You guys do realize that there are ‘several’ areas in this game which seem to be hints of raid like content right? I mean look, these dev’s are the same ones that used to work for Blizzard and some likely worked on WoW vanilla content.
The massive doors, forts you can’t enter, and other locations like that throughout the world hint at something. And as far as I know they never ever officially anywhere said they wouldn’t add raid type content. They just said they won’t have an ‘end game’ like other MMO’s. The end game is spread throughout the levels.
In an Asura zone that is I think the Metrica Province level 15-25 there is a bandit fort with a whole buttload of Champion mobs guarding a fort. You cannot enter the fort at all, but you can walk up to the doors to get the location icon credit (whatever those little squares on maps are called). Consider that they likely have a very strict NDA to abide by and cannot and will not give away information that is currently very secret.
So if I don’t want to be the best player or strive to be the most skilled player than Guild Wars 2 isn’t for me?
Did they ever really say anywhere that they wouldn’t have raids? Is there a quote somewhere or interview confirming this? I mean no raids at all in any level range?
One thing they said they were going to do was update the DE’s in various zones periodically. They say they can do this rather easily due to the kind of tech they have that is used to create them. So expect DE’s to change and not remain static over the next year I suppose.
Also, it is great that content will be provided for free! That kind of thing takes a special kind of developer to do in my view. That means they care more about making sure the game is fun, rather than doing it to boost subs or sales. It is a very awesome business practice! I look forward to seeing what these content updates are going to be down the road as a result.
I’ve been going back to my free trial version of WoW this week. It was interesting to see how it felt after playing lots of Guild Wars 2 and getting more used to it.
The thing that WoW has is structure. It does that very well and if you like that kind of thing and don’t care for freedom to roam around and do whatever you want you might love it. It does let you do what you want, but the very core of the game is very structure heavy is what I mean.
Guild Wars 2 is more like an action RPG like Torchlight 2 or Diablo III in that it lets you make custom builds it seems. They don’t seem to try and force you to play a certain way other than what restrictions your class has. But the downside is that there seems to be no real gear hunt atm, unless I am missing something. So many people seem to be talking about getting gear for skins only, and that to me isn’t sustainable for the population at large. Imo there needs to be either a gear hunt like in the above mentioned games, or gear progression. And since they already stated there is no gear progression at max level I am guess it comes down to the gear hunt and building up a custom build you can live with and enjoy. That is what I am hoping this game is aiming for anyway, but I am not sure if they have any intention of making gear important at all, or any more interesting than it already is.
The other thing is that while the dungeons are challenging in this game, they are also very tough. Even the story mode will push lesser experienced people far away from them. That is something that WoW doesn’t do currently. Now it could be that there are major bugs and balance changes needed to Guild Wars 2 story mode at least for all I know. But lastly, there are no raids. For the PvE enthusiasts that are ‘serious’ PvE’ers this is a problem. I don’t think these people will keep playing just for skins honestly. Sure there are the explorable modes, but those are still dungeons. People might say they are raids, but I guarantee that community which is skilled will eat through the dungeons in a matter of months easy like they weren’t even there. Then they will get bored, and concurrent numbers will drop.
So I see them ‘having’ to add something like raid content to the game eventually, but just not with the typical gear treadmill so many are used to. I am guessing this feature for end game progression will later be added. If anything WoW at least added a sense of progression to the story through raids that was epic, and that I will definitely miss if they don’t add something similar in this game. Massive PvE battles would just be hard to do without.
I die quite a bit. For now it seems that dying is part of the game, but at least it gives you options to make you harder to kill.
I think that the real answer to your concerns center around this being the Vanilla base of the game. Even WoW when released was said to lack any real PvE end game and even was missing quite a few quests for the last few levels. Rift has even added quite a few features over the years and improved on the overall experience in the game.
So I would say as it stands now it works, but it isn’t a very well polished game that has several years of refinement already established. It will need time to get to what people like yourself will feel they have something to work towards. As the PvE stands now it seems to lack any real ability to hold people interested long term unless they like alts.
altoholism is a very good sign that the game’s replay-ability is very good. I’d say try a Thief or Warrior. Those seems to be centered around what you mentioned in my view.
If you’re playing for loot you’re playing the wrong game.
What is the point of an action RPG with no exciting loot?
As others from various gaming sites have pointed out: It looks a LOT like an advert for The Secret World. So much you could almost see a lawsuit arising due to this.
I personally didn’t really like it. It had a deep meaning to it that seems to indicate that the game is revolutionary and will break us free after we at least take the risk and try it. If we do we will find ourselves immersed with a massive and beautiful world to explore.
Yet the meaning can also be derived from the content of the game itself, and instead of acting somewhat arrogant and over confident they could have been far more humble in message. Let the community decide if your game will stand the test of time rather than tell us what it will be for us. We are a very sensitive bunch as you know ArenaNet.
It really does. I am not trying to cause a flame war here or bash the game. The intent here is to reflect briefly some feedback I have seen from others and also myself.
The game seems to require you to heavily explore and participate in each and every zone just to level. Without doing any dungeons, pvp, or your personal story you are often times left redoing the same content or going to a new zone. That isn’t fun honestly, but rather it promotes a heavy grind.
Some have said perhaps the Karma objectives do not give enough experience. Another mention is that they are sometimes left having done most karma objectives but have to run around just to find some DE to do in order to gain more experience. Simply killing mobs alone is definitely no way to level in this game due to to the low experience they often give (unless they are well above your level).
I am not sure if it was intended that you would also be exploring with crafting and doing your personal story-line in addition to this. I do get that you can get experience from a wide variety of things, but is the zone content just filler that isn’t intended to be a main source of experience? As it stands right now though I feel forced to literally do a full zone completion just to feel close to the level I am supposed to be at. I frankly have to do other things just to level and cannot only do a single pass in that zone at my level and ding ready for the next zone.
This to me is a big issue.
It seems that from what I am seeing that there is a minor delay when pressing keys to move (WASD) or when using abilities in game.
This delay is slight, but when pressing a key down to move and releasing the key quickly it looks like the corresponding action happens on key up, rather than on key down. I say looks because this seems like a server issue or lag issue somewhere.
This can make doing things in the game feel a bit laggy and not as exciting and responsive as you would like or need for certain encounters. This is especially true for dungeons or competitive pvp.
Anyway, figured this was likely a bug with the client or server side tech. Thanks for reading.
True. In response to the topic only I have to agree. The loot dropped for the story mode doesn’t seem that great. The only thing that was really nice was the XP I got from completion.
There likely are quite a bit of bugs and balance issues to work out though. I would expect a balance pass for all classes sooner than later, and also fixes and adjustments to the dungeon encounters. It is very likely some encounters are just very buggy at the moment.
I fought a big nasty dragon! He was in a higher level zone and was shown to the whole world when the game play was first shown.
There definitely be dragons in this here game matey!
Thank you for great music, beautiful artwork, and the hundreds of hours I already got out of it. Most of all thank you for no monthly subs!
Cheers to ArenaNet for being willing to risk all to begin a revolution and jump start the next generation of MMO’s.1
Not to mention you really have to look out for those red icons on your action bar. Removing conditions is important. Sometimes I was left unable to remove them due to setting up my utility bar differently. Always make sure you have at least one ability somewhere to help remove conditions off yourself at least.
Don’t blow your karma! [SPOILER] You can buy exotic armor with karma from what I understand. The God Towers unlock vendors in the Ruins of Orr with Exotic Vendors from what I am reading or hearing others say that are doing those encounters. You will probably be able to buy one piece of exotic armor with 50k.
The cultural armor is just for the skins only…the stats are useless mostly.
There is supposed to be a reward which gives you two items you can use to craft a Legendary with. It would make sense due to this achievment taking a heck of a lot of effort! You use those items at the Mystic forge to craft the legendary from what I hear.
Then again: reddit seems to say you get 2 level 80 exotics which is pretty sweet honestly

It seems that working as a unit is what is required in this game. There is no trinity, so everyone is responsible for doing their part.
If a class can AOE heal and dps then that can help the group as it stays together. The other classes can help mitigate damage on top of this.
Ranged need to snare melee mobs as much as possible to keep them away, while melee need to use blinds on ranged. Focusing down a target with Control+T will help everyone focus on that one target at time. AoE heal while saying in a group whenever possible. Remember everyone brings some utility to the fight in a dungeon. Some mobs will move very fast, so all you can hope to do is move a little and snare while focusing them down.
Example1: Boss encounter 1 in CM. Use the fountain to mitigate the AoE damage the bot does (yes you can also use the environment to mitigate damage). With the group you will want to move around the fountain and put down aoe heals as necessary and mitigate his ranged missile attacks with damage reduction. All classes should be range attacking this boss only.
Example 2: Boss Encounter in Twilight Arbor, Faolains lair. You will face 4 corrupted versions of Tyrian Heroes: Rytlock, Eir, Logan, Zojja. The ranged are high priority in my opinion on this fight as they are harder to avoid, which would be Eir then Zojja. Logan and Rytlock can be burned down as you kite them in circles. You will want to stay together for this fight as much as possible and use all your damage mitigation skills you have in addition to AoE healing. ------The main element of this fight that is important is that Faolain needs to also be interrupted after downing each of the Heroes. It seems that simply dps'ing her to 75% helps to stop her from resurrecting them. If you fail then she will ressurect any of the Heroes you killed. After you have successfully killed each twisted version of the Heroes you can burn down Faolain fairly easy. AoE healing is important.
NOTE: There isn’t a trinity in this game, BUT that doesn’t mean you do not need at least one person with good aoe healing or a healing support build. Also, even though there is no tank it doesn’t mean you don’t need to have someone help the group mitigate damage. You cannot just hope to dodge everything. After running a dungeon several more times it will all likely be very easy. You need to work as a group to stay alive with what skills you have. If everyone has at least some toughness and extra health that is not a bad start.
