How to block??

You can also dodge by double tapping the movement keys (ASDW). So you can roll in any direction.

To add to this, you can double tap to roll. But some professions have skills that also dodge attacks without the need for a roll. Thieves for example when equipped with a dagger/dagger can attack with Death Blossom (#3 key) which does an attack and you flip over your enemies and dodge any attacks. Ranger has an attack too for shortbow, and i think sword/dagger. Not sure about the other professions

With no ToT system, a crude way of seeing if you have aggro is if the boss turns to you. When i am dpsing as melee or ranged i stand to the sides or behind the boss. If he turns to me i will go into survival/healing mode. If i’m melee that happens right away, if i’m ranged and the boss is a melee type mob i have a little bit of time before he gets to me.

I need serious help with character names.

When people make a report using the in game system it says that any abuse of the reporting system can lead the person reporting getting the ban. Personally i dont find Blake Butterfingers offensive, butterfingers usually means a person has a tendency to drop stuff or has a trouble catching things. I would say anyone reporting that name is abusing the reporting system, and i would actually fight it and get the reporter banned.

Now if you have a name like “Johnny McDropsthesoap” then of course you would be the one guilty of a naming infraction. Yah you didnt say anything directly offensive, but it’s what is being implied. If you’re not sure then dont put any references to anatomy offensive or otherwise, dont make any sexual references no matter how vague. Dont put any racial slang offensive or otherwise. If it even has any remote chance of being associated with any of those, even if you are trying to be funny i would leave it out. Dont try and think you are being clever either by trying to hide an offensive name in plain site and trying to defend it as a legit name.

Asura – funny/cool looking animations, city design is compact and easy to navigate
Human – ok looking animations, bigger city layout is still easy to figure out
Norn – like humans but bigger, big city layout
Silvari – ok animations, layout is about the same size as Asura city but it isnt symetrical
Charr – dont know what animations look like, city layout is very confusing

I included city info, but really once you explore it to 100% then you can just get around the city with waypoints. In cities use of waypoints is free, unless you are in an instanced part of the city and you want to go to a waypoint outside of the instance but still in the city (in which case it costs a few copper). I opened up a slot for each profession, but all of them are Asura…some of the animations just make me laugh hehe.

Can someone please explain what overflow is?

in Players Helping Players

cosmatman.9306

I actually don’t understand overflow at all either. If I reserve space on a server, then why do I have to wait to be on the server? O

Server populations change all the time, people stop playing, or they play different hours and so on. If a server only ever gets to capacity on peak times say for example 2 hours of every day, then building the server to handle that capacity is a waste. I dont know the in’s and out’s of building a gaming server, but i can assume that a bigger server capacity costs more.

I played a rogue in WoW and i wanted to try out a melee thief even if pistol is better for survival. I went d/d and at first it was very frustating coming out of fights with 50% hp. Even with Death Blossom or Flanking Strike giving me an evade bonus some of my early fights still made me want to nerd rage.

I ended up respec’ing my traits and i’m at level 24 right now with 10 pts in Shadow Arts traits and starting to put points in Acrobatics. All my gear has +toughness on it, weapons and jewelry included. My armor has 6 different kinds of runes, with the 1st bonus being +toughness. I pretty much didnt worry about the 2nd rune bonuses. I probably should have went with vitality at lower levels then vit/tough at higher levels to help soak up condition damage, but its too late for that now.

World, please leave me alone!

It’s almost as though the developers have never actually experienced nature. Imagine what would happen if you went on a day hike and every time you turned a corner there were 20 bears, 15 wolves, 30 eagles, and 70 alligators all trying to kill you?

Animals don’t act like that. They try to avoid people as much as they can.

You could also say that people who have experienced nature have never experienced an in game environment before? so it works both ways. For the sake of game balance you want to have a bunch of mobs running around. Any heart objective that requires you to clear the area of <insert mob type here> means you, and anyone else in the area has to compete for the same mob. You cant have 15-20 people standing around in an area of the forest waiting for that one mob to come out or respawn because ‘in real life nature’ only 1 mob would occupy that amount of space. It doesnt work like that, you need to have a target rich environment. Playing the mob respawn waiting game is very boring, and rather then do that most people will just log off or play another game.

Sorry, it’s not a nature or social simulator

Thief Auto Attack

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: cosmatman.9306

cosmatman.9306

None of the thief mainhand autoattacks (#1 key) have any positional requirements out of stealth. When you go into stealth a sword and dagger do have a position requirement if you want to do the autoattack (#1 key) if you want to get the bonus.

Having said that, I see no advantage to turning off autoattack for any weapon. It is true that when you autoattack Lotus Strike for dagger and Crippling Strike for the sword has a slight delay (cast time you guys called it). BUT any other spell cast will interrupt the autoattack, it doesnt matter what sequence the autoattack is in. You can be in that pause/cast right before Lotus Strike but the moment you press Heartseeker or Death Blossom or any other spell, the autoattack is stopped and the spell you activated will go off.

EDIT: i play a dagger/dagger thief and i actually wait for my autoattack to hit with Lotus Strike. Lotus Strike is the third hit but it hits for the same amount as the second hit and it also leaves a poison on the bad guy. The poison also leaves a -33% healing condition on the enemy (useful in pvp, or vs healing pve mobs). Waiting for Lotus to hit also gives me a chance to regenerate some initiative.

So a common rotation for me going into combat:
-death blossom
-1 2 lotus strike
-death blossom
-1 2 lotus strike
-death blossom (or heartseeker if the mob is almost dead)

Or tell me, how do you deal with a ranged class that do more damage then you? The only thing I found to deal with it is to use high DPS skills to get it down before it kills me, but we don’t have one. Turrets can’t tank, and use them as bombs is not something that I would like to use, because there are better utility skills to have then that.

Edit:
@Reonhato.5914
I know very well of the grenade build, but that’s just it. Just auto attack whit 1 and then just rotate 2, 3, 4, 5, when every CD is off, but just having the grenade skill get boring after a while, and I don’t just want every engineer to only use the grenade skill just because the other weapons are kinda useless.

I’m assuming you are talking about ranged pvp classes, because so far i havent had any trouble with ranged in pve. If you are talking about pvp, you cannot expect any 1 profession to be able to beat all other professions. They have to balance things, thats why you have counter classes/professions. For example you might have no trouble with thieves, warriors, and necromancers but rangers and elementalists give you trouble because they can outrange you, or kite you or evade your attacks pretty easily. If there was a class in game that could easily beat all 8 classes in a 1 on 1 fight, then everyone would play that character.

You should look at all your traits and see which ones might be good to spec into if you are having trouble with ranged. You have traits that increase grenade range by 25%, rifle/pistol/harpoon/elixir gun by 20%. You can look at speed boosters or survival traits. Or you can just play to the engineers strengths as a support class.

A clear answer on Gear Scaling required!!!

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: cosmatman.9306

cosmatman.9306

Will it be?

Yellow Gear at 80 = 2000 Power
Green Gear at 80 = 1800 Power

Same Yellow Gear at 50 = 1000 Power
Same Green Gear at 50 = 1000 Power

Or will it be more like?

Same Yellow Gear at 50 = 1000 Power
Same Green Gear at 50 = 850 Power

It just wouldnt make sense for two sets of level 80 gear with 1 set having more of the same stats, to downscale to the exact equal number. What would be the point of gearing up at 80 and doing lower level content? you dont even have to gear up just get some level 80 vendor whites and go do some lower level events. But if you want to be sure and dont want to wait for an answer it shouldnt be too hard to test this out for yourself. Get some vendor white gear for and just swap those out in a lower level zone and see if your adjusted/downscaled stat drops even more when you equip the level 80 vendor stuff.

Yes i know… If I could change it I would, but I can’t. I can edit the text in the post, but so far the only need to editing I found is that I forgot the TL;DR note at the bottom.

I’m sure there is something in the post too, but English is not my native language.

@Amra.6028
The wrench does less damage then the rifle, maybe I wasn’t clear on that. But the melee “skill” we have is the lowest DPS on the class, the granades do more damage the the wrench.

And the playtime is 60+ hours, and the last week I been looking on other classes and testing most of the DPS pros and cons the classes have, of curse I need more playtime then a few hours on some of the classes to get everything, but I found that the engineer has the biggest problems of them I tested.

I tested Warrior, Guardian, Ranger, and Thief. My “friends” play Warlock and Elementalsit so I know on the high lvl on them.

Wrench kit isnt meant to be used as a heavy dps kit, its a utility kit just like the elixir gun kit. You use the wrench kit to repair turrets, or you switch to it so you can use its shield ability.

Also I dont think Anet intended for the engineer to be played as a pure melee class. Not of it’s slot skills help to increase your dodge. Instead you see that most of your skills and abilities root, slow and knockback enemies or they might give you a speed boost. Engineers are fine the way they are, you just have to find the class that fits your play style, not find a class you like and ask Anet to change it so that it fits your playstyle.

EDIT: also you aren’t fighting mobs alone, you can put down turrets to ‘distract’ enemies. You dont have to go into a fight and put down all your turrets, only to have no turrets for the next group. Since they have such long cooldowns just put 1 down at a time. Put a thumper turret down, then on the next group put your flame turret down and so on. I have had no problems so far with packs. I have flame wall, flame blast and a turret that will tank for a few seconds.

"Tanks" needed for dungeons?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: cosmatman.9306

cosmatman.9306

So I ask my guild, what is going on? And I get the response “well the tank needs to do… whatever.” So, what? Did ANet move away from the idea that we weren’t supposed to require a tank? Several times on their site, even to this day, after they’ve changed the site so much, they still talk about how it shouldn’t matter who’s present in the battlefield, that everyone should be able to contribute and with good communication and planning, be able to win an encounter.

It depends on the context

In EVE online for example, people use the term ‘tank’, to mean any defensive or survival capability or equipment. In WoW tank as we all know is the guy that maintains aggro, and in some niche fights non traditional tanks had to do this task too. In GW2 where there is no trinity, tank would probably have close to the same definition as EVE onlines. Whoever has the current focus of the boss or mob has to go into full defensive and healing mode (if the mob hits hard enough).

Engineer kits and autoattack

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: cosmatman.9306

cosmatman.9306

Well you definitely should have the option BUT I would avoid setting the flamethrower 1 to autoattack: not only does it have a really long cast time, but for this same reason it doesn’t need to be spammed as much as other autoattacks.

That’s just a your personal preference though, but a lot of people myself included like having it set to autoattack. Its not the fact that it doesnt have to be spammed cause of a short channel duration. Its just 1 less thing to worry about when you have it set to autoattack. Also even though it does have a channel using any other ability during that channel stops it.

Any engineer kit end up suffering from the same problem when you switch back and forth to it…wrench kit, elixir gun, etc.

EDIT: although part of me things the not having autoattack might have been intentional for balance reasons. Since we can switch back and forth between kits and not have to worry about cooldowns.

Turrets, pets, illusions, summons...huh?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: cosmatman.9306

cosmatman.9306

sorry if someone has already mentioned this

Regarding ‘healing’ turrets, there is actually a way for you to repair turrets. But you have to spend skill points and buy the wrench kit. Just go up to the turret and use your wrenches autoattack. I’m only a 29 eng and at my level it is kinda weak, but iirc there is a trait that improves turret healing? check yourself though to be sure.

Now about the enemy mobs attacking your turrets first, this actually makes sense, but it may have been unintended on Anets part. Think about this, if you are up against a player but their low hp pets/turrets are giving you issues would it not make sense to go over there and stomp their pets/turrets first? then focus on the actual player? I have heard of people playing WoW pvp and arenas and complaining that people would focus their pets. And thats because the pets can actually do some serious damage or cause problems if you ignore them. Besides you can play smart and actually keep bad guys away from your turrets too. If you are just 1v1 or 2v1 you can use a rifle net, or overcharged shot to keep mobs off of your turrets. On champion or boss fights i will purposely put my rocket and rifle turret at least 500 range from each other. That way when the boss kills one, he still has to walk into melee range of the other one. In that time i can overcharged and net him, giving my turret an extra few seconds of dps time.

The Little Details. Simply Amazing

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: cosmatman.9306

cosmatman.9306

I’ve noticed a lot of the little details too.

-When underwater with your weapon slung, you do the breast stroke. When you are on the surface you do the overhead stroke.

-when playing a human they actually tilt their head to the side bring their rifle/pistol up and i’m almost certain they squint one eye too.

-when playing an Asura with a staff equipped and in the ready state (after using a spell for example) wait for your Asura to twirl the staff. Now look very closely at your Asuras head movement and their mouth.

-wish there was a list of emotes, but a lot of the Asura ones crack me up. Threaten where they put up their dukes point to their own eyes. Surprised where they are scared for a second, then they stop screaming and hunch down and look and tilt their head back and forth.

-Another Asura one is when you have something like a rifle or greatsword equipped and you strafe left/right and stop watch their feet. Also with Asura and greatswords/hammers they prop it up on their shoulders when they run with it (unless it is sheathed).

Equiping my kits and having no auto cast ability? any idea's

in Players Helping Players

cosmatman.9306

I agree with the OP as well, i play an eng a lot and for the lulz or for aoe packs i will equip flamethrower. It sucks when the quest you are doing requires you to pick up an item and haul it somewhere to turn in. So you have to switch back to your kit every time, and CTRL+RMB every time. Would be nice for a menu option where you can toggle autoattack on/off.

GTAoE skills on an elementalist are a waste

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: cosmatman.9306

cosmatman.9306

I played fire staff elementalist and i actually used the GTAOE #2 quite a bit. You can dodge sideways or backwards, but dont forget you can also dodge forward through a mob. If you lay down a Lava Font in front of you a second before the mob steps into its aoe boundary then you can dodge forward once it is cast and this keeps the mob in the aoe. If you cast a Lava Font and just roll backwards or sideways this minimizes the time the mob spends in the aoe. If you roll forward you can dodge their attack, and keep them in your aoe a little longer.

You can also use Burning Retreat offensively instead of defensively. If an enemy is coming right at you lay down a Lava Font in front of you, then turn your back to the enemy and hit “Burning Retreat”. You now have the enemy sitting in two of your fire spells, a GTAOE and a spell that is normally used to retreat. When i start a fight i usually do it from max range, and hit them with fireball > flame burst > fireball repeat until they are close.

Why would any player care if attacked monster is actually capable of finding any path to him?

I remember when i was first playing LOTRO, i was on my hunter. I was shooting a humanoid mob from on top of a rock, and it would have had to walk about 5-6 seconds around to come up to me. But what i saw kinda surprised me, as i started to pew pew the mob actually jumped up to me. In WoW, you will see mobs go straight up a cliff wall, but it was pretty funny to see something jump to me.

haha sorry but that made me laugh.

i pick up banners sometimes too spamming “F” for loot so i’d like them to be lootable by the owner only as well…annoying.

Yah, first time i saw it happen i was like o.O

But i’ve had it happen when i would put it out all by itself with me right next to it. And i cant help but think the person is laughing as they run away hehe.

On my engineer i used to spam F to loot and i end up picking up my turrets too. Now i just carefully click around them, or i wait til the fight is over.

EDIT: hehe kittens…

Warriors - people running off with my banners?

cosmatman.9306

Hey everybody,

Had a question about any banner warriors. For some of the group events, i like to set aside 1 skill slot for a power or crit damage banner for anyone that is in melee range. But usually i get somebody that comes by and grabs my banner and runs off with it.

Are there plans for this to change in the future? by that i mean will the banners change from being lootable by all, to lootable only by the owner?
