Oh, kitten . Now I see. Well, there goes my excuse to my gf on why I have to spend all my available time playing GW2!

I actually like the idea of having to do fun stuff to unlock individual traits. I’m sure someone will put together a list of what you need to do for each trait so those with existing characters can still go out and do the activities even though they’re already unlocked.

Sorry for the brief derailment, back to the topic!

I’m sure there are plenty of exceptions, like if someone creates a hybrid PU/Shatter build, but generally, hybrid refers to a mix of power and condition damage.

I run hybrid.

What does “hybrid” mean anyway? I keep seeing that, without any elaboration on what it’s a hybrid between. I assume it means a mix of two or more of the following:
Shatter
Phantasm
Power
Lockdown
Support
Mantra

Can someone explain what hybrid means, and how others can understand w/o needing to know more other than “hybrid”?

I’m interested! I don’t play every day, and sometimes I can only play for snippets at a time (full time job, full time girlfriend), but I’d love to try it out. And by “it”, I mean the guild. I didn’t realize OMFG was an actual guild. I’m actually in a guild, but only b/c i was randomly invited and I haven’t done anything with them. I don’t actually know what being in a guild is like. With the word GUILD right in the name of the game, I feel like I’m missing out. I usually do map exploration solo or with my girlfriend and LFG dungeons.

Which I guess brings me to a bigger question: is there a guild you guys can recommend that is fun, not too serious, and welcoming to those with questions and needing advice? This isn’t my first MMO, and my mesmer isn’t my first character, but I’ve only done 3 of the dungeons and haven’t done any WvW or PvP yet, so I still have a LOT to learn.

EDIT: When I ask about guild suggestions, I only do so because it seems like OMFG is an “auxiliary” guild as skcamow said, so I’m looking for advice for a “main” guild (you can be in more than one at a time, right?).

once you hit the appropriate level.

That’s my point. Right now A, M and GM traits are unlocked at 11, 40 and 60. After the patch, it will be 30, 60 and 80. My understanding is, if you’ve unlocked a tier before the patch, it will still be unlocked after the patch, even if you don’t meet the NEW level reqs.

So, if you get to 60 before the patch, you will still have GM unlocked after the patch. If you only get to 59 before the patch, then after the patch you will have to get to 80 to unlock GM.

Isn’t this correct?

Wow, that really sucks. I assume Anet has made no announcement or in no way hinted that they’re going to somehow fix this problem… is that correct? At least they’re making re-traiting easier with the patch, so I guess I’ll just play condi when I’m playing open world by myself or casually in dungeons, and do power/shatter for more competitive/serious play. I assume power/shatter is what you “should” be running for serious PvE? I’m not really much for WvW or PvP (not yet anyway). I know there are a million builds out there, and many treads devoted to them. I’ve read so many that I sort of forget what’s what at this point. Can some of you suggest some builds for:

PvE serious dungeons
PvP
WvW zerg (that’s just running around with a random group right?)
WvW solo

Or maybe there’s a build that’s just good at all of these?

Cool, thanks for all the advice!

For the stacks, doesn’t it kinda wash out, since you’ll also be re-applying your own stacks? So their lesser ones will get overwritten by yours and vice versa? I know that’s way less optimal, but i don’t see why it makes condi un-viable for serious PvE. And if you’re doing serious PvE, wouldn’t it imply that your party-mates are knowledgeable and you could work out who’s doing what, and/or their stacks will also be strong, like yours?

I usually start a LFG and put right in the desc “beginner, all welcome”. That way, no one can be upset if I’m not min/maxed. I also put “first time” or “first run” if I plan on watching the cutscenes, so people know that might happen. That’s all good right? I want to play and have fun, but I also want to respect the fact that some people want to min/max or speed run. I figure if I’m upfront with what to expect, no one should get upset.

So, if I unlock the GM traits by getting to level 60 before April 15, I will still have them unlocked once the pack is applied.

@Maniac Magee – Your last post was very well stated, and I applaud your attitude as well as others in this thread. I’m level 49 (trying to get to 60 before April 15 so I can have GM traits before 80), and I can’t wait to get to 80 to try your build. It’s what I’m going for. I love the idea of a chaos mesmer keeping illusions up so there are orbs bouncing all over the place doing all kinds of random things. Is it optimal? No. Does it sound like a ton of fun? Hell yes. And with the “fix” to Illusionary Elasticity coming, it’s going to get even nuttier.

If I trait/gear this way and some group doesn’t want me b/c I’m not optimal, that’s their prerogative and I 100% support their right to have it. I’ll just find another group less min/max focused to play with, and have a lot of fun.

Also, what is the quickest way to get from 48-80? I play with my gf so sometimes I’m just exploring and doing rando events, but if I wanted to grind it, what’s the most efficient way (with respect to time)? Dungeons? Any one in particular? Or these champion trains I keep hearing about?

@Advent: Okay, so if I get 10 stacks of bleed on an enemy, and there is a warrior who is in my party (ally), and he hits the same enemy with a skill that applies 1 stack of bleed, then his bleed stack will overwrite mine? So the enemy will then have only 1 stack of whatever his bleed is? So if you have 2 or more allies who apply the same condition, they do NOT stack together? That’s in direct conflict with what’s said here (I think).

@all: I still don’t understand exactly how group stacking of boons/conditions works, and what this “huge flaw” is. If any of you can clearly explain it, could you hop over to my other thread and explain in detail? Pretty please?

@Natsu Dragneel: So I would buy the cheap rare set on the trade post, and then grind whatever dungeon gives the tokens to buy whatever set I want? Since I want to try and make a condi/chaos mesmer, I’ve been reading that rabid is the way to go. Guess I’ll be grinding Twilight Arbor. I haven’t done a dungeon in explore mode yet. For my very first dungeon experience, I did AC explore by accident and couldn’t get past the traps in the beginning.

Can you please expand on your quote above? I started an entire thread asking about this, and even though over 150 people have viewed, no one has commented.

@everyone: I keep reading everywhere how necro is bad, no one wants a necro in their group, etc etc.. it is really all that bad? In many threads I have seen how people want warriors and guardians most, and then mesmers eles and thieves, and then no one wants hunter, engi or necro. I’ve literally seen so many times how people think necro is just so bad. I really only have time for one profession, and i don’t want to spend all my time on one that will turn out to be useless to others (it is a group game after all). I know any prof can be awesome in the right hands, but I’m never going to be a top-tier player.

@shady: Yeah when I started my mesmer I almost did necro instead, but the way mesmer worked just seemed so cool. I have limited time for GW (girlfriend and work), so can’t start over. Plus, with illusions I feel like mesmer can do this play style. I appreciate the comments!

@advent: cool! I’ll try it out when I get there. I expect it’s going to be a long time b/c i have to get to 80 and THEN get level 80 gear/runs/sigils/accessories etc. I assume getting that stuff is a trophy/gold grind to buy or make? Right now I’m desperately trying to get to 60 before the patch so i have access to grandmaster at 60 instead of 80.

Are you excited about the “fix” to Illusionary Elasticity? I know I am. Think it’ll make condi more viable in PvE?

Okay, before you troll/flame me, just hear me out.

I used to play WoW a long time ago. I had a TON of fun with the warlock. This class basically plays by using CC abilities (like fear and lockdown spells) to keep enemies off you while you load up DoTs. Another major mechanic was that some of the DoTs and direct damage would give you life, which you could use as an extra mana source.

Now, the main thing I miss about the warlock that I’m looking for was being able to roll up into a crowd of 4 enemies (PvE open-world mobs) around your level and be able to kite/cc them while loading up DoTs. It was a fun dance and very challenging, and it’s even better in GW because the combat is so much more active (evade).

I know there is no class like the warlock in GW2. I know GW2 professions are different, no holy trilogy, and all classes and do pretty much anything if specced right. That’s why I’m here. For those of you who know the mesmer well, and know a bit about the WoW warlock, is there a mesmer build that functions like this? I hadn’t even really thought of this until I was playing last night and I was fighting 4 mobs and was evading all over the place, throwing up illusions and stealthing to avoid and it was just so much fun. It reminded me of the warlock.

My best guess so far is a build like Maniac Magician. One that focuses on conditions (dot) and stealth/evasion to give your DoTs enough time to work while keeping you alive.

What do you guys think? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Am I in the wrong profession? Is my build guess correct? Educate me!

PS – I’m level 48 mesmer, playing PvE open world and dungeon. I play casually, so the best build and/or max DPS build is not so important to me. I’m more interested in the playstyle. For instance, I’ve already read many times that “condi is terrible for PvE”. That’s okay with me, as long as the playstyle is what I’m looking for. It’s all about fun and that differs from person to person!

Thanks for reading, you guys are great.

I’ve seen it mentioned several times how some stats will be more/less important after the patch. I’ve read forum posts and the official release notes, but it all seems to focus on traits (new GMs, re-traiting for free, higher lvls req for unlocking trait trees etc). I’m afraid I’m missing some of the finer points that might affect the mesmer. For instance, I read about how they’re introducing “ferocity”. I’ve also read in the mesmer forums about how precision will matter less going forward. How is that? Is it because precision will dictate the %chance of crit, and ferocity will do +critDamage? Wasn’t the +critDamage modifier already doing that? I don’t see how this makes precision “less valuable” now. So I guess what I’m asking, in a larger sense, is: what should we know about the patch that will affect the mesmer?

Group Stacking of Boons/Conditions

sirrealist.1360

From the staff/maniac magician thread, DuckDuckBoom posted this:
“Having the staff clones give 5 seconds of might can actually be a detriment to other peoples builds as it starts getting rid of the more long lasting might. "

I am still relatively new to the game. I have been reading a lot on forums, and every now and then I read about how sometimes stacking boons/conditions can be bad. Can someone explain the situations where you can be doing a bad thing by helping to stack boons/conditions? As far as I understand, group boons/conditions that can stack do stack from multiple people, so I don’t quite follow how it can be bad. Like, if there are already 25 stacks and someone else is putting on more powerful ones and you put on new weaker ones, you can cause the better ones to drop? What is the stacking order, FILO or FIFO?

I want to understand the finer points of boon/condition stacking, but I haven’t found a place where it is discussed in detail (only snippets here and there). I am really interested in creating a chaotic/random condition mesmer (i know it may not be optimal, but it’s partly for RP and mostly for fun/challenge), but I want to at least understand the nuances of how conditions work. The more you know, and all that…

Thanks!!!!

What build to trait into while leveling?

in Elementalist

sirrealist.1360

Aloha!

I’ve got some questions regarding leveling an ele, which I’ve outlined (and gave prelim info for) below:

1) I have a lvl 14 ele that I’m working on. I have a level 67 warrior, and played a WoW Warlock to 65. I’m pretty good at evading, getting the combat mechanics and gaming in general (I’m reading forums, studying strategies) but I’m no expert GW2’er.
2) I’ll be soloing, and sometimes running with a small group of friends (none of them very experienced with MMOs). If they join, it’ll be my gf’s lvl 67 ranger, and/or several friends who have level 14 ranger, ranger and warrior
3) I know that for leveling I need to try it all. I will. I know I need to be swapping attunements and not sitting in one. I’m still unlocking weapon skills, so I’m trying out everything. I was using S/D for a bit, now I’m staff.
4) What I need to know is, what should I be traiting towards while leveling, and why. I’ve read the 2 pinned guides plus Neko’s, and he sent me an adjusted Auromancer build that he thinks is good for leveling and learning ele. This is his suggested build He suggested while leveling to trait 20 points in Arcana for Renewing Stamina and Elemental Attunement, the next 15 for Water so you can get heal-on-attune-to-Water. After that, no suggestions.
5) If people think that Neko’s “modified Auramancer” is a good way to go, I have more questions, but I’ll wait to see what people say so I don’t derail the conversation.

So, what do you all think? Go with the Auramancer? Some other build? Why does Auramancer or another build work? I see some synergies, but others are eluding me.

Thanks all!

Leveling: Staff Regen Build?

in Elementalist

Posted by: sirrealist.1360

sirrealist.1360

Aloha from Hawaii!

So, I’ve got a level 14 ele that I’m working on, and I got to thinking about a build based on the water #1 staff skill: an ele that does a LOT of regen/healing. You’d start putting points into Water up to idk, 20, then 30 into Arcane, 10 into Air, and then last 10 to finish up Water.

I got this idea from a Warrior build called Save Adrenaline, where you use Healing Signet and Adrenal Health to keep a constant health regen going.

So, I’ve been playing mostly with myself (ha ha), and sometimes with my gf or a small group. No one is very good, and we’re just doing map exploration and world/local events. I really like to get into the fray, and I was thinking if there way a way to play an ele that sorta stays up close to the action and has a lot of active health regen. I especially find myself needing a lot of healing when I’m alone. I’m not very good at kiting or doing AoE attacks on moving targets wile staying far away from them. I AM pretty good at evading attacks in a small area by dodging. So anyway, I put this build together with the idea that the “primary” attunement would be Water, while using others of course for combos and other abilities.

The prime idea of the build is for it to be self sufficient, by way of constantly healing itself… through skills, abilities, and traits. I am obviously still very new to ele, so I really don’t know if this build is viable at all (aside from the “PvE is stupid easy so anything is viable” argument).

I had a hard time with the Water traits to choose. I started with picking utility skills, ones that would let you avoid damage and/or heal. I found cantrips to be the way to go, and by chance picked 3. Clearly, the water tree has a lot of good traits for what I’m trying to do, so I went with Cantrip Mastery and Soothing Disruption. However, Piercing Shards and Soothing Wave also look very tasty. In Arcane adept I chose blasting staff since we’re using a staff, but Renewing Stamina looks great. Unfortunately, while you’re leveling, if you don’t have a lot of precision yet, you won’t crit much, so that seems like a skill only to take later on when you’ve got full zerker gear. As for the last 10pts, I put it into air to get more precision and to get a skill that would help when you’re in any attenuation.

Also, please take a look at the runes/sigils/whatnot I chose for gear. IDK much about that stuff yet, but I chose what I thought made sense.

I’ve read a lot about builds and can’t seem to decide on one. I read some guides, and Neko pointed me to his, but made adjustments due to balancing patches and ended up suggesting this build, saying the first 20 into Arcane, then 15 into water, and then wherever i want from there.

So, what do you guys think? What won’t work about this? Is the trait point assignment order I mentioned (20Water -> 30Arcane -> 10Air -> 10Water) a good way to go? Will this work for leveling, mostly just PvE map explore solo or in a small inexperienced group? What about Neko’s suggested build?

Thanks for looking/posting!!!!

I must be missing something, because Neko’s Auramancer build only has 1 aura in it. Some things that don’t make sense to me:
1) Why called Auramancer? It only one aura. The name implies you’d be using auras a lot
2) Keeping in mind #1, why Zephyr’s Boon? D/F only has one Aura. It seems like Bolt to the Heart would be a better choice.
3) Powerful auras? Keeping in mind #1, wouldn’t cleansing wave or water be better?
4) Blasting staff? The build focuses on D/F, not staves. wouldn’t arcane mastery, renewing stamina or final shielding be better?

Thank you all!

To clarify my situation, my main is a lvl67 Warrior that I play with my gf (lvl67 ranger). I now have 1-3 other friends who want to play with us, all of them new to MMOs. I’ve played WoW a bit, and my gf is new as well.

So, the idea is that I’m starting an ele that I’ll be leveling from scratch with 2-4 others, in order of how often i’ll be playing with them:
Gf Necro
friend 1 ranger
friend 2 warrior
friend 3 ranger

It’s a group that could die a lot, esp since I’m the most experienced. So, I’ve been doing a lot of reading on the ele, looking at builds, looking at strategy, and just trying to educate myself on the prof. I’ve read Zelyhn’s and Neco’s guides, and I’ll read Dkey’s next. We’ll be doing PvE almost exclusively, with dungeons as appropriate. I’m trying to learn what I should be doing as far as leveling, as well as being able to help my group as best I can. Right now, that means (1) staying alive and (2) killing mobs quickly. But, I’m learning about combo fields and might stacking, so I’ll try to do more of that.

I find I have trouble memorizing all the skills, which makes it hard to know what to do on the fly. This is made especially difficult by F1-4 being hard to reach with my left hand, so I end up sitting in an attunement. I’m only lvl 5 and still unlocking weapon skills, so this isn’t a big problem yet.

With my warrior, I JUST switched to a new keybind, from default to having 6=Sh+E, 7=Sh+A, 8=Sh+S, 9=Sh+D, and 0=Sh+W, where Sh=shift. That way, I don’t even have to take my fingers off WASD to do them. I hold RClick to control camera so direction, and WASD for forward, lStrafe, reverse and rStrafe respectively. I haven’t figured out where to bind F1-F4 yet.

So, what do you guys think on what I should be doing for leveling with such a group, with respect to:
build
weapons
gear/bonuses (power and precision vs vit and toughness)
sigils/runes
key binding
anything else I should be aware of.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

@VT… I guess. I really didn’t want to play another melee class. I’m sure there are differences between how guardian and warrior play, but I can’t help feeling like I should try something completely different, as they say. I don’t have time to play every class, I might only have my warrior main and one alt that i really get anywhere, so I wanted to play something, idk, NOT “like a warrior, but more defensive/support”, you know?

you’re right VT, i just am not in the habit of always keeping it in the center. Sometime sill let go of rclick for various reasons and will just rclick again to regain control of the camera. RedStar, do you use rclick to control camera? if so, do you left go, then move your pointer to where you need it and then activate skill?

I have the default setup. I guess I just never have my mouse where it needs to be to be on a target. Like, I just hold down RClick and move the mouse around to rotate camera. When I want to use an AoE skill, I have to let go of rClick (no longer controlling camera), find where the mouse/AoE is (this takes just a sec, but it could be anywhere), hit the key for the skill (I don’t ever click my skills), move it to where I need it (anticipating enemy movement of course), and then click. I guess my biggest problem is I never know where the pointer is going to be when I let go of RClick and hit the key for the AoE skill, so I waste time moving it where I need it… does that make sense?

I’ve been playing a warrior, and considering trying other professions. I know ele has a lot of AoE skills, and I’m a little nervous about it. I have a hard time with AoE skills (like the warrior burst skill for warhammer, or LB skills), because when I want to do that skill, I have to move my mouse around to the target, and that slows me down. I even have trouble with the Whirlwind Attack sometimes, with the direction of the attack pointing in the wrong direction. I watched a WvW video where someone was playing warrior with LB and he would have the green AoE circle show up on the screen for like a milisecond before confirming the location. It was like his mouse was already in the right place, so he just had to hit the key for the skill then LClick to confirm. How do you do it so fast? Maybe it’s because I use mouse RClick held down for camera control? When I want to use AoE skill and the green circle shows up, I have to find it first (b/c with mouse RCLick camera control, it’s hidden when held down), then move it to the place I want, all while trying to move at the same time. Is it just that I need more practice? Maybe the RClick camera control is bad? Maybe there’s a trick I’m missing?

Thanks!

Ele or Mes to Help My Little Group

Aloha from Hawaii!

First off, I hope this is in the right thread. I didn’t want to double post this into mes and ele forums, but if that’s what I should do (or put this anywhere else), please let me know.

So, I have a lvl 66 warrior and I play that with my gf, who runs a ranger. We convinced a couple friends to get the game and play with us, so her and I are going to roll new toons. Let’s assume that only one person will be joining her and I, and here’s what they’ll be playing:
Friend: Ranger
GF: Necro
Me: Mesmer or Ele

I’ve played an ele by myself up to 30, and got a litle frustrated b/c i died a lot. I’m sure this is part to me not playing well/smart (it was my first toon), and also playing solo. Now I have 2 others who will be playing with me, so I could always go back to ele. But, I’ve also been curious about the mesmer, just because it seems so different. It seems to me that Guardian would be the best class for me to play, to be a support/tank for my friend and gf, but I already have a warrior and wanted something pretty different. My question is, assuming I don’t suck terribly, which class should I play?

Now, I know the #1 answer will be “try them both and play the one you like”. And, I get that. I’ll do that, sort of. But, I want to get some expert opinion if one or the other would be a better compliment to what my friend/gf are playing. Seems to me like neither ele nor mes are really a compliment (ranged w/ pet + ranged), which is why it seems like Guardian is the best compliment. I just don’t know enough about ele or mesmer to say if one is better over the other as a compliment.

We’ll mostly be playing PvE, events and dungeons (eventually). Maybe WvW and/or PvP later on, but for now, i just want to help my GF and friend be awesome, while still having a fun/“diff from warrior” class to play.

I’m more than happy to provide more info if needed. Also, I totally understand if the #1 reaction is “dude, they can all do everything, PvE is facepalm easy, just play the one you like”. I get that. I’m just looking for opinions. My gf is okay, but not an optimal player (she’s not good at evade, but getting better), and my friend is 100% new to MMORPG. I’m not elite myself (I played a warlock solo to 60 in WoW a long time ago), but I’m a long time PC gamer and can def learn the ropes of anything to the degree that I’m fairly good.

Thoughts? And thanks for looking!

Anyone else want to chime in? Thoughts on AoO for my build, based on what I said?

I’ve actually been using GS and then swapping around what my 2nd weapon is, based on the most interesting weapon I have on hand at the time. Right now I have a rare rifle and LB, so I’m playing around with those.

Thanks for the link! I saw this, but didn’t read it carefully because it seemed geared towards lv80 dungeon runs, but you’re right, I’ll read through it. Lot’s of good info here.

I guess I didn’t think AoO would be useful for me since neither my weapons nor skills cause bleed, and the trait that does (Precise Strikes) only does so 33% of the time that you crit (which I do about 40% of the time). Seemed like a waste to spend points to get 10% dam increase on only ~13% of enemies… or am I calculating that wrong (33% of 40%)? However, something I just realized is that my GF’s build does a LOT of bleeding, so I guess I’ll still get a lot of use from it. It doesn’t matter who causes the bleeding, so long as it’s there, right?

Thanks Brigg! I’ll checkout LB. I’ll have to feel it out, considering my GF uses long and shortbows exclusively. I’m currently using GS and Hammer, but only because I found a rare hammer that is very very strong.

This might be an even better build, considering I want my adrenaline full at all times (for Beserker’s Power and Adrenal Health). From what I understand, the greatsword burst skill is total crap, but the axe burst skill is great.

Thoughts?
