and politically highly incorrect. (#Asuracist)
“We [Asura] are the concentrated magnificence!”
The main reason why I quitted FF14 and went over here was because Square Enix did this every patch. Nerfing everything and giving it for almost free (if continuos player) or free (for re-subscribing). I think doing it once is fine.
I haven’t used a single level up item (forgot the name), all levels are done by wandering around and shooting, burning and poisoning foes. Squeenix pushes people into engame, neglecting the joy of character development and then you got a bunch of high-level noobs (in this case newbs/noobs) in endgame.
A video game is like a good cigar. Slowly and enjoyable. Not skipping to the end.
So.. uh… Europeans are left out of that “chat” because of the time zones or am I totally wrong?
So, the staff that lives on the west coast of the US should stay up 24 hours to cover everyone else’s availability?
I actually deleted that post because I figured out it is roughly 19/20 (7/8 pm) here. I simply overlooked the minus for some reason^^ Too bad the forum glitched up and I had to delete it again in a new tab, enough time for you to catch my failure
But apart from that and just for the records , why not? Why would you leave out the Europeans when advertising such an important things? Are our Euros / British Pounds less worth or are we 2nd class customers here? I noticed stuff like this happening at US companies often (e.g. RIOT games).
We can scratch that since I was wrong, but I hope you got my point, too. It’s the “EN” forums, not “NA”.

The internet is pretty much the worst thing to happen to humans, atrocities and disasters aside. I feel bad for anyone born after about 1985. Never got to experience nice people.
It is only up to you.. If you don’t meet nice people since 1985 something’s going terribly wrong, maybe coming from your side. . ? Maybe it’s this “I am 40-year old and the internet is full with kids” sort of attitude despite you never know who’s on the other side of the wire that your experiences are bad? Maybe the OP has been abused by someone born before 1985 and gets positive responses by 17-year old players right now?
You, as older player (IIRC you were married and thus adult enough) you should be more positive about your surroundings instead of just shrugging the shoulders and blame “dem internet pplz”. I have met so many cool people in GW2 than in any other game and one was born 1994, the other one 1996. The general population is nice, at least in PvE. Maybe the situation are heated and they choose the not-so nice words, but hey, this ain’t a game about picking flowers..
Stay positive!
(edited by Zedek.8932)
So, nobody cares why he left. I could even that out to give you reasons why I came and stay
Been here for 10 months. Like the game in general really much, the way it plays, it looks, it feels and the story, lore and basically everything. Lurking in the PvP forums since I started, and seeing screenshots of PvP, no matter what kind, really makes me go “Do it! Do it! Try it!”.
So what’s preventing me from trying it? It reads so god awful: Meta-stuff (fine, people want to take the best way to win), a matchmaking that CAN’T WORK from the very beginning (personal ratings based on a team result that has 20% to do with your personal action? No matter how good the matchmaking could be, it’s like building the New World Trade Center on sand) and classes that might even get flamed upon for simply playing? This is like a big jar of nope.
I play LoL for 5 years and 10 months now and I just lost a game right before I write this post because I got dragged down by 4 other bad nubs that – with a proper matchmaking – should not belong into my team. As GW2 PvP nub, I would drag down other people and ruin the fun for them, the enemy would get an unjustified win and I’d probably get a bad taste of the game in general.
So: Final opinions on this season? It still makes people like me stay away from PvP of any kind, including their streams.
If I would know it could “sink” into the rating I belong to, might it be rock bottom, I’d swallow that bitter pill. But it doesn’t seem like that for the aforementioned reasons.
But also let’s be honest: I don’t disconnect. Why do others disconnect that often? I just have a regular €29 flatrate and connect via RJ-45. If a phone company disconnects your calls every once in a while, you wouldn’t stay as customer there.
But apart from that “Sorry, I laaaag”, “Sorry, I D/C!!!!” and stuff like that that makes me wonder on what awful hardware you play or ISP you feed with your money I think a pause function would make sense. If they can’t reconnect within a certain amount of time they can decide to surrender – to avoid ragequit abuse.
EDIT: I just overread the ESL in the thread title and thought it derailed to a general D/C topic. My bad!
(edited by Zedek.8932)
This thread reads like the LoL community.
I play LoL (League of Legends) since 2010. And back then, there was no meta. Then people abide the meta and get sick of it more and more. But instead of not putting those limits onto themselves, they complain in the forums, as if the game forces you somehow. (It does in certain modes; do not play them).
I am very happy the way it is. In FF14 I had many “armors” (if you want to call mage clothes ‘armor’) that were beautiful but I had to replace because them with newer models – the replacing mechanism (called “glamour” IIRC) was/is incredible expensive and not to achieve for an average player.
But I have found one set I L O V E: The “Noble” set.
And I might put that on as much as I can. Before, well, the sets I had/saw were often ridiculous. My first few clothes in the game looked like a sofa being strapped to my body with tape, the successor looked like the cover of a 70s car’s backseat… But now I am happy to have something that goes well with my top hat (and Asura in general) Also, the colouring possibilities are great! Shadow Abyss as well as Shadow Red and Brick are great colours.
Even though I have to admit it only fits Asura well. The same happens to FF14. The Evenstar set – my favourite – looks only nice on Lalafell.
I can understand the thread creator though. I also found it hard to dress my alternative ego in something I feel well. In the end, my ingame clothes finally look close/r to my real-life outfit also colour-wise.
(edited by Zedek.8932)
Like in Borderlands: Push E for 2 seconds and skip the waiting.
One time those nasty Charr that downed me ran right out of my range and sat there bleeding to death. That was terrible. My cute, little guy
Not quite a lie but kinda stupid still when my Asura was telling one of the Inquest dudes in a cutscene that he should change the wardrobe because there are more colours than red and black – while only wearing dark red and shadow abyss (black) myself. I bursted out in laughs because it was one of the “WTF dude” moments.
(edited by Zedek.8932)
Sorry to interrupt your melancholic and nostalgic “good times are over” postings, but for someone who joined roughly a year ago, I want to mention (to everybody outside the game who’s reading the forums) the game’s PvE/Levelling is still fun and also rewarding with the bonusses each level. It might have changed but is still on top of the MMO average.
One thing?
Well, I love two things… But as German, I can use a grammar trick: Compound nouns!
Alright:
Asura-Engineer.
Being a diminutive creature that builds, constructs and invents machines and weapons that compensate for the small stature is plausible thing (unlike Asura guardians). But in general, I like multiple things about those two.
Asura
I always play small races. Lalafell in Final Fantasy 14, Tristana was my first char in League of Legends almost 6 years ago. While in LoL, the races are not relevant, in FF14 the Lalafell are treated like cute merchandise things. They do not really have any relevance and story-wise, it just sucks so much I quitted before… some of them die. Whatever.
In GW2, the Asura are the real opposite.
They know they are a powerful bunch. The snobbish attitude is cute. They know they’re needed in Tyria. They are respected (well, Charr treat us..uh…not so nicely. But we don’t mind I guess) Despite they go up to a Norn’s belt, they’re condescending and sassy. Simply because THEY CAN! Also, as someone of Anet said in 2011 in an interview (I closed the tab and can’t find it anymore…) that they’re at the borderline of being cute and evil. I feel totally happy when playing an Asura and it’d feel wrong to me when I’d play anything else than an Asura. Great design in any way!
The first conversations of the NPCs in Metrica Province made me instantly smile. Those Asura kids making ‘Yo mama’ jokes. The messages delivered by Golems and the reactions of certain krewe leaders to them. The chatter during gameplay. And the long ears. The animations are beautiful. Strafing, running (and stopping), jumping, jumping while running. They can be as evil, bad or condescending as they want: I’d like to hug and cuddle them. Even the old ones. That look like the Halloween pumpkin from the last year….
Engineer
I quitted FF14 and was looking for a game. I watched a dozen of GW2 videos and was like “Meh…”. Then, there was that female Asura. Waving into the camera. In a pink gear. Then the camera zoomed out, she pulled out the flamethrower and grilled NPCs. I went from “Meh” to “Wowowowwo!!!!” in a split second.
I do not care about the other classes, because this is the perfect class for me. The gameplay is like a 3rd person shooter to me. In a fully-fledged MMORPG environment. They’re also perfectly integrated. Unlike other games that add nonsense like “Pirates” or “Ninjas” which are totally out of place, the Engineer can stand right to a Guardian or Mage – and still fits in.
The gameplay is great. Nothing FOTM about it. I rarely see other Engineers but that makes it even better. I also feel like there’s always the right tool or weapon for everything and the gameplay is fun. Keeping the conditions up, throw grenades, put a bunch of enemies on fire with the flamethrower, switching back, shooting a poison gas shell from a vintage point and get myself a stimulant from my Med Kit.
I might play sub-par, but the way I play and enjoy this class it’s perfect to me.
Also, I like both the look and feel of the class AND the race.
The one is my wallpaper, the other is my Windows Login-Screen.
Both is self-explaining :-)
(edited by Zedek.8932)
I’d like to see what of the conditions does more in actual combat (burn or poison) so I can see if I should rotate differently. I just see the flame/skull popping up and the only thing I can do is either trying to roughly calculate during gameplay or do spend a lot of time of theorycrafting with the numbers in the tooltips.
I can’t see anyone being raging in games like UT or other games with a scoreboard. People with the lowest frags were the bobs, but nobody was mad. Maybe, people changed meanwhile.
I don’t feel it’s static. FF14 is static. People are just standing at their corner to provide quests no matter if the pure sun or a thunderstorm is near to it, they never actually talk to you (just waving around your hands and no voice-over) and everything is in the instances.
In GW2 it’s very pleasing that merchant Charr I was about to talk to was on a mission in the nearby cave and came back with a bunch of players that participated. Also that many NPCs have fun lines to listen to. Bots in the Metrica Province running around, delivering messages. Enemies that start quests, waypoints that are inaccessible because it is currently under siege etc.
GW2 has the right balance right now. Any tilting in either way would be bad.
Or do you mean changes in the large scale? I was referring to the general PvE status (what you were talking about).
(edited by Zedek.8932)
Well, he is “at fault” if he has the ability to boot the OS that natively supports the game he desire to play (via Bootcamp, OSX comes with a native Windows solution for a reason) and still do not want to it, well, it’s up to him.
It’s like saying to SONY: “Man, make me that Final Fantasy to run on PC” or “Man, make me that SNES game run on my MegaDrive”. Just get the machine you need.
Hey, welcome to the game! I hope you have many years of fun in Tyria!
Hope the game stays for so long though. . . . .
I feel like I am already to late to the party starting in 2015.
You should be pretty fine. i7-3770, 16 GByte RAM and 670 here but I don’t get as smooth framerates as in, say, GTAV because GW2 is not quite optimized. Even in Metrica Province it ranges from 64 to 27, depending on far I can see.
How to say that now.. But aren’t you OSX and Linux guys not quite aware that “Windoze iz only for gaiming”? You are not the target group and things have changed.
After all, if you don’t want to reboot, it’s your fault and you should not want developer time get devoted into niche OS. I also have a MacBook, but I use Bootcamp.
I don’t see any P2W in this game. You just get more tools at your hand, but well, it’s like the VIP zones in clubs. Just pay a little and also enjoy it. It’s not like this is only for millionaires.
Back in the days, we all bought games. Or coppied the floppies..Looks at 6 floppies with DooM 2 as a ARJ archive But in general it’s “pay and get the service”. Now, they get 90% free service and complain that they don’t get the last 10%.
“Personal” scores based on the team’s result where you have 20% influence. Yo, makes sense.
I bought it before reaching 80s to support ArenaNet.
This should not even a question when you have a job or income.
As student or kid, you might consider what has already been written.
I stopped at the “bad internet” part.
Do you ride a bycicle on the highway? No?
Do you play a real-time M(!)M(!)O(!) with a bad connection and/or bad infrastructure at home (e.g. only 2 bars Wifi signal)?
I am happy with the one class I am playing. And the way I play it.
Starting LoL in 2010, the game was fun, even with those like 15 heroes to pick. Then the meta started and all builds and lanes were so static that you get flamed for not following the (unwritten) meta.
In GW2 I promised that I will never look up any sort of meta or “What do other say” nonsense. The reason why I still enjoy the game despite being slow: I just play every 2nd or 3rd day. It’s like a cigar. Smoke it, but slowly. Enjoy it. But who smokes two good cigars in a row? Second reason is that both my race of condescending, long-eared midgets and the class I play as combine to an ideal character I feel very good playing as.
Playing a generic human or one of the millions of Charr and only FoTM nonsense would hate me playing the game.
My Asura Engineer however is pretty unique and the gameplay is very diversified. I love him.^^
Oh, and coming from Final Fantasy XIV:
Black mage: 5, 2, 2, 2, 9, 3, 1, 1, 1, 3 repeat
Bard: (doing stuff until your TP – some sort of mana – runs out)
Scholar: 4, 5, 3, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1…
In Guildwars I switch between the weapons like crazy to keep up all the effects. It’s a goal for me to have all my foes burning, bleeding and poisoned all the time, in between throwing and aiming grenades and the Kim Jong-Un rocket (rocket tower’s tool belt skill). Like this circus game with the spinning plates, there is always something to do. Of course I could just use the flamethrower all day long, but then I’d end up in your state.
(edited by Zedek.8932)
So this thread is basically putting the spotlight on all the reasons why I would like trying, but never actually will try PvP in this game. It’s a failure on paper already.
Too bad because the game is almost perfect, except for this. Like a beatiful chandelier with a bunch of broken lights. It’s just not enjoyable . . .
Thanks for saving me frustration though. I’d have no problem with sinking to the “noob pool” where I would belong to, but there is no such thing because of sporadically added “good” players that do not belong into my rubbish league…
If you have the money on your hands I’d suggest you to pick some nVidia card of your choice. Raw processing power should be more or less equal (not like the 90s where AMD overtook Intel in the CPU department and even Cyrix was coming close…) so there is not “Only buy THIS” sort of argument but I experienced less power consumption and thus heat generation with my nVidia cards. I have a midi tower (the smallest towers) and heat is important to keep an eye on especially when it is supposed to be as silent as possible with a fan design. I am running a GTX970/i7 3770 combo and I also have some framerate issues in certain areas in 1080p/Ultra so there are clearly other bottlenecks around as you have already been told.
Plus, “ShadowPlay” is for me as Youtuber a real killer feature.
(edited by Zedek.8932)
Inspired from this epic adventure, I tried it but “I need a key” to open that kitten Level 2 door…
Somehow I think it’s kind of scary that most people who reply are in the least past their 30’s, giving the image of this being the average age of the forums’ users.
Why is it scary you ask?
Because more than half of the posts on these forums are an abundance of salt, name-calling, plain hatred or insatiable desire.I suppose it’s those of around my own age that act like this.
Just makes you think if there’s a certain group of teenagers raging or if it’s the grumpy elderly.P.S.
I’m in my mid-twenties.
I’ve had this sort of response kinda often in League Of Legends. Why would adults not have emotions (rage) or want to fight back unjustified arguments (whine)? Sometimes there are people asking why a 40-year old would “still play video games”? It is basically like asking where there are wars on the world, since they’re started by “mature” people that should know better not to kill and fight over land and ressources; we could share, right?
Conflicts, emotions and all that stuff that makes a living being / a thinking and feeling individuum of whatever of all ages – and the reason why this game exists. It’s called “Guild Wars” in the end, not “mature characters pick flowers together”. It’s a part of social life and depending on how much can handle it, you’ll live trough it.^^
Raids themselves are fine, it really just depends if they are forced on you.
Coming from FF14 and sitting there forever or changing your real-life shedules just to meet the guys to do some raid/dungeon for the 192x time in order to progress a little is a terrible idea.
In GW2 however I sometimes log on for 30 minutes. Not because the game is bad and I want to leave ASAP or for the boni you get from loggin in, but just for the sake of being there and soak up some weird chat of my guild.
So, if they are there as an option, why would you think they could be bad? If they are forced on you, they still would not be “bad” per se, but a junk of the community might be left out – the solo players.
You are correct, the OP did make a follow-up post… and it was a very angry post.
~EW
That’s not true. You have to differ irony, sarcasm and anger. And there was nothing from the latter. Why would I get angry about a forum post? I am too old for that stuff .
My response was not angry at all, it was highly sarcastic but never insulting or abusive.
If someone is down, he didn’t die from a heart attack for no reason. He dies because there is a threat nearby. Answering with “Just walking there and press F [you dumb..s]” is not quite helpful at all, it’s passively agressive. “Passively” because there is nothing wrong with the statement in the first moment, but reading between the lines makes it clear. I have been ridiculed several times by “not knowing to press F” and like being too dumb to know basic things after 8 months.
I explained the situation in an event preventing me to ressurrect someone next to me because I was almost down and the other was downed – due to being in a grenade impact zone. It felt like in “Saving Private Ryan”. I even wrote that to make it more clear, me hiding under a porch roof thingy but could not restore health fast enough to survive a blow or two.
The post was about the situation of someone downed next to me while being in an impact zone of grenades during an event. I could not simply walk there and “magically standing there to press F to rezz”. Since all were coming up with “OMG, just press F” I replied to some of the guys with ingame or real-life examples.
For example, I quoted "Fluffball"s and said “anyone could walk in a burning house and put out a fire. Who needs fire training?”. Just as possible that I could go to to that downed person in that situation and press F and get killed by the grenades as well. Nothing more.
Another response I wrapped in was to Deedrick that we could really add his suggestion to a training scenario and “make people suiciders, right?” by ignoring hazards and get yourself in danger, too. And that I rather ask about proper moves rathern than just knee-jerk reactions that puts both lives into danger.
To “mostly harmless” I said something like: “If people pick fights they can’t obviously survive they shall die and we all know this kind of players”. There is nothing “leet” about surviving but I’d also like to get him/her out of the danger zone but without adding myself to the bodycount. I told him to “be quiet” (including the
!)
I was basically responding to all the condescending responses. Not even angry, as said. I am still baffled this was reportable at all, next time I keep a copy of it, because right now, you can make up false impressions since it has been deleted and you think “Wow, this must’ve been a total jerk reply because the mods removed it for a reason”. It was not. EDIT: I have the message since I get a copy of it in the inbox. I think I recalled the content quite well and I still do not see anything bad about it. Weird that I can get called dumb indirectly and that’s fine. Good to know, I will adapt this bevaviour then.^^ Poking is not a punch, I see. So I poke from now on in small doses and avoid being reported this way (?). It was a default mod response anyways, probably not even willing to read into the thread at all.
The rest of the post was actually about thanking the others that I have no real healing/helping ability as Engineer that could help and that I accept this since I am not primarily a healer class. And that I am not a jerk by watching them die and laugh because this thread would not exist in the first place. This thread is rather an evidence I want to help my fellow players.
That’s all. Since I write a lot, it was quite a wall of text. I am not this kind of person who pulls out 2-liners. I am not the facebook/twitter generation. Maybe it was the amount of passive aggressiveness/sarcastic stuff that added up to a threshold and it got removed.
The tone of the responses after my deleted one seem to be more understanding. If it would have been HIGHLY offensive, they would have responsed differently and also yelled “OMG REPORT THIS POST”. No, they were giving good answers, and I am very thankful, because that’s what I wanted to know in the first place! :-)
And just check your “sincere” responses Fluffball. And that you wanted to help me.. Check the responses explain in a beautiful way there are other classes that have shields and protect skills. And now check you and your compagnon’s “Just press F, dummy” sort of messages. And now judge whose were sincerely helpful and whose not.
“Pressing F” and put myself in danger to death instead of asking if my class has a tool/skill to help from a far effectively is just “You are too dumb to play”. Not only once, it happened 3x in a condescending matter. You are passively aggressive yourself but when someone stands up you are covering self-pity. Don’t give it if you can’t take it, man. I also contacted a moderator because I don’t want to take it unanswered that I have to stand utter sarcasm but when giving it back with even examples why your responses are wrong it’s suddenly “angry” and “reportable”. Is this your way to shut down uncomfortable answers to your (false/abusive) posts?
I also slowly respond because I only read the forums on my tablet^^
(edited by Zedek.8932)
…and probably of all the MMOs out there!!
Hands down!
We play the coolest class. We rock, we have fun gameplay and can do everything.
And you know it!!
(Asura) Engineer forever!!
… as Engineer?
Is this possible at all?
I have been in the awkward situation where someone died nearby me (usually I laugh my kitten off when people are not cautious and die, I have died 8 times in 8 months according to /deaths) because I did not know what to do. Usually I just figure out who he or she is attacking and shoot them down to 10% so he gets his last hit but isn’t there a way where I can treat him directly?
Okay, in short: I do not want this creepy stuff to happen all the time I come close to any obstacle.
The information made my head spin a little because I was looking for the info I wanted, but I might have overseen it. Especially as German, I could grasp the basics yet I still can’t use the information to solve my problem:
The same problem I had over in FF14: As fan of diminutive races, I usually have the camera close to my character, in the case of my Asura I usually have it right behind him. I strafe a lot and it feels pretty nice to play this way. But I changed some slider to a value that I can also zoom right into my head. He turns invisible/translucent a bit but I can see my eyeballs from the inside. That is creepy bullkitten. How can I turn that off, I must have something to do with the sliders. I want to have the camera as closest to my Asura’s back when zoomed in (over the shoulder view), but I can zoom in a few more centimetres and always have to scroll back a little with my mousewheel. Running alongside a wall, hitting an obstacle, makes the camera zoom into my head instead, so it avoids collision with the obstacle but instead forces a colission with my character.
Any suggestions?
When I go into an area with many enemies with my engineer and try to survive as long as possible. When the first ones are down the next one respawn behind my back. It’s a bit like in GTAV, when I enter the subway with 5 stars and see how long I can survive with my guns and grenades. (Wow, the analogy^^)
Also, wenn I have some enemy/team fight I pick alone. It takes forever and multiple attempts because I have to flee, but still, I have only 7 deaths yet and I do not want to die, so I am thrilled. If I’d go save all the time (making the fights boring on purpose) of course I’d not be thrilled………..
The amount of error 90000(00)? in FFXIV is ridiculous.
Another error starting with 9xxxx and ending in a random number is also happening quite frequent. I also see many people in dungeons suddenly dropping. So no, FF14 has worse connectivity.
I had one disconnect in 8 months in GW2.
And yesterday evening it said I have no connection to guild servers while I did connect fine^^
Why would I try it out in the first place?
“Uh, it’s chocolate ice cream. And I do not like chocolate at all. But I ate so much vanilla ice cream (GW2) so I might try chocolate anyways.”. BLARGH “Guess what, I tell you something: It’s chocolate, and it’s awful”.
I am fine with GW2 (or the other games I play). And I stick to them.
I also don’t think “Oriental” is bad. There are even potato chips with that flavour “Oriental”. Or “Oriental Carpets” shops.
Whatever, I’d like to be able to join the Inquest. This morale stuff is annoying. They have Plunka and I prefer her over Zojja. I do not want to be forced to be on the pseudo-good side. And let’s already get rid off the rats (Skritt). AFAIK, Charr would like to help…
I think this has been said already, but I come from 17 months of Final Fantasy 14. That game was fun for REALM REBORN, but everything after is terribly bad. The other MMORPGs are not my thing (mostly due to the lack of an awesome diminutive race, such as the Asura). I just came from the FF14 forums RIGHT before entering this thread. And boy, each time I see how terribly executed FF14 is, I realize that I should’ve never waste like 7 more months on that game. That was the time where Square Enix put up waiting games, timers for EVERYTHING and the game was designed NOT to be played (sitting and waiting for parties, groups, dungeons, random events). The treadmill is RIDICULOUSLY executed they could slam a sign in your face reading: “We want your subscription to be endless so we stretch out dumb content month for month to keep the carrot-on-a-stick up even harder while not actually offering any fun content”.
Plus FF14 is utterly “unrealistic”. All characters look WAY to photoshopped. They are all in the perfect age, perfectly healthy, all are happy, the races do not rival, people say FF games have story, but nope, check the race lores of GW and FF. It’s just a description what they are like right now. And they are all happy and everything’s fine and dandy. There are no kids, no elderly people. When I saw the first old Asura that look like the old Halloween pumpkin I forgot in the backyard I was remembered how stall and overly-perfect the FF14 look is. And how much I got disgusted by it. I got tired of full-boobed Mrs. Universes, and cat people which look like they have cat ears and a tail attached to their human bodies. Not even a single freckle or spot on their skin. All comes with some sort of “We are all perfect, WARRIOS OF LIGHT” sort of bullcrap. Their is no character behind them. There are no kids, no adults, no elderly people in FF14. In GW2 however, it feels way better, not utterly perfect super models, people pick fights, NPC are actually moving and doing entertaining things, events are dynamic. In FF14 in contrast, NPCs are rooted, when they talk they wave around their hands, your guy waves around his hands too as if they had a conversation.. That’s so poor (yet entertaining on a sad level to see characters trying to explain an epic enemy by just playing Charades) Zero immersion, Zero effort. The engine is dumb (getting hit while in cover) and the fights are a memory game. You could play DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION, that’s cheaper than FF14. “But it looks good. DirectX11!! And it’s Final Fantasy”. Yeeeeeaahh, no. Just no.
I do not play GW2 everyday. But when I do, I enjoy it from the soundeffects to the jobs over the voice acting to the skills and look. The gameplay of GW2 as Engineer fills up the MMO and the Third-Person-Shooter slot for me. Perfect match. It feels and plays good and fun! It caters me the best, and I am a “new player” (June 2015), so I do not know about the “initial shine”, but guess what, I DO NOT CARE since what I am getting right now is what I love.
(edited by Zedek.8932)
That’d be cool.
The guy(s) who accepted should be marked at the map, so you can figure out if they are actually coming closer or abusing it and leaving the map.
When they ask for help in the map chat I use to act the 911 dispatcher to make them sure I am on my way (“You called 911. A paramedic is enroute. I will be there soon”)
;-)
A button would make it easier for me.
(edited by Zedek.8932)
Apart from sPvP, why don’t you just play what you enjoy?!
I have one class, Engineer, and do not even think a second of looking how others perform and/or what they are about. Because I am 150% fine with my profession. I do not want to be harsh, but go into the action and play. If you enjoy what you are doing, you are doing it right, no matter what people on the forums will tell you with their mostly highly biased and subjective opinions and theorycrafting.
I am very oldschool when it comes to this, but I do have my principles. I am there, I am representing and I am proud. There was a little FC in FF14 and it was the best place. A lucky find so to say. Nobody knew us, their were not in any ranks at the top, yet it’s this diversity that made it great. And I LOVED that.
It’s a matter of your attitude. I hate people that always seek the most shining things and leave people behind. I’ve been in many guilds in many games. They join a guild, have a good time and suddenly it’s like “hast left the guild”. I whisper them out of curiousity and their response: “Guild XYZ is more famous, screw you noobs”. I was so baffled.
I join a guild and I am loyal. When I saw that there are people here not even representing I was shocked about this in a game called GUILD Wars (^^). I am casual myself, because I have a project going on in real life, but I got removed due to the lack of activity. Which is good because this is what I want to see (active guilds), but also sad because I liked those guys. However, I think there should only be one guild and you have to represent them. Period. In FF14 there is even a 24-hour punishment for leaving a guild.
When I am joining a guild (which takes like 30 minutes of a whisper with the leader/recruiter to find out they match my style and attitude) I am there forever like the Mount Everest or the sun. When I had to leave I do explain and wish them all the best. A little ceremony so to say.
I am kinda annoyed by the attitude of many players in this regard. But then, I have been raised by good parents with manners, not selfish and social-incompetent Hillbillys.

I don’t know why I even bothered to read this.
Why would anyone reading reports like this apart from interest in the materia? Like: “uhhu, okay. Whatever”. Do you guys really, REALLY Google for this bulls…? What you are going to do? Worrying and smacktalking the game, the expansion, this, that, the weather because of the copies sold? The forums are really a terrible place :S
It’s like when I was buying the GTX970 and all the nerds were freaking out because of the memory issue – meanwhile, I play(ed) my games just fine without benchmarkings and expecting nVidia to get bankrupt. You guys should just play, too. Or quit and leave us alone with your negativity. Jesus Christ.
All upcoming games are not interesting to me. But it’s like ice cream: I love chocolate ice cream (GW2), but once in a while I want vanilla, too. But then I realize how good chocolate is (and WHY chocolate is better) and screw vanilla ice cream.
I am lurking over to FF14 and I love re-watching my videos I made, but when I see how badly executed it is I am glad I am here and discovered chocolate.. I mean, GW.
Also, I spent nights reading about GW(2) in the Wiki with my Surface tablet in my bed and it’s like reading into novel. Neither FF14 nor any other of the games mentioned have such a great universe behind. It feels arcady.
I think there is far more into a game than hypes and graphics. It must ALL come together, and this works to me in GW2 (and FF14 a bit).

Do you mean you don’t get a kick by killing those? As in: “Random bandits? Why not the Tyrian Mafia?”.
I would also love to join the Inquest. No Zojja, but they have Plunka
About your problem, well, I kinda enjoy killing Dredge and Skritt. There is only one subterannean race! #Asuracist
I like many aspects of the game. First of all, after walking past the GW2 boxes in the game stores, I feel terrible for never noticing it… It took me some other MMORPGs to know GW2 is the best (for me).
What I enjoy is that this game gives me a “happy” feeling, something where I feel good playing. I started basically watching gameplay in July 2015 and could not decide if I want to try it. Then, suddenly, some female Asura was waving into the camera and then starting to burn enemies with a flamethrower. That moment was where I literally went from “Youtube video watching mode” to “WOW, awesome, I have to play this!!”. As fan of diminutive races (Lalafell, Yordle, Asura) this game is one of the few that has small races that are NOT dwarves or gnomes. And here I go: I have my Asura Engineer. And I love both the Asuran race in all aspects, the lore behind them (could read the Wiki pages every day) and the Engineer class.
GW2 as engineer is to me some awesome mix of Third Person Shooter and MMORPG. Shooting, dodging, placing things, throwing grenades, healing myself with my medkit. Which other game delivers this sort of thing? Yep. None. The style of this game also has a lot of attitude. The splatter art. I LOVE the splatter art. Every menu in the game is an artwork. If you jump in the water, the water sprinkles around the HUD and the actual water drops at the screen are cool. These little things. I recorded some footage and slew it down to 0.25 and realized the facial emotions each time I fire a shot. Many of the emotions of my character are reflected by my ears. /cry emote, /no emote, engaged, strafing.. All looks cute and I love it.
The audio department.. My character talks! He talks like a snobbish Asura should talk. Always correct and polite. I can choose stuff. In FF14, my guy just waved his arms and he always accept stuff. Here I see my guy actually arguing and even let me decide things. My Asura asks for help, is cheeky when drawing weapons (“This will end up badly…for you”), he screams in pain, he sounds exhausted, he sounds desperate on low health; other scream in pain and doing barrell rolls when I toast them to death. I am playing the German version and the dubbing is top notch, sometimes I recognize voice actors from Hollywood productions!!
The bullet casings of the pistol even sound different if you stand on wood or concrete/stone etc. The NPCs chatters are cracking me up sometimes. The “Get a Job” Asura kids or those making Yo mama jokes. That human NPC telling the other he should never get kids. Or that Charr that disses that lazy Quaggan. That kid that annoyes the guy passing by.
The Engineer uses real weapons. The grenades he throws are actually stick grenades (not egg grenades like the icon suggests) that can actually be fired by a slightly modified rifle. So my class is using actual weapon systems from WWII.
The theme of the game manages to be funny/happy/light-hearted to serious. I am used to FF14 which is like “Someone is sad behind the house..cheer him up by dancing”. In GW2, my first mission was like “Get our project back, kill the Inquest agents, smash their lab and free hostages”. So I found myself wrecking their kitten with my armory. I still smile when remembering this moment of: “Oh god, that’s my game”.
I still wish I could join the Inqest…
The holy Trinity sucks. Being on the mercy of the tanks if you get aggro, or on the mercy of a/the healer. In GW2, everybody contributes somehow. Suddenly, there were a bunch of healing turrets and I saw fellow Engineers of all races joined my fight. In other MMORPGs, they would not give a kitten and let you die.
I am not obliged to to anything here. I buy a lot of Gems (35 EUR alone for the black/shadow abyss colour, but whatever, it’s voluntary after all^^) but I still play very slowly to enjoy this game to the fullest. I do not use those Level up items. I am only Level 48 despite I play for 7 months! I wander trough the place, kill enemies and level this way. Meanwhile, I enjoy making stuff for my desktop and logon screen… ;-)

I read both forums of FF14 and this one. And in both there is a huge negativity going on.
FF14: “How many friends have unsubbed”, “Patch 3.xx sucks”, “Too much grind”, “My FC (”guild") quited" etc..
Here it is: “HoT sucks”, “I hate PvP”, “Patch xxx sucks”.
I quitted FF14 because of their terrible nerf-politics of “Grind your %$@ off for months just to get it devalued in the next patch” and I really like GW2. It could be the first franchise I imagine to stay and support financially. All the pessimism makes me sad, on the other hand when I flip close my Surface (my tablet^^) I forget all of this and just play the game in the afternoon after work without being influenced.
I’d like to have this franchise and game grow strong and I also buy cash shop stuff because I don’t work for free either and I am used to FF14s subscription fee, so I think it’s the least to give money back to people who grant me nice gaming experience. But many people think too much into the future, as if this game is about their retirement fund. Just wait and play – or don’t. But don’t spread and repeat the stuff all over.
There are flaws but they are like little red dots on a white wall. While in FF14, the red dots are so big and close to each other that they interconnect and add together to a big red blob. I’d like to see PvP, but from what I see I would not like it right now (mostly because of the matchmaking, not because of the balancing). That does not stop me from enjoying PvE.
The game IS great. It IS fun. Just take a break or play something else; you will realize how good the game is when you look behind the facades of other games.
I don’t play PvP but browsing the forums I found this thread and the responses here made me think: Why not?
I started to play this game because I saw engineer gameplay. Bought the game and love engineer. I don’t give the slightest kitten about the other professions. Got my principles though. Same with race. Asura only. Forever.
Cheers!
I have played some terrible asia grinders. And even though I disliked the game (hence I quitted them), the grind and the time spent was a good time.
After all the games I have tried, GW2 is totally catering me. I slowly make my way up but unlike the competitors on the market, it actually works.
Of course, that’s my very personal opinion, but the amount of “Dis game sucks but I still play it for some reason”-posts made me frown.. I know, I am late to the party and discovered this game too late but I am very pleased by it.
Skritt are way cuter than Asura, so I am willing to accept your obvious statements of truth.
/threat @
Then take a break or check other games. I knew I am prone to get “overdoses” of a certain game so I rotate trough them. After 2 days of GTAV it’s great to burn down things with my Asuran engineer. Next day, I play Cities:Skylines etc.
I am a solo player. In a guild, but I don’t do anything with them, just reading the chat.
