. Nowadays, kids want to jump around in “da endgame” without actually playing the “early game”. You can see that in FF14 where new players get pushed everything into their…you know, where the sun does not shine. So you have tons of noobs in the endgame pugs and that sucks. Repetitive things make clear that someone spent some time and effort to get (ITEM NAME) or (DUNGEON/MAP NAME). And if I do so, I want that the nice thing I carry, wield or wear is a hurdle to lazy people or, as you call them, people with a “short attention span”. Don’t get me wrong here: I also have a full-time job and a household to manage, but when I go online in GW2 I can advance in tiny steps while it’s impossible in other games.
Just check the reddit of Final Fantasy 14. People, even the fanboys, complain about how tediously repetitive it is to advance. And those guys even pay for it. EVEN WORSE: That still will be nerfed to pull in newbies. So you are supposed to: Play and suffer or don’t play and get it easier later on. Both are terrible gameplay designs.
I quitted after I had to wait for hours for one FATE (random event) to spawn and when it spawned I have been on the restroom and others killed it. That was the moment I realized how awfully boring a game can be. Then, on Heavensward release, I pre-ordered HoT and GW2 is such a balm for the soul for the MMO player in almost any aspect in the game. Older players might not realize it (anymore), but I still do.
You should play Mobas maybe. Level 18 in 15 minutes and in 45 minutes all starts from scratch. Do I want this in an MMO? Never. If people waste time on Facebook (and their games) they have the time.

Okay, here we go. It’s..um…also matching the point of this threat I guess
Asura (engineers) are the reason why I play and love this game. I am kinda slow with progressing but it’s more fun this way. (An Asura-only guild would be awesome, but meh, that won’t happen I guess)
To me it sounds like you expect DX12 to magically solve any problems around..
This feels like 1995 to me when Microsoft jumped on the DooM hype and released DooM95 – running DooM on DirectX and on pseudo-32-bit increasing RAM requirements. While the game ran fine on 16-bit MS-DOS without DX….
20 years later…
Is this some kind of “Show your Lalafell”?
Heck yes, I am in. Even though I barely see any Asura. And that sucks, but okay.
I think it’s also hard to create Asuras that don’t look like rotten fruits. Asura are the reason why I chose this game as I want small races (and I do not mean Dwarfes or Gnomes!) They’re like the master race of this game
EDIT: I just figured out the screenshots are only on the other computer. Thought I had a couple of them here, but okay, I do it later^^
In one mission you gotta help some guy healing wounded NPC. When you accept he gives you 3x the ability to heal / revive guys, I can’t remember. But when you had the healing ablity, you wore a backpack with the revive symbol on it. That looked kinda cool, as Engineer that looked like the MedKit and I felt like an actual medic. I’d buy that backpack on the instant!
I don’t think steampunk is bad. Especially since this is not quite steampunk. This game covers a large aspect of different themese and styles and that spectrum makes me enjoy it much. What Squenix in FF14 did is actually steampunk. There is 5% of this “metal and neon light” setting and 95% is fantasy. In GW2 it feels the mix is far better (okay, coming from Rata Sum I am used to see technologic installations^^), it’s like 30%/70%.
I find nothing at this profession “odd” or “out of place”. Explosives and elixirs are not that far away from the game’s theme. I enjoy that the game is a 3rd person shooter to me. I love to randomly draw dual pistols just for the look of it. Placing turrets supports the idea of my little Asura to compensate for the lack of physical strenght.
Stuff like this just make love the game and the profession. The MedKit and Defibrilator are nice ideas off of the “I cast some random fancy magic, the screen turns bright and all are happy” sort of stuff from FF14 and other games. When I look at the traits and skills it just makes me smile. The nice mix of MMORPG, Fantasy and nice pew-pew. Plus I always wear top hats (or in this case: “Ringmaker hat”).. And that is only cool on Engineer ^^ If there would be a soap dispenser looking like the flame turet I’d buy it on the instant for my bathroom.
Or to have 4 different DoTs popping up. Poisoned, bleeding, dizzyed (or whatever that is English) and burning enemies. I see their HP bars being very low, stow my weapons, press V (to look behind me) and see them slowly suffering and doing barrel rolls while dying in flames while I walk away. I do not make insane damages and crap like that, but I have been Black Mage in FF14 and people were permanently thinking I had to be a DPS monster to the very limit and that pressure sucked so much that I like to be in the 2nd row here, firing mortar poison gas shells from a vintage point into the masses.
Sure, I am totally alienated this way of playing the game. Reading all the “look at this guide”, “do this and that” sort of people going to the very limit at everything they can. That’s cool for them, but I am here to enjoy the game at my pace. Listening to M.J.s “Smooth Criminal” or some “Strangelove” by Depeche Mode, eating a nice sandwhich while grilling stuff with the flamethrower. This is gameplay quality to me after my busy work days. (Eh, I feel old after typing this.. :P)
I also never care about other classes. I have my engineer. Period. I do not even use a single of those level-up book things you get. All 100% genuine killing-EXP. So enjoyable and totally fitting my ingame character (role play), my race and my real-life character.
Just made a picture (and shooting 500x grenades into the environment until I had a useful picture..^^) to make clear why I love that profession.

Probably your GPU doesn’t allow you to use that setting.
BTW, “dual core CPU” doesn’t tell much about what CPU you have, but I’m sure that if it really is only dual core, it is a really old model and this game depends a lot of your CPU, even my smartphone is quad-core …
Can you try to show a more detailed spec of your PC?
Your smartphone’s quadcore is probably far weaker than a modern Dual Core. I am right now on my Surface Pro 3 and its i5U (Ultra low Voltage Dual Core) will outperform any quadcore of a smartphone (think about the temperature a potent quad core would generate, it can’t on such a small device like a smartphone, so it MUST be a weak quadcore. My Surface has a small fan to avoid throttling due to temp problems etc.). The problem is the thermal design. Multi core is useful for multitasking, and for the weak smartphone apps, a 500 MHz Quad can be suitable. Legacy programs need more “raw power” (I hear Tim Allen howling here… Too much HOME IMPROVEMENT!) It’s too much to explain here but surely not as easy to say what you said. Leave alone if it’s x86 or ARM.
To OP: We need your graphic card’s model and the driver. Or your CPU. If it’s a 2006 AMD or a 2008 Core 2 Duo then you are already on the limit. An intel integrated graphic card might render the majority of the features of the game but some are not supported and require either a different (updated) driver or a more potent hardware. Or you are low on memory. Or decompressing/handling those textures is too much for your CPU. Etc..
For example: On my i7 Quad with my GTX970 I have everything on Ultra and FullHD. My GT540M in my old laptop, also a i7 (mobile) Quad could not even handle it in that level and only up to 1280×720. Just to give you an idea how complex that is.

I only started to play this game because of Engineers. After FF14 I wanted something off of the mainstream BS and when I saw an Asuran engineer I bought the game and pre-ordered HoT. Ingame, I rarely see any Engineer and I am kinda glad for some reason. In my guild with like 50 guys there are two engineers; one is me.
All the cons (when it comes to gameplay) was the reason to play it. Throwing grenades at rabbits its the most satisfying thing! Plus it fits my Asura pretty well; tinkering and building / engineering stuff and the operation of those weapons/tools in order to compenstate for physical size and strenght.
Without Engineer, I’d probably not playing and spending money for Gems.
I actually would LOVE to have that backpack that looks like the MedKit. In one or two missions you can actually pick it up to heal/revive NPCs and it looked awesome.
Sounds pretty nice and I can understand it, but I just got dragged down in League (that’s why I have some time to write^^) by 4 total incompetent players not even able to speak English and that totally made me angry (Hey, at least I admit it!).
The combat is fun .. maybe, but I am engineer… I like it, but it does not seem to be good for PvP.. scratches head
So I guess I better wait.
I am an Asura engineer. The idea of small people coming over their diminutive size and stand equal by engineering, building and using tools and weapons is a perfect synergy. Plus, I always play midgets..
But “recommendations”… It’s totally up to you. I started out with a rifle, but once I got the taste of up to 3 different conditions (bleeding, burning, poisoned) I rather wield dual pistols. I only use turrets when I need aggro to be splitted or to hoard (a bunch of mobs will attack the flame turret, I throw grenades (or shoot a poison shell at them from the grenade launcher) at them, use the pistols blowtorth and then equip the flame thrower to make a bunch of accumulating numbers appear).
The gameplay styles are so different that I really recommend you to try it everything by yourself. There are no disadvantages. What you see in the first levels is what it will be like in the later levels, too. So if you can’t stand pistol(s) at Level 20, screw it and try the other way. Or use your tools only etc.
Engineer is a wonderful class.
This defeats the “People who play online games never will get married” nonsense!
Too bad interesting players I meet are guys…
Why is the red text of the numbers so much blurrier than the rest of the image?
/squints
Video and graphic compression, especially JPEG compression, butchers red colour ranges harder than others on lower (70%) quality ranges. You can tell from the grain around the letters the JPEG encoder is set to around 70%. With PNG or BMP this wouldn’t happen ;-)
So, it’s me ending up here asking for a serious answer if the PvP of this game is worth joining? I haven’t played yet, I am also just mid-40 level-wise, but from what I have read, the PvP in GW2 seem to be so flawed at many aspects it’s not supposed to be fun at all.
I play a well-known other game by RIOT Games for 5.5 years. And the biggest problem there is the faulty matchmaking. The actual skill was not the reason for a win or loss. It was the amount of ragequitter, “lagger” and how many newbies (like me, oh the irony) were dragging down skilled players.
When I browse the web and forums, people show the worst (“matchmade”, thus forced) setups ever. Since I have no one to play with me, SoloQ would be the only choice. Reading about a basically non-existant matchmaking of GW2’s PvP on top of a non-existant seperation of Solo and Premade players sounds so horrible that I have never considered trying PvP.
On the other hand, a healthy PvP can make a game being immortal. Even if the content is done, PvP will always be a new challenge. That’s why I am lurking, but the question is still:
Would you recommend a newbie really to join/join right now? From all the reading it seems Arena Net is trying to fix stuff yet people bring up all the bad points I never could stand in any matchmaking game:
- Good players being placed into bad teams, divide by (numbers of players) = Match for example. The good player will either faceroll or being dragged down. Are the teams fair?
- Premades vs Solo players. It DOES NOT WORK. Period. No matter how many handicaps added.
- Stomping and Win/Lose streaks for no apparent reasons
But people still play it, too. So it can’t be that bad. Or…?
