about Ascended weapons. Got my inquest longbow, inquest sword, inquest dagger, inquest harpoon, and inquest spear gun. Put superior sigil of fire, and energy runes on them. See it this way. Others worked hard to lose their top gear position every time an expansion or new better gear came out. There’s nothing to do about it. If they buffed up the old gear no one would need to get new.

The point is to give you an illusion of ‘progression’ through the periodic increase in the games power level. Of course, other players will also acquire the new power level so there won’t be any relative difference in power between you and other players, i.e., no actual progress. No one, if fact, will have gone anywhere. That’s why they call it a treadmill—you get on and off at the same place.

The numbers will, however, be higher perhaps giving you an illusion of progression. But, you seem like one who already knows that the emperor of treadmills is wearing no clothes.

There aren’t any ascended weapons. Just rings and backpieces. It took me less than three weeks of working on fractals to get two upgraded rings and an upgraded backpiece. It’s not like a lot of work is involved…

More gear will come, of course, but I would expect ascended weapons to be the LAST things in the list to get ascended attention.

Even Fractal weapons are still exotic….

Actually, I bought this game because I did not want to gear grind another time after hitting the ceiling with exotics. Just like in GW1 once i got level 20 gear you were all good. Progression came from cosmetics.

I know it is to satisfy new players from other more traditional MMOs but they sure pisses me off as an original GW1 player.

Actually if you read this:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

it says there will be ascended weapons, eventually.

“You’ll also see more Legendary items in the future and an update to our existing Legendary weapons. Legendary items were always intended to be on par with other “best-in-slot” items. So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. Thus Legendaries will remain “best-in-slot” items. All Legendary items going forward will be of Ascended power. We also have plans to add more fun ways to acquire Legendary precursor items with a more “scavenger hunt” feel than they are acquired currently. "

I think you are confusing work and play. We don’t play games because we want to work. Game design theorists have given this area a lot thought. Basically we play because it’s fun. Reasons it might be fun might include fantasy, i.e., we really want to be the hero who saves the day and we can feel like a powerful hero there. Or, it might simply be abnegation, i.e., I’m feeling burned out by work and I want to mindlessly smash some zombies. These are examples of basic motivations for playing a game and the reason why we play.

For many a gear grind is the opposite of fun. They realize that when all players hop off the gear treadmill they are at the same relative power to each other as they were when they hopped on. Meanwhile the environment has attained the new power level as well so they are at the same power relative to the environment as they were before the new tier of gear. Nothing has changed. No one has gone anywhere. They have just expended in-game time and effort to keep up with the stat progression. This is an example of a forced grind. A forced grind is one you must do to continue playing the game. Examples are pretty much all other MMO’s that have vertical progression.

But, many realize there is no inherent point to it. Since you are not going anywhere on a treadmill, why seek one out. I want more from a game than the simple solution of stat inflation. I believe it’s possible and I believe Anet was on the right track before the 11/15 patch. As gamers become more sophisticated in there appetites I hope that we are able to see a game developer succeed without the forced grind of gear treadmills.

They may be demanding proof because there’s this great game out there that stands as a complete testament against everything you just said.

In this game, new weapons were added all the time, but they acted as skins. The power levels of the top weapons never advanced despite multiple patches and expansions. And it turns out that people were happy to grind for countless hours to acquire these new skins, even knowing that they didn’t grant the player any noticeable advantage in combat at all. People just loved the new art and looking cool. Turns out this was a rather popular move by a rather popular game.

In fact, you may have heard of this game. It was called Guild Wars 1.

So yes, I’m going to join the chorus against you and ask for your proof that players need a vertical progression system to feel rewarded.

This is only the issue and loathsome practice that many believe when it’s abused by the games developers. The opposite of a treadmill effect would be a stagnant one. What is the point in this game being a persistent MMO world if your character reaches the pinnacle of itemization and it’s OVER? heck I’m sure there’s more than enough single player games that can offer up that sort of “fun” and cost less than this game shipped at.

As for “abuse” once you see the “buy this from the CS to offset this ingame mechanic” then you know it’s being abused, as you’re then being CHARGED CASH for your treadmill experience. As many have pointed out you’re NOT being charged for the treadmill, but many are PAYING to alleviate the issues with the aesthetic progression in terms of legendary weapons and their pointless grind tell me if you would, what exactly out of the following is worse sounding:

1: A gear treadmill and “sense of progression” in the game with a mild curve in terms of stat increases with no outstanding leaps in effectiveness of gear “a la” cataclysm greens to WOTLK epics.

2: One of the last significant aesthetic progressive items being so reliant on RNG, players are actually paying real cash to buy gold so they can avoid it?

If they keep adding in gear, then at least it’s something to strive for and a reason to actually do anything ingame, the whole standing around talking crap or repeating the same content with no goals doesn’t exactly seem like fun, considering this game has a LOT of issues with it’s core design aspects inherently. And as much as players like to claim “self entitled” etc about players with aspects, a goal is usually a reward in the sense of an item, as it’s the basis of many an RPG genre game.

They may be demanding proof because there’s this great game out there that stands as a complete testament against everything you just said.

In this game, new weapons were added all the time, but they acted as skins. The power levels of the top weapons never advanced despite multiple patches and expansions. Also this is a good post, as it hints to the core issue, there’s a lack of skins… plain and simple…

If the whole point is to aesthetically progress or have choices by earning them then that’s fine, GW2 is hugely lacking in this department though and thus it brings the whole thing into question. I’d be JUST as happy earning skins ingame as long as the grind wasn’t so ridiculously reliant on RNG that my end goal seemed to never get closer to me no matter what I do, until one day I stumble over it at a random date… it’s just lazy design.

Irony…. xD

Honestly why not have gear progression. Once you max out gears and have done the content to death to get it what are people seriously just gonna pvp 24/7? no they will quit. with more gear and more content that needs that gear you get to play the game more. Now i know new content isn’t necessary for that but really, how many times are you willing to play the same game over and over? i’ll give most games 2 maybe 3 playthroughs (if it’s an rpg) but honestly once you beat it, how many times do you play it again till an expansion or dlc comes out? same concept imo

Honestly why not have gear progression. Once you max out gears and have done the content to death to get it what are people seriously just gonna pvp 24/7? no they will quit.

Again, not to sound like a broken record, but seriously people….Guild Wars 1 is proof that you are completely and totally wrong.

The game was built around all Lvl 20 items, weapons and armors alike, being “Best in Slot” with a focus on extremely rare skins and vanity items. It was a game that focused on diversity in terms of appearance, and had a number of great PvP modes in the game to suit a variety of tastes.

Not only did it “survive” on this model for nearly 8 years, it made so much money that it got two full campaigns and one expansion added. Oh yeah, and it helped to fund this game.

So it’s preposterous for people to be claiming that a game can’t survive without vertical progression. It’s already been done before and it’s been proven that it works. The devs are not battling some sort of impossible-to-avoid foe, here, they built a game that defeated it once before. They should know how to avoid vertical progression better than anyone on the market. So the fact that vertical progression does exist in this game is honestly quite baffling, and it’s made worse by the fact that people defend it as something that can’t be avoided when that’s simply not true.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?

you are absolutely right critickitten, the problem is however that there are still a lot of people here who want vertical progression. A lot of players didn’t come from GW1, they came from other hit ‘n’ run MMO’s, expecting a similar model. And while GW2 is both flawed on some aspects and new (Not infinite content) there will be these kind of responses. But I think it will pass when people adapt/leave.

That doesn’t make the upcoming addition of them irrelevant, pres tel.. how does me merely pointing out that you’re omitting the possibility of the thread being about a future addition thus being relevant. akin to me being “ignorant” if anything that’s really a “pot calling the kettle black” argument :/

You pretty much claimed this thread had no relevance merely based on the fact they’re not in the game RIGHT NOW, despite having been said that they will be in future. Or should we not look ahead to potential issues now and instead focus on the other issues we currently have? cos I’m all for that if that’s what you mean ;P

Still, you could have worded your response a lot better

(not claiming I’m any better just informing ya)

Oh and FYI

"

All of the new weapon skins are Account Bound. So you can choose which character to send them to.

There is also a change going into the current chest given exotic armors and weapons that will make them Account Bound and Soulbind on Use. So you can send those extra armors and things you get to your bank for your other characters."

In nowhere does this state they will not have higher stats, he just merely references the weapons as skins. If it’s been said in another medium then by all means feel free to post your source, but last I heard they will be higher stat values. If that’s changed then your post makes more sense, however I’m not going to run around the internet chasing down any kitten bit of information A-Net decides to post on their twitter or facebook account as opposed to their official forums.

I don’t feel its fair though that by the time I finally got almost 2/3 of my exotic weapons and armors upgraded and transmuted with the skins I wanted, They announced Ascended gears. Shows that I am either gonna have to shell out some more cash for fine transmutation stones everytime they raise the powerlevel, or I just wont be able to take pride in my character.

I would like more skins, but there are actually a lot of “rare” looks you can achieve via mix/matching and the use of transmutation stones. Compared to games like Warhammer Online, SWTOR, TERA and Rift, the variety of looks I see while standing around in Lion’s Arch are refreshing.

Now, if I enter the realm of my own subjective opinion, I’m a lot more disappointed with the lack of desirable/cool/quality among the variety the game offers than the amount of variety. Of course, almost daily I see people wearing a combination of armors I considered poor that actually look pretty together, so sometimes the individual pieces fare better off set. (I bought some leg armor two days ago for the stats, expecting to use a transmutation stone to transfer my then current look, but I actually liked the effect the new armor had on the overall outfit and kept it as is).

The previews don’t always do the armor justice, but I really wish they would add previews to the Trading Post. I think being able to easily try out different combos would lead to a lot more mix/matching among the population and add a lot more diversity.

Ok, let’s assume he wasn’t talking about the exotic skins.
- It was announced already in november that there would be more ascended stuff in the future.
- It has now been 2 months, still no additions
- January update contains no new content
- February is focused on PvP if you are to believe mod posts.
- March sounds is the first plausible time where something like ascended weapons could be added.

So maybe he “wasted” his time having a nice weapon for the next months. I don’t see the problem.

— Also ill take ignorant back, sorry.

about Ascended weapons. Got my inquest longbow, inquest sword, inquest dagger, inquest harpoon, and inquest spear gun. Put superior sigil of fire, and energy runes on them. Now Ascended weapons have come to my attention, and that I will soon no longer have max damage weapons. What was the point of me working so hard getting all this gear?

Great video explaining what can happen if Anet are not careful, but so far I have no problem with the way things are. Watch the video very enlightening.
