Leveling in this game is extremely easy. It has a linear (not exponential) levelling curve, meaning that every level is roughly equal in difficulty to the last because the XP rewards for everything go up even on the low level maps or when downscaled. Furthermore, eveyrthing in this game gives XP, so you can level any way that you like.
Please, if you think GW2 is hard to level in, don’t ever play any other MMO where you actually have to grind for your levels. You will want to enter a mental institution after killing something like 1,000 mobs for a single level in Everquest-style games…
P.S. You can level via WvW, Living Story or Champ trains if you prefer it fast. You can also eat food and utility consumeables for 15% bonus XP, get 30% more bonus XP from the laurel merchants daily, and get 50% bonus XP from boosters, and that’s not even counting guild banners or guild-wide boosts.
Okay where are these food buffs for someone at level 20ish? Can I get them at that level range? Can I also get the xp buff from the laurel guys without any laurels? Or are these laurels account wide?
And I have been in guilds and didn’t notice any xp buffs. Are those only from very advanced guilds?
You can buy the rice food buff at any level for very little karma. Laurels are, indeed, account-wide. A guild does not need be ‘very’ advanced to have the ability to put out XP buffs. You need not be in any guild to take advantage of Guild Banners placed out in the world. Also, XP buffs are somewhat common from AP chests, Black Lion Chests (you can easily farm keys), and elsewhere. There are also XP buffs on other consumables easily crafted by many of the disciplines.
You may find this helpful: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Experience#Experience_modifiers
That is very helpful, but the food I used did only say + 10 experience (which is apparently missing the %)
I guess karma vendors somewhere and laurel vendors could help me out some.

I just wanted to start this thread to say that I wanted a way that I could just do events and get more experience doing that in each zone. Or get a buff for killing rares and doing events, cause frankly there seem to be several that people leave by the wayside now and don’t really care about.
I’m happy that some of you find it so very easy to level up in this game. I have tried the crafting = faster leveling thing without boosts and I got 10 or so levels by hitting I think 400ish on one of them. I have done storylines, explored, and done events and still have struggled to level out of a zone. The heart quests can be helpful but for some reason are not repeatable.
I just want to have fun in the game while I am playing it and make some progress while doing so. I do not want things handed to me for goodness sakes. I have an 80 Guardian who has already completed one aspect of the story so I know mostly what it is all about. Therefore, again, I want to just do want I want in order to progress through the zones while working on getting to level 80.
Apparently some people in this thread have completely misconstrued what I wrote. Hopefully this helps those who don’t understand to better understand.
Is that it is a pain in the butt to level. I have to practically do everything I can in a zone in order to progress. This concern is not at all mine alone. I have read many other concerns as such and hate having to chase down events, world bosses, and do all the exploration and story content I can in order to get enough xp just to get to the next zone. I would love it if you guys at Anet instead let people pick and choose their content and give them the xp boost they need to level faster just doing what they like.
why dont we also get a legendary weapon of our choosing just for logging in, how about those ascended gear, we could get them too just by standing on LA fountain…
Huh? Learn to read. I said that I wanted to get more xp for doing the things that we like doing while leveling, not I log in and poof I get instant things. Are you 12?
Mad Queen I have done crafting up to as max as I could, done storyline often but not caught up with it, and participate in events out in the game world and my thief is at 24 hours played and only level 31.
I mean heck I can reach level 90 on a WoW character in 3/4 days tops.
I never played WoW beyond the trial 20 levels, and I thought the speed of progression to that height was pretty much perfect.
How does the rest of it compare to GW2? Faster, slower, more tedious, or less?
The difference is that your main source of xp is dungeons and questing mostly. Or that is the absolute fastest route with a guild xp bonus to top it off. This is considering you have no heirlooms, which are items that help to boost your experience all the way up to 85 and also levels with you.
The speed of progression is all about your leveling strategy and trying to always get the most xp if you want to level faster.
Name one other game where the AVERAGE rate of reaching max level is 5 days (and if you list Rift, you’re a liar.)
I don’t know what you mean by 5 days. Do you mean playing as little as you want for 5 days and still reaching 80, or do you mean 5 days played time? I mean heck I can reach level 90 on a WoW character in 3/4 days tops.

Yeah. No work for me tomorrow so I will be checking all this stuff out and trying out a few things they release as well!
I tend to think it isn’t necessarily about the gear, but rather accessible fun content that can be easily run by a random group. In addition, lots of fun content in PvE zones mixed in with a sizeable number of build variations among all professions to enjoy the game the way that I want to.
To me gear is boring and just increased stats over time. I’d rather see new zones for various levels added, new permanent dungeons, ArenaNets version of Raids, and more hidden things in the world to find with hidden story quests/events
You really don’t need the gear progression based system. I just think it needs to aim to be more sandbox to let people play the way they want. This in turn will appeal to them and their friends for a rather long period of time.
Thanks for clearing that up as to what to expect up ahead. I really think that the team can really improve on the density of events in low level zones making it easier to find events in teh game without some website. Maybe even adding more Karma quests in zones that seem to have too few? Or perhaps they just seem to award too little xp as I move through the game world and try to clear a path to the next area.
I think the flow in each zone could be looked at is all I am saying. Maybe is is just me, but frankly it seems like it takes forever to find things to do and then level out of a zone. I even try gathering things to add to the xp and exploring areas as well.
It is strange that you say that is the demographic they are aiming for when I have no idea where to go when I log into my low level thief. I literally got ganked several times wandering what in the world I was supposed to do. I guess hardly any events were running?
So for people with hardly any time on their hands this game is sure unpredicatable and time consuming when I have to bother looking for things to level my characters with.
Not to mention when I get confused about the odd way they designed the zones and the level ranges of the mobs in them.
If anything this game has been a huge test of my patience if not a royal pain in the butt. Perhaps though it was just that zone…who knows.
The reason the release version is the real beta in every MMO is because of two things. First, people actually care more about their accomplishments in a live version over a test version of a game. Second, they will do ‘everything’ in their power to be efficient and this includes exploiting or even creatively bypassing intended mechanics.
This is also only phase 1 of the changes incoming.
Honestly I usually just ran around and did things to get more experience. When I seemed too high for the zone I moved to the next where the mobs were at my level or higher so I could get even more XP.
If the Dailies gave me xp it was just a bonus only.

You guys didn’t read the blog. This is Phase 1 of the changes. In Phase 2 coming later they will make further adjustments to these encounters.
Read the blog about dungeons posted today in the News section.
Thank you for simplifying Arah and I apparently other story mode encounters! I was able to finish Arah with a PuG with ease and we even did the entire thing without all of us dying to any boss fight.
<Spoiler> Apparently it also no longer takes 10 minutes to kill Zhaitan with cannons at the end as well.
Appreciate this change as I just wanted to see the story without getting too stressed out.
:)
I’m guessing… this will be awful for like 99% of legit players trying to complete a dungeon… farming runs will get even more elitist and regular players simply attempting to complete a dungeon will massively suffer because of a couple of farmers…
I don’t even think I’ll bother since these dungeons seem way beyond my skill level. Unless they nerfed health and damage so they are more forgiving it seems too harsh. I’m guessing though that these changes are only a small part of the updates to dungeons still coming in the upcoming months.
The ascended gear only has like a few more stats. It’s such a small number people are missing by not having it.
Op needs a job at ArenaNet. That idea is simple and brilliant. I love it!
This game is horrible. IT is a clunky piece of crud that doesn’t work well at all. The population for it will likely continue to fall as well.
I don’t see this continuing to be popular except to a small group of MMO gamers and former Guild Wars gamers. It was nothing like what we were led to believe it woudl be.
Complete waste of money and time. Just avoid it.
I was infracted for this post for some reason. Apparently the forum conduct rules here just let them infract you for anything. Be careful.
I don’t give a kitten about skill. I just want to have fun while leveling and not be required to be some professional gamer in order to have fun.
Screw skill. Who am I bragging to about my skill in Guild Wars 2 anyway? you? People I don’t even know or care about frankly. Sorry but you are nothing but random internet people to me. And no I won’t ‘feel pride’ cause I can skillfully press some buttons and learn some rotation that goes on and on and on until I kill something.
I don’t want to be an awesome gamer at all. I don’t want to have to be skilled at all. I just want to play a game and have fun without some sad low life’s breathing down my neck telling me I am doing it wrong. Why do I have to do everything perfectly and one way that some small group has deemed ‘the right way to play’?
I don’t want to play the way you want. I want to simply have fun, to feel powerful. Games to me at least are nothing but an escape. I don’t need them to boost my self esteem for goodness sakes.
Dynasty Warrior All The Way!!!!
What don’t you play this famous action game, you are able to 1 vs 20+ foes and kill 3000 foes in 1 single battle, why bother GW2?
If this is true I will definitely need to check this game out

I also don’t really enjoy the long cooldowns and short durations of utility spells. A lot of seems to restrict too heavily and keep me spamming weapon skills more often then I would like. Allowing for lower CD’s and higher durations of utilities skills would allow me to use those abilities more often.
I can’t really get into this games underlying ARPG combat system. It feels limited in terms of fun due to attempts to balance it for esports. I love seeing high damage and blasting my way through enemies in an arpg, but this MMO has nerfed that system to the point where you have to play dodge with enemies. Not to mention the veteran and champion mobs reward for taking them down is considerably disheartening. I really don’t know what these devs were thinking honestly.
Maybe they were attempting perfection in every way and the game as a whole suffered in attempts to bring balance to the whole game. I want to level another character, and I want to enjoy the leveling process and feel rewarded for doing so as well. Yet, leveling seems far too painful and annoying in many ways as well. I really hope that things change, but as they stand now I can’t really get into this game. The reason I feel its needed to bring this up is because honestly this game requires me to pay nothing monthly, and yet I would rather play another game monthly and feel powerful and enjoy lots of content then do what I can do in this game. This game needs a lot more fleshing out. Hopefully in time it will get there as it is still young. When that day comes I will likely play this game like crazy, but as it stands now it didn’t pull off what I had hoped it would.

Hope you all have lots of great holiday food and drinks, laugh, share stories, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
This game isn’t like WoW in combat design. The design of this game is centered around an action RPG style combat like you would see in Diablo III; except Anet’s version. We will likely never see the trinity added into this game, and aggro management isn’t something that really works for adequate periods of time. A dungeon finder is in the works for the game, and this might mean that dungeons will be simplified for random PuGs imo.
The current state of the game is that the company will be releasing a patch to rework the dungeons and also address zones when it comes to leveling content. They will also be making it possible to get ascended gear across more than one in game activity, so that lots of different gamers can earn this.
Guild progressive content is likely to be added in around Spring 2013 as well. My guess is they heard peoples cry for larger group content, and so that will likely end up being more end game centric for WoW players, or ex-WoW players. In my opinion if you have nothing wrong with learning about monster affixes and how to counter them with your professions abilities then you will do fine. There is still a decent variation to what professions can do, and so I recommend trying out many different combinations of them to see what you like. 10 levels might be enough to get a good enough idea.
For the most part this game is here to stay.
If someone is saying things like ‘learn 2 gdn u noob lol’ then they are probably really really tired, drunk, or very young.
I wouldn’t bother even paying them any mind.
I think I have almost 1k, woohoo!

Hey there Kolhara
The above is the forum for new players where you can get help with just about anything.
The problem with that though is on my wife’s laptop, the game won’t install with the discs, it just installs the downloader and starts downloading…
Well that does suck then. I wasn’t aware it did that and assumed it had at least a stable prior version on it.
I could see the point of going glass cannon as ranged, but glass cannon as a melee character would be rough. I don’t see how a Guardian could go glass cannon and not die a lot. The whole point of glass cannon is to kill things so fast it makes the whole argument of survivability moot. It’s great for people who love to crush things quickly.
My advice for those that have bandwidth restrictions and/or don’t want to wait to download is to get the box version. That way you will have a disk on hand if you ever want to do a faster fresh install later on for whatever reason.
In fact, I also don’t care about fractals. If I am bored with a game and feel I have gotten all I can out of it I usually don’t even bother with it ever again. Getting the best gear in a game isn’t compelling or interesting to me.
What I would like to do is be able to have fun running dungeons, or redoing zones that have fun and exciting content. I really hope the upcoming February patch helps people like me who want to love playing in this gorgeous game world without feeling bored to tears. I tried pvp maps but no one was in any of the game browsers, and that system seems archaic compared to rifts and wow’s que system btw. WvWvW seems fun for awhile but all you really do is zerg in it…which really isn’t that challenging. It isn’t totally terrible but just uninteresting to me after awhile.
I’m not one of those players who makes spreadsheets and theory crafts by pulling apart how each class works and all their bells and whistles. Frankly if I have to theory craft and read long articles on how to play a game it shows the game didn’t do a good enough job showing me its mechanics. Having the best gear isn’t important to me, nor is playing the most OP’d version of a class. Frankly I just want to have some casual fun, but don’t feel like I can and be rewarded for it. And by casual I mean content that isn’t too hard, and requires some effort but not much. Some aspects of this game seem to be really hard for me, which is why I don’t bother with dungeons or fractals.
Maybe the game world could drop better loot from veteran mobs and champions for those that bothered to do them. They aren’t too hard most of the time. And perhaps there could be more minidungeons that offer nice loot for those that want to do them as well. But as it stands right now I feel bored, and that is mostly cause the low level zones have events that usually are more fun when many people are around. It seems moot to do them solo and try to level. So better rewards from doing events, vets, and champions in the world would be a good start. And perhaps less health for the champions?
Arenanet a lot of your game is just really tough. For those that like to treat games like they are real life I am sure they are happy. I am sure the players who like a challenging game are also happy. Yet, softcore-midcore players like myself probably feel left out like I do. Fun personal story though! I actually didn’t mind Trehearne.

I feel that the zones quite often do not reward enough experience, and the events are frustrating to try and find and track. Also, the combat is rather complicated and involves lots of abilities/spells in combination with quite a few major traits combinations. The amount of complexity to the professions customization system throws me off frankly. Take for instance that you likely will have to carry all your weapons in your bags to be as viable for any situation as possible. In addition, you might want to carry a second set of armor and trinkets to be versatile. Then you have a host of utility options in combination with elite skills. To make matters worst no spell seems to last very long when taking into account how long it takes to kill a veteran mob. So i guess I have to carefully consider what control options I use and when in order to take less damage when attempting to solo such encounters. Unless of course solo’ing the game world was not really intended to be a viable option.
If you carry magic find gear, then that all takes up a lot of room. In addition your main set of gear and perhaps also a pvp oriented set will take up even more room. Want to help upgrade your keeps and slow down the enemy while also boosting your supply for your world in WvWvW? Well that is going to cost you a huge chunk of change, so much that it makes it frustrating trying to play the game just to grind for gold in order to have fun helping out my world as it competes against other worlds. Way too costly in my opinion. Why not just make the upgrades cost karma instead?
Dungeons are so horribly difficult to me I don’t even know what is going on. I get now that the game is based around an ARPG combat system, and yet our control and support utility don’t seem to last very long. In some cases the dodge mechanic is just annoying to bother with since I would rather be fighting then rolling all over the place, and when I do miss that one animation cause I am blinded by all the very gratuitous number of animations going off on the Boss I get one shot…oh joy!
This game needs tons of refining and lots of fixes. I really like the game world and think this game has the potential to be the absolute top MMO out there atm, but as it currently stands it really needs to refine what just seems too grindy or tedious to bother with.
Here is my experience…
1. Brisban Wildlands – Inquest Facility, north of Toxal Bog and west of Duskstruck Moors. Challenge point: Commune with Thaumacore Energy Source. The golems respawn approximately 10 – 30 seconds I take him out. Usually appears behind me when I am clearing the room of the inquest. The inquest themselves also respawn fairly fast.
2. Gendarren Fields – Hezran Outcrops, the cave where Prototype Ooze Concentrate Tincture is found. Trolls respawn rates are also almost 10 – 30 seconds as well. After I clear the entrance trolls and commence fight with the veteran troll. The entrance trolls spawn again right behind my back.
How many others were present when you did each of these things?
If they are respawning too fast its possible there is a bug or issue somewhere in the code that is causing this fast respawn issue. I have seen events recur also quite often. I take a location and achieve the objective only to see 15-20 minutes later that very same event occuring. Maybe this is intended, but if not then something is definitely off with the timers in the game.
Guardians have up to 30 weapon abilities through their sword, hammer, greatsword, mace, shield, sceptor, focus, staff, and torch options. Underwater includes another 10 to boot.
To be fully viable for most situations, or any unexpected, it is likely you are expected to carry all of these weapons for your class. As each weapon may offer utility for an encounter that could help beat it.
On top of this we have 3 healing spells, 23 utility abilities/spells, and 6 elite options.
Traits also afford us up to 7 Major Trait slots, each with 6 to 12 options for each depending on how a person fills out their traits.
Lastly there are virtues that all have their own function to help in various situations as an active or passive, of which there are 3 of these.
This doesn’t include gearing choices and upgrade options.
That is, including virtues as spells/abilities, up to 75 Guardian spells/abilities and various Major Traits to help complement your build for each situation. Now is it just me, or does this seem a very bloated and complicated mess of abilities and spells to manage?
(edited by endless.1376)
Jump puzzles are optional. I hate them too but I can choose not to do them even though when I find one I get stubborn and try anyway. Vistas, now that’s a load of bull. I hate doing vistas, I hate how much time I waste doing them and I hate that I need them for map completion. :C
Yeah Vistas at first were okay, but after awhile they became nothing more then super simple jumping puzzles; with a few harder ones added in to the mix.
I thought I must have been the only person in the game who didn’t like JP’s, guess not. Apparently there are a few just in this thread alone who share this sentiment to some degree.
See that is the thing… where in the world is the difficulty indicator? And how in the world can I know where all these jumping puzzles are even located? If I knew one had a stupid timer I wouldn’t bother with it. If I knew the snow man puzzle was going to have platforms that fall out from under me, then I also wouldn’t have bothered with that. And so it seems to be a guessing game on which one to do. I don’t even know where this gingerbread jumping puzzle is. All I know is i felt so utterly left out cause I sucked that, in combination with hunger from this diet I am on, made me upset. Even though I am usually upset and depressed, but that is besides the point!
I would at least love to see a way to know where these puzzles are, what limitations like time trials they have, and their difficulty. Does this information exist in the game somewhere?
You know what… you are right… I should be forced to like the exact same things you do.
What are we going to wear to work tomorrow?
Wear your pajamas. That is a funny word too…wear.
The reward positively sucks so you aren’t missing anything. I love jumping puzzles and this one was frustrating at first until I calmed down and realized I didn’t have to go as fast as I could. Like I said, I love them but I understand some people really hate them. I despise dungeons but it is my understanding some people enjoy them. (shudder!)
You won’t miss anything by not doing it except the achievement. If you really want the achievement, relax a little. You have more time than you think you do.
I just feel like I am missing out on awesome content in the game. I really did try to deal with these puzzles here and there and give them a chance, but man do they bug me!
It’s true that they are optional, but I hate that how in a game real life seems to seep in. I don’t want to be reminded of my failings as a human being, and how bad I suck at solving things. It just depresses me further! Even if I was good at them it would only improve my situational problem solving skills when it comes to rock climbing or some other activity in real life that this closesly resembles. Then again I probably wouldnt’ be jumping around pillars in some dark cave somewhere acting like i have unlimited lives.
These have to be the absolute worst thing I have ever seen added to a game. They are frustrating, annoying, and frankly only make me incredibly mad thinking anyone actually likes these things. I don’t get at all what is so great about them?
This seems like such a horrible version of mmo content. Why is jumping around like a rabbit so fun for people? I don’t get this. If I wanted to bother with puzzles I would play something else other than an MMORPG.
However what this really tells me is that Guild Wars 2 has absolutely no idea what it wants to be. It seems so uttely chaotic in design and all over the place rather than a cohesive experience. The funniest thing is they probably added jumping puzzles to the game because they figured you had to have a reason to jump in the game. Not really.
So this is an aspect of the game I will likely never enjoy or experience because I hate being frustrated by it. Anywho, that is my feedback. Too many traps, puzzles and werd stuff centered around something that seems so far from anything resembling real game content.
All they have to do in this game is improve the dungeons, improve the way zone events feel leveling wise as well as story telling wise, and continue to make adjustments on existing combat and classes.
If they also add guild content like raids, and perhaps guild PvP…you might see a hell of a lot more folks playing Guild Wars 2. It just needs to keep the content up, and also perhaps make adjustments on money sinks in the game. I swear WvW seems too costly to upgrade keeps, and it takes a long time to upgrade the walls and doors as well as the tier 3 features for said cost.
I like the open world far better.
Dungeons to me are very tough, and also have way too many annoying puzzles to solve. I really am not a puzzle person, nor do I like to have to form highly organized parties that must perform all actions to the letter to survive.
I’d much rather do things that are easy, or moderately difficult and fun to me. World vs. World is also quite fun as an open world type of pvp in which anyone can help their world succeed in the battles they find themselves in.
Interesting. It almost looks like what rifts does when you switch it to its customizeable mode. If this is indeed real, then customized UI’s might be coming. I say this because of the coloration on each section like its a separate box that is adjustable or relocate-able.
There is absolutely no way to avoid grinding in an RPG. You have to grind through levels, quests/events, skill points, crafting levels, personal story missions, and more…
It is inevitable.
He led of a group of people that didn’t want to work together initially into a land filled with undead. He was necessary to get them working together, and honestly I think the story was very moving.
